Mechanical Properties and Stress Strain Relationship Models for Bamboo Scrimber显示文摘In order to investigate the basic mechanical properties and stress strain relationship model for bamboo scrimber manufactured based on a new technique,a large quantities of experiments have been carried out.Based on the analysis of the test results, the following conclusions can be drawn. Two main typical failure modes were classified for bamboo scrimber specimens both under tension parallel to grain and tension perpendicular to grain.Brittle failure happened for all tensile tests. The slope values for the elastic stages have bigger discreteness compared with those for the specimens under tensile parallel to grain. The failure modes for bamboo scrimber specimens under compression parallel to grain could be divided into four.Only one main failure mode happened both for the bending specimens and the shear specimens. With the COV values of 28.64 and 25.72 respectively, the values for the strength and elastic modulus under tensile perpendicular to grain have the largest discreteness for bamboo scrimber. From the point of CHV values, the relationship among the mechanical parameters for bamboo scrimber were proposed based on the test results.Compared with other green building materials, bamboo scrimber manufactured based on a new technique has better mechanical performance and could be used in construction area.Three stress strain relationship models which are four-linear model, quadratic function model, and cubic function model were proposed for bamboo scrimber specimens manufactured based on a new technique. The latter two models gives better prediction for stress strain relationship in elastic plastic stage. | Haitao Li Huizhong Zhang Zhenyu Qiu Jingwen Su Dongdong Wei Rodolfo Lorenzo Conggan Yuan Hongzheng Liu Chungui Zhou | 2020 | Journal of Renewable Materials2020,8,1: | 7
Compression Behaviors of Parallel Bamboo Strand Lumber Under Static Loading显示文摘In order to investigate the influence of length and compression directions upon behaviour of parallel bamboo strand lumber(PBSL)specimens,240 axial compression tests have been performed. With three similar one different typical failure modes, the mechanical performance for PBSL specimens under compression parallel to grain and perpendicular to grain are different as a whole. From the point of the characteristic values, the compression strength parallel to grain is 2.1 times of the compression strength perpendicular to grain. The elastic modulus for compression parallel to grain is 3.64 times of the compression strength perpendicular to grain. While the compression ratios along two compression directions are equal to each other. The bigger Poisson ratios for one typical side surface is 3.93 times of that for another typical side surface for PBSL specimens under compression perpendicular to grain, and the bigger value is equal to that for PBSL specimens under compression parallel to grain.Length can influence the mechanical properties of the PBSL specimens. The size 50 mm×50 mm×100 mm should be good choice for the standard or code to measure the compression strength.PBSL materials have better ductility under compression parallel to grain than that under compression perpendicular to grain.Stress-strain relationship models were proposed for PBSL specimens under compression parallel to grain and perpendicular to grain, respectively. These proposed models gave a good agreement with the test results. | Haitao Li Zhenyu Qiu Gang Wu Dongdong Wei Rodolfo Lorenzo Conggan Yuan Huizhong Zhang Rong Liu | 2019 | Journal of Renewable Materials2019,7,7: | 7
Preparation and Characterization of Waterborne Polyurethane/Cellulose Nanocrystal Composite Membrane from Recycling Waste Paper显示文摘Cellulose plays a key role in abundant organic natural materials meeting the increasing demand for green and biocompatible products. The highly crystalline nanoscale component of cellulose nanocrystals has recently attracted great attention due to the versatile performance as filler or matrix in producing functional materials. In this work,we prepared the waterborne polyurethane via a prepolymer process, and obtained cellulose and cellulose nanocrystals from waste paper via a facile acid hydrolysis process. After that, the cellulose nanocrystals were assembled into film and mixed with polyurethane to prepare flexible polyurethane/cellulose