REE geochemistry of suspended sediments from the rivers around the Yellow Sea and provenance indicators显示文摘Rare earth element (REE) compositions of the suspended sediments from the rivers around the Yellow Sea were different in that Korean river sediments (Han, Keum and Yeongsan Rivers) yield stronger fractionations than Chinese river sediments (Changjiang, Huanghe and Yalujiang), shown by obvious enrichments of LREE (light rare earth element) relative to UCC (upper continental crust). Variations of source rock compositions in the drainage basins are responsible for the differences of REE compositions between the river sediments. REE fractionation parameters including (La/Yb)UCC and (Gd/Yb)UCC as well as the ratios of La/Sc and Th/Sc can be treated as proper proxies for identifying the Chinese river sediments from those Korean river matters, and furthermore, for studying the provenances and paleoenvironmental changes of the marginal seas of China. | YANG Shouye LI Congxian C. | 3 | Research on preservation and enrichment mechanisms of organic matter in muddy sediment and mudstone显示文摘Using multidiscipline methodologies, the differences in preservation and enrichment mechanisms of organic matter (OM) in muddy sediment and mudstone are investigated. In clay fractions, concentra- tions of TOC and chloroform bitumen “A” are significantly higher than those in coarser fractions. This indicates that clay minerals (CM) play an important role in enriching OM. The content of chloroform bitumen “A” increases obviously in the clay fraction, which reveals that dissolvable OM is the main composition of coalesce with clay minerals. Furthermore, TG and DTA data show that OM enrichment mechanisms and preservation forms have multiplicity. Several exothermic peaks in the DTA curves demonstrate that muddy sediment and mudstone contain a number of bioclasts and amorphous OM besides dissolvable OM. Through analyzing with XRD and DTA after mudstone samples were pretreated, the conclusions can be arrived at. Firstly, CM interlayer space of XRD curves and exothermic peaks of DTA curves both change as temperature increases. Secondly, the changes of CM interlayer space and exothermic peaks are concordant and stable around 350℃. All these are the features that OM enters CM interlayers to form stable organo-clay complexes. Therefore, the combination format of OM with CM is not only surface adsorption, partial OM enters CM interlayers to form stable organo-clay complexes. Finally, through the research on OM preservation forms and enrichment mechanisms in muddy sedi- ment and mudstone, the hydrocarbon-generation processes and the global carbon cycle and budget can be explained. | CAI JinGong BAO YuJin YANG ShouYe WANG XingXin FAN DaiDu XU JinLi WANG AiPing | 2007 | Science China Earth Sciences2007,50,5: | 25
Does chemical index of alteration(CIA) reflect silicate weathering and monsoonal climate in the Changjiang River basin?显示文摘Chemical weathering of continental silicates significantly influences global climate change, earth surface processes, material cy-cling and oceanic chemical composition. How to quantitatively reconstruct chemical weathering history has become an important issue in global change research.Chemical index of alteration(CIA) has been widely used as a quantitative indicator for estimating the degree of silicate weathering. However, its method of calculation and the limitations of its application are not well understood. In this study,we calculated CIA values from suspended particulate matter collected from the mainstream and major tributaries of the Changjiang River. The values yielded considerable variations at different temporal and spatial scales. The average CIA values increased from the upper to middle-lower reaches, and were lower in the suspended samples taken during the flood than in the dry season. The spatial variation in the CIA is predominantly controlled by basinal monsoon climate. In contrast, the temporal varia-tion in the Changjiang River basin is controlled mainly by the changing provenance of suspended samples in relation to the shift of the precipitation zone. The CIA probably indicates the integrated weathering history in the river basin, and thus, cannot be used as a reliable proxy of instantaneous chemical weathering.Furthermore, the calculation method and hydrodynamic sorting also influence the CIA values. Therefore, caution should be taken when using the CIA as a proxy for studying chemical weathering from different regions. | SHAO JingQing YANG ShouYe | 2012 | Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,10: | 22
