Advanced Mueller matrix ellipsometry:Instrumentation and emerging applications显示文摘Mueller matrix ellipsometry(MME)provides the 4×4 Mueller matrix of a sample under test, which determines how the state of polarization is changed as light interacts with the sample.Due to the redundant information contained in the Mueller matrix,MME has gained more and more extensive applications in the characterization of surfaces, interfaces, thin films, and nanostructures. In addition, the instrumentation of MME has also achieved great developments since its advent in the 1970 s.In this paper,we will first review the basic principle as well as the common system layouts of MME for the full Mueller matrix measurement. Then, the basic procedure of ellipsometry data analysis is reviewed. After that, some new developments in MME in our lab for different applications are introduced, including the broadband MME,the high-resolution imaging MME,and the high-speed MME.Some emerging applications of the developed MMEs are also presented. Conclusions and perspectives of the advanced ellipsometry are finally drawn and discussed. | CHEN XiuGuo GU HongGang LIU JiaMin CHEN Chao LIU ShiYuan | 2022 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2022,65,9: | 2
Apparent ages of suspended sediment and soil erosion of the Pearl River (Zhujiang) drainage basin显示文摘The carbon isotopic composition (Δ 14 C,δ 13 C) and apparent ages of suspended sediment were determined in the Pearl River in the years 1998,2000 and 2005.These results indicate that suspended POC consists mostly of young carbon and some 'old carbon'.Apparent ages of suspended POC range from 540 to 2050 a BP.The apparent ages are older in the Xijiang and Beijiang Rivers, while these values are variable in the Dongjiang River, including old and young samples. The suspended POCδ 13 C values increase with increasing Δ 14 C in the Pearl River, indicating that its source is soil and bedrock from depths under 15 30 cm.Since the organic carbon of the surface soil is quickly decomposed when it enters the rivers, its carbon isotopic characteristics are insignificant in suspended sediment. In the Pearl River drainage basin, there are areas with more severe soil erosion than others. For example, erosion is much more severe in the Xijiang River drainage basin when compared to the light soil erosion in the Dongjiang River drainage basin. | WEI XiuGuo SHEN ChengDe LI NingLi WANG FuShun DING Ping WANG Ning GUO ZhiXing LIU KeXin | 2010 | Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,15: | 2

Remote Absolute Roll-Angle Measurement in Range of 180°Based on Polarization Modulation显示文摘Remote measurement of object orientation is often required in many applications.Out of the six degrees of freedom(DoF)that determine object orientation in space, the roll angle is the most difficult to measure using optical methods. In this letter,we propose a remote Stokes roll-angle sensor that measures roll angles from the detected Stokes vectors of modulated polarized light retroreflected from a sensing unit comprised simply of a retarder and a planar reflection mirror.Experimental results have shown that the proposed sensor can realize absolute roll angle measurement in an unprecedented range of 180°with a maximum absolute error of less than 0.25°and a measurement resolution of better than 0.01°.The proposed sensor adopts a coaxial design and takes the advantages of compactness, simplicity and low cost, and moreover, can be further expanded to a three-DoF angle sensor due to the sensitivity of the sensing unit to other two kinds of angles(pitch and yaw). | Xiuguo Chen Jinbao Liao Honggang Gu Chuanwei Zhang Hao Jiang Shiyuan Liu | 2020 | Nanomanufacturing and Metrology2020,3,3: | 1
Preparation and characterization of polypropylene/silica composite particle with interpenetrating network via hot emulsion sol–gel approach显示文摘A novel interpenetrating structural ultrafine polypropylene-silica nanocomposite particles were synthesized by a modified sol–gel approach in the presence of the melt polypropylene emulsion. A series of samples with different polypropylene content was prepared to investigate the unique characteristics of this original nanocomposite. The thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry results showed that the nanocomposites had the interpenetrating structure and good thermal stability, and the crystallization behavior of polypropylene was confined by the silica matrix. The interpenetrating structure of nanocomposites was also suggested by the nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurement results. The scanning electronic microscope and transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the nanocomposites had irregular particle morphology. The nanoparticle tracking analysis results show that the mean size of the nanocomposites was around 160 nm. According to the results obtained from different measurements,a reasonable formation mechanism was proposed. | Lei Zu Ruirui Li Longyi Jin Huiqin Lian Yang Liu Xiuguo Cui | 2014 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2014,24,1: | 0
New method for estimating strike and dip based on structural expansion orientation for 3D geological modeling显示文摘Strike and dip are essential to the description of geological features and therefore play important roles in 3D geological modeling.Unevenly and sparsely measured orientations from geological field mapping pose problems for the geological modeling, especially for covered and deep areas. This study developed a new method for estimating strike and dip based on structural expansion orientation, which can be automatically extracted from both geological and geophysical maps or profiles.Specifically, strike and dip can be estimated by minimizing an objective function composed of the included angle between the strike and dip and the leave-one-out cross-validation strike and dip.We used angle parameterization to reduce dimensionality and proposed a quasi-gradient descent(QGD)method to rapidly obtain a near-optimal solution, improving the time-efficiency and accuracy of objective function optimization with the particle swarm method.A synthetic basin fold model was subsequently used to test the proposed method, and the results showed that the strike and dip estimates were close to the true values. Finally, the proposed method was applied to a real fold structure largely covered by Cainozoic sediments in Australia. The strikes and dips estimated by the proposed method conformed to the actual geological structures more than those of the vector interpolation method did.As expected, the results of 3D geological implicit interface modeling and the strike and dip vector field were much improved by the addition of estimated strikes and dips. | Yabo ZHAO Weihua HUA Guoxiong CHEN Dong LIANG Zhipeng LIU Xiuguo LIU | 2021 | Frontiers of Earth Science2021,15,3: | 0