nanocrystals composite membrane with different soaking time. The correlation between the bulk structure and applied properties including thermal resistance and mechanical property was investigated by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and folding test. The structure analysis indicates that cellulose nanocrystals prepared from used paper have a quality similar to that of commercial cellulose.Meanwhile, the cellulose nanocrystals have been mixed with polyurethane uniformly.Polyurethane can significantly benefit to the thermal resistance and mechanical property of the cellulose nanocrystals film. The polyurethane/cellulose nanocrystals composite membrane present good flexibility and may hold a significantly potential application as visual and flexible material. | Xing Zhou Xin Zhang Dong Wang Changqing Fang Wanqing Lei Zhigang Huang Yonghua Song Xinyu He Yingwei Huang | 2020 | Journal of Renewable Materials2020,8,6: | 5
Bio-Based Hyperbranched Toughener From Tannic Acid and Its Enhanced Solvent-Free Epoxy Resin with High Performance显示文摘It is essential to design economic and efficient tougheners to prepare high-performance epoxy resin;however, this has remained a huge challenge.Herein,an eco-friendly,low-cost,and facile-fabricated bio-based hyperbranched toughener, carboxylic acid-functionalized tannic acid(CATA),was successfully prepared and applicated to the preparation of solvent-free epoxy resins. The mechanical performance, morphology, structural characterization, and thermal characterization of toughened epoxy resin system were studied. The toughened epoxy resin system with only 1.0wt%CATA reached the highest impact strength,111%higher than the neat epoxy resin system.Notably, the tensile strength and elongation at break of toughened epoxy resin systems increased moderately with increasing CATA loading.Nonphase-separated hybrids with significant toughening effect were obtained.Additionally, the thermal stabilities of toughened epoxy resin systems decreased with increasing CATA loading. This study provides an eco-friendly,cost-effective,and facile approach for the preparation of high-performance,solvent-free epoxy resins with potential for practical applications in sealing integrated circuits and electrical devices fields. | Jie Xu Jiayao Yang Hengxu Wang Peng Lin Xiaohuan Liu Jinjie Zhang Shenyuan Fu Yuxun Tang | 2019 | Journal of Renewable Materials2019,7,12: | 5
Study on the Soy Protein-Based Adhesive Cross-Linked by Glyoxal显示文摘Based on the ESI-MS and ^(13)C-NMR analysis of the forms of glyoxal in acidic and alkaline solutions, the soy-based adhesive cross-linked by glyoxal was prepared in this work. The results showed that glyoxal existed in water in different forms at different pH levels.Under alkaline conditions, glyoxal transformed to glycolate through the intramolecular disproportionation reaction.Under acidic conditions, although some of glyoxal transformed to glycolate as what happened under alkaline conditions, most of glyoxal molecules existed in the form of fiveor six-membered cyclic ether structure. No ethylene tetraol or free aldehyde group was actually detected under these conditions.Although glyoxal reacted with soy protein under both acidic and alkaline conditions, alkaline conditions were more favorable for the improvement of mechanical performance and water resistance of soybased adhesives than acid conditions. | Zhigang Wu Jiankun Liang Hong Lei Bengang Zhang Xuedong Xi Lifen Li | 2021 | Journal of Renewable Materials2021,9,2: | 5
Effect of Ultraviolet Aging on the Bonding and Tensile Properties of Polymer-Cement Composite显示文摘In this paper, the specimens of polymer-cement composites after 1 d,7 d,15 d,and 30 d aging without aging and UV aging are subjected to fixed extension test and tensile test.By observing the mode of the composite in the fixed-elongation test, and measuring the elastic recovery rate, tensile strength, elongation at break, peak tensile strain, tensile toughness and pre-peak tensile toughness of the composite, the effects of UV aging on the bonding and the tensile properties of the composite were studied. And combining with scanning electron microscopy experiments, the micro-mechanism of the effect of ultraviolet aging on the properties of composite was analyzed. The results showed that the composite had a good bonding property, and no damage was observed