| 1 | Therapeutic potential of Gastrodia elata Blume for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease显示文摘Several studies have demonstrated that the Chinese herb Gastrodia elata Blume can protect against amyloid beta-peptide (Aβ)-induced cell death. To investigate the possible therapeutic effects of Gastrodia elata Blume on Alzheimer's disease, we established a rat model of Alzheimer's disease by injecting Aβ 25-35 into bilateral hippocampi. These rats were intragastrically administered 500 or 1 000 mg/kg Gastrodia elata Blume per day for 52 consecutive days. Morris water maze tests showed that Gastrodia elata Blume treatment significantly improved the spatial memory of Alzheimer's disease rats. Congo red staining revealed that Gastrodia elata Blume significantly reduced the number of amyloid deposits in the hippocampus of these rats. Western blot analysis showed that choline acetyltransferase expression in the medial septum and hippocampus was significantly increased by the treatment of Gastrodia elata Blume,while Ellman method showed significant decrease in the activity of acetylcholinesterase in all three regions (prefrontal cortex,medial septum and hippocampus). | 2 | DISLOCATION DISSOCIATIONS AND FAULTENERGIES IN Ni_3Al ALLOYS DOPED WITH PALLADIUM显示文摘Dislocation structures in polycrystalline Ni 3Al alloy doped with palladium deformed at room temperature have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The structure consists mainly of dislocations dissociated into a /2〈011〉 super partials bounding an anti phase boundary (APB). Dislocations dissociated into a /3〈112〉 super Shockley partials bounding a superlattice intrinsic stacking fault (SISF) are also common debris. The majority of the SISFs are truncated loops, i.e. the partials bounding the SISF are of similar Burgers vector. These faulted loops are generated from APB coupled dislocations, according to a mechanism for formation of SISFs proposed by Suzuki et al , and recently modified by Chiba et al . The APB energies for {111} and {010} slip planes are measured to be 144±20 mJ/m 2 and 102±11 mJ/m 2 respectively, and the SISF energy has been estimated to be 12 mJ/m 2 in this alloy. It is concluded that the dislocation structure in Ni 74.5 Pd 2Al 23.5 alloy deformed at room temperature is similar to that in binary Ni 3Al, and the difference in fault energies between these two alloys is small. Thus, it seems unlikely that the enhancement of ductility of Ni 74.5 Pd 2Al 23.5 results from only such a small decrease of the ordering energy of the alloy. | 6 | MRI of gastric carcinoma:Results of T and N-staging in an in vitro study显示文摘AIM:To determine the accuracy of 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of gastric wall invasion and perigastric lymph node metastasis in gastric adenocarcinoma.METHODS: Twenty resected gastric specimens containing 20 tumors were studied with a 1.5-T MR system using a commercial head surface coil. MR scanning was performed with a T1 weighted image (TR/TE = 500/20), and a T2 weighted image (TR/TE=2500/90). MR findings were compared with pathologic findings.RESULTS: A T1-weighted image demonstrated three layers in the normal gastric wall. All of the gastric tumors were well demonstrated by lesions and location. In a MRI findings of gastric wall invasion, there was 1 case of T1, 7 of T2, 11 of T3. Pathologic results of resected specimens included 3 cases of pT1, 4 of pT2, and 12 of pT3. The accuracy of T staging with MRI was 74% (14 of 19). MRI findings of lymph node me-tastasis included 6 cases of N0, 13 cases of N1. | 7 | Development of a vision-based ground target detection and tracking system for a small unmanned helicopter显示文摘It is undoubted that the latest trend in the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) community is towards visionbased unmanned small-scale helicopter, utilizing the maneuvering capabilities of the helicopter and the rich information of visual sensors, in order to arrive at a versatile platform for a variety of applications such as navigation, surveillance, tracking, etc. In this paper, we present the development of a vision- based ground target detection and tracking system for a small UAV helicopter. More specifically, we propose a real-time vision algorithm, based on moment invariants and two-stage pattern recognition, to achieve automatic ground target detection. In the proposed algorithm, the key geometry features of the target are extracted to detect and identify the target. Simultaneously, a Kalman filter is used to estimate and predict the position of the target, referred to as dynamic features, based on its motion model. These dynamic features are then combined with geometry features to identify the target in the second-stage of pattern recognition, when geometry features of the target change significantly due to noise and disturbance in the environment. Once the target is identified, an automatic control scheme is