| 1 | Dual Functions of Microglia in Ischemic Stroke显示文摘Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Resident microglia are the principal immune cells of the brain, and the first to respond to the pathophysiological changes induced by ischemic stroke. Traditionally, it has been thought that microglial activation is deleterious in ischemic stroke, and therapies to suppress it have been intensively explored. However,increasing evidence suggests that microglial activation is also critical for neurogenesis, angiogenesis, and synaptic remodeling, thereby promoting functional recovery after cerebral ischemia. Here, we comprehensively review the dual role of microglia during the different phases of ischemic stroke, and the possible mechanisms controlling the post-ischemic activity of microglia. | 2 | REE geochemistry of suspended sediments from the rivers around the Yellow Sea and provenance indicators显示文摘Rare earth element (REE) compositions of the suspended sediments from the rivers around the Yellow Sea were different in that Korean river sediments (Han, Keum and Yeongsan Rivers) yield stronger fractionations than Chinese river sediments (Changjiang, Huanghe and Yalujiang), shown by obvious enrichments of LREE (light rare earth element) relative to UCC (upper continental crust). Variations of source rock compositions in the drainage basins are responsible for the differences of REE compositions between the river sediments. | 3 | RHEOCASTING OF A356 ALLOY BY LOW SUPERHEAT POURING WITH A SHEARING FIELD显示文摘A novel semi-solid slurry-making process was developed, which was a controlled nucleation and growth technique using a specially designed rotational barrel. Experimental study was undertaken to investigate the effects of pouring temperature and rotation speed of barrel on the microstructure of A356 alloy. Localized rapid cooling, combined with vigorous mixing during the initial stage of solidification enhanced wall nucleation and nuclei survival. High nuclei density combined with a much gradual cooling afterwards led to the formation of the near-ideal semi-solid slurry under a large processing window for the pouring temperature. | 4 | Analysis of ground vibrations due to underground trains by 2.5D finite/infinite element approach显示文摘The 2.5D finite/infinite element approach is adopted to study wave propagation problems caused by underground moving trains.The irregularities of the near field, including the tunnel structure and parts of the soil, are modeled by the finite elements, and the wave propagation properties of the far field extending to infinity are modeled by the infinite elements.One particular feature of the 2.5D approach is that it enables the computation of the three-dimensional response of the half-space, taking into account the load-moving effect, using only a two-dimensional profile.Although the 2.5D finite/infinite element approach shows a great advantage in studying the wave propagation caused by moving trains, attention should be given to the calculation aspects, such as the rules for mesh establishment, in order to avoid producing inaccurate or erroneous results.In this paper, some essential points for consideration in analysis are highlighted, along with techniques to enhance the speed of the calculations.All these observations should prove useful in making the 2.5D finite/infinite element approach an effective one. | Hsiao-Hui Hung Y. Versican, like other members of its family, has unique N- and C-terminal globular regions,each with multiple motifs. A large glycosaminoglycan-binding region lies between them. This review will begin byoutlining these structures, in the context of ECM proteoglycans. The diverse binding partners afforded to versican byvirtue of its modular design will then be examined. These include ECM components, such as hyaluronan, type Icollagen, tenascin-R, fibulin-1, and -2, fibrillin-1, fibronectin, P- and L-selectins, and chemokines. | 8 | Evaluating the Effect of Tillage on Carbon Sequestration Using the Minimum Detectable Difference Concept显示文摘Three long-term field trials in humid regions of Canada and the USA were used to evaluate the influence of soil depth and sample numbers on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in no-tillage (NT) and moldboard plow (MP) corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) production systems. The first trial was conducted on a Maryhill silt loam (Typic Hapludalf) at Elora, Ontario, Canada, the second on a Brookston clay loam (Typic Argiaquoll) at Woodslee, Ontario, Canada, and the third on a Thorp silt loam (Argiaquic Argialboll) at Urbana, Illinois, USA. No-tillage led to significantly higher SOC concentrations in the top 5 cm compared to MP at all 3 sites. However, NT resulted in significantly lower SOC in sub-surface soils as compared to MP at Woodslee (10-20 cm, P = 0.01) and Urbana (20-30 cm, P < 0.10). No-tillage had significantly more SOC storage than MP at the Elora site (3.3 Mg C ha-1) and at the Woodslee site (6.2 Mg C ha-1) on an equivalent mass basis (1350 Mg ha-1 soil equivalent mass). Similarly, NT had greater SOC storage than MP at the Urbana site (2.7 Mg C ha-1) on an equivalent mass basis of 675 Mg ha-1 soil. However, these differences disappeared when the entire plow layer was evaluated for both the Woodslee and Urbana sites as a result of the higher SOC concentrations in MP than in NT at depth. Using the minimum detectable difference technique, we observed that up to 1500 soil sample per tillage treatment comparison will have to be collected and analyzed for the Elora and Woodslee sites and over 40 soil samples per tillage treatment comparison for the Urbana to statistically separate significant differences in the SOC contents of sub-plow depth soils. | 13 | Catalysis of Dissolved and Adsorbed Iron in Soil Suspension for Chromium(VI) Reduction by Sulfide显示文摘The kinetics of Cr(VI) reduction by sulfide in soil