Plasma electrolytic oxidation of magnesium and its alloys:Mechanism, properties and applications显示文摘Plasma Electrolyte Oxidation(PEO)process has increasingly been employed to improve magnesium surface properties by fabrication of an MgO-based coating.Originating from conventional anodizing procedures, this high-voltage process produces an adhesive ceramic film on the surface. The present article provides a comprehensive review around mechanisms of PEO coatings fabrication and their different properties.Due to complexity of PEO coatings formation,a complete explanation regarding fabrication mechanisms of PEO coatings has not yet been proposed;however, the most important advancements in the field of fabrication mechanisms of PEO coatings were gathered in this work.Mechanisms of PEO coatings fabrication on magnesium were reviewed considering voltage–time plots, optical spectrometry, acoustic emission spectrometry and electronic properties of the ceramic film.Afterwards, the coatings properties, affecting parameters and improvement strategies were discussed. In addition, corrosion resistance of coatings, important factors in corrosion resistance and methods for corrosion resistance improvement were considered.Tribological properties(important factors and improvement methods)of coatings were also studied.Since magnesium and its alloys are broadly used in biological applications, the biological properties of PEO coatings, important factors in their biological performance and existing methods for improvement of coatings were explained.Addition of ceramic based nanoparticles and formation of nanocomposite coatings may considerably influence properties of plasma electrolyte oxidation coatings.Nanocomposite coatings properties and nanoparticles adsorption mechanisms were included in a separate sector.Another method to improve coatings properties is formation of hybrid coatings on PEO coatings which was discussed in the end. | Gh.Barati Darband M.Aliofkhazraei P.Hamghalam N.Valizade | 2017 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2017,5,1: | 48
Recent developments and applications on high-performance cast magnesium rare-earth alloys显示文摘During the past decades, with the increasing demands in lightweight structural materials,Mg alloys with low density and high performance have been extensively investigated and partly applied in some industries.Especially when rare earth(RE)elements are added as major alloying elements to Mg alloys, the alloy strength and creep resistance are greatly improved, which have promoted several series of Mg-RE alloys. This paper reviews the progress and developments of high-performance Mg-RE alloys in recent years with emphasis on cast alloys. The main contents include the alloy design, melt purification, grain refinement, castability, novel liquid casting and semisolid forming approaches, and the industrial applications or trials made of Mg-RE alloys. The review will provide insights for future developments of new alloys, techniques and applications of Mg alloys. | Guohua Wu Cunlong Wang Ming Sun Wenjiang Ding | 2021 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,1: | 35
Review of magnesium-based biomaterials and their applications显示文摘In biomedical applications, the conventionally used metallic materials, including stainless steel,Co-based alloys and Ti alloys, often times exhibit unsatisfactory results such as stress shielding and metal ion releases.Secondary surgical operation(s)usually become inevitable to prevent long term exposure of body with the toxic implant contents. The metallic biomaterials are being revolutionized with the development of biodegradable materials including several metals, alloys, and metallic glasses. As such, the nature of metallic biomaterials are transformed from the bioinert to bioactive and multi-biofunctional(anti-bacterial,anti-proliferation,anti-cancer,etc.).Magnesium-based biomaterials are candidates to be used as new generation biodegradable metals.Magnesium(Mg)can dissolve in body fluid that means the implanted Mg can degrade during healing process, and if the degradation is controlled it would leave no debris after the completion of healing.Hence, the need for secondary surgical operation(s)for the implant removal could be eliminated.Besides its biocompatibility, the inherent mechanical properties of Mg are very similar to those of human bone.Researchers have been working on synthesis and characterization of Mg-based biomaterials with a variety of composition in order to control the degradation rate of Mg since uncontrolled degradation could result in loss of mechanical integrity, metal contamination in the body and intolerable hydrogen evolution by tissue. It was observed that the applied methods of synthesis and the choice of components affect the characteristics and performance of the Mg-based biomaterials.Researchers have synthesized many Mg-based materials through several synthesis routes and investigated their mechanical properties, biocompatibility and degradation behavior through in vitro,in vivo and in silico studies. This paper is a comprehensive review that compiles, analyses and critically discusses the recent literature on the important aspects of Mg-based biomaterials. | Nurettin Sezer Zafer Evis Said Murat Kayhan Aydin Tahmasebifar Muammer Koça | 2018 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2018,6,1: | 38