utilized to control the pan/tilt visual mechanism mounted on the helicopter such that the identified target is to be tracked at the center of the captured images. | 8 | Reversed vascularized second metatarsal flap for reconstruction of Manske type ⅢB and Ⅳ thumb hypoplasia with reduced donor site morbidity显示文摘Background:The predominant method for Manske type ⅢB and Ⅳ thumb hypoplasia is pollicization.However,for those who are not willing to sacrifice the index finger,a method that could reconstruct a functionally capable and aesthetically acceptable thumb remains desirable.This study aimed to investigate and assess the functional and radiographic outcomes of utilizing a reversed vascularized second metatarsal composite flap for thumb reconstruction as a new alternative.Methods:From May 2014 to January 2017,15 patients with Manske type ⅢB or Ⅳ thumb hypoplasia who were admitted to the Department of Hand Surgery,Beijing Jishuitan Hospital were included in this study.An osteocutaneous flap containing a section of second metatarsal and its distal head was transferred in reversed position to reconstruct carpometacarpal joint.The donor site was reconstructed by a split half of the third metatarsal.Various functional reconstructions were commenced at second stage.The reconstructed thumbs were evaluated using the Kapandji score,pinch force,and the capacities of performing daily activities through a detailed questionnaire.Results:Among these 15 patients(seven type ⅢB and eight type Ⅳ),there were ten boys and five girls with median age of 4.2 years(range:2.0–7.0 years).There were seven right,three left,and five bilateral thumbs for whom only the right thumb received surgery.There were 14 metatarsal flaps survived(14/15).With an average follow-up of 19.2 months,the reconstructed thumbs had acceptable functional and aesthetic outcomes and the donor foot presented in decent appearance without signs of impaired function.All 15 children have improved the Kapandji score(from 0 to an average of 6.7),pinch force(from 0 to an average of 1.5 kg),with ability of grip and pen holding.X-ray indicated continuous bone growth.Patients and parents had good acceptance of the new thumb.Conclusions:Reconstruction of an unstable hypoplastic thumb(Manske type ⅢB and Ⅳ)with use of a vascularized metatarsal is an effective strategy.It offers an alternative solution for parents insisting on saving the thumb. | De-Di Tong Le-Hao Wu Peng-Cheng Li Yan-Bo Rong Bo Liu WPAndrew Lee Qi-Pei Wei Lu Liu He-Jia Miao Shan-Lin Chen | 2019 | Chinese Medical Journal2019,,21: | 6 |
| 9 | Design and implementation of a leader-follower cooperative control system for unmanned helicopters显示文摘In this paper,we present a full scheme for the cooperative control of multiple unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)helicopters.We adopt the leader-follower pattern to maintain a fixed geometrical formation while navigating the UAVs following certain trajectories.More specifically,the leader is commanded to fly on some predefined trajectories,and each follower is controlled to maintain its position in formation using the measurement of its inertial position and the information of the leader position and velocity,obtained through a wireless modem.More specifications are made for multiple UAV formation flight.In order to avoid possible collisions of UAV helicopters in the actual formation flight test,a collision avoidance scheme based on some predefined alert zones and protected zones is employed.Simulations and experimental results are presented to verify our design. | Ben YUN Ben M. | 10 | Incarceration of a colonoscope in an inguinal hernia: Case report and literature review显示文摘Incarceration of an endoscope in an inguinal hernia may occur during the course of routine colonoscopy. The incarceration may occur on insertion or withdrawal and frequently the hernia is not suspected prior to the colonoscopy. Most commonly, a left sided inguinal hernia is involved, however right inguinal hernias may be implicated in subjects with altered anatomy post abdominal surgery. Incarceration of an endoscope in an inguinal hernia has been seldom reported in the literature which is likely to be related to under reporting. A range of techniques have been suggested by various authors over the last four decades to manage this unusual complication of colonoscopy. These techniques include utilizing fluoroscopy, manual external pressure and/or the fitting of a cap onto the tip of the colonoscope to facilitate colonoscopic navigation. The authors present a case report of incarceration of the colonoscope on withdrawal in an unsuspected left inguinal hernia with a review of the literature on the management of this colonoscopic complication. | 11 | Near-fault ground motions with prominent acceleration pulses:pulse characteristics and ductility demand显示文摘Major earthquakes of last 15 years (e.g., Northridge 1994, Kobe 1995 and Chi-Chi 1999) have shown