suspensions with various pHs, soil compositions, and Fe(II) concentrations was examined using batch anaerobic experimental systems at constant temperature. The results showed that the reaction rate of Cr(VI) reduction was in the order of red soil < yellow-brown soil < chernozem and was proportional to the concentration of HCl-extractable iron in the soils. Dissolved and adsorbed iron in soil suspensions played an important role in accelerating Cr(VI) reduction. The reaction involved in the Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II) to produce Fe(III), which was reduced to Fe(II) again by sulfide, could represent the catalytic pathway until about 70% of the initially present Cr(VI) was reduced. The catalysis occurred because the one-step reduction of Cr(VI) by sulfide was slower than the two-step process consisting of rapid Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II) followed by Fe(III) reduction by sulfide. In essence, Fe(II)/Fe(III) species shuttle electrons from sulfide to Cr(VI), facilitating the reaction. The effect of iron, however, could be completely blocked by adding a strong Fe(II)-complexing ligand, 1,10-phenanthroline, to the soil suspensions. In all the experiments, initial sulfide concentration was much higher than initial Cr(VI) concentration. The plots of lnc[Cr(VI)] versus reaction time were linear up to approximately 70% of Cr(VI) reduction, suggesting a first-order reaction kinetics with respect to Cr(VI). | 15 | Latest Wuchiapingian to Earliest Triassic Conodont Zones and δ13 Ccarb Isotope Excursions from Deep-Water Sections in Western Hubei Province, South China显示文摘Deep-water facies sections have advantages of recording complete information across the Permian-Triassic boundary(PTB). Here we present a detailed study on the conodont biostratigraphy and carbon isotope profile ranges from the Wuchiapingian-Changhsingian boundary(WCB) to the PTB of two deep-water facies sections at Zhuqiao and Shiligou in the Middle Yangtze region, western Hubei, South China. Fifteen species and three genera are identified. Eight conodont zones are recognized which in ascending order are the Clarkina orientalis, C. wangi, C. subcarinata, C. changxingensis, C. yini, C. meishanensis, Hindeodus parvus and Isarcicella isarcica zones. The onset of deposition of the deep-water siliceous strata of Dalong Formation in western Hubei began in the Late Wuchiapingian and persisted to the Late Changhsingian. Carbon isotope negative excursions occur near both the WCB and PTB in both sections. The WCB δ13 Ccarb negative excursion is in the C. orientalis and C. wangi zones. The PTB δ13 Ccarb negative excursion began in the C. yini Zone and extended to the I. isarcica Zone. | 16 | The Characterization of Sputtered Zr-Ge-N Thin Films as Diffusion Barriers Between Copper and Silicon显示文摘The main purpose of the present micro-structural analysis by transmission electron microscopy(TEM)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)was to investigate whether amorphous Zr-Ge-N films are a potential candidate as a diffusion barrier for Cu wiring used in Si devices.The Zr-Ge-N films were prepared by a radio frequency(RF)reactive magnetron sputter-deposition technique using N2 and Ar mixed gas,and the film structure was found to be sensitive to the gas flow ratio of N2 vs.Ar during sputtering.Polycrystalline Zr-Ge-N films were obtained when the N2/(Ar+N2)ratio was smaller than 0.2 and amorphous-like Zr-Ge-N films were obtained when the ratio was larger than 0.3.Diffusion barrier test was performed by annealing the Cu/Zr-Ge-N/Si film stack under Ar atmosphere.The deposited Zr-Ge-N(C)films remained amorphous even after high temperature annealing.The Cu diffusion profile in the film was assessed by the Auger electron spectroscopy(AES).The results indicate that Cu diffusion was minimal in amorphous Zr-Ge-N(C)films even at high annealing temperatures of 800℃. | Yang, J. Generally, N : P in the Changjiang Estuary waters is 2 times higher than Redfield ratio. The bioassay experiments with high N : P water samples collected from Changjiang Estuary show that phytoplankton production is limited by P. | 20 | A Bayesian Network Approach for Offshore Risk Analysis Through Linguistic Variables显示文摘This paper presents a new approach for offshore risk analysis that is capable of dealing with linguistic probabilities in Bayesian networks(BNs).In this paper,linguistic probabilities are used to describe occurrence likelihood of hazardous events that may cause possible accidents in offshore operations.In order to use fuzzy information,an f-weighted valuation function is proposed to transform linguistic judgements into crisp probability distributions which can be easily put into a BN to model causal relationships among risk factors.The use of linguistic variables makes it easier for human experts to express their knowledge,and the transformation of linguistic judgements into crisp probabilities can significantly save the cost of computation,modifying and maintaining a BN model.The flexibility of the method allows for multiple forms of information to be used to quantify model relationships,including formally assessed expert opinion when quantitative data are lacking,or when only qualitative or vague statements can be made.The model is a modular representation of uncertain knowledge caused due to randomness,vagueness and ignorance.This makes the risk analysis of offshore engineering systems more functional and easier in many assessment contexts.Specifically,the proposed f-weighted valuation function takes into account not only the dominating values,but also the α-level values that are ignored by conventional valuation methods.A case study of the collision risk between a Floating Production,Storage and Off-loading(FPSO) unit and the authorised vessels due to human elements during operation is used to illustrate the application of the proposed model. | Ren J.