after UV aging for 30 days. The UV aging increased the elastic recovery rate and peak tensile within a certain range. The elastic recovery rate and peak tensile strain of the composite increased by 6.60%and 23.55%respectively after UV aging for 15 days. Therefore, the UV aging could enhance the tensile property and the tensile energy consumption performance of the composite. The tensile strength of the composite increased by 65.36%after UV aging for 30 days. The tensile toughness and pre-peak tensile toughness of the composite were increased by 43.29%and 101.83%respectively after UV aging for 15 days. The elongation at break of composite decreased continuously after UV aging due to the photo-oxygen reaction,as well as secondary hydration reaction and cross-linking curing reaction of cement. | Zhihang Wang Jinyu Xu Xin Meng Congjin Zhu | 2021 | Journal of Renewable Materials2021,9,6: | 5
Experimental Study of Waste Tire Rubber,Wood-Plastic Particles and Shale Ceramsite on the Performance of Self-Compacting Concrete显示文摘In recent decades, the utilization of waste tires, plastic and artificial shale ceramsite as alternative fine aggregate to make self-compacting concrete(SCC)has been recognized as an eco-friendly and sustainable method to manufacture renewable construction materials. In this study, three kinds of recycled aggregates:recycled tire rubber particles,wood-plastic particles, artificial shale ceramsite were used to replace the sand by different volume(5%,10%,20%and 30%),and their effects on the fresh and hardened properties of SCC were investigated. The slump flow and V-funnel tests were conducted to evaluate the fresh properties of modified-SCC mixtures. The hardened properties include 3,7 and 28-day compressive strengths, axial compressive strength, static elastic modulus, and compressive stress-strain behavior at 28 days. The test results showed that the incorporation of these three kinds of alternative aggregates had a negative impact on the fresh properties of SCC.Besides, the 28-day compressive strength and axial compressive strength decreased with the increase of rubber and wood-plastic particles content. In this experiment, all the three kinds of recycled aggregates can improve the ductility and deformability of SCC,and the most excellent performance comes from SCC with recycled rubber particles. | Lei Tian Liuchao Qiu Jingjun Li Yongsen Yang | 2020 | Journal of Renewable Materials2020,8,2: | 5
Organosolv Lignin for Non-Isocyanate Based Polyurethanes (NIPU) as Wood Adhesive显示文摘A non-isocyanate-based polyurethane(NIPU)wood adhesive was produced from organosolv lignin, which is a bio-sourced raw material, available in large quantities and produced as a by-product of the paper industry. The formulation of this new lignin-based NIPU adhesive, which is presented, was chemically characterised by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight(MALDI ToF)mass spectrometry and by Fourier Transform Infra-Red(FTIR)spectrometry analyses. The oligomers formed were determined and showed that the three species involved in the NIPU adhesive preparation were formed by the co-reaction of the three reagents used:lignin, dimethyl carbonate, and hexamethylene diamine.Linear and branched structures were both identi-fied.Mechanical properties of the adhesive were determined using the Automated Bonding Evaluation System(ABES)and internal bond(IB)strength test of the laboratory particleboard bonded with it.The adhesive has shown satisfactory mechanical properties after hot pressing at 230℃.Such a temperature is used industrially in the most modern particleboard factories, but since it is hardly feasible for more conventional wood bonding equipment, the reactivity of the NIPU adhesive was successfully increased with the addition of a small percentage of a silane coupling agent. With the addition of the silane, the proposed NIPU adhesive could also be used at a hot-pressing temperature lower than 200℃. | Jaša Saražin Antonio Pizzi Siham Amirou Detlef Schmiedl MilanŠernek | 2021 | Journal of Renewable Materials2021,9,5: | 4
