Frequency control of future power systems: reviewing and evaluating challenges and new control methods显示文摘Integration of more renewable energy resources introduces a challenge in frequency control of future power systems. This paper reviews and evaluates the possible challenges and the new control methods of frequency in future power systems.Different types of loads and distributed energy resources(DERs) are reviewed.A model representation of a population of the water heater devices for the demand side frequency response is considered.A model representation of a population of battery energy storage system(BESS)-based DERs such as smart electric vehicles(EVs) charging, large-scale BESSs, and residential and non-residential BESSs, are highlighted. The simplified Great Britain power system and the 14-machine South-East Australian power system were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new methods in controlling power system frequency following a disturbance. These new methods are effective in recovering the fallen frequency response and present a great potential in controlling the frequency in future power systems. | Zeyad Assi OBAID Liana M.CIPCIGAN Lahieb ABRAHIM Mazin T.MUHSSIN | 2019 | Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy2019,7,1: | 8
Effect of acupotomy versus electroacupuncture on ethology and morphology in a rabbit model of knee osteoarthritis显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the treatment effect of acupotomy(Apo) in a rabbit model of knee osteoarthritis(KOA), compare the results of Apo versus electroacupuncture(E-Apu) on ethology, morphology, and structure of the articular cartilage surface in a rabbit model of KOA, and analyze the differences in the treatment effects of Apo versus E-Apu.METHODS: Twenty-eight male New Zealand white rabbits were randomized into four groups: normal control, blank model, Apo, and E-Apu(n = 7 in each group). Except for the normal control group, the left hindlegs of all rabbits were fixed in an extended position for 5 weeks to establish the KOA model. The passive range of motion(PROM) and Lequesne index were measured before and after the establishment of the KOA model to assess the ethology in all groups. Safranin O-fast green staining and the Mankin score were used to assess the morphological cartilaginous changes to compare the effect of Apo versus E-Apu on the degeneration of articular cartilage, and to identify which therapy was superior in treating KOA.RESULTS: Compared with before the establishment of the KOA model, the Lequesne index of the KOA model rabbits was significantly increased(P <0.01), while the PROM was significantly decreased(P < 0.01). The articular cartilaginous tissue in the three model groups exhibited pathological variations in the form of laminar derangement of cartilage cells, and so the Mankin score was significantly increased compared with the control group(P <0.01). At 1 week after the final treatment session, compared with the blank model group, both the Apo and E-Apu groups showed a significant decrease in the Lequesne index(P < 0.01), and attenuation in the degree of morphologic pathological changes(P < 0.05); The Apo improved the PROM significantly compared with the blank model group(P < 0.05), while the E-Apu had no effect(P > 0.05).Furthermore, compared with the E-Apu group, the Apo group had a significantly lower Lequesne index(P < 0.05), and a significantly greater PROM(P <0.05).CONCLUSION: In a rabbit model of KOA, both Apo and E-Apu reduce disorders of ethology and morphology, and improve the condition of the articular cartilage. The results suggest that Apo is more effective than E-Apu in improving the PROM and alleviating symptoms resulting from cartilage damage in a rabbit model of KOA. | Zhang Wei Gao Yang Guo Changqing Ibrahim Zeyad Ali Khattab Farid Mokhtari | 2019 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2019,39,2: | 6
Antioxidant and antiangiogenic activities of the essential oils of Myristica fragrans and Morinda citrifolia显示文摘Objective:Toinvestigate the anti-angiogenic activity and antioxidant properties of Myristica fragrans(M.fragrans)(nutmeg) and Morinda citrifolia(M.citrifolia)(mengkudu) oils. Methods:The nutmeg and megkudu essential oils were obtained by steam distillation. The antioxidant activities of both essenlial oils were delermined by beta-carotene/ linoleic acid bleaching assay and reducing power while the anti-angiogenic activity was investigated using rat aortic ring assay using various concentrations. Results:The results showed that nutmeg oil has higher antioxidant activity than mengkudu oil.The nutmeg oil effectively inhibited the oxidation of linoleic acid with(88.68±0.1)%while the inhibition percentage of oxidation of linoleic acid of the mengkudu oil is(69.44±0.4)%.The nutmeg oil and mengkudu oil showed reducing power with an EC50 value of 181.4μg/mL and 3 043.0μg/mL,respectively.The anliangiogenic activity of nutmeg oil showed significant antiangiogenic activity with IC50 of 77.64μg/mL comparing to mengkudu oil which exhibits IC50 of 109.30μg/mL.Conclusion:Bioactive compound(s) will be isolated from the nutmeg essential oil to be developed as antiangiogenic drugs. | Suthagar Pillai Piaru Roziahanim Mahmud Amin Malik Shah Abdul Majid Zeyad Daoud Mahmoud Nassar | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,4: | 3

β-cell dynamics in type 2 diabetes and in dietary and exercise interventions显示文摘Pancreaticβ-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance are two of the major causes of type 2 diabetes(T2D).Recent clinical and experimental studies have suggested that the functional capacity ofβ-cells,particularly in the first phase of insulin secretion,is a primary contributor to the progression of T2D and its associated complications.Pancreaticβ-cells undergo dynamic compensation and decompensation processes during the development of T2D,in which metabolic stresses such as endoplasmic reticulum stress, oxidative stress, and inflammatory signals are key regulators ofβ-cell dynamics.Dietary and exercise interventions have been shown to be effective approaches for the treatment of obesity and T2D,especially in the early stages.Whilst the targeted tissues and underlying mechanisms of dietary and exercise interventions remain somewhat vague, accumulating evidence has implicated the improvement ofβ-cell functional capacity. In this review,we summarize recent advances in the understanding of the dynamic adaptations ofβ-cell function in T2D progression and clarify the effects and mechanisms of dietary and exercise interventions onβ-cell dysfunction in T2D.This review provides molecular insights into the therapeutic effects of dietary and exercise interventions on T2D,and more importantly,it paves the way for future research on the related underlying mechanisms for developing precision prevention and treatment of T2D. | Chengan Lv Yuchen Sun Zhe Yu Zhang Zeyad Aboelela Xinyuan Qiu Zhuo-Xian Meng | 2022 | Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2022,14,7: | 1

Lipogenic effects of androgen signaling in normal and malignant prostate显示文摘Prostate cancer is an androgen-dependent cancer with unique metabolic features compared to many other solid tumors, and typically does not exhibit the“Warburg effect”.During malignant transformation,an early metabolic switch diverts the dependence of normal prostate cells on aerobic glycolysis for the synthesis of and secretion of citrate towards a more energetically favorable metabolic phenotype, whereby citrate is actively oxidised for energy and biosynthetic processes(i.e.de novo lipogenesis). It is now clear that lipid metabolism is one of the key androgen-regulated processes in prostate cells and alterations in lipid metabolism are a hallmark of prostate cancer, whereby increased de novo lipogenesis accompanied by overexpression of lipid metabolic genes are characteristic of primary and advanced disease.Despite recent advances in our understanding of altered lipid metabolism in prostate tumorigenesis and cancer progression, the intermediary metabolism of the normal prostate and its relationship to androgen signaling remains poorly understood. In this review,we discuss the fundamental metabolic relationships that are distinctive in normal versus malignant prostate tissues, and the role of androgens in the regulation of lipid metabolism at different stages of prostate tumorigenesis. | Chui Yan Mah Zeyad D.Nassar Johannes V.Swinnen Lisa M.Butler | 2020 | Asian Journal of Urology2020,7,3: | 1