ASF1 regulates asexual and sexual reproduction in Stemphylium eturmiunum by DJ-1 stimulation of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway显示文摘Most fungi display a mixed mating system with both asexual and sexual reproduction. The timing of the two modes of reproduction must be carefully coordinated through signal perception and coordination in the cell along with chromatin modification. Here,we investigated coordination of reproductive output by investigating the function of the histone chaper-one anti-silencing factor 1(ASF1)in a fungal species amenable to characterization of both asexual and sexual reproduction. We used knockout approach to show that SeASF1 influenced asexual and sexual reproduction in Stemphylium eturmiunum.SeASF1-deleted strains failed to produce pseudothecia, but produce abnormal conidia and showed an irregular distribution of nuclei in mycelium.Transcriptome sequencing was then used to identify genes with altered expression in the SeASF1-deleted strains. The transcriptional expression of the identified SeDJ-1 was strongly regulated by SeASF1.The interaction of SeDJ-1 and SeASF1 was confirmed using Y2H,Co-IP,and pull-down.Due to some components of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B(PI3K/AKT)signaling pathway were known to interact with DJ-1 in mammals,we verified SePI3K,an element of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in S.eturmiunum, was directly linked to SeDJ-1 and then these two proteins were defined as a coordinator of reproduction. However, knockout of SeDJ-1 or SePI3K altered the asexual and sexual repro-duction,but SePI3K recovered the asexual and sexual development of∆Sedj-1.The SeDJ-1-M6 segment of SeDJ-1 was essential for its interaction with SePI3K and played a critical role in restoring sexual reproduction in the∆Sepi3k,providing a deep understanding of the regulatory mechanism of SeDJ-1 in S.eturmiunum development.Summarily,SeASF1 is able to trigger SeDJ-1 and SeDJ-1can also activate SePI3K,which is orchestrally involved in asexual and sexual reproduction in S.eturmiunum.All these results reveal that SeASF1 manipulates asexual and sexual reproduction in S.eturmiunum by SeDJ-1 perception of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. These data highlight the deep similarities in coordinating asexual and sexual processes in both fungi and eukaryotes in general. | Shi Wang Xiaoman Liu Chenlin Xiong Susu Gao Wenmeng Xu Lili Zhao Chunyan Song Xiaoyong Liu Timothy Y.James Zhuang Li Xiuguo Zhang | 2023 | Fungal Diversity2023,,6: | 0
Viral metagenomics analysis of feces from coronary heart disease patients reveals the genetic diversity of the Microviridae显示文摘Recent studies have declared that members of the ss DNA virus family Microviridae play an important role in multiple environments, as they have been found taking a dominant position in the human gut. The aim of this study was to analyze the overall composition of the gut virome in coronary heart disease(CHD) patients, and try to discover the potential link between the human gut virome and CHD. Viral metagenomics methods were performed to detect the viral sequences in fecal samples collected from CHD inpatients and healthy persons as controls. We present the analysis of the virome composition in these CHD patients and controls. Our data shows that the virome composition may be linked to daily living habits and the medical therapy of CHD.Virgaviridae and Microviridae were the two dominant types of viruses found in the enteric virome of CHD patients. Fourteen divergent viruses belonging to the family Microviridae were found, twelve of which were grouped into the subfamily Gokushovirinae, while the remaining two strains might represent two new subfamilies within Microviridae, according to the phylogenetic analysis. In addition, the genomic organization of these viruses has been characterized. | Lianghua Guo Xiuguo Hua Wen Zhang Shixing Yang Quan Shen Haibing Hu Jingjiao Li Zhijian Liu Xiaochun Wang Hua Wang Chenglin Zhou Li Cui | 2017 | Virologica Sinica2017,32,2: | 0
Dynamic modulation performance of ferroelectric liquid crystal polarization rotators and Mueller matrix polarimeter optimization显示文摘A ferroelectric liquid crystal polarization rotator(FLCPR)has been widely used in polarization measurement due to its fast and stable modulation characteristics. The accurate characterization of the modulation performance of FLCPR directly affects the measurement accuracy of the instrument based on liquid crystal modulation. In this study,FLCPR is accurately characterized using a self-developed high-speed Stokes polarimeter.Strong linear and weak circular birefringence are observed during modulation processes, and all the optical parameters of FLCPR are dependent on driving voltage.A dual FLCPR-based Mueller matrix polarimeter is designed on the basis of the Stokes polarimeter. The designed polarimeter combines the advantages of the high modulation frequency of FLCPR and the ultrahigh temporal resolution of the fast polarization measurement system in the Stokes polarimeter. The optimal configuration of the designed polarizer is predicted in accordance with singular value decomposition.A simulated thickness measurement of a 24 nm standard SiO2 thin film is performed using the optimal configuration. Results show that the relative error in thickness measurement caused by using the unsatisfactory modulation characteristics of FLCPR reaches up to−4.34%.This finding demonstrates the importance of the accurate characterization of FLCPR in developing a Mueller matrix polarizer. | Song ZHANG Lelun WANG Anze YI Honggang GU Xiuguo CHEN Hao JIANG Shiyuan LIU | 2020 | Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering2020,15,2: | 0