Advances in coatings on biodegradable magnesium alloys显示文摘The clinic applications of bioabsorbable magnesium(Mg)and its alloys have been significantly restricted owing to their poor corrosion resistance.Besides elemental alloying, surface modification and functionality is a major approach to increasing corrosion resistance for magnesium alloys. This article reviews the cutting-edge advances and progress of biodegradable surface coatings upon Mg alloys over the last decades, aims to build up a knowledge framework of surface modification on biodegradable Mg alloys.A considerable number of conversion, deposition, mechanical and functional coatings and their preparation methods are discussed. The emphasis has been placed on the composition of chemical conversion and deposited coatings to overcome the disadvantages of adhesion, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of a single coating for biomedical materials. The issues have been addressed on the integration of the structural and functional factors of the composite coatings. | Zheng-Zheng Yin Wei-Chen Qi Rong-Chang Zeng Xiao-Bo Chen Chang-Dong Gu Shao-Kang Guan Yu-Feng Zheng | 2020 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2020,8,1: | 33
Towards developing Mg alloys with simultaneously improved strength and corrosion resistance via RE alloying显示文摘Magnesium(Mg)alloys have received an increasing interest in the past two decades for their tremendous application potential. The strength and corrosion resistance levels of common Mg alloys are still relativity low,and especially they are to be improved simultaneously. The addition of rare earth(RE)to Mg alloys is believed to be beneficial for both the strength and corrosion resistance, and some RE-modified traditional Mg alloys have been studied and some new RE-containing Mg alloys have been developed by now. However, further simultaneous improvements in both strength and anti-corrosion require a better understanding of the behavior and mechanism of RE in Mg alloys. In this review, the common influence mechanisms of RE on mechanical and anti-corrosion properties of Mg alloys are summarized, and the latest research progress of RE-containing Mg alloys with simultaneously improved strength and corrosion resistance are introduced. It is demonstrated that the research on high-strength and high corrosion resistant RE-containing Mg alloys is still immature, and some opinions and suggestions are put forward for the synergetic improvement of the strength and corrosion resistance of Mg alloys,so as to contribute to the further development of Mg alloys with higher performance. | Jinshu Xie Jinghuai Zhang Zihao You Shujuan Liu Kai Guan Ruizhi Wu Jun Wang Jing Feng | 2021 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,1: | 25
Fabrication of corrosion-resistant superhydrophobic coating on magnesium alloy by one-step electrodeposition method显示文摘A one-step electrodeposition method was used to construct a superhydrophobic coating on the surface of magnesium alloy.Using magne-sium nitrate and ethanol solution of stearic acid as electrolyte, four groups of electrolytes with different ratios of stearic acid and magnesium nitrate were designed to explore the influence of electrolyte to the process. The contact angles of the four coating samples were 136.4±5.8°,152.7±2.8°,156.2±4.9°and 155.1±4.4°The addition of magnesium nitrate in the solution increased the hydrogen evolution reaction in the electrodeposition process, which was not conducive to electrodeposition process.During the deposition process, the sample prepared in a molar ratio of stearic acid to magnesium nitrate of 10:1 had the best corrosion resistance, and its corrosion circuit density was 3.74×10^(−8)A/cm^(2),far lower than the corrosion current density of the magnesium alloy substrate. | Tianxu Zheng Yaobo Hu Fusheng Pan Yuxin Zhang Aitao Tang | 2019 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2019,7,2: | 26
Design of lightweight magnesium car body structure under crash and vibration constraints显示文摘Car body design in view of structural performance and lightweighting is a challenging task due to all the performance targets that must be satisfied such as vehicle safety and ride quality. In this paper, material replacement along with multidisciplinary design optimization strategy is proposed to develop a lightweight car body structure that satisfies the crash and vibration criteria while minimizing weight.Through finite element simulations, full frontal, offset frontal, and side crashes of a full car model are evaluated for peak acceleration, intrusion distance, and the internal energy absorbed by the structural parts. In addition, the first three fundamental natural frequencies are combined with the crash metrics to form the design constraints. The wall thicknesses of twenty-two parts are considered as the design variables.Latin Hypercube Sampling is used to sample the design space, while Radial Basis Function methodology is used to develop surrogate models for the selected crash responses at multiple sites as well as the first three fundamental natural frequencies.A nonlinear surrogate-based optimization problem is formulated for mass minimization under crash and vibration constraints.Using Sequential Quadratic Programming, the design optimization problem is solved with the results verified by finite element simulations. The performance of the optimum design with magnesium parts shows significant weight reduction and better performance compared to the baseline design. | Morteza Kiani Imtiaz Gandikota Masoud Rais-Rohani Keiichi Motoyama | 2014 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2014,2,2: | 24