Detrital zircon U-Pb ages of Late Cenozoic sediments from the Yangtze delta:Implication for the evolution of the Yangtze River显示文摘Detrital zircon grains of Late Cenozoic sediments dated back to ca.3.6 Ma from core DY03 in the Yangtze delta were dated by LA-ICP-MS,in order to investigate the sedimentary provenance and to find some clue for the evolution of the Yangtze River. Most of the detrital zircon U-Pb ages are distributed at 100 300 Ma,350 550 Ma,600 1000 Ma,1400 2000 Ma and 2200 2800 Ma,which correspond well with the main tectonic and magmatic events in the Yangtze drainage. The detrital zircon age patterns show distinct difference between the 3 samples below 189.8 m and other 6 above 189.8 m.43% 55% zircons in the 3 samples below 189.8 m fall within Cretaceous, while ages from 150 to 2800 Ma are distributed with no obvious peaks, which indicate the sedimentary provenance may be limited to the lower Yangtze drainage. The 6 samples above 189.8 m show similar age patterns, and the ages are relatively evenly distributed, indicating the sedimentary provenance broadened distinctly. All 6 samples deposited later than ca.3.2 Ma show age information from the upper Yangtze drainage (including the Emeishan large igneous province),indicating that the Three Gorges may have already been cut through by then. | JIA JunTao ZHENG HongBo HUANG XiangTong WU FuYuan YANG ShouYe | 2010 | Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,15: | 20
Reconstruction of flood events over the last 150 years in the lower reaches of the Changjiang River显示文摘The reconstruction of paleofloods in the Holocene has become one research highlight for the present global change study. The core sediments from one newly-emerged bar in the lower Changjiang River(Yangtze River)mainstream were collected for grain size and organic elemental measurements, with aim to reconstruct the flood events over the past 150 years.Major grain size parameters such as mean grain size, probability cumulative curve and C-M diagram of the core sediments clearly indicate the flood event deposition.Furthermore, the TOC/TN ratios in the sediments can indicate flood events considering that during the flash floods, strong surface erosion in the upper and lower reaches of the Changjiang River can transport a large amount of undecomposed plant debris and organic components with relatively low C/N ratios into the lower mainstream.Based on 210Pb dating and sedimentary geochemical results, the research profile recorded several large floods happened from 1850 to 1954,which agrees well with the historical documents and hydrological observations.Interesting to note that the flood events since the 1960s cannot be distinctly recognized on the basis of sediment grain size and organic elemental compositions of the profile, which mainly reflects the intensive human activities over the last fifty years, especially condense dam construction, have significantly changed the characters of suspended sediment into the lower mainstream. | ZHAN Wang YANG ShouYe LIU XiaoLi LI JianWei CHOI ManSik | 2010 | Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,21: | 9
A 600-year flood history in the Yangtze River drainage:Comparison between a subaqueous delta and historical records显示文摘Based on grain size analysis and high-resolution elemental scanning of core YD0901,taken from the subaqueous Yangtze River delta,a 600-year flood history was reconstructed for the Yangtze River drainage system.Zr/Rb ratios were chosen as a proxy for Yangtze River floods.Zr resides mainly in the coarse-grained minerals, and Rb is found in the fine-grained minerals. When floods occur, the discharge of the Yangtze River increases, which carries more coarse-grained minerals into the East China Sea.Therefore, deposition of coarse-grained minerals significantly increases relative to fine-grained minerals on the subaqueous delta, and subsequently the Zr/Rb ratios also increase. The higher the Zr/Rb peaks, the greater number of coarse particles deposited by saltation processes.Zr/Rb peaks correlate very well with historical records for Yangtze River floods.Especially at about AD 1870,the Zr/Rb ratio reached a maximum value over the last 600 years, which is consistent with 'the extreme flood event' in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River in AD 1870,as indicated in the historical records. Results show that floods have occurred at a relatively high frequency over the last 600 years, which is consistent with historical records when, during the Ming-Qing Dynasty, floods occurred once every 4 years. In addition, spectral analysis of the Zr/Rb ratio showed that there is close link between the Yangtze River floods and ENSO intensity. | WANG MinJie ZHENG HongBo XIE Xin FAN DaiDu YANG ShouYe ZHAO QuanHong WANG Ke | 2011 | Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,2: | 9

Clay minerals and geochemistry of the bottom sediments in the northwestern East China Sea显示文摘Clay minerals of 34 sediments collected from the northwestern continental shelf of the East China Sea have been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The clay mineral distribution is mainly controlled by the sediment source and the dominant circulation pattern. The predominant clay mineral in our study area is illite comprising more than 67% of the whole clay fraction. The highest concentration of illite (>68%) is found in the southeastern offshore parts beyond the reach of terrigenous input from the Jeju Island. It means that these illites are largely transported by the Kuroshio Current from the South China Sea (SCS). Smectite is highly concentrated in the northwest middle part and in the outer-shelf mud patch. It seems to be due to the high supply of smectite transported from China where fine-grained