Fabrication of Crack-Free Flattened Bamboo and Its Macro-/MicroMorphological and Mechanical Properties显示文摘This work aimed to help the bamboo industry develop methodology for producing imperfection-free bamboo boards that can serve either decorative or structural benefit to consumers seeking to engage with the bioeconomy.Specifically, softened and slotted bamboo tubes were handled by a roller device with nails to render crack-free flattened bamboo board.Softening temperature and time were optimized herein according to findings regarding chemical composition and board mechanical properties. The optimal softening parameters for saturated steam heat treatment is proved to be 160°C for 8 min.The flattened bamboo board possesses an increased bending strength of 101.5 MPa and a decreased bending modulus of 7.7 GPa,being compared with only-softened bamboo. The corresponding changing mechanism is determined in-depth by the micro-morphological and mechanical results based on in-situ SEM and AFM technologies.Under the action of nails and rolling processes, the bamboo texture becomes compact with crushed and fragmented conduit walls. The resulting cell cavity then becomes stretched and compressed, taking on a morphology which allows for the mechanical penalties associated with flattening to be avoided.According to the micro-mechanical results obtained by AFM,compared with unflatten bamboo, the Young’s modulus of the cell membrane in transverse direction(YT)decreases to 1.00 GPa while the corresponding Young’s modulus in radial direction(YR)increases to 7.29 GPa. | Zhichao Lou Tiancheng Yuan Qiuyi Wang Xinwu Wu Shouheng Hu Xiaomeng Hao Xianmiao Liu Yanjun Li | 2021 | Journal of Renewable Materials2021,9,5: | 4
Development of Cardanol-Based Polyol via Click Chemistry and Crosslinking with Melamine Formaldehyde Resin for Coating Applications显示文摘The research work presented in this article deals with the synthesis of cardanol-based polyol and its curing with hexabutoxymethyl melamine(HBMM)for application in coatings.Cardanol-based polyol was prepared via thiol-ene click reaction using thioglycerol.Unsaturation present in the long chain of cardanol was successfully utilized to synthesize polyol via thiol-ene coupling. The reaction was carried out between cardanol and thioglycerol in the presence of Irgacure 184(photoinitiator)and 1,8-Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene(catalyst)under UV light for 12 h at 80°C.After completion of the reaction, one mole of thioglycerol was successfully added across the double bond of a fatty chain of cardanol and confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and hydroxyl and iodine values were determined.Furthermore, the polyol thus prepared was cured with commercial HBMM in various proportions, such as 1:0.6,1:0.8 and 1:1,on an equivalent basis. The coatings were then characterized for mechanical, chemical, optical, thermal and anticorrosive properties. It was observed that coatings exhibited excellent performance properties as compared to that of its acrylic counterpart. | Kunal Wazarkar Anagha Sabnis | 2018 | Journal of Renewable Materials2018,6,4: | 4
Constructing Straight Pores and Improving Mechanical Properties of GangueBased Porous Ceramics显示文摘The large-scale accumulation and pollution of solid mining waste is an urgent issue.Coal gangue is a prominent type of solid waste, and shows promise for use in high value-added products due to its content of many important compounds, including SiO_(2) and Al2O3.This study proposed the preparation of highly porous ceramics from coal gangue, coal slime, and coconut palm fibers. The ceramics were produced at a sintering temperature of 950℃ with a fiber content of 6 wt%,which led to the formation of porous ceramics with a porosity of 66.93%,volume density of 1.0329 g/cm^(3),compressive strength of 1.1025 MPa,and thermal conductivity is 0.3919 K(W/mk).A finite element model of the porous ceramics was established using the Abaqus module in ANSYS software, where the stress distribution and compressive strength were simulated.Further, the relationship between porosity and compressive strength was analyzed. The thermal properties of the porous ceramics were analyzed using the Fluent module, where the simulated changes in porosity under various sintering temperatures were consistent with the experimental data. The preparation of this highly porous ceramic from solid waste coal gangue shows promise for the minimizing the impact of waste gas and wastewater pollution in the future. | Hang Xu Huiling Du Le Kang Qiudi Cheng Danni Feng Siyu Xia | 2021 | Journal of Renewable Materials2021,9,12: | 4
