| 1 | Antimicrobial activities of the rhizome extract of Zingiber zerumbet Linn显示文摘Objective:To investigate antimicrobial effects of ethanolic extract of Zingiber zerumbet(Z.zerumbet)(L.)Smith and its chloroform and petroleum ether soluble fractions against pathogenic bacteria and fungi.Methods:The fresh rhizomes of Zingiber zerumbet were extracted in cold with ethanol(4.0 L)after concentration.The crude ethanol extract was fractionated by petroleum ether and chloroform to form a suspension of ethanol extract(15.0 g),petroleum ether fraction(6.6 g)and chloroform soluble fraction(5.0 g).The crude ethanol extract and its petroleum ether and chloroform fractions were evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activity against thirteen pathogenic bacteria and three fungi by the disc diffusion method.Commercially available kanamycin(30μg/disc)was used as standard disc and blank discs impregnated with the respective solvents were used as negative control.Results:At a concentration of 400μg/disc,all the samples showed mild to moderate antibacterial and antifungal activity and produced the zone of inhibition ranging from 6 mm to 10 mm.Among the tested samples,the crude ethanol extract showed the highest activity against Vibrio parahemolyticus(V.parahemolyticus).The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)of the crude ethanol extract and its fractions were within the value of 128-256μg/mL against two Gram positive and four Gram negative bacteria and all the samples showed the lowest MIC value against V.parahemolyticus(128μg/mL).Conclusions:It can be concluded that,potent antibacterial and antifungal phytochemicals are present in ethanol extract of Z.zerumbet(L.). | Golam Kader Farjana Nikkon Mohammad Abdur Rashid Tanzima Yeasmin | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,5: | 4 |
| 2 | A study of groundwater irrigation water quality in south-central Bangladesh: a geo-statistical model approach using GIS and multivariate statistics显示文摘Southern Bangladesh's irrigation and drinking water is threatened by saline intrusion. This study aimed to establish an irrigation water quality index(IWQI) using a geostatistical model and multivariate indices in Gopalgan district, south-central Bangladesh. Groundwater samples were taken randomly(different depths) in two seasons(wet-monsoon and dry-monsoon). Hydrochemical analysis revealed groundwater in this area was neutral to slightly alkaline and dominating cations were Na^+, Mg^(2+), and Ca^(2+) along with major anions Cl-and HCO^(3-). Principa component analysis and Gibbs plot helped explain possible geochemical processes in the aquifer. The irrigation wate evaluation indices showed: electrical conductivity(EC)[750 l S/cm, moderate to extreme saline; sodium adsorption ratio(SAR), excellent to doubtful; total hard ness(TH), moderate to very hard; residual sodium bicar bonate, safe to marginal; Kelly's ratio [1; soluble sodiumpercentage(SSP), fair to poor; magnesium adsorption ratio,harmful for soil; and IWQI, moderate to suitable. In addition, the best fitted semivariogram for IWQI, EC, SAR,SSP, and TH confirmed that most parameters had strong spatial dependence and others had moderate to weak spatial dependence. This variation might be due to the different origin/sources of major contributing ions along with the influence of variable river flow and small anthropogenic contributions. Furthermore, the spatial distribution maps for IWQI, EC, SSP, and TH during both seasons confirmed the influence of salinity from the sea; low-flow in the major river system was the driving factor of overall groundwater quality in the study area. | 6 | Potentiality of Different Seed Priming Agents to Mitigate Cold Stress of Winter Rice Seedling显示文摘Seed priming has proved to be an effective pre-germination seed invigoration technique for different crops to improve seed and seedling performance under different abiotic stresses.In Bangladesh,winter rice is very often exposed to cold waves just after sowing in the nursery bed resulting in poor seed germination and seedling emergence,yellowish and thin seedlings production,and a very low survival rate.Seed priming may mitigate the cold stress during seed germination and seedling emergence and helps in the quality seedling production of winter rice.To evaluate the efficacy of different seed priming techniques in increasing seedling emergence,growth,vigor and survivability of winter rice cultivars under cold stress,a pot experiment was conducted at the Department of Agronomy,Bangladesh Agricultural University during December 2018 to January 2019.The experiment comprised two factors,(A)Winter rice variety namely,(i)BRRI dhan29 and (ii)BRRI dhan36;(B)Seed priming agent namely (i)Control(no priming),(ii)20000 ppm NaCl,(iii)30000 ppm NaCl,(iv)20000 ppm KCl,(v)30000 ppm KCl,(vi)20000 ppm CaCl2,(vii)30000 ppm CaCl2,(viii)50 ppm CuSO4,(ix)75 ppm CuSO_(4),(x)10000 ppm ZnSO4,(xi)15000 ppm ZnSO4,(xii)2 ppm Na2MoO4,(xiii)3 ppm Na2MoO4,(xiv)100 ppm PEG(Polyethylene glycol 4000)and (xv)150 ppm PEG.Seeds were sown on two different dates viz.,1st December and 1st January so that seedlings are exposed to cold stress at different stages.The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design(CRD)with three replications.Results indicated that(in most of the cases)seed priming has