| 1 | The coppice-with-standards silvicultural system as applied to Eucalyptus plantations-a review显示文摘We review the management of Eucalyptus species under a coppice-with-standards(CWS) silvicultural system. CWS management results in product diversification, permitting production of small and large scale timber from the same stand. Eucalyptus species are suitable candidates for CWS management because: there are large worldwide plantation areas, sprouting capacity is high, and eucalypts are multipurpose species. We discuss(1) short rotation Eucalyptus coppice management for energy and pulping and(2) Eucalyptus seedling management for solid wood products. We review the literature and discuss experiences with Eucalyptus managed under the CWS system. We also assess projects dealing with Eucalyptus coppice management, stand density regulation, pruning, and stand and wood quality. The growth environment of the standard trees(heavy competition up to the first harvest, free growth afterwards) coupled with long rotations(>20 years) results in high quality logs for solid wood products. Early pruning should be applied to enhance wood quality. We propose a system for the silvicultural management of Eucalyptus under the CWS system, elaborating on the consequences of initial planting density, site productivity, and standard tree densities as well as timing of basic silvicultural applications. | Antonio Carlos FERRAZ FILHO José Roberto Soares SCOLFORO Blas MOLA-YUDEGO | 2014 | Journal of Forestry Research2014,25,2: | 3 |

| 4 | Water availability drives gradients of tree diversity, structure and functional traits in the Atlantic-Cerrado-Caatinga transition,Brazil显示文摘Aims Climate and soil are among the most important factors determin-ing variation in tree communities, but their effects have not been thoroughly elucidated to date for many vegetation features. In this study,we evaluate how climate and soil gradients affect gradients of vegetation composition, species diversity and dominance, structure and functional traits(seed mass and wood density)using over 327000 trees in 158 sites distributed along environmental gradients in the transitions among the Atlantic forest,Cerrado and Caatinga in Minas Gerais State(MG),Brazil(nearly 600000 km2).Methods Gradients in species, genus and family abundance in addition to basal area, stem density, species diversity(Fisher’s alpha),domin-ance percentage, seed mass and wood density were correlated using multiple regressions with environmental variables,as summarized in four principal component analysis axes(two climatic-precipi-tation seasonality and temperature range-and two edaphic-soil fertility and soil moisture).Additionally, ordinary kriging maps were used to better illustrate the gradients.Important Findings Multiple regression models indicate that all variables but domin-ance percentage were affected by one or more of the environmental gradients, but the average R2 was low(26.25%).Kriging maps rein-forced the patterns observed in the regression models.Precipitation seasonality and soil moisture gradients were the most important gra-dients affecting vegetation features. This finding suggests that water availability is an important determinant of vegetation features in these vegetation transitions. | Marcela de Castro Nunes Santos Terra Rubens Manoel dos Santos Jamir Afonso do Prado Júnior José Marcio de Mello José Roberto Soares Scolforo Marco Aurélio Leite Fontes Ivan Schiavini Aliny Aparecida dos Reis Inacio Thomaz Bueno Luiz Fernando Silva Magnago Hans ter Steege | 2018 | Journal of Plant Ecology2018,11,6: | 1 |
| 5 | Autoregressive spatial analysis and individual tree modeling as strategies for the management of Eremanthus erythropappus显示文摘The objectives of this study were to apply statistical techniques to discriminate fertilization treatments of Eremanthus erythropappus(DC.) Mac Leish.through autoregressive modeling, and to develop individual tree models for diameter and crown area(CA) projection to define management strategies for candeia plantations subjected to different fertilization treatments. This is an important tree species originating from the Brazilian Atlantic Rain forest and Savannah biomes, intensively used in the cosmetic industry. Nonetheless, to date, research has not addressed the management of natural stands or plantations of the species. Our experiment was located in Baependi, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and comprised of four randomized blocks and 13 treatments. The treatments consisted of 12 different regimes of fertilization plus a control. Each sample plot was composed of 50 plants plus two border plants in a planting spacing of 2.5 9 2.0 m and undergoing pruning at 5 and 6 years of age. Starting in the second year, total tree height(H) and circumference(at 1.30 m from the ground or breast height, CBH) were measured every 6 months. Starting in the fifth year CA was measured. Tree growth varied by fertilization strategy.Differences were detected by using an autoregressive approach, considering that standard statistical methods were not powerful enough to detect significant differences.Three growth groups were formed, and maximum growth was obtained for treatment 10(NPK, 8-28-16). Management guidelines are provided based on individual tree models for different fertilization levels. | Henrique Ferraco Scolforo Jose Roberto Soares Scolforo Jose Marcio de Mello Anto nio Carlos Ferraz Filho Diogo Francisco Rossoni Thiza Falqueto Altoe Antonio Donizette Oliveira Renato Ribeiro de Lima | 2016 | Journal of Forestry Research2016,27,3: | 0 |
| 6 | Behavior of wood basic density according to environmental variables显示文摘The relationships between climate conditions and wood density in tropical forests are still poorly understood. To quantify spatial dependence of wood density in the state of Minas Gerais(MG,Brazil),map spatial distribution of density, and correlate density with climate variables,we extracted data from the Forest Inventory of Minas Gerais for 1988 trees scaled throughout the territory and measured wood density of discs removed from the trees.Environmental variables were extracted from the database of the Ecological-Economic Zoning of Minas Gerais. For spatial analysis, tree densities were measured at 44 georeferenced sampling points. The data were subjected to exploratory analysis,variography,cross-validation,model selection, and ordinary kriging. The relationships between wood density and environmental variables were calculated using dispersion matrices, linear correlation, and regression.Wood density proved to be highly spatially dependent, reaching a correlation of 96%,and was highly continuous over a distance of 228 km.The distribution of wood density followed a continuous gradient of 514-659 kg m^(−3),enabling corre-lation with environment variables.Density was correlated with mean annual precipitation(−0.57),temperature(0.63),and evapotranspiration(0.83).Geostatistical methods proved useful in predicting wood density in native tropical forests with different climate conditions. Our results confirmed the sensitivity of wood density to climate change, which could affect future carbon stock in forests. | Gabriel Marcos Vieira Oliveira JoséMárcio de Mello Carlos Rogério de Mello JoséRoberto Soares Scolforo Eder Pereira Miguel Thiago Campos Monteiro | 2022 | Journal of Forestry Research2022,33,2: | 0 |
