Forest Fire Susceptibility Modeling Using a Convolutional Neural Network for Yunnan Province of China显示文摘Forest fires have caused considerable losses to ecologies, societies, and economies worldwide. To minimize these losses and reduce forest fires, modeling and predicting the occurrence of forest fires are meaningful because they can support forest fire prevention and management. In recent years, the convolutional neural network(CNN) has become an important state-of-the-art deep learning algorithm, and its implementation has enriched many fields. Therefore, we proposed a spatial prediction model for forest fire susceptibility using a CNN. Past forest fire locations in Yunnan Province, China, from 2002 to 2010, and a set of 14 forest fire influencing factors were mapped using a geographic information system. Oversampling was applied to eliminate the class imbalance, and proportional stratified sampling was used to construct the training/validation sample libraries. A CNN architecture that is suitable for the prediction of forest fire susceptibility was designed and hyperparameters were optimized to improve the prediction accuracy. Then, the test dataset was fed into the trained model to construct the spatial prediction map of forest fire susceptibility in Yunnan Province. Finally, the prediction performance of the proposed model was assessed using several statistical measures—Wilcoxon signed-rank test, receiver operating characteristic curve, and area under the curve(AUC). The results confirmed the higher accuracy of the proposed CNN model(AUC 0.86)than those of the random forests, support vector machine, multilayer perceptron neural network, and kernel logistic regression benchmark classifiers. The CNN has stronger fitting and classification abilities and can make full use of neighborhood information, which is a promising alternative for the spatial prediction of forest fire susceptibility. This research extends the application of CNN to the prediction of forest fire susceptibility.Guoli Zhang Ming Wang Kai Liu 2019International Journal of Disaster Risk Science2019,10,3:12
Changes in air temperature over China in response to the recent global warming hiatus显示文摘The 1998-2012 global wanning hiatus has aroused great public interest over the past several years.Based on the air temperature measurements from 622 meteorological stations in China, the temperature response to the global warming hiatus was analyzed at national and regional scales. We found that air temperature changed-0.221°C/10a during 1998-2012,which was lower than the long-term trend for 1960-1998 by 0.427°C/10a.Therefore,the warming hiatus in China was more pronounced than the global mean.Winter played a domi nant role in the nati on wide warming hiatus, con tributi ng 74.13%,while summer contributed the least among the four seasons.Furthermore, the warming hiatus was spatial heterogeneous across different climate conditions in China.Comparing the three geographic zones, the monsoon region of eastern China, arid region of northwestern China, and high frigid region of the Tibetan Plateau, there was significant cooling in eastern and northwestern China. In eastern China, which contributed 53.79%,the trend magnitudes were 0.896°C/10a in winter and 0.134°C/10a in summer. In the Tibeta n Plateau, air temperature in creased by 0.204°C/10a,indicating a lack of a significant warming hiatus.More broadly, the warming hiatus in China may have been associated with the negative phase of PDO and reduction in sunspot numbers and total solar radiation. Finally, although a warming hiatus occurred in China from 1998 to 2012,air temperature rapidly increased after 2012 and will likely to continuously warm in the next few years.DU Qinqin ZHANG Mingjun WANG Shengjie CHE Cunwei MA Rong MA Zhuanzhuan 2019Journal of Geographical Sciences2019,29,4:9
The roles of a decision support system in applying forest ecosystem management in Northeast China显示文摘Forest ecosystems provide a variety of services and forest ecosystem management (FEM) is an effective approach to maximize the services. Because of the complexity of forest ecosystems, the applications of FEM can be facilitated with decision support systems (DSS) that recognize and incorporate ecological and socio-economic variables. With the rapid development of computation and information technologies, DSS have been advanced in many ways. Traditional forest management within a forestry unit in China is planned on a yearly basis. The planning itself remains primarily a verbal concept as there are no quantitative decision-support tools available to translate the concept into forest management actions. For the purposes of FEM at the management level, a forest management DFF, FORESTAR(R), has been developed under a framework of geographic information system (GIS) and forest models. The paper explained the intelligent modeling mechanisms and demonstrated how the applications of FEM can be strengthened with the applications of FORESTAR(R).DAI Limin, ZHENG Bofu, Guofan Shao & ZHOU Li State Key Lab of Systems Ecology, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100085, China Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, USA Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China 2006Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1:9