a positive impact on seedling emergence rate(%),root length,shoot length,root shoot ratio,root dry weight,shoot dry weight,seedling dry weight and survival rate(%).Among the priming agents,KCl and CaCl2 performed best;while priming with NaCl and PEG showed no advantages over no priming for both the sowing dates.In general,BRRI dhan36 performed better than BRRI dhan29 in terms of seedling growth because of its higher tolerance to cold stress.But,both the varieties performed similarly in terms of emergence rate and survival rate.Thus,priming is an effective tool to increase seed germination,better seedling growth,and higher seedling survivability of winter rice under cold stress,and KCl(20000 ppm)or CaCl2(20000 ppm)can be considered as a viable priming agent. | Md.Parvez Anwar Md.Ariful Islam Khalid A.K.M.Mominul Islam Sabina Yeasmin Sharif Ahmed Adel Hadifa Ismail A.Ismail Akbar Hossain Ayman EL Sabagh | 2021 | Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2021,90,5: | 1 |

| 11 | Paired δ^13Ccarb-δ^13Corg Evolution of the Dengying Formation from Northeastern Guizhou and Implications for Stratigraphic Correlation and the Late Ediacaran Carbon Cycle显示文摘This study provides δ^13C profiles from a lower-slope(Well ZK102)to basin(Bahuang Section)environment to better understand the temporal and spatial variability in δ^13Ccarb-δ^13Corg of the Yangtze Block during the Late Ediacaran.Our new δ^13C profiles together with the reported data suggest that the Upper Ediacaran successions from different depositional environments are generally bounded by negative δ^13Ccarb and/or δ^13Corg excursions in the underlying and overlying strata.Moreover,the Upper Ediacaran δ^13Ccarb profiles generally can be subdivided into two positive excursions and an interjacent negative excursion,whereas the paired δ^13Corg profiles from different depositional environments have individual variation trends.On the other hand,these data show a large surface-to-deep waterδ^13C gradient(~5‰variation in δ^13Ccarb,>10‰variation in δ^13Corg)which can be reasonably explained by the heterogeneity of the biological activities in the redox-stratified water column.Furthermore,the decoupled δ^13Ccarb-δ^13Corg pattern with large δ^13Corg perturbations at the lower slope precluded the existence of a large dissolved organic carbon reservoir at the Yangtze Block during the Late Ediacaran.Thus,the high δ^13Ccarb values in the Upper Ediacaran succession could be balanced by large amounts of buried organic carbon likely associated with high productivity. | Yi Ding Daizhao Chen Xiqiang Zhou Taiyu Huang Chuan Guo Rumana Yeasmin | 2020 | Journal of Earth Science2020,31,2: | 1 |

| 13 | Preventive effect of ethanol extract of Alpinia calcarata Rosc on Ehrlich's ascitic carcinoma cell induced malignant ascites in mice显示文摘Objective:To explore cytotoxic activity of ethanol extract of Alpinia calcarata Rose(EEAC) rhizome against Ehiiich ascites carcinoma(EAC) tumor bearing Swiss Albino mice.Methods: In the present study,its anti-neoplastic activity has been studied by monitoring parameters like tumor weight measurement,survival time,tumor cell growth inhibition,haematological characteristics etc.Results:It was found that EEAC at dose 8 mg/kg/day(i.p.) significantly decreased tumor weight(62.0%;P<0.01),increased life span(70.25%;P <0.01) and reduced tumor cell growth rate(85.7%;P<0.01) in comparison to those of EAC bearing mice.The plant extract also improved the depleted haematological parameters like RBC WBC,Hb%,differential counts(e.g.lymphocytes,neutrophils,monocytes etc) of EAC bearing mice towards normal.The host toxic effects were not very high and recovered gradually towards normal within a few days after treatment.ConchiskHis:EEAC exhibits potent in vivo cytotoxic activity against EAC tumor bearing Swiss Albino mice.So,the plant can be considered as a probable new source of antitumor agents. | Rasida Perveen Farhadul Islam Jahanara Khanum Tanzima Yeasmin | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,2: | 1 |
| 14 | 拉杰沙希大学校园药用植物菌根研究(英文)显示文摘Forty different medicinal plants were investigated for arbuscular mycorrhizal association in the Rajshahi University Campus in Bangladesh. The results indicated that 35 different plants were infected by AM (arbuscular mycorrhizal) fungi as found by trypan blue staining procedure. The percentage of root colonization by AM fungi varied from 13.3% to 100%. Mangifera indica and Morus indica have maximum percentage of colonization (100%). The intensity of root colonization were abundant in the plants belonging to the families Anacardiaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Moraceae, Leguminosae and Apocynaceae whereas the intensity of colonization of crop roots were moderate and poor belonging to Gramineae and Leguminosae. The presence of greater number of spore in soil was always associated with the incidence of abundant mycelia. In plant roots the formation of spore and mycelia was restricted by low pH. Number of mycorrhizal fungus spores ranged between 35 to100 per 100g air dried soil in different family respective soils. The frequency of mycorrhizal fungus infection showed positive correlation with soil pH, moisture, water holding capacity, texture, total nitrogen, organic carbon, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, and magnesium.
