1Wavelet analysis of sunspot relative numbers显示文摘The time series of the monthly smoothed sun-spot numbers in 1749-2000 is analyzed with the wavelet. The result shows that besides the known time-variation of the period about 11 years, other main periods of the sunspot numbers, such as the periods of about 100 years and so on, vary with time. We suggest that the time-variation of the main periods is the manifestation of the complex variation of sunspot numbers. 2Multi-life cycles utilization of retired satellites显示文摘Retired geosynchronous (GEO) communication satellites affect the GEO orbit environment in outer space. According to the new concept of modern design, the authors propose creatively a method of reusing retired GEO communication satellites, through adjusting retired GEO satellites to slightly inclined orbit geosynchronous (SIGSO) satellites. After these retired satellites are applied to the navigation and communication system, integrity of navigation system and positioning accuracy of the system is improved. Meanwhile, some transponders on these retired satellites can be used to establish a new satellite communication service, and initiate the study and utilization of the multi-life cycle for retired satellites. 3Seasonal and inter-annual variations of length of day and polar motion observed by SLR in 1993―2006显示文摘A time series of length of the day (LOD) and polar motion (PM) were estimated from the range data measured by the satellite laser ranging technique (SLR) to LAGEOS 1/2 through 1993 to 2006. Com-pared with EOPC04 released by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS),the root mean squares errors for LOD,X and Y of PM are 0.0067 milliseconds (ms),0.18 milli-arc-sec-onds (mas) and 0.20 mas,respectively. Then the time series are analyzed with the wavelet transforma-tion and least squares method. Wavelet analysis shows that there are the obvious seasonal and inter-annual variations of LOD and PM,but the annual variation cannot be distinguished from the Chandler variation because these two frequencies are very close. The trends and periodic variations of LOD and PM are given in the least squares sense. LOD changes with the annual and semiannual periods. The annual and Chandler variations for PM are also detected,but the semiannual motion for PM is not found. The trend rate of the LOD change in 1993―2006 is ?0.18 ms per year,and the difference from the well-known 1.7 ms per century showed that the trend rate is diverse in different periods possibly. The trend rates of PM in the X and Y directions are 2.25 and 1.67 mas per year respectively,and the North Pole moves to 36.5°E relative to the crust,which is different from the direction of Greenland.GUO JinYun HAN YanBen 2009Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,1:9
4Long-term variations of solar activity显示文摘Using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram we analyzed two sunspot series: the one over the past 11000 years at the 10-year interval based upon the survey data of 14C concentration in tree-rings, recon- structed by Solanki et al.; and the sunspot number over the past 7000 years, derived from geomagnetic variations by Usoskin et al. We found the periods and quasi-periods in solar activity, such as about 225, 352, 441, 522 and 561 a, and near 1000 and 2000 a. An approach of wavelet transform was applied to check the two sunspot time series, with emphasis on investigating time-varying characteristics in the long-term fluctuations of solar activity. 6Functions of retired GEO communication satellites in improving the PDOP value of CAPS显示文摘This paper briefly introduces the maneuverable feature of the slightly inclined geosynchronous orbit (SIGSO) satellites under a new control model degraded from the geosynchronous orbit (GEO) communication satellites which will retire as most of the fuel in these satellites has been consumed. Basing on the transmitting Chinese Area Positioning System (CAPS), the authors, by analyses, indicate that such satellites can make an improvement to CAPS constellation configuration, especially to the PDOP value from simulation. The results show that the use of SIGSO satellites can (1) actualize three-dimensional (3D) navigation and positioning compared with the situation, which, only using GEO satellites, cannot be carried out, and improve navigation and positioning accuracy to some extent; (2) reuse the communication services of these satellites for more years, and GEO communication satellites will be retired at a later time and delay their time to become space debris and reduce their pollution of the space environment, so that valuable space resources are maximally used. 7Selection of satellite constellation framework of CAPS显示文摘Based on the idea of transmitting the satellite navigation and positioning system, taking the distribution and variation of the Position Dilution of Precision factor (PDOP), which is closely related with the precision of navigation and positioning, within the China area as the primary criterion, we analyze and discuss the tentative plan of constellation configuration consisting of geosynchronous orbit (GEO) communication satellites and inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO) satellites for the transmitting Chinese Area Positioning System (CAPS). We emphatically consider the effect on the PDOP by the three major orbit parameters including the inclination, eccentricity and right ascension of the ascend- ing node (RAAN) of IGSO satellites, to research the strategies of the constellation configuration of CAPS through software emulation. Various constellation configurations are analyzed and compared and the results show that the constellation configuration, consisting of three IGSO communication satellites in three orbits with the same inclination as 50°, the difference in RAAN as 120° and the same '8' shaped ground track centered near 115°E and four or five GEO communication satellites within 60°E to 150°E, can satisfy the requirement that Chinese domain is availably covered and the navigation and positioning with high precision could be obtained. 