Field evaluation of some bait additives against Indian crested porcupine(Hystrix indica)(Rodentia:Hystricidae)显示文摘This research study evaluated the effect of different additives on the bait consumption by Indian crested porcupine,a serious forest and agricultural pest, under field conditions.Different additives(saccharin, common salt, bone meal, fish meal, peanut butter, egg yolk, egg shell powder, yeast powder, mineral oil and coconut oil)at 2 and 5%each were tested for their relative preference, using groundnut-maize(1:1)as basic bait. All the additives were tested under a no-choice test pattern. For control tests,no additive was mixed with the basic bait.Saccharin at 5%concentration significantly enhanced the consumption of bait over the basic bait, while 2%saccharin supplemented bait resulted in a non-significant bait consumption. All other additives did not enhance the consumption of the bait material;rather, these worked as repellents. However, the repellency was lowest with the common salt, followed by egg yolk, egg shell powder, bone meal, peanut butter, mineral oil, fish meal and yeast powder, while coconut remained the most repellent compound. The present study suggested that groundnut-maize(1:1)supplemented with 5%saccharin was the preferred bait combination, and can be used with different rodenticides for the management of Indian crested porcupine. | Muhammad MUSHTAQ Iftikhar HUSSAIN Afsar MIAN Shahid MUNIR Irfan AHMED Abdul Aziz KHAN | 2013 | Integrative Zoology2013,8,3: | 0
Sero-Epidemiological Survey of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever among the Human Population of the Punjab Province in Pakistan显示文摘Dear Editor,Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever(CCHF),caused by the CCHF virus(CCHFV),is a tick-borne zoonotic infection characterized by myalgia,high-grade fever(>38℃),headache,nausea,bleeding from the body cavities, and in 10%–50%of cases, results in death(Swanepoel et al.1989).As CCHFV belongs to the Nairoviridae family, the virus can be transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks or by contact with the tissues or blood of infected animals(Bente et al.2013). | Muhammad Furqan Shahid Muhammad Zubair Shabbir Kamran Ashraf Muzaffar Ali Saima Yaqub Aziz Ul-Rahman Nageen Sardar Nadia Mukhtar Zarfishan Tahir Tahir Yaqub | 2020 | Virologica Sinica2020,35,4: | 0
Incentive-Driven Approach for Misbehavior Avoidance in Vehicular Networks显示文摘For efficient and robust information exchange in the vehicular adhoc network,a secure and trusted incentive reward is needed to avoid and reduce the intensity of misbehaving nodes and congestion especially in the case where the periodic beacons exploit the channel. In addition,we cannot be sure that all vehicular nodes eagerly share their communication assets to the system for message dissemination without any rewards.Unfortunately, there may be some misbehaving nodes and due to their selfish and greedy approach, these nodes may not help others on the network. To deal with this challenge,trust-based misbehavior avoidance schemes are generally reflected as the capable resolution. In this paper,we employed a fair incentive mechanism for cooperation aware vehicular communication systems. In order to deploy a comprehensive credit based rewarding scheme, the proposed rewardbased scheme fully depends on secure and reliable cryptographic procedures. In order to achieve the security goals,we used the cryptographic scheme to generate a certified public key for the authenticity of every message exchange over the network. We evaluated the friction of misbehaving vehicles and the effect of rewarding schemes in context with honest messages dissemination over the network. | Shahid Sultan Qaisar Javaid Eid Rehman Ahmad Aziz Alahmadi Nasim Ullah Wakeel Khan | 2022 | Computers, Materials & Continua2022,,3: | 0
Application of ferrous sulfate alleviates negative impact of cadmium in rice(Oryza sativa L.)显示文摘Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals[such as cadmium(Cd)]is becoming a serious global problem due to rapid development of social economy.Iron(Fe),being an important element, has been found effective in enhancing plant tolerance against biotic and abiotic stresses. The present study investigated the extent to which different levels of Ferrous sulphate(FeSO_(4))modulated the Cd tolerance of rice(Oryza sativa L.),when maintained in artificially Cd spiked regimes.A pot experiment was conducted under controlled conditions for 146 days,by using natural soil, mixed with different levels of CdCl_(2)[0(no Cd),0.5 and 1 mg/kg]together with the exogenous application of FeSO_(4) at[0(no Fe),1.5 and 3 mg/kg]levels to monitor different growth, gaseous exchange characteristics, oxidative stress, antioxidative responses, minerals