Planetary Stationary Waves in the Atmosphere Part I: Orographic Stationary Waves显示文摘It is proposed that the orographic stationary waves are required by long-term balance of momentum in the atmosphere with zonally asymmetric orographic forcing. This hypothesis may be confirmed successfully with the theoretical model of geostrophic waves. In the Part I, we will explain the observed phase distributions of orographic stationary waves at middle and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, according to the long-term balance of zonal momentum over the stationary orographic forcing. It is revealed that the geographic distribution of stationary waves depends not only on local topgraphy but also on mean circulation fields and angular momentum flux in the atmosphere. So these waves cannot be simulated by the models in a restricted area.Yong. L. McHall 1991Advances in Atmospheric Sciences1991,8,2:7
Spatial analysis and evaluation of a coal deposit by coupling AHP & GIS techniques显示文摘Nowadays, the evaluation of coal deposits becomes crucial, due to many uncontrollable factors, which affect the energy sector.A comparative evaluation of coal deposits is essential for their hierarchical classification regarding their sustainable exploitation, when compared to other coal deposits or competitive fuels, which may be used as alternative solutions for electricity generation. In this paper,a method for spatial analysis and evaluation of a lignite deposit is proposed,by creating four spatial key indicators via GIS analysis, which are then aggregated by applying a weighted linear combination. The analytical hierarchy process is applied to estimate the relative weights of the indicators,in order to perform a weighted cartographic overlay.Through the synthesis of the indicators,an overall, total spatial quality indicator is calculated. The weighted analysis was shown to be more effective compared to the unweighted one, because it can provide more reliable results regarding the exploitation of the examined lignite deposit. The implementation of GIS-based analytical hierarchy process in spatial analysis and evaluation of lignite deposits,in terms of sustainable exploitation, demonstrates that this method can be extensively applied for evaluating the economic potential of mineral deposits.Nikolaos Paraskevis Christos Roumpos Nikolaos Stathopoulos Aikaterini Adam 2019International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2019,29,6:7
A common sense geographic knowledge base for GIR显示文摘As background knowledge of geographic information retrieval (GIR),the gazetteers have their limitations. In this paper we propose to develop and implement a com-mon sense geographic knowledge base (CSGKB) instead of the gazetteers. We define that CSGKB is concerned with the representation of geographic knowledge in human brain and the simulation of geographic reasoning in daily life. Traditional geographic information system (GIS) is based on the model of map with its data based on geographic coordinates and its computation based on geometry. However,CSGKB,which is made up of geographic features and relationships and is based on qualitative spatio-temporal reasoning, can be viewed as the direct model of geographic world. This paper also discusses the characters of CSGKB and pre-sents its structure which is composed of knowledge base, inference engine,geo-graphic ontology and learner. The applications using CSGKB include geographic information retrieval (GIR),natural language processing (NLP),named entity rec-ognition (NER),Semantic Web,etc. At present, our work focuses on the design of geographic ontology and the implementation of the CSGKB knowledge base. In this paper we describe the CSGKB ontology structure, top ontology, geographic loca-tion ontology, spatial relationship ontology, and domain ontologies. Finally,we in-troduce the current state of implementation of CSGKB and give an outlook on our future researches.ZHANG Yi,GAO Yong,XUE LuLu,SHEN Si & CHEN KaiChen Institute of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System,Peking University,Beijing 100871,China 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,S1:7