8Possible triggering of solar activity to big earthquakes (Ms ≥ 8) in faults with near west-east strike in China显示文摘This paper studies the relationship between solar activity and big earthquakes (Ms≥8) that occurred in China and western Mongolia. It is discovered that the occurrence dates of most of the big earthquakes in and near faults with west-east strike are close to the maximum years of sunspot numbers, whereas dates of some big earthquakes which are not in such faults are not close to the maximum years. We consider that it is possibly because of the appearance of many magnetic storms in the maximum years of solar activity. The magnetic storms result in anomalies of geomagnetic field and then produce eddy current in the faults gestating earthquake with near west-east strike. 9Digital zenith telescope prototype of China显示文摘Classical optical astronomy measures the direction of the local plumb line on the stellar background,and is influenced by variations of the earth gravity field.Therefore,classical optical astrometry can be used to measure and study variations of plumb line.This endows classical optical astrometric technologies special significance for the interdisciplinary researches of astronomy and geoscience,and makes them irreplaceable by technologies like very long baseline interferometry,satellite laser ranging.However,classical astrometric instruments have a major drawback of low efficiency,such as the low automaticity,more operating observers,and even operative error which makes it very difficult to reduce the random observation error in some visual instruments.To overcome this drawback,we have successfully developed the digital zenith telescope prototype(DZT-1)with the aperture of200 mm,using charge coupled device and other advanced technologies and new equipments.As proved by test observations,DZT-1 can observe thousands of stars over one night,which significantly reduces the random observation error and increases the observation accuracy.In addition,DZT-1 has a high degree of automation,even allowing unattended observation by remote control.Besides,DZT-1 has a small-size and is easy to move,making it convenient for mobile measurement of the deflection of the vertical.In summary,DZT can be widely used in the geoscience and astronomy fields.Lili Tian Jinyun Guo Yanben Han Xiushan Lu Weidong Liu Zheng Wang Bo Wang Zhiqiang Yin Hongqi Wang 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,17:4
10Inter-annual variation of the earth rotation and El Nio显示文摘The relationship between the inter-annual variations of the earth rotation, atmospheric angular momentum (AAM), sunspot number and El Ni(?)o is analyzed. The result shows that the inter-annual variation of the earth rotation responds to the variation of AAM and the preg-nancy of El Ni(?)o timely. Generally, the inter-annual compo-nent of the earth rotation will reach zero in a changing proc-ess that increases from the negative to the positive extreme before El Ni(?)o occurs about half year or more. And the solar activity may have certain influence on the appearance of El Ni(?)o. 11Progress of research on anomalies of astronomical time and latitude observations before earthquake显示文摘This paper introduces the discovery of the phenomenon that short-term anomalous fluctuations appeared in residuals of astronomical time and latitude observations before earthquakes and the progress of related researches carried out for many years.The relations between the anomalous variations of time and latitude residuals of astronomical time and latitude instruments in different regions and the earthquakes around these instruments as well as the characteristics of residuals' anomalous variations are analyzed.The significance of the anomalous fluctuations in residuals of astronomical time and latitude caused by the anomalous variations of the local plumb line before earthquake and detecting the vertical variation with astronomical time and latitude observations as well as the importance of carrying out further researches are discoursed.The possibility that the phenomenon will become an effective short-term earthquakes precursor,the current situations and the problems to be solved,are discussed.Also we offer the proposals to develop new roboticized astrometric instruments with high-precision and set up test observation networks in earthquake-prone areas in order to do research in-depth,optimize methods of observing and extracting anomalous information for short-term earthquake prediction,and so on.WANG Bo YIN ZhiQiang HAN YanBen 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,27:4