Synthetic Process of Bio-Based Phenol Formaldehyde Adhesive Derived from Demethylated Wheat Straw Alkali Lignin and Its Curing Behavior显示文摘Lignin is a natural biopolymer with a complex three-dimensional network, commercially obtained from wasteliquid of paper pulp and bioethanol production, and could be a candidate for preparation of environment-friendlybio-based polyphenol material. In the present work, the demethylated wheat straw alkali lignin (D-Lig), preparedby demethylation of wheat straw alkali lignin (Lig) using an in-situ generated Lewis acid, was used to synthesizebio-based phenol formaldehyde resin adhesive (D-LPF) applied in plywood. Effects of synthetic process’s factors, including lignin substitution for phenol, NaOH concentration and molar ratio of formaldehyde to phenol, on thebonding strength and free formaldehyde content of D-LPF were investigated in detail, and the optimum syntheticprocess of D-LPF was obtained as following: Lignin substitution for phenol 60%, NaOH concentration 5.0% andmolar ratio of formaldehyde to phenol 2.0, and under the optimum reaction condition, the D-LPF presented lower free formaldehyde content (0.18%) and higher bonding strength (2.19 MPa), which was better than those ofcontaining-lignin phenol formaldehyde resin adhesive (LPF). Additionally, the curing behavior of the adhesivewas studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) combined with gel time. It can be obtained that D-LPFresin adhesive had the shortest gel time, and fastest curing rate, compared with those of PF and L-PF resin adhesives. The curing kinetics data was fitted well by Kissinger model using non-isothermal DSC method, and theaverage activation energy value was 85.3 kJ/mol, slightly higher than that of commercial PF resin, while lowerthan that of LPF (90.2 kJ/mol). Finally, based on the analytical results of high temperature fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), a possible curing mechanism of D-LPF was proposed. | Yan Song Zhixin Wang Xin Zhang Rong Zhang Jinchun Li | 2021 | Journal of Renewable Materials2021,9,5: | 3
Different Effects of Wet and Dry Grinding on the Activation of Iron Ore Tailings显示文摘Improving the activity of Iron Ore Tailings(IOTs)to utilize them as a mineral admixture in cement-based minerals is still challenging. In this paper, the wet grinding technology was employed to stimulate the activity of IOTs,and the traditional dry grinding method was used as a reference. The effect of wet grinding on the activation of IOTs was evaluated through ion leaching from an alkaline solution and the reactivity index.Additionally,a detailed comparison between Dry-grinding Iron Ore Tailings(DIOTs)and Wet-grinding Iron Ore Tailings(WIOTs)was made. This comparison was based on particle characteristics, crystal structures, chemical structure, and surface properties. The results showed that the particle size of IOTs reduced rapidly during wet grinding. In addition,WIOTs had a higher activity index compared to DIOTs.The storage of lattice distortions in the quartz crystal structure was also more significant during the wet grinding process than during the dry grinding process. Moreover, both prolonged dry and wet grinding could destabilize the Si-O bond and decrease the surface binding energy. | Yingchun Yang Liqing Chen Yuguang Mao | 2021 | Journal of Renewable Materials2021,9,12: | 3

Study on Thermal Insulation Performance of Cross-Laminated Bamboo Wall显示文摘In recent years, bamboo,as a green building material, has attracted more and more attention worldwide.Inspired by the investigation of cross-laminated timber in structural systems,a new engineered cross-laminated bamboo(CLB)consisting of the cross lamination of bamboo scrimber plates is proposed in this paper. To evaluate its potential in structural applications, the thermal insulation performances of the CLB walls and CLB walls with the EPS foam plate were studied and evaluated by the temperature-controlled box-heat flow meter method.Test results indicated that the thermal insulation performance improved with the increase of thickness, but different wall configurations had little effect on the thermal insulation performance under the same thickness of the CLB wall. The thermal insulation performance of EPS-CLB composite wall was much better than that of CLB wall.In addition,a relatively acceptable accuracy of the theoretical calculations was proved. Finally, the influence of different locations of the EPS foam plate on heat transfer coefficient can be neglected as it was studied based on the validated numerical models. | Qingfang Lv Weiyang Wang Ye Liu | 2019 | Journal of Renewable Materials2019,7,11: | 3
