1Cropland redistribution to marginal lands undermines environmental sustainability显示文摘Cropland redistribution to marginal land has been reported worldwide;however,the resulting impacts on environmental sustainability have not been investigated sufficiently.Here we investigated the environmental impacts of cropland redistribution in China.As a result of urbanization-induced loss of high-quality croplands in south China(~8.5 t ha^(-1)),croplands expanded to marginal lands in northeast(~4.5 t ha^(-1)) and northwest China(~2.9 t ha^(-1)) during 1990-2015 to pursue food security.However,the reclamation in these low-yield and ecologically vulnerable zones considerably undermined local environmental sustainability,for example increasing wind erosion(+3.47%),irrigation water consumption(+34.42%),fertilizer use(+20.02%) and decreasing natural habitats(-3.11%).Forecasts show that further reclamation in marginal lands per current policies would exacerbate environmental costs by 2050.The future cropland security risk will be remarkably intensified because of the conflict between food production and environmental sustainability.Our research suggests that globally emerging reclamation of marginal lands should be restricted and crop yield boost should be encouraged for both food security and environmental benefits.Wenhui Kuang Jiyuan Liu Hanqin Tian Hao Shi Jinwei Dong Changqing Song Xiaoyong Li Guoming Du Yali Hou Dengsheng Lu Wenfeng Chi Tao Pan Shuwen Zhang Rafiq Hamdi Zherui Yin Huimin Yan Changzhen Yan Shixin Wu Rendong Li Jiuchun Yang Yinyin Dou Wenbin Wu Liqiao Liang Bao Xiang Shiqi Yang 2022National Science Review2022,9,1:13
2Rapid Urban Land Expansion in Earthquake-Prone Areas of China显示文摘A timely understanding of urban expansion in earthquake-prone areas is crucial for earthquake risk assessment and urban planning for earthquake mitigation.However, a comprehensive evaluation of urban expansion in earthquake-prone areas is lacking in China, especially in the context of rapid urbanization. Based on time series urban land data and seismic ground-motion parameter zonation maps, this study analyzed urban expansion in the most seismically hazardous areas(MSHAs) of China from1992 to 2015 on the national, regional, and city scales. The results show that urban land area in the MSHAs expanded by 6767 km^2 from 1992 to 2015, with a gain of 350%.Specifically, the increase in urban land area of small cities in the MSHAs of western China during this period was the fastest, 6.24 times greater than that at the national level. In terms of spatial patterns, the urban land patches in the MSHAs in 2015 were more fragmented than those in 1992 on all scales. The percentage of change in the number of patches and the landscape shape index of the urban land patches of small cities in the MSHAs of western China were the highest across all cities. Therefore, we believe that special attention should be paid to the cities in the MSHAs that exhibit the most rapid increases in both urban land area and fragmentation, especially the small cities in western China. 3A Global Analysis of the Relationship Between Urbanization and Fatalities in Earthquake-Prone Areas显示文摘Urbanization can be a challenge and an opportunity for earthquake risk mitigation.However,little is known about the changes in exposure(for example,population and urban land)to earthquakes in the context of global urbanization,and their impacts on fatalities in earthquake-prone areas.We present a global analysis of the changes in population size and urban land area in earthquake-prone areas from 1990 to 2015,and their impacts on earthquake-related fatalities.We found that more than two thirds of population growth(or 70%of total population in 2015)and nearly three quarters of earthquake-related deaths(or 307,918 deaths)in global earthquake-prone areas occurred in developing countries with an urbanization ratio(percentage of urban population to total population)between 20 and 60%.Holding other factors constant,population size was significantly and positively associated with earthquake fatalities,while the area of urban land was negatively related.The results suggest that fatalities increase for areas where the urbanization ratio is low,but after a ratio between 40 and 50%occurs,earthquake fatalities decline.This finding suggests that the resistance of building and infrastructure is greater in countries with higher urbanization ratios and highlights the need for further investigation.Our quantitative analysis is extended into the future using Shared Socioeconomic Pathways to reveal that by 2050,more than 50%of the population increase in global earthquake-prone areas will take place in a few developing countries(Pakistan,India,Afghanistan,and Bangladesh)that are particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.To reduce earthquake-induced fatalities,enhanced resilience of buildings and urban infrastructure generally in these few countries should be a priority.Chunyang He Qingxu Huang Xuemei Bai Derek TRobinson Peijun Shi Yinyin Dou Bo Zhao Jubo Yan Qiang Zhang Fangjin Xu James Daniell 2021International Journal of Disaster Risk Science2021,12,6:1
4The Massive Expansion and Spatial Transformation of Potentially Contaminated Land Across China in 1990–2020 Observed from Remote Sensing and Big-data显示文摘Identifying and monitoring the spatiotemporal patterns of potentially contaminated land(PCL) in China is a key concern of ecological governance. However, the dynamics of PCL’s expansion remain unclear nationwide. Integrating high-resolution remote sensing images, a land-use/cover change database, crawler data from websites, and other multisource data, we produced a new dataset of China’s PCL in 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 using data fusion technology. Then we analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of China’s PCL from 1990 to 2020. Our study shows that the acquired vector dataset of China’s PCL is of high quality and reliability, with an overall accuracy of 93.21%. The area of China’s PCL has kept growing for the past 30 years, and the growth rate was especially rapid during2000–2010, 2.32 and 6.13 times as rapid as that during 1990–2000 and 2010–2020, respectively. PCL has also been trending toward higher aggregation over markedly enlarged areas and has transferred progressively from north and southeast of China to northwest and southwest of China and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The patterns of China’s PCL have been driven by the joint factors of policies, mineral resources, economy, and others, among which policies and the economy have contributed more prominently to the long-term transition.Our study promotes the access to high-quality spatial data of PCL to facilitate environmental governance of mine wastes, pollution and land management.DOU Yinyin GUO Changqing KUANG Wenhui CHI Wenfeng LEI Mei 2022Chinese Geographical Science2022,32,5:0