12Records of solar eclipse observations in ancient China显示文摘Like ancient people at other places of the world, the ancient Chinese lived in awe of the Sun. As they felt solar eclipses extremely significant events, they closely observed the occurrence of solar eclipse. Ancient astronomers further realized very early that solar eclipses were one of the important astronomical phenomena to revise and improve the ancient calendar. Interestingly, ancient emperors regarded solar eclipses as warnings from heaven that might affect the stability of their throne. Consequently, observing and recording solar eclipses became official, which dated far back to ancient China when numerous relevant descriptions were recorded in historical books. These records contribute substantially to China as an ancient civilization, as well as to the research of the long-term variation of the rotation rate of the Earth during >2000 years before the 17th century. 13Successful operation of a cooperative SLR station of China and Argentina in San Juan显示文摘We introduced the observations and researches using a Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) system with high precision, which was designed and made in China and installed in the Observatory of San Juan Uni- versity, Argentina, the capability of the system and the achievement of the cooperative procedure be- tween China and Argentina. The SLR station in San Juan, set up by China and Argentina, is quite sig- nificant for improving the distribution of SLR stations and enhancing the orbital coverage of the whole earth. Since the SLR system started to work in the Observatory of San Juan University in the beginning of 2006, the operation is rather good, and rich data with high precision have been obtained. 14Sun's total irradiance reconstruction based on multiple solar indices显示文摘In order to uncover a possible influence on the Earth's climate, we need a much longer time series, i.e., the total solar irradiance (TSI) which is also an interesting issue in its own right in solar physics. By comparing different solar indices associated with TSI during the period 1979 to 2009, several empirical models in the TSI are presented. We verify that the reconstruction model based on the three variables: sunspot number, sunspot area, and solar 10.7 cm radio flux, is the best one. As demonstrated by model calculations, the history of TSI was reconstructed back to 1947 based on 3-indices and to 1874 based on 2-indices, respectively. The reason that the reduced irradiance on the trough during 2006 to 2009 lasts long may be due to the about 85-year cycle of solar activity, which modulates the intensity of the 11-year cycle (Schwabe cycles), possesses a considerable potential to produce an effective reducing, and holds on a steadily lower level of irradiance.ZHAO Juan HAN YanBen 2012Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2012,55,1:2
15Image and data processing of digital zenith telescope(DZT-1) of China显示文摘The first digital zenith telescope prototype(DZT-1)of China was successfully developed by National Astronomical Observatories,Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shandong University of Science and Technology at the end of 2011.Compared with classical astrometric telescopes,DZT-1 has features of small size,high automation,and high accuracy.It can be used to do classical astrometric observations as well as measurement of plumb line variation and deflection of the vertical.So DZT-1 plays a significant role in astronomy and geoscience.Although the measurement principle and method of DZT-1 are somewhat similar to classical photographic zenith tube,there are still many differences.The present paper introduces the principle,method,and procedure for processing DZT-1 star image and data,as well as the application software for astronomical latitude and longitude calculation using DZT-1 observations.The test observations and the observation results are also presented.According to the test observation results,the standard deviation of single observation is about 0.200–0.300,and 0.0700–0.0800in term of a group observations.In conclusion,the data processing software fulfills DZT-1’s demand for data processing,guaranteeing the automation and high accuracy for DZT-1.Bo Wang Lili Tian Zheng Wang Zhiqiang Yin Weidong Liu Qiyuan Qiao Hongqi Wang Yanben Han 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,17:2
16South American SLR stations monitoring ground displacement caused by the M8.8 Chilean earthquake of 2010显示文摘The M8.8 Chilean earthquake of February 27,2010 caused a large surface displacement near its epicenter.Satellite Laser Ranging(SLR) station 7405,cooperatively operated by Germany and Chile about 130 km from the epicenter was affected by the earthquake.Another SLR station,No.7406,operated jointly by the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and San Juan University of Argentina,was about 600 km from the epicenter.Combining the observations of these two SLR stations with global SLR station observations,we calculate the geocentric coordinates of the two stations based on ITRF2000.The results show that the coordinates of the two stations have changed by varying degrees.SLR-7405 moved substantially towards the southwest with displacements of about 3.11,0.52 and 0.49 m in X,Y,Z directions;the corresponding displacements for SLR-7406 are about 0.02,0.03 and 0.02 m.This solution,as an independent result derived from SLR observations,could provide an essential external check for other positioning techniques such as GPS.YIN ZhiQiang HAN YanBen PODESTA Ricardo LIU WeiDong PACHECO Ana ALONSO Ester ACTIS Eloy HUANG DongPing ZHAO LiMin WANG Rui XIA JinChao 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,8:1

19Revisit of short-term periodicities in solar mean magnetic field显示文摘Short-term variations of the solar mean magnetic field(SMMF) were investigated through re-analyzing the data from the Wilcox Solar Observatory during the last four solar activity cycles using continuous wavelet transforms.We demonstrated the time-variable characters of short-term periods of SMMF. Our results indicate that the SMMF has main periods of about 27 and 13.5 days not only in the minimum and maximum years of each activity cycle, but also in the increase and decrease of the solar cycle. The result is partly different from the conclusion that the SMMF has dominant period of about 27 days during the solar maxima and about 13.5 days during the solar minimum years(Ye et al. in Solar Phys 279:411–418, 2012).
