3Synchrotron micro-scale measurement of metal distributions in Phragmites australis and Typha latifolia root tissue from an urban brownfield site显示文摘Liberty State Park in New Jersey,USA,is a 'brownfield' site containing various levels of contaminants.To investigate metal uptake and distributions in plants on the brownfield site,Phragmites australis and Typha latifolia were collected in Liberty State Park during the growing season(May–September)in 2011 at two sites with the high and low metal loads,respectively.The objective of this study was to understand the metal(Fe,Mn,Cu,Pb and Zn)concentration and spatial distributions in P.australis and T.latifolia root systems with micro-meter scale resolution using synchrotron X-ray microfluorescence(μXRF)and synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography(μCMT)techniques.The root structure measurement by synchrotron μCMT showed that high X-ray attenuation substance appeared in the epidermis.Synchrotron μXRF measurement showed that metal concentrations and distributions in the root cross-section between epidermis and vascular tissue were statistically different.Significant correlations were found between metals(Cu,Mn,Pb and Zn)and Fe in the epidermis,implying that metals were scavenged by Fe oxides.The results from this study suggest that the expression of metal transport and accumulation within the root systems may be element specific.The information derived from this study can improve our current knowledge of the wetland plant ecological function in brownfield remediation.Huan Feng Yu Qian Frank J.Gallagher Weiguo Zhang Lizhong Yu Changjun Liu Keith W.Jones Ryan Tappero 2016Journal of Environmental Sciences2016,28,3:3
4Autonomic responses to blast overpressure can be elicited by exclusively exposing the ear in rats显示文摘Blast overpressure has become an increasing cause of brain injuries in both military and civilian populations. Though blast's direct effects on the cochlea and vestibular organs are active areas of study, little attention has been given to the ear's contribution to the overall spectrum of blast injury. Acute autonomic responses to blast exposure, including bradycardia and hypotension, can cause hypoxia and contribute to blast-induced neurotrauma. Existing literature suggests that these autonomic responses are elicited through blast impacting the thorax and lungs. We hypothesize that the unprotected ear also provides a vulnerable locus for blast to cause autonomic responses. We designed a blast generator that delivers controlled overpressure waves into the ear canal without impacting surrounding tissues in order to study the ear's specific contribution to blast injury. Anesthetized adult rats' left ears were exposed to a single blast wave ranging from 0 to 110 PSI(0-758 kPa). Blast exposed rats exhibited decreased heart rates and blood pressures with increased blast intensity, similar to results gathered using shock tubes and whole-body exposure in the literature. While rats exposed to blasts below 50 PSI(345 kPa) exhibited increased respiratory rate with increased blast intensity, some rats exposed to blasts higher than 50 PSI(345 kPa) stopped breathing immediately and ultimately died. These autonomic responses were significantly reduced in vagally denervated rats, again similar to whole-body exposure literature. 13A Multi-Flow Information Flow Tracking Approach for Proving Quantitative Hardware Security Properties显示文摘Information Flow Tracking(IFT)is an established formal method for proving security properties related to confidentiality,integrity,and isolation.It has seen promise in identifying security vulnerabilities resulting from design flaws,timing channels,and hardware Trojans for secure hardware design.However,existing IFT methods tend to take a qualitative approach and only enforce binary security properties,requiring strict non-interference for the properties to hold while real systems usually allow a small amount of information flows to enable desirable interactions.Consequently,existing methods are inadequate for reasoning about quantitative security properties or measuring the security of a design in order to assess the severity of a security vulnerability.In this work,we propose two multi-flow solutions—multiple verifications for replicating existing IFT model and multi-flow IFT method.The proposed multi-flow IFT method provides more insight into simultaneous information flow behaviors and allows for proof of quantitative information flow security properties,such as diffusion,randomization,and boundaries on the amount of simultaneous information flows.Experimental results show that our method can be used to prove a new type of information flow security property with verification performance benefits.Yu Tai Wei Hu Lu Zhang Dejun Mu Ryan Kastner 2021Tsinghua Science and Technology2021,26,1:1

19Maintenance of species boundaries in three sympatric Ligularia(Senecioneae,Asteraceae)species显示文摘The key process in speciation concerns the formation and maintenance of reproductive isolating barriers between diverging lineages.Although species boundaries are frequently investigated between two species across many taxa,reproductive isolating barriers among multiple species(>2)that would represent the most common phenomenon in nature,remain to be clarified.Here,we use double digest restriction-site associated DNA(ddRAD)sequencing to examine patterns of hybridization at a sympatric site where three Ligularia species grow together and verify whether those patterns contribute to the maintenance of boundaries among species.The results based on the RAD SNP datasets indicated hybridization Ligularia cyathiceps?L.duciformis and L.duciformis?L.yunnanensis were both restricted to F1s plus a few first-generation backcrosses and no gene introgression were identified,giving rise to strong reproductive isolation among hybridizing species.Moreover,hybrid swarm simulation,using HYBRIDLAB,indicated the RAD SNP datasets had sufficient discriminatory power for accurate hybrid detection.We conclude that parental species show strong reproductive isolation and they still maintain species boundaries,which may be the key mechanism to maintain species diversity of Ligualria in the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas.Moreover,this study highlights the effectiveness of RAD sequencing in hybridization studies.Ningning Zhang Yongpeng Ma Ryan A.Folk Jiaojun Yu Yuezhi Pan Xun Gong 2018Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2018,60,10:1