Investigation of a novel self-sealing pore micro-arc oxidation film on AM60 magnesium alloy显示文摘Micro-arc oxidation(MAO)is one of the promising methods to improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. However, there are plenty of micro-pores in the traditional MAO films, deteriorating their protection property.A novel self-sealing pore MAO film was developed in this paper. The morphologies and chemical composition of the film were detected by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX).The corrosion behavior was investigated by electrochemical and salt spray tests. The possible film formation and corrosion mechanisms were proposed. The self-sealing pore film presents a blue appearance. Most of the micro-pores in the surface of the film are sealed during the film formation process. The chemical composition of the film mainly contains Mg,O,Ti,F and P.The self-sealing pore film exhibits better corrosion resistance compared with the traditional silicate film.Especially, the self-sealing pore film keeps intact after salt spray test for 2000 h,which can be attributed to its high compactness. | Yingwei Song Kaihui Dong Dayong Shan En-Hou Han | 2013 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2013,1,1: | 23
Enhanced strength and ductility of Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloys by secondary extrusion显示文摘The Mg-12Gd-3Y-0.6Zr(GW123,wt.%)alloy was prepared by cast, and thermo-mechanically treated by single and secondary hot extrusion techniques. The microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the extruded alloy were investigated. The results show that in different treated conditions the microstructure is mainly composed ofα-Mg solid solution and second phases of Mg_(3)Y_(3)Gd_(2) and Mg_(5)(GdY)precipitates.The best mechanical properties are achieved in the secondary extruded alloy after ageing, with the ultimate tensile strength(UTS),tensile yield strength(TYS)and elongation(ɛ)being 446 MPa,350 MPa and 10.2%at room temperature.A weak texture aligned with〈101¯0〉||ED(extrusion direction)component and spread from〈101¯0〉to〈112¯0〉poles was obtained in secondary extrusion, which is caused by the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization(DRX)in shear bands for texture randomization. The fracture modes in extruded GW123 alloy are mixed pattern of transgranular and intergranular fracture,as well as cleavage fracture. The strengthening mechanisms were quantitatively analysed from the different aspects using the measured microstructural parameters. The grain boundaries and solid solution strengthening were the main contributors to the high tensile strength of the GW123 alloy. | X.Li W.Qi K.Zheng N.Zhou | 2013 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2013,1,1: | 21

Active corrosion protection of super-hydrophobic corrosion inhibitor intercalated Mg-Al layered double hydroxide coating on AZ31 magnesium alloy显示文摘Magnesium alloys, the advanced lightweight structural materials, have been successfully applied in the manufacturing field.Unfortunately, their poor corrosion resistance restrains the potential wide applications. In this work,anti-corrosion coatings were fabricated via the insitu growth of the corrosion inhibitors intercalated magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide(Mg-Al LDH)on AZ31 magnesium alloy and then post-sealing it by a super-hydrophobic coating.SEM,XRD,EDS,FTIR,XPS and contact angle test were conducted to analyze physical/chemical features of these coatings.Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were recorded to assess the anti-corrosion performance of prepared coatings.Surprisingly,Mg-Al LDH with molybdate intercalation and lauric acid modification achieves the excellent corrosion inhibition performance(99.99%)due to the multicomponent synergistic effect such as the physical protection of Mg-Al LDH,the corrosion inhibition of molybdate and super-hydrophobic properties of lauric acid. This work presents a scientific perspective and novel design philosophy to fabricate the efficient anti-corrosion coating to protect magnesium alloys and then expand their potential applications in other field. | Xin Wang Chuan Jing Yuxiang Chen Xiushuang Wang Gang Zhao Xing Zhang Liang Wu Xiaoying Liu Biqin Dong Yuxin Zhang | 2020 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2020,8,1: | 20

Effect of Y and Gd content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Y-RE alloys显示文摘In the application of WE43,it is found that Y_(2)O_(3)inclusion formed in the process of casting seriously reduced the mechanical properties of the products. The reduction of the mechanical properties is even more distinct when it comes to the application in the thin walled complex-precision castings. In order to decrease the Y_(2)O_(3)inclusions,Gd element was used to replace part of the Y element in Mg-Y-RE series alloys. The effect of Y content(Mg-x Y-1Gd-2Nd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr)and Y/Gd ratio(Mg-x Y-(5-x)Gd-2Nd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr)on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Y-RE alloys were investigated in this paper. With decreasing Y content, the grain size of the alloys increased, both ultimate tensile strength(UTS)and yield strength(YS)of alloys decreased monotonically.Replacing part of Y content with Gd and keeping the total rare earth content unchanged, the low Y content Mg-2Y-3Gd-2Nd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy showed the same mechanical properties as the high Y content Mg-4Y-1Gd-2Nd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy at both room and elevated temperatures. After solution treatment at 525°C for 8 h and aging treatment at 225°C for 10 h,the UTS,YS and elongation(ε)of Mg-2Y-3Gd-2Nd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy reached 281.7 MPa,198 MPa and 11.1%at room temperature, and 216.7 MPa,171.6 MPa and 16.1%at 250°C.The new low Y content Mg-2Y-2Nd-3Gd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy is expected to replace the high Y content WE43 alloys, which can be used in the complex thin-walled parts of aviation products. | Kang Luo Liang Zhang Guohua Wu Wencai Liu Wenjiang Ding | 2019 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2019,7,2: | 20
