Skeletochronological Study of Age,Longevity and Growth in a Population of Rana nigromaculata(Amphibia:Anura) in Sichuan,China显示文摘A skeletochronological study was conducted for the age, longevity and growth of a Rana nigromaculata population in northeastern Sichuan, China. Of 139 specimens, 119(68 males and 51 females) exhibited distinct arrested growth lines in phalanges. Age at first reproduction was found to be two years of age for males and three for females. Maximum longevity was estimated to be at least six years in males and seven years in females. Average age did not differ between males and females. Breeding females were significantly older than breeding males. Females were larger in body size and heavier in body mass than males. Age was not correlated with body size and body mass in males, but a significant correlation was found among age, body size and body mass in females. The growth curve appeared significantly different between the sexes, with a higher growth rate throughout life and a larger asymptotic size in females. Moreover, analysis of the growth model indicated that the population studied was relatively stable.Min MAO Yan HUANG Zhiping MI Yanhong LIU Caiquan ZHOU 2012Asian Herpetological Research2012,3,3:3
Asymmetry of Testes in Guenther's Frog,Hylarana guentheri(Anuar:Ranidae)显示文摘Testes size in most animals commonly shows directional asymmetry. In birds, the left testis mass is usually larger than the right one,but the reports on the testes asymmetry in anurans are very few.M?ller(1994)hypothesized that the right testis serves a compensatory role and increases in size when the left one is defective, and further suggested that testes asymmetry may be a reliable indicator of individual body condition. In this paper,we tested the compensation hypothesis in the Guenther's frog,Hylarana guentheri. From 60 sampled males,we found that there was a signifi cant directional asymmetry in testes mass, with the left testis size being significantly correlated with relative testes asymmetry, providing evidence that the right testis had a compensatory function. However, testes mass and asymmetry were not correlated with body condition.Hence,we found no evidence that testes asymmetry in the Guenther's frog ref lected male condition, and male age was also not related to testes mass or asymmetry.Yanhong LIU Wenbo LIAO Caiquan ZHOU Zhiping MI Min MAO 2011Asian Herpetological Research2011,2,4:3
Seasonal variations in the plant diet of the Chinese Monal revealed by fecal DNA metabarcoding analysis显示文摘The Chinese Monal(Lophophorus thuysii)is an alpine-obligate galliform species of global conservation priority. It has been listed as a first class protected wildlife species in China, requiring conservation actions during the 14 th Five-Year Plan period. However, the diet composition of Chinese Monal and its seasonal variations have rarely been studied, constraining the effective conservation of the species. Here,we investigated the plant diet composition of the Chinese Monal and its seasonal variations using a DNA metabarcoding approach on fecal samples. We collected 190 fecal samples of the Chinese Monals from the central Qionglai Mountains located in China, and analyzed the plant diet of this species using a DNA metabarcoding approach.Taxonomic profiling of higher plants in the fecal samples was performed using the second internal transcribed spacer(ITS2)amplicon.Downstream analyses, including rarefaction curves, nonmetric multidimensional scaling(NMDS)and permutational multivariate analysis of variance(PERMANOVA),were used to explore the seasonal variations in diet composition. The Chinese Monal foraged a wide range of plant recipes composed of 35 families and 83 genera throughout the year, with Brassicaceae,Apiaceae, and Poaceae as the dominant families, and Cardamine as the dominant genus. The species consumed plants from 62 genera from 28 families during the breeding season(n=81)and 66 genera from 31 families during the non-breeding season(n=109).Further,the plant diet composition significantly varied between the breeding and non-breeding seasons, especially for the frequency of occurrence and relative read abundances at genus level. Our study analyzed the plant diet of the Chinese Monal at a high resolution for the first time, and the results revealed that the seasonal variations in its plant diet composition was adapted to plant phenology and foraging strategy.Fritillaria species,a previously confirmed important food resource for the Chinese Monal, were not detected in any fecal samples, potentially due to overharvesting of Fritillaria bulbs for Traditional Chinese Medicine. Therefore,we highly recommend further restriction of herb gathering in Chinese Monal habitats to facilitate the conservation of this endangered species.Altogether, our study enriches essential ecological information for the Chinese Monal and also provides insights into conservation management for this endangered species.Bin Wang Yun Li Guiquan Zhang Jian Yang Cao Deng Haoyu Hu Long Zhang Xiaoqin Xu Caiquan Zhou 2022Avian Research2022,13,2:2

Integrative taxonomy helps to reveal the mask of the genus Gynandropaa (Amphibia: Anura: Dicroglossidae)显示文摘Species of the genus Gynandropaa within the family Dicroglossidae are typical spiny frogs whose taxonomic status has long been in doubt. We used integrative methods, involving morphological and molecular analyses,to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships, and to determine identities and the geographic distribution of each valid species. We obtained DNA sequence data of 5 species of Gynandropaa(complete sequences of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2[ND2]gene,and 890 bp of 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA partial sequences)from 37 localities(including the topotypes of 5 described species)and constructed Bayesian and maximum-likelihood trees to examine the patterns of phylogeography.A total of 28 morphological variables were taken on 624 specimens.Three clades with clear geographic patterns were recognized:clade C(from south-western Sichuan Province and central Yunnan Province),clade E(western Guizhou Province and eastern to central Yunnan Province)and clade W(western to southern Yunnan Province).Integrating morphological characteristics and distribution information, the clades W,E and C represent Gynandropaa yunnanensis,G.phrynoides and G.sichuanensis,respectively.We draw the following conclusions:(i)the taxon G.phrynoides, formerly evaluated as a junior synonym of G.yunnanensis,is revalidated herein at the rank of species;(ii)G.liui is a junior synonym of G.sichuanensis;and(iii)G.yunnanensis is a valid species while G.bourreti is probably a subspecies of G.yunnanensis, with the distribution range from Vietnam to southern Yunnan Province. This study clears up the taxonomic status of Gynandropaa and provides important information for understanding the evolution and conservation of these spiny frogs.Yan HUANG Junhua HU Bin WANG Zhaobin SONG Caiquan ZHOU Jianping JIANG 2016Integrative Zoology2016,11,2:1

The validity of different zokor species and the genus Eospalax inferredfrom mitochondrial gene sequences显示文摘To help resolve the systematic position of Myospalacine(zokors)and