accumulation, organic acid exudation patterns of O.sativa.Our results depicted that addition of Cd to the soil significantly(P<0.05)decreased plant growth and biomass, gaseous exchange parameters, mineral uptake by the plants, sugars(soluble, reducing, and non-reducing sugar)and altered the ultrastructure of chloroplasts, plastoglobuli, mitochondria, and many other cellular organelles in Cd-stressed O.sativa compared to those plants which were grown without the addition of Cd in the soil. However,Cd toxicity boosted the production of reactive oxygen species(ROS)by increasing the contents of malondialdehyde(MDA),which is the indication of oxidative stress in O.sativa and was also manifested by hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))contents and electrolyte leakage to the membrane bounded organelles.Although, activities of various antioxidative enzymes like superoxidase dismutase(SOD),peroxidase(POD),catalase(CAT)and ascorbate peroxidase(APX)and non-enzymatic antioxidants like phenolics, flavonoid, ascorbic acid, anthocyanin and proline contents increased up to a Cd level of 0.5 mg/kg in the soil but were significantly diminished at the highest Cd level of 1 mg/kg in the soil compared to those plants which were grown without the addition of Cd in the soil. The negative impacts of Cd injury were reduced by the application of FeSO_(4) which increased plant growth and biomass, improved photosynthetic apparatus, antioxidant enzymes, minerals uptake together with diminished exudation of organic acids as well as oxidative stress indicators in roots and shoots of O.sativa by decreasing Cd retention in different plant parts. These results shed light on the effectiveness of FeSO_(4) in improving the growth and upregulation of antioxidant enzyme activities of O.sativa in response to Cd stress. However, further studies at field levels are required to explore the mechanisms of FeSO_(4)-mediated reduction of the toxicity of not only Cd,but possibly also other heavy metals in plants. | JAVARIA AFZAL XIUKANG WANG MUHAMMAD HAMZAH SALEEM XUECHENG SUN SHAHID HUSSAIN IMRAN KHAN MUHAMMAD SHOAIB RANA SHAKEEL AHMED SAMRAH AFZAL AWAN SAJID FIAZ OMAR AZIZ KASHIF ALI KUBAR SHAFAQAT ALI CHENGXIAO HU | 2021 | BIOCELL2021,45,6: | 0
Risk factor profiles for gastric cancer prediction with respect to Helicobacter pylori:A study of a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan显示文摘BACKGROUND Gastric cancer(GC)is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.Diagnosis relies on histopathology and the number of endoscopies is increasing.Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)infection is a major risk factor.AIM To develop an in-silico GC prediction model to reduce the number of diagnostic surgical procedures. The meta-data of patients with gastroduodenal symptoms, risk factors associated with GC,and H.pylori infection status from Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi,Pakistan, were used with machine learning.METHODS A cohort of 341 patients was divided into three groups[normal gastric mucosa(NGM),gastroduodenal diseases(GDD),and GC].Information associated with socioeconomic and demographic conditions and GC risk factors was collected using a questionnaire.H.pylori infection status was determined based on urea breath test. The association of these factors and histopathological grades was assessed statistically.K-Nearest Neighbors and Random Forest(RF)machine learning models were tested.RESULTS This study reported an overall frequency of 64.2%(219/341)of H.pylori infection among enrolled subjects. It was higher in GC(74.2%,23/31)as compared to NGM and GDD and higher in males(54.3%,119/219)as compared to females.More abdominal pain(72.4%,247/341)was observed than other clinical symptoms including vomiting, bloating, acid reflux and heartburn. The majority of the GC patients experienced symptoms of vomiting(91%,20/22)with abdominal pain(100%,22/22).The multinomial logistic regression model was statistically significant and correctly classified 80%of the GDD/GC cases.Age,income level, vomiting, bloating and medication had significant association with GDD and GC.A dynamic RF GC-predictive model was developed, which achieved>80%test accuracy.CONCLUSION GC risk factors were incorporated into a computer model to predict the likelihood of developing GC with high sensitivity and specificity. The model is dynamic and will be further improved and validated by including new data in future research studies. Its use may reduce unnecessary endoscopic procedures. It is freely available. | Shahid Aziz Simone König Muhammad Umer Tayyab Saeed Akhter Shafqat Iqbal Maryum Ibrar Tofeeq Ur-Rehman Tanvir Ahmad Alfizah Hanafiah Rabaab Zahra Faisal Rasheed | 2023 | Artificial Intelligence in Gastroenterology2023,4,1: | 0
