1Effect of Alstonia scholaris bark extract on testicular function of Wistar rats显示文摘Aim:To evaluate the antifertility effect of Alstonia scholaris bark extract in male rats. Methods:In male Wistar rats Alstonia scholaris bark extract was given by oral route at a dose of 200mg/day for60days,The fertility and testicular function were assessed by mating tests, sperm motility, sperm concentration, biochemical indices and testicular cell population dynamics. Results:Oral feeding with the extract at a dose of 200mg/day for the period of 60days did not cause body weight loss, while the weights of testes, epididymides, seminal vesicle and ventral prostate were significantly reduced. The production of step-19 spermatids was reduced by 79.6%in treated rats. The popu-lation of preleptotene and pachytene spermatocytes were decrased by61.9%and60.1%,respectively.Spematogo-nia and Sertoli cell population were also affected. The seminiferous tubule and Leydig cell nuclear area were reduced significantly(P<0.01)when compared to the controls..Reduced sperm count and motility yesulted in a total supprs-sion of fertility.A significant fall in the protein and sialic acid content of the testes, epididymides, seminal vesicle and ventral prostate as well as glycogen content of testes were also noticed. The fructose content in the seminal vesicle was lowered whereas the testicular cholesterol was elevated as compared with the controls. The following com-pounds were obtained from the extract with chromatographic separation over Si-gel column;α-amyrin,β-amyrin,lupiol acetate, venenative, rhazine and yohimbine,Conclusion:At the dose level employed,Alstonia scholaris bark extract has a significant antifertility effect in male rast;the primary site of action may be post meiotic germ cells(Step19spermatids).R. 3Genetic analysis of growth and wood variations in Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit.显示文摘We selected 28 populations of Leucaena leucocephala from different geographical locations in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Orissa of India on the basis of height and girth at breast height (GBH). We evaluated fiber length, optical density, wall thickness, vessel element length, vessel element diameter, specific gravity and lignin of these populations of L. leucocephala in different sites. Populations had significant variations for all growth, wood and paper parameters. Girth at breast height (GBH) and specific gravity were the most important parameters for heritability and genetic gain, respectively. The minimum heritability was reported for vessel element length and genetic gain for fiber length. The populations were grouped into six clusters, cluster II had maximum number of populations (14) and clusters IV and VI had one population each. GBH contributed maximum of 34.39 % towards total divergence followed by specific gravity (14.02%). An economic technique to produce quality seed by establishing seed orchards with genetically divergent parents was suggested. The hybridization among the populations selected from diverse clusters could produce greater heterosis needed for higher growth and suitable wood and paper manufacturing parameters.E K. Pande A. 4D2 analysis for estimating genetic divergence in different clones of Dalbergia sissoo显示文摘Genetic divergence was studied in selected 36 genotypes of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb.on the basis of seven morphological parameters. The divergence among genotypes was estimated by Mahalanobis method and genotypes were grouped into clusters by Tocher's method. All the genotypes were classified into seven distinct clusters on the basis of seven morphological traits.Cluster 1 was the largest with 25 genotypes followed by Cluster 2(four genotypes).Cluster 3,5,6 and 7 were the divergent clusters. The D2 analysis revealed that D^2 value(39.42) between clone 5040 and clone 201 was recorded maximum. The intra-cluster distance ranged from 0.00(Cluster 3,5,6 and7) to 3.89(Cluster 1),the Cluster 3(clone 33) was the most divergent cluster with maximum inter cluster distance(13.97) with the Cluster 7.By the divergence analysis, the parents for hybridization from diverse clusters could be selected for heterotic hybrids.Ashok Kumar S.