Digitally determining forest inventory units with an ecological classification system显示文摘Management-level forest resource data in China were obtained with a combination of two forest inventories. However, inconsistencies in the spatial attributes of forest data vary between the two inventory types and between two inventories of the same type. The inconsistencies make it inconvenient for long-term forest management planning with digital technologies. Ecological Land Types (ELTs) and Ecological Land Type Phases (ELTPs) have been mapped in selected forestry regions in northeast China, where important forest industries are located. The boundaries of ELTs are determined by geomorphic conditions, which are quantified by Digital Elevation Models (DEM); ELTPs are classified by overlaying ELTs with forest vegetation data layers that are obtained with both remotely sensed and ground data. The ELTPs represent the divisions of land in terms of both natural and human-induced forest conditions, and therefore they are reliable units for forest inventories and management. This paper introduces a case study for digitally determining forest inventory units in Benxi City, Liaoning Province, northeast China. The general objective of the study was to explain how a compatible forest inventory system should be designed and why the compatible forest inventory system was significant to digital forestry in China.TANG Una, WANG Qingli, Guofan Shao, DAI Limin, WANG Shunzhong, LI Xiufen & XU Dong Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907, USA 2006Science China(Technological Sciences)2006,49,z1:6
Evaluating effectiveness of frequency ratio, fuzzy logic and logistic regression models in assessing landslide susceptibility: a case from Rudraprayag district, India显示文摘Rudraprayag in Garhwal Himalayan division is one of the most vulnerable districts to landslides in India. Heavy rainfall, steep slope and developmental activities are important factors for the occurrence of landslides in the district. Therefore, specific assessment of landslide susceptibility and its accuracy at regional level is essential for disaster management and proper land use planning. The article evaluates effectiveness of frequency ratio, fuzzy logic and logistic regression models for assessing landslide susceptibility in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state, India. A landslide inventory map was prepared and verified by field data. Fourteen landslide parameters and generated inventory map were utilized to prepare landslide susceptibility maps through frequency ratio, fuzzy logic and logistic regression models. Landslide susceptibility maps generated through these models were classified into very high, high, medium, low and very low categories using natural breaks classification. Receiver operating characteristics(ROC) curve, spatially agreed area approach and seed cell area index(SCAI) method were used to validate the landslide models. Validation results revealed that fuzzy logic model was found to be more effective in assessing landslide susceptibility in the study area. The landslide susceptibility map generated through fuzzy logic model can be best utilized for landslide disaster management and effective land use planning.Mehebub SAHANA Haroon SAJJAD 2017Journal of Mountain Science2017,14,11:6
Spatial distribution of the oxygen-18 in precipitation in China based on a new empirical model显示文摘Modeling the oxygen-18 in precipitation based on regional topography and meteorological factors is helpful to constrain missing isotopic data in some regions that is required for many paleoclimate,eco-hydrological and atmospheric circulation studies. Therefore, the relationship betweenδ18Oin precipitation(δ18OPPT)and the affecting factors need to be thoroughly understood. We present a model considering the combined effects of temperature, altitude, and latitude on the spatial variability of annual average of stable isotopes in precipitation across China. This new model performed significantly better(P<0.05)than the widely used Farquhar and Bowen&Wilkinsonmodels. Our model allows modelling the spatial distribution of isotopes in precipitation depending on temperature variation. The residuals of presented model did not significantly correlate with altitude.Based on the model and residuals,a high-resolution map of annual averageδ18Opptacross China was generated.δ18OPPTdecreased from low toward high latitudes and from low towards high altitudes area. The model application provides important information forancient climate, hydrological cycle and water vapor sources studies.ZHAO Pei GUO Zheng-sheng SHE Dong-li TANG Xiang-yu 2019Journal of Mountain Science2019,16,11:5
Determining the spatial distribution of soil properties using the environmental covariates and multivariate statistical analysis: a case study in semi-arid regions of Iran显示文摘Natural soil-forming factors such as landforms, parent materials or biota lead to high variability in soil properties. However, there is not enough research quantifying which environmental factor(s) can be the most relevant to predicting soil properties at the catchment scale in semi-arid areas. Thus, this research aims to investigate the ability of multivariate statistical analyses to distinguish which soil properties follow a clear spatial pattern conditioned by specific environmental characteristics in a semi-arid region of Iran. To achieve this goal, we digitized parent materials and landforms by recent orthophotography. Also, we extracted ten topographical attributes and five remote sensing variables from a digital elevation model(DEM) and the Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper(ETM), respectively. These factors were contrasted for 334 soil samples(depth of 0–30 cm). Cluster analysis and soil maps reveal that Cluster 1 comprises of limestones, massive limestones