sediments are discharged from modern and ancient Huanghe (Yellow) River. The relatively high abundant kaolinite is likely derived from the Changjiang (Yangtze) River via the Taiwan Warm Current. In contrast, large amounts of chlorite and high chlorite/kaolinite ratios occur in the northwestern area, reflecting the transportation by the Yellow Sea Coastal Current from the southern Yellow Sea. The discrimination diagrams clearly show that the sediments in the northwestern East China Sea are ultimately sourced from Chinese rivers, especially from the Huanghe River, whereas the sediment in the northeast part might come from the Jeju Island. The muddy sediments of the Changjiang River’s submerged delta have much lower 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.716 2–0.718 0) than those of the Shandong Peninsular mud wedge (0.721 6–0.724 9), which are supposed to be originated from the Huanghe River, suggesting the distribution pattern of 87Sr/86Sr ratios as a new tracer to discriminate the provenance of shelf sediments in the study area. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the outer-shelf muddy sediments ranged from 0.7169 to 0.7216 in a wide range and was between those of the Huanghe River and Changjiang River sediments, suggesting multiple sources of the sediment in the area. | Jeungsu YOUN Shouye YANG Yong Ahn PARK | 2007 | Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2007,25,3: | 5
A Review of Comminution Age Method and Its Potential Application in the East China Sea to Constrain the Time Scale of Sediment Source-to-Sink Process显示文摘The East China Sea(ECS) is a river-dominated epicontinental sea, linking the Asian continent to the northwestern Pacific via the large rivers originating from Tibetan Plateau. The relevant huge influx of riverine detritus has developed unique sedimentary systems in the ECS during the Quaternary, offering ideal terrestrial archives for reconstructing Quaternary paleoenvironmental changes and studying land-sea interactions. Overall, two characteristic river systems dominate the sedimentary systems and sediment source to sink transport patterns in the ECS, represented by the Changjiang(Yangtze River) and Huanghe(Yellow River) for the large river system and Taiwan rivers for the small river system. Given this, the sediments derived from both river systems bear distinct features in terms of parent rock lithology, provenance weathering and sediment transport. Previous studies mostly focus on either the ‘source' discrimination or the ‘sink' records of the sedimentary system in the ECS, while the source to sink process linking the land and sea, in particular its time scale, has been poorly understood. Here we introduce a newly-developed dating technique, the ‘comminution age' method, which offers a quantitative constraint on the time scale of sediment transfer from its ultimate source to the final depositional sink. This novel method is of great significance for improving our understanding on the earth surface processes including tectonic-climate driven weathering, and sediment recycling in relation to landscape evolution and marine environmental changes. The application of comminution age method in the ECS will provide important constraints on sediment source-to-sink process and more evidences for the construction of late Quaternary paleoenvironmental changes under these unique sedimentary systems. | LI Chao YANG Shouye LIAN Ergang BI Lei ZHANG Zhaofeng | 2015 | Journal of Ocean University of China2015,14,3: | 4

Origin of the springtime South China Sea Warm Current in the southwestern Taiwan Strait: Evidence from seawater oxygen isotope显示文摘Oxygen isotope(δ^18O)of seawater is an excellent proxy for tracing the origins of water masses and their mixing processes.Combining with hydrographic observation, hybrid coordinate ocean model(HYCOM)analysis data, and seawater oxygen isotope,we investigated the source of the South China Sea Warm Current(SCSWC)in the southwestern Taiwan Strait and its underlying mechanism. Results show that the Kuroshio subsurface water(KSSW)can intrude the continental slope in the southwestern Taiwan Strait, and thereby climb up the continental slope coupled with upwelling.Theδ^18O-salinity relationship further indicates that in spring, the SCSWC in the southwestern Taiwan Strait originates from the upslope deflection of the slope current formed by the KSSW intrusion into the South China Sea,rather than from the west segment of the SCSWC formed to the east of Hainan Island. In addition, the southward flowing Zhe-Min Coastal Current(ZMCC)can reach as far as the Taiwan Bank(TB)and deflects offshore over the western TB at approximately 23.5°N,to some extent affecting the SCSWC.Moreover, this study reveals that seawaterδ^18O is exquisitely sensitive to the determination of the origin and transport of water masses as compared with traditional potential temperature-salinity plot(θ-S)and HYCOM analysis data.In addition, their coupling can more reliably interpret the mixing processes of shelf water masses. | Dongyu CHEN Ergang LIAN Yeqiang SHU Shouye YANG Yalong LI Chao LI Pengfei LIU Ni SU | 2020 | Science China Earth Sciences2020,63,10: | 2
