The global significance of biodiversity science in China: an overview显示文摘Biodiversity science in China has seen rapid growth over recent decades, ranging from baseline biodiversity studies to understanding the processes behind evolution across dynamic regions such as the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We review research, including species catalogues;biodiversity monitoring;the origins, distributions, maintenance and threats to biodiversity;biodiversity-related ecosystem function and services;and species and ecosystems'responses to global change.Next,we identify priority topics and offer suggestions and priorities for future biodiversity research in China. These priorities include(i)the ecology and biogeography of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and surrounding mountains, and that of subtropical and tropical forests across China;(ii)marine and inland aquatic biodiversity;and(iii)effective conservation and management to identify and maintain synergies between biodiversity and socio-economic development to fulfil China's vision for becoming an ecological civilization. In addition,we propose three future strategies:(i)translate advanced biodiversity science into practice for biodiversity conservation;(ii)strengthen capacity building and application of advanced technologies, including high-throughput sequencing, genomics and remote sensing;and(iii)strengthen and expand international collaborations.Based on the recent rapid progress of biodiversity research,China is well positioned to become a global leader in biodiversity research in the near future. | Xiangcheng Mi Gang Feng Yibo Hu Jian Zhang Lei Chen Richard T.Corlett Alice C.Hughes Stuart Pimm Bernhard Schmid Suhua Shi Jens-Christian Svenning Keping Ma | 2021 | National Science Review2021,8,7: | 16
Six steps for building a technological knowledge base for future taxonomic work显示文摘Species are the principal category we use to study, understand, and conserve the natural world,so how we define species has a cascading impact across fields, well beyond biology[1].Despite such importance, debate on species concepts continues to this day([2]2020),with consequences for what organisms we recognize, study and protect.Given the wealth of life forms on our planet. | Michael C.Orr Anderson Feijó Douglas Chesters Alfried P.Vogler Silas Bossert Rafael R.Ferrari Mark John Costello Alice C.Hughes Lars Krogmann John S.Ascher Xin Zhou De-Zhu Li Ming Bai Jun Chen Deyan Ge Arong Luo Gexia Qiao Paul H.Williams Ai-bing Zhang Keping Ma Feng Zhang Chao-Dong Zhu | 2022 | National Science Review2022,9,12: | 1
A solution scan of societal options to reduce transmission and spread of respiratory viruses:SARS-CoV-2 as a case study显示文摘Societal biosecurity–measures built into everyday society to minimize risks from pests and diseases–is an important aspect of managing epidemics and pandemics. We aimed to identify societal options for reducing the transmission and spread of respiratory viruses. We used SARS-CoV-2(severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2)as a case study to meet the immediate need to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually transition to more normal societal conditions, and to catalog options for managing similar pandemics in the future. We used a‘solution scanning’approach. We read the literature;consulted psychology, public health, medical, and solution scanning experts;crowd-sourced options using social media;and collated comments on a preprint. Here,we present a list of 519 possible measures to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission and spread. We provide a long list of options for policymakers and businesses to consider when designing biosecurity plans to combat SARS-CoV-2 and similar pathogens in the future. We also developed an online application to help with this process. We encourage testing of actions, documentation of outcomes, revisions to the current list, and the addition of further options. | William J.Sutherland Nigel G.Taylor David C.Aldridge Philip Martin Catherine Rhodes Gorm Shackelford Simon Beard Haydn Belfield Andrew J.Bladon Cameron Brick Alec P.Christie Andrew P.Dobson Harriet Downey Amelia S.C.Hood Fangyuan Hua Alice C.Hughes Rebecca M.Jarvis Douglas MacFarlane William H.Morgan Anne-ChristineMupepele Stefan J.Marciniak Cassidy Nelson SeánÓhÉigeartaigh Clarissa Rios Rojas Katherine A.Sainsbury Rebecca K.Smith Lalitha S.Sundaram Ann Thornton John Watkins Thomas B.White Kate Willott Silviu O.Petrovan | 2021 | Journal of Biosafety and Biosecurity2021,3,2: | 0