and mixed deposits of conglomerates with low soil organic carbon(SOC) and clay contents, and Cluster 2 is composed of soils that originated from quaternary and early quaternary parent materials such as terraces, alluvial fans, lake deposits, and marls or conglomerates that register the highest SOC content and the lowest sand and silt contents. Further, it is confirmed that soils with the highest SOC and clay contents are located in wetlands, lagoons, alluvial fans and piedmonts, while soils with the lowest SOC and clay contents are located in dissected alluvial fans, eroded hills, rock outcrops and steep hills. The results of principal component analysis using the remote sensing data and topographical attributes identify five main components, which explain 73.3% of the total variability of soil properties. Environmental factors such as hillslope morphology and all of the remote sensing variables can largely explain SOC variability, but no significant correlation is found for soil texture and calcium carbonate equivalent contents. Therefore, we conclude that SOC can be considered as the best-predicted soil property in semi-arid regions.Mojtaba ZERAATPISHEH Shamsollah AYOUBI Magboul SULIEMAN JesusRODRIGO-COMINO 2019Journal of Arid Land2019,11,4:5
A comprehensive census of lake microbial diversity on a global scale显示文摘Despite recent interest in microbial diversity and community structure of lakes across various spatial scales, a global biogeographic distribution pattern and its controlling factors have not been fully disclosed. Here, we compiled and analyzed 88,334,735 environmental 16S rRNA sequences from 431 lakes across a wide range of geographical distance and environmental conditions(in particular, salinity, 0–373.3 gL^–1). Our results showed that lake sediments inhabit significantly(ANOVA: P<0.001) more diverse microbial communities than lake waters. Non-metric dimensional scaling(NMDS) ordinations indicated that microbial community compositions differed distinctly among sample types(freshwater vs. saline, water vs. sediment) and geographic locations. Mantel and partial Mantel tests showed that microbial community composition in lake water was significantly(P=0.001) correlated with geographic distance, salinity, and pH. Statistical analyses based on neutral community and null models indicated that stochastic processes may play predominant roles in shaping the microbial biogeographic distribution patterns in the studied global lake waters. The dispersal-related stochasticity(e.g., homogenizing dispersal) exhibited a stronger influence on the distribution of microbial community in freshwater lakes than in saline lakes. Overall, this work expands our understanding of the impact of geographic distance, environmental conditions, and stochastic processes on microbial distribution in global lakes.Jian Yang Hongchen Jiang Hailiang Dong Yongqin Liu 2019Science China(Life Sciences)2019,62,10:5

Positioning localities from spatial assertions based on Voronoi neighboring显示文摘With the rapid development of Internet, much spatial information contained in non-structured or semi-structured documents is available on the World Wide Web.In such documents, localities are always textually described using spatial relationships and named places, instead of numerical coordinates.Hence, extracting positional information from locality descriptions is an important task.In this paper,we bridge two aspects of locality descriptions, namely generating locality descriptions and positioning localities, and provide a method to compute probability density according to the selection probability of a reference object to describe the position of the target object.Refinement operation on uncertainty field is used to deal with locality description involving multiple reference objects.Three metrics are introduced to measure the results of positioning localities. We choose the mixed selection probability function based on Euclidean distance and Voronoi stolen-area to compute probability density function. Finally,we use three cases to demonstrate the proposed methods.GONG YongXi 1,2,3,LI GuiCai 1,LIU Yu 2 & YANG Jian 1 1 Shenzhen Key Lab of Recycling Economy,Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School,Shenzhen 518055,China 2Institute of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems,Peking University,Beijing 100871,China 3College of Urban and Environmental Science,Peking University,Beijing 100871,China 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,S1:4