Review on Connections for Original Bamboo Structures显示文摘Bamboo is a green construction material in line with sustainable development strategies. The use of raw bamboo in architecture has existed since ancient times. In the long development years of original bamboo buildings, many areas in the world gradually formed unique bamboo buildings, which have become an important local cultural feature. For building structures, joints are the key to ensure structural load transfer.Because of hollow and thin-walled material property of bamboo, the connection in raw bamboo buildings has always been a major difficulty and problem in the application of bamboo, which seriously hinders the development of original bamboo structures. In order to promote the use of raw bamboo, two traditional connection methods in raw bamboo structures are described in this paper firstly, with the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods pointed out. Also, research progress on four categories of raw bamboo building joints is described namely, bolt joints, steel member joints, filler reinforced joints and other types of joints. This work can provide a reference for future research and engineering applications. | Chaokun Hong Haitao Li Rodolfo Lorenzo Gang Wu Ileana Corbi Ottavia Corbi Zhenhua Xiong Dong Yang Huizhong Zhang | 2019 | Journal of Renewable Materials2019,7,8: | 3
Studies on Epoxidised Castor Oil as Co-Plasticizer with Epoxidised Soyabean Oil for PVC Processing显示文摘An acidic cation exchange resin has been used to prepare epoxidised castor oil(ECO)which was used as a co-plasticizer with epoxidised soyabean oil(ESBO)for processing polyvinyl chloride(PVC).The structure of ECO was confirmed and its physico chemical properties were evaluated.PVC/(ESBO&ECO)blends were prepared by melt mixing and compression molded into sheets. The specimens were evaluated for tensile properties, impact strength and hardness. While the tensile strength did not vary much, the elongation reduced with the replacement of ESBO with ECO.Dynamic mechanical studies revealed that the glass transition temperature increased with incorporation of ECO,however, the storage modulus was not altered much.Replacing 20%of ESBO with ECO resulted in blends with desired thermal and mechanical properties without affecting the processability of PVC. | Gouni Thirupathiah Sukanya Satapathy Aruna Palanisamy | 2019 | Journal of Renewable Materials2019,7,8: | 3
Acoustic Emission Characteristics of Different Bamboo and Wood Materials in Bending Failure Process显示文摘The acoustic emission(AE)technique can perform non-destructive monitoring of the internal damage development of bamboo and wood materials. In this experiment, the mechanical properties of different bamboo and wood(bamboo scrimber, bamboo plywood and SPF(Spruce-pine-fir)dimension lumber)during four-point loading tests were compared. The AE activities caused by loadings were investigated through the single parameter analysis and K-means cluster analysis. Results showed that the bending strength of bamboo scrimber was 3.6 times that of bam-boo plywood and 2.7 times that of SPF dimension lumber, respectively.Due to the high strength and toughness of bamboo, the AE signals of the two bamboo products were more abundant than those of SPF dimension lumber. However, the AE evolution trend of the three materials was similar, which all experienced three stages, including gentle period, steady period and steep period, and the area of rupture precursor characteristics could be recognized before the specimen destroyed.Due to the bottom layer was first tensile failure, the main structure of bamboo plywood was destroyed after the stress redistribution. The rupture precursor characteristics could be observed before each peak.Findings put in evidence a good correlation between AE clusters of two bamboo products, while the amplitude and energy of wood signals were lower than those of bamboo. The amplitude and energy from the propagation and aggregation of cracks were greater than those related to micro-cracks initiation. | Ting Wang Zhiqiang Wang Yin Yang Jianhui Zhou | 2022 | Journal of Renewable Materials2022,10,2: | 3