that many near-fault ground motions possess prominent acceleration pulses. Some of the prominent ground acceleration pulses are related to large ground velocity pulses, others are caused by mechanisms that are totally different from those causing the velocity pulses or fling steps. Various efforts to model acceleration pulses have been reported in the literature. In this paper, research results from a recent study of acceleration pulse prominent ground motions and an analysis of structural damage induced by acceleration pulses are summarized. The main results of the study include: (1) temporal characteristics of acceleration pulses; (2) ductility demand spectrum of simple acceleration pulses with respect to equivalent classes of dynamic systems and pulse characteristic parameters; and (3) estimation of fundamental period change under the excitation of strong acceleration pulses. The proposed controller is a hybrid of proportional-integral-differential (PID) control, whose main function is for trajectory tracking, and a chatter-based ILC, whose main function is for hysteresis compensation. Stability analysis of the proposed ILC is presented, with the PID included in the dynamic of the piezoelectric actuator. | 15 | Identification and characterization of GLOBE, a major gene controlling fruit shape and impacting fruit size and marketability in tomato显示文摘Within large-fruited germplasm,fruit size is influenced by flat and globe shapes.Whereas flat fruits are smaller and retain better marketability,globe fruits are larger and more prone to cuticle disorders.Commercial hybrids are often developed from crosses between flat and globe shaped parents because flat shape is thought to be dominant and fruit size intermediate.The objectives of this study were to determine the genetic basis of flat/globe fruit shape in large-fruited fresh-market tomato germplasm and to characterize its effects on several fruit traits.Twenty-three advanced single plant selections from the Fla.8000×Fla.8111B cross were selectively genotyped using a genome-wide SNP array,and inclusive composite interval mapping identified a single locus on the upper arm of chromosome 12 associated with shape,which we termed globe.A 238-plant F 2 population and 69 recombinant inbred lines for this region from the same parents delimited globe to approximately 392-kilobases.A germplasm survey representing materials from multiple breeding programs demonstrated that the locus explains the flat/globe shape broadly.A single base insertion in an exon of Solyc12g006860,a gene annotated as a brassinosteroid hydroxylase,segregated completely with shape in all populations tested.CRISPR/Cas9 knock out plants confirmed this gene as underlying the globe locus.In silico analysis of the mutant allele of GLOBE among 595 wild and domesticated accessions suggested that the allele arose very late in the domestication process.Fruit measurements in three genetic backgrounds evidenced that globe impacts fruit size and several fruit shape attributes,pedicel length/width,and susceptibility of fruit to weather check.The mutant allele of GLOBE appears mostly recessive for all traits except fruit size where it acts additively. | Edgar Sierra-Orozco Reza Shekasteband Eudald Illa-Berenguer Ashley Snouffer Esther van der Knaap Tong Geon Lee Samuel F.Hutton | 2021 | Horticulture Research2021,8,1: | 2 |

| 17 | Novel metastable Bi:Co and Bi:Fe alloys nanodots@carbon as anodes for high rate K-ion batteries显示文摘Bi is a promising anode material for potassium-ion batteries(PIBs)due to its high theoretical capacity.However,severe pulverization upon cycling limits its practical applications.In this work,we propose a new approach of using metastable alloys with Bi elements.Metastable Bi:Co and Bi:Fe alloys nanodots@carbon anode materials(Bi:Co and Bi:Fe@C)are synthesized for the first time via simple annealing of their metal-organic frameworks(MOF)precursors.These prepared materials are demonstrated as ideal hosts for high-rate K-ion storage.Bi_(0.85)Co_(0.15)@C and Bi_(0.83)Fe_(0.17)@C electrodes respectively deliver superior 178 and 253 mAh·g^(−1)at 20 A·g^(−1),as well as stable cycling performance at 2 A·g^(−1).Ex situ scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),X-ray diffraction(XRD),and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)studies on Bi:Co@C indicate that the elemental Co separates out during the initial potassiation and stands during the following discharge/charge cycles.In situ formed Co precipitates can act as(1)“conductive binders”as well as(2)“separators”to prevent the severe aggregation of adjacent active elemental Bi nanoparticles and(3)accelerate the potassiation/de-potassiation kinetics in elemental Bi precipitates after initial discharge/charge cycles.This work could inspire the development of metal-type anodes. | Zhongqiu Tong Tianxing Kang Yan Wu Fan Zhang Yongbing Tang Chun-Sing Lee | 2022 | Nano Research2022,15,8: | 2 |