Aerobic bacterial flora of the normal conjunctiva at high altitude area of Shimla Hills in India:a hospital based study显示文摘AIM:To study the normal aerobic conjunctival flora in lower to mid Himalayan region of Shimla Hills.METHODS:Samples from normal conjunctiva of 200 individuals above the age of 13 years who visited Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital Shimla for refraction or cataract surgery were taken by anaesthetising the conjunctival sac with sterile 4% Xylocaine solution.Samples were obtained by gently rubbing lower fornix with a sterile cotton wool swab moistened with normal saline and keeping the eye lids wide apart to avoid contamination from lid margins. It was immediately inoculated in Brain Heart infusion and subjected to standard aerobic culture and identification techniques.RESULTS:Totally,72 eyes(36%) conjunctival sacs were sterile.Predominant aerobes isolated were Staphylococcus spp.in 120(60%) followed by Haemophilus in 16(8%),diphtheroids in 10(5%),and Escherichia coli(E.coli) in 4(2%).A single aerobe was isolated from 98 eyes(49%) while 30 eyes(15%) yielded more than 1 aerobe.Staphylococcus epidermidis(S.epidermidis) was the most common bacterium, found alone in 58 eyes(29%) and in combination with another aerobe in 30 eyes(15%),followed by Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) in 18(9%) and 10 eyes(5%) respectively.CONCLUSION:S.epidermidis is the most common commensal organism followed by Haemophilus species.diphtheroids occupied the third position which otherwise are found more abundantly in literature.Pathogens like S.aureus,Staphylococcus citreus and E.coli were also found. Therefore, preoperative administration of topical broad spectrum antibiotics is extremely important in prophylaxis against ocular infection. The variation in microflora of normal conjunctiva in this part of world can be attributed to geographical, climatic and ethnic characteristics of the population under study.Sharma Parmeshri Dass Sharma Neelam Gupta Ravinder Kumar Singh Parul 2013International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2013,6,5:4
Number of Species and Geographical Distribution of Diospyros L.(Ebenaceae) in China显示文摘Diospyros L. is the largest, most widely distributed, and economically important genus of the family Ebenaceae. However, various researchers disagree on the number of species and geographical distribution of Diospyros in China. For the purpose of providing a scientific basis for the effective protection and rational use of Diospyros, the present study involved a comprehensive review of the literature, electronic databases, and herbaria as well as field investigations. The results showed as the following.(1) While 174 scientific names have been published for various taxa of Diospyros in China, by screening and excluding synonyms, 65 species names were considered acceptable; these account for about 12%of the total species of Diospyros globally.(2) A review of herbarium specimens documented that Diospyros occurs in 28 administrative regions of China, more than the literature records. Species richness decreases from south to north in China while Guangxi, Yunnan, Guangdong, and Hainan have the greatest number of species.(3) Among the 65 relatively reliable Diospyros species, 45 species are endemic to China and 18 species are stenochoric. Some species may have become extinct as a result of environmental degradation and the status of some germplasm remain unresolved. In brief, Chinese Diospyros includes abundant, China-specific, and widely distributed features. Nevertheless, comprehensive species delimitation and the analysis of phylogenetic relationships will still require further study.Donglan Tang Qinglin Zhang Liqing Xu Dayong Guo Zhengrong Luo 2019Horticultural Plant Journal2019,5,2:4
Spatio-temporal variations of harmful algal blooms along the coast of Guangdong,Southern China during 1980–2016显示文摘Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a recurring problem, posing severe impacts on marine ecosystems, fisheries, mariculture industry, and even public health. In this study, the geographic information system (GIS) was utilized to determine spatial and temporal characteristics of HAB events in the coastal waters of Guangdong from 1980–2016. We analyzed distribution patterns and characteristics of HABs by dividing the coast of Guangdong into well-known bays, estuary and coastal waters. Results showed that there were a total of 337 HABs recorded in Guangdong coastal waters. Spatial and temporal distributions varied among diff erent regions. Most HABs occurred in the Mirs Bay, followed by the west coast of Daya Bay, while a few occurred in the west and east coasts of Guangdong but with an increasing trend in the past two decades. HABs occurred mostly in warmer months of March to May in the western coast of Guangdong, March and April in Mirs Bay, April in Zhujiang (Pearl) River estuary, November in eastern coast of Guangdong. For Daya Bay, most HABs were reported between March and September. The most frequently occurring HABs species were Noctiluca scintillans , Phaeocystis globosa , Skeletonema costatum and Scrippsiella trochoidea , occurring mostly in Mirs Bay, western Guangdong coast area, eastern Guangdong coast area and Zhujiang River estuary and Daya Bay, respectively. Ichthyotoxic blooms were more common than toxic blooms, and Heterosigma akashiwo , Chattonella marina , Karenia mikimotoi and P haeocystis globosa were the most common ichthyotoxic species. Our results provide baseline information useful for policy making and management of HABs in the region.LI Li Lü Songhui CEN Jingyi 2019Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2019,37,2:4
