1Investigation and assessment of micropollutants and associated biological effects in wastewater treatment processes显示文摘Currently, the wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)attempt to achieve the shifting from general pollution parameters control to reduction of organic micropollutants discharge. However, they have not been able to satisfy the increasing ecological safety needs. In this study, the removal of micropollutants was investigated, and the ecological safety was assessed for a local WWTP.Although the total concentration of 31 micropollutants detected was reduced by 83%using the traditional biological treatment processes, the results did not reflect chemicals that had poor removal efficiencies and low concentrations.Of the five categories of micropollutants, herbicides, insecticides, and bactericides were difficult to remove, pharmaceuticals and UV filters were effectively eliminated. The specific photosynthesis inhibition effect and non-specific bioluminescence inhibition effect from wastewater were detected and evaluated using hazardous concentration where 5%of aquatic organisms are affected. The photosynthesis inhibition effect from wastewater in the WWTP was negligible, even the untreated raw wastewater. However, the bioluminescence inhibition effect from wastewater which was defined as the priority biological effect, posed potential ecological risk.To decrease non-specific biological effects, especially of macromolecular dissolved organic matter, overall pollutant reduction strategy is necessary.Meanwhile, the ozonation process was used to further decrease the bioluminescence inhibition effects from the secondary effluent;≥0.34 g O 3/g DOC of ozone dose was recommended for micropollutants elimination control and ecological safety.Xiaoyan Y.Ma Ke Dong Lei Tang Yongkun Wang Xiaochang C.Wang Huu Hao Ngo Rong Chen Na Wang 2020Journal of Environmental Sciences2020,32,8:3
2Forest characteristics and population structure of Glyptostrobus pensilis, a globally endangered relict species of southeastern China显示文摘The Chinese water pine Glyptostrobus pensilis is the sole surviving species of the genus Glyptostrobus. It is endemic to southern China, central Vietnam, and eastern Laos, and today it is nearly extinct in the wild. Forest community characteristics and population structure of G. pensilis in China have remained un-known up to now. We investigated six swamp forest stands and analyzed their forest community characteristics (i.e. vertical stratification, species composition, and diversity) and population structure, including the frequency distribution of DBH (diameter at breast height) and age-classes as found in Fujian Province, southeastern China. The vertical stratifications of all the forest stands were rather simple. The remaining wild specimens ranged from roughly 15 to some 357 years for an average of ca. 85 years, with only a few individuals less than 20 years old. Compared with the stands and populations of G. pensilis in Vietnam, the taxonomic compositions of the stands in the two regions were different, except for the dominant species-G. pensilis. The Shannon-Wiener index showed the overstory of each stand had much lower diversity (0.26 on average) in Fujian Province than that (1.97 on average) in Vietnam, whereas the diversity indices were about the same (around 2.41) for the understories in the two regions. Furthermore, we discovered 18 G. pensilis seedlings at the study sites in Fujian Province. This discovery demonstrates that G. pensilis regeneration is extremely poor and its populations are declining, although these populations are rela-tively healthier than those in Vietnam.Cindy Q. 3Using Visual MODFLOW Model to Assess the Efficiency of Subsurface Barrier Wall for Groundwater Flow Regulation and Reduction of Saline Intrution显示文摘Barrier walls effectively store water, regulate underground flows, improve exploitable reserves and prevent saltwater intrusion. The effectiveness of the underground barrier wall depends not only on the hydrogeological structure, the technical parameters of the wall but also on the layout scheme of the exploitation well system. The results showed that in natural conditions, the ground water level upstream of the barrier wall rose in the presence of a barrier wall.In wells located downstream of high barrier walls, the water level decreased. The amount of underground current flowing into the sea decreased, the annual average value of the whole region decreased was 316 m3/day and night. In presence of a wall, both the water level and the amount of evaporation increased. The average increase in evaporation volume during the calculation period of ten thousand days with walls was 4.114 m3/d.So in presence of a wall, the amount of water that can be exploited increases by the total amount of evaporation plus the decrease in discharge to the sea and is equal to 4,424 m3/d.In the exploitation condition,if the water level in the presence of wall is kept as low as in the absence of wall, the exploitation flow will increase to about 4,400 m3/day and night. From the calculated water level values when there is a wall and without a wall,we can see that if the exploitation flow in presence of a wall and in the absence of wall is the same, the water level drop at the calculated observation wells upstream of the wall will decrease from 0.21 m to 3.97 m.The condition of effective exploitation of the wall depends on the mining scheme. The exploitation scheme is reasonable, the exploitation flow of the wells does not exceed the allowable flow so as not to cause the drying of the aquifer at the location of the well. The upstream area of the wall reflects quite clearly as the Total dissolved solids content in observation wells upstream of the wall at the end of the calculation time is significantly reduced compared to that without the wall, ranging from 69 mg/L to 5,629 mg/L.In the presence of a wall, the water level of observation wells upstream of the wall is higher than that of without a wall from 0.10 m to 0.74 m.Nguyen Minh Khuyen Doan Van Long Nguyen Tien Bach Tang Huu Dong Bui Cong Du Dang Dinh Phuc 2021Journal of Environmental Science and Engineering(A)2021,10,3:0