Description of two new species of Hemiphyllodactylus(Reptilia: Gekkonidae) from karst landscapes in Yunnan, China, highlights complex conservation needs显示文摘Karst habitats are hotspots of diversity and endemism. Their naturally fragmented distributions across broad geographic landscapes have led to the complex array of smaller evolutionary ecosystems that present unique challenges from a conservation perspective.Comprehensivebiodiversity assessments of karst habitats have revealed that these ecosystems contain an almost unparalleled level of endemism, and many site-restricted species remain undescribed, thus posing considerable challenges for effective conservation management.Small rock-dwelling species, such as geckos, may be particularly prone to such isolation. In this paper, we discuss one such genus, i.e.,Hemiphyllodactylus, and explore its diversity across karst landforms in Yunnan Province, southwestern China. Based on morphological and genetic data, we describe two new species of Hemiphyllodactylus from karst habitats in Simao District and Yanshan County. A phylogenetic tree for Hemiphyllodactylus was constructed using 1?039 base pairs(bp) of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene(ND2). The Simao and Yanshan specimens can be distinguished from all other congeners within their respective subclades based on uncorrected genetic pairwise distances greater than 6.3% and 4.3%respectively, as well as significant morphological differences. The discovery and description of these two new species brings the total number of described Hemiphyllodactylus species in China to 14and indicates many more undescribed species from unsurveyed karst regions await discovery. Our findings suggest that karst ecosystems in Yunnan support a higher diversity of Hemiphyllodactylus than previously known. This study also highlights the importance of karst ecosystems as refugia for sitespecific endemic species and the need for heightened conservation efforts. | Ade Prasetyo Agung Ada Chornelia L.Lee Grismer Jesse L.Grismer Evan S.H.Quah Jian-Mei Lu Kyle W.Tomlinson Alice C.Hughes | 2022 | Zoological Research2022,43,5: | 0
Tracing the origins of SARS-CoV-2:lessons learned from the past显示文摘The origins of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)remain elusive;understanding how, when, and where SARS-CoV-2 was transmitted from its natural reservoir to human beings is crucial for preventing future coronavirus outbreaks. With the lessons learned from the endless battle against pathogens and accumulated research data with regard to the origins and intermediate hosts,we present multiple potential locations as the natural reservoirs of SARS-CoV-2. | Qihui Wang Hua Chen Yi Shi Alice C.Hughes William J.Liu Jingkun Jiang George F.Gao Yongbiao Xue Yigang Tong | 2021 | Cell Research2021,31,11: | 0
Phenotypic traits evolution and morphological traits associated with echolocation calls in cryptic horseshoe bats(Rhinolophidae)显示文摘Bats provide an excellent casestudy for studying evolution due to their remarkable flight and echolocation capabilities. In this study,we sought to understand the phenotypic evolution of key traits in Rhinolophidae(horseshoe bats)using phylogenetic comparative methods. We aimed to test the phylogenetic signals of traits, and evaluated the best-fit evolutionary models given the data for each trait considering different traits may evolve under different models(i.e.,Brownian Motion[BM],Ornstein-Uhlenbeck[OU],and Early Burst[EB])and reconstruct ancestral character states. We examined how phenotypic characters are associated with echolocation calls and minimum detectable prey size.We measured 34 traits of 10 Asian rhinolophids species(187 individuals). We found that the majority of traits showed a high phylogenetic signal based on Blomberg′s K and Pagel′sλ,but each trait may evolve under different evolutionary models.Sella traits were shown to evolve under stabilizing selection based on OU models, indicating sella traits have the tendency to move forward along the branches toward some medial value in equilibrium. Our findings highlight the importance of sella characters in association with echolocation call emissions in Rhinolophidae,as calls are important for spatial cognition and also influence dietary preferences.Minimum detectable prey size in Rhinolophidae was associated with call frequency, bandwidth, call duration, wingspan, and wing surface area.Ultimately, understanding trait evolution requires sensitivity due to the differential selective pressures which may apply to different characteristics. | Ada Chornelia Alice C.Hughes | 2023 | Journal of Systematics and Evolution2023,61,4: | 0
BIODIVERSITY IN THE KARST REGION OF SOUTHEAST ASIA AND ITS CONSERVATION:The forgotten limestone ecosystems of Southeast Asia显示文摘When we think about biodiversity in Southeast Asia,we generally think about the verdant forests. However, one special part of the S outheast Asian landscape is frequently forgotten:the limestone hills that make up around 800,000 square kilometers of Southeast Asia and host a suite of rare and endemic species unable to survive anywhere else. | Alice C.Hughes | 2020 | China Report ASEAN2020,5,8: | 0
