| 1 | Statin use and risk of diabetes mellitus显示文摘The 3-hydroxy-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, statins, are widely used in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases to lower serum cholesterol levels. As type 2 diabetes mellitus is accompanied by dyslipidemia, statins have a major role in preventing the long term complications in diabetes and are recommended for diabetics with normal low density lipoprotein levels as well. In 2012, United States Food and Drug Administration released changes to statin safety label to include that statins have been found to increase glycosylated haemoglobin and fasting serum glucose levels. Many studies done on patients with cardiovascular risk factors have shown that statins have diabetogenic potential and the effect varies as per the dosage and type used. The various mechanisms for this effect have been proposed and one of them is downregulation of glucose transporters by the statins. The recommendations by the investigators are that though statins can have diabetogenic risk, they have more long term benefits which can outweigh the risk. In elderly patients and those with metabolic syndrome, as the risk of diabetes increase, the statins should be used cautiously. | 3 | Carcinogenic Helicobacter pylori in gastric pre-cancer and cancer lesions: Association with tobacco-chewing显示文摘AIM:To investigate the low gastric cancer incidence rate relative to the highly prevalent Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)infection;data relevant to H.pylori infection during gastric carcinogenesis in Indian patients is currently lacking.METHODS:The present study examines the prevalence of H.pylori infection in DNA derived from 156endoscopic gastric biopsies of different disease groups that represent gastric pre-cancer[intestinal metaplasia(n=15),dysplasia(n=15)],cancer[diffuse adenocarcinoma(n=44),intestinal adenocarcinoma(n=21)],and symptomatic but histopathologically-normal controls(n=61).This was done by generic ureC polymerase chain reaction(PCR)and cagA-specific PCR that could specifically identify the carcinogenic H.pylori strain.RESULTS:Our analysis showed the presence of H.pylori infection in 61%of symptomatic histopathologically-normal individuals,however only 34%of control tissues were harboring the cagA+H.pylori strain.A similar proportion of H.pylori infection(52%)and cagA(26%)positivity was observed in the tumor tissue of the gastric cancer group.In comparison,H.pylori infection(90%)and cagA positivity(73%)were the highest in gastric pre-cancer lesions.In relation to tobacco and alcohol abuse,H.pylori infection showed an association with tobacco chewing,whereas we did not observe any association between tobacco smoking or alcohol abuse with prevalence of H.pylori infection in the tissue of any of the patient groups studied.CONCLUSION:High incidence of H.pylori infection and carcinogenic cagA positive strain in pre-cancer lesions during gastric carcinogenesis may be | Arvind Pandey Satyendra Chandra Tripathi Sutapa Mahata Kanchan Vishnoi Shirish Shukla Sri Prakash Misra Vatsala Misra Suresh Hedau Ravi Mehrotra Manisha DwivediZ Alok C Bharti | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014，20，22： | 4 |
| 4 | Correlations between ultrasonic pulse wave velocities and rock properties of quartz-mica schist显示文摘Physico-mechanical properties are critically important parameters for rocks. This study aims to examine some of the rock properties of quartz-mica schist(QMS) rocks in a cost-effective manner by establishing correlations between non-destructive and destructive tests. Using simple regression analysis, good correlations were obtained between the pulse wave velocities and the properties of QMS rocks. The results were further improved by using multiple regression analysis as compared to those obtained by the simple linear regression analysis. The results were also compared to the ones obtained by other empirical equations available. The general equations encompassing all types of rocks did not give reliable results of rock properties and showed large relative errors, ranging from 23% to 1146%. It is suggested that empirical correlations must be investigated separately for different types of rocks. | 8 | Study of cyanide removal from contaminated water using zinc peroxide nanomaterial显示文摘The present study highlights the potential application of zinc peroxide(ZnO_2)nanomaterial as an efficient material for the decontamination of cyanide from contaminated water. A process patent for ZnO_2 synthesis has been granted in United States of America(US Patent number 8,715,612; May 2014),South Africa,Bangladesh,and India. The ZnO_2 nanomaterial was capped with polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)to control the particle size. The PVP capped ZnO_2nanomaterial(PVP-ZnO_2)before and after adsorption of cyanide was characterized by scanning electron microscope,transmission electron microscope,X-ray diffractometer,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry. The remaining concentration of cyanide after adsorption by PVP-ZnO_2 was determined using ion chromatograph. The adsorption of cyanide over PVP-ZnO_2 was also studied as a function of p H,adsorbent dose,time and concentration of cyanide. The maximum removal of cyanide was observed in p H range 5.8–7.8 within 15 min. The adsorption data was fitted to Langmuir and Fruendlich isotherm and it has been observed that data follows both the isotherms and also follows second order kinetics. | Himani Uppal S.
