Dynamic and ballistic impact behavior of biocomposite armors made of HDPE reinforced with chonta palm wood(Bactris gasipaes) microparticles显示文摘The mechanical behavior of chonta palm wood(Bactris gasipaes) microparticles reinforced high density polyethylene(HDPE) under high strain-rate compressive and ballistic impact loading were investigated. The palm wood microparticles were introduced into the HDPE via an extrusion process using parallel twin screw extruder to produce biocomposite containing 10, 20, 25, and 30 wt % chonta wood microparticles. In addition to mechanical tests, fractographic analysis was done to understand the failure mechanism in the biocomposites under dynamic and ballistic impact loads. The results indicate that both quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties of HDPE are enhanced by reinforcement with chonta palm wood particles. The biocomposites containing 25 wt % wood microparticles exhibited the highest strength, stiffness, ballistic impact resistance and impact energy absorption capability. Introduction of microparticles of chonta palm wood as reinforcement into a polymeric matrix such as HDPE is therefore a promising method to develop biocomposites with enhanced capacity to withstand dynamic impact loading and absorb impact energy.Edison E.Haro Jerzy A.Szpunar Akindele G.Odeshi 2018Defence Technology(防务技术)2018,14,3:1

Genetic variation and cryptic lineage diversity of the Nigerian red-headed rock agama Agama agama associate with eco-geographic zones显示文摘Nigeria is an Afrotropical region with considerable ecological heterogeneity and levels of biotic endemism.Among its vertebrate fauna, reptiles have broad distributions, thus, they constitute a compelling system for assessing the impact of ecological variation and geographic isolation on species diversification. The red-headed rock agama,Agama agama, lives in a wide range of habitats and, thus,it may show genetic structuring and diversification.Herein,we tested the hypothesis that ecology affects its genetic structure and population divergence.Bayesian inference phylogenetic analysis of a mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)gene recovered four well-supported matrilines with strong evidence of genetic structuring consistent with eco-geographic regions.Genetic differences among populations based on the mtDNA also correlated with geographic distance. The ecologicalniche model for the matrilines had a good fit and robust performance. Population divergence alongthe environmental axes was associated with climatic conditions, and temperature ranked highestamong all environmental variables for forest specialists, while precipitation ranked highest for theforest/derived savanna, and savanna specialists. Our results cannot reject the hypothesis that nicheconservatism promotes geographic isolation of the western populations of Nigerian A. agama. Thus, ecological gradients and geographic isolation impact the genetic structure and population divergenceof the lizards. This species might be facing threats due to recent habitat fragmentation, especially in western Nigeria. Conservation actions appear necessary.Lotanna M.NNEJI Adeniyi C.ADEOLA Fang YAN Agboola O.OKEYOYIN Ojo C.OLADIPO Yohanna SAIDU Dinatu SAMUEL Ifeanyi C.NNEJI Akindele O.ADEYI Abiodun B.ONADEKO Temidayo E.OLAGUNJU Olatunde OMOTOSO Segun O.OLADIPO Oluyinka A.IYIOLA John Y.USONGO Timothy AUTA Abbas D.USMAN Halima ABDULLAHI Odion O.IKHIMIUKOR Wei-Wei ZHOU Jie-Qiong JIN Obih A.UGWUMBA Adiaha A.A.UGWUMBA Min-Sheng PENG Robert W.MURPHY Jing CHE 2019Current Zoology2019,65,6:0
Effects of regenerative mechanical vibration on the mechanical integrity of ceramic diesel particulate filters显示文摘In this study, the effects of mechanical vibration on the mechanical properties of ceramic diesel particulate filters(DPFs) were investigated. The goal is to determine how the mechanical vibration used in the regenerative ash cleaning process for these filters affects their mechanical integrity during subsequent reuse. Both virgin and vibrated DPF samples were subjected to compressive and 3-point flexural loading at three different loading rates along axial and tangential directions. Statistical analysis was conducted to determine the significance of variation in the compressive and flexural strengths of the DPFs as a result of exposure to mechanical vibration. The results show that there is no statistically significant difference in both compressive and flexural strengths of the virgin DPFs and the DPFs subjected to the same level of mechanical vibration typically used in ash cleaning of DPFs. When the intensity of vibration was doubled, the drop in compressive strength became statistically significant, but less than 10% under axial loading. However, no drop in flexural strength was observed for DPFs subjected to this high intensity of mechanical vibration. The safe threshold for mechanical vibration of ceramic filters is considered to be much higher than that currently used in vibration-based ash cleaning process.Gbadebo OWOLABI Akindele ODESHI Paul RAGALLER AlexANDer SAPPOK 2018Journal of Advanced Ceramics2018,7,1:0
Genetic diversity of Mansonia altissima A. Chev. under different regimes of human impact in the Akure Forest Reserve,Nigeria显示文摘Mansonia altissima is an important West African timber tree species. For the purpose of examining the effect of human impact on its genetic diversity, genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure of the species under different regimes of human impact were investigated in the Akure Forest Reserve, Nigeria, using 504 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. The results indicate a very low genetic diversity in M.altissima within the forest reserve (He=0.045; PPL=16.75%; Br=1.162).The highest genetic diversity was observed in the primary forest (He=0.062; PPL=21.00%; Br=1.204), with the lowest genetic diversity in the isolated forest patch (He=0.032; PPL=9.00%; Br=1.089).A significant and pronounced spatial genetic structure was found in the logged forest and in the isolated forest patch. In contrast, the primary forest exhibited very weak spatial genetic structuring. As expected, no spatial genetic structure was found in the planted stands of M.altissima.From a conservation point of view, our results suggest that genetic diversity of M.altissima is at risk in the forest reserve. The scale of human impact in the study area could pose a serious threat to the maintenance of genetic diversity of the species. These results would offer practical applications in the conservation of other tropical tree species.Akindele AKINNAGBE Oliver GAILING Reiner FINKELDEY 2010Forestry Studies in China2010,12,4:0
Evaluation of biogas production from co-digestion of pig dung, water hyacinth and poultry droppings显示文摘In this study, biogas production from co-digestion of pig dung, water hyacinth, and poultry droppings was investigated.500 ml bio-digesters were connected in series and water displacement method was used to estimate the amount of biogas produced. The ratio of the percentage weight distribution of pig dung to water hyacinth to poultry dropping was varied as:(0:40:60),(30:40:30),(15:40:45),(45:40:15),and(60:40:0)in digesters A1,B2,C3,D4 and E5,respectively.The highest biogas cumulative yield of 307 cm^(3) CH_(4)/g was obtained in Digester C3.The gas chromatography analysis showed 22.50 wt%(CO_(2)),64.92 wt%(CH_(4))and 4.83 wt%(N_(2))which implied that the biogas produced can be used for cooking and heating of homes in rural and urban communities.Akindele O.Okewale Olusola A.Adesina 2019Waste Disposal and Sustainable Energy2019,1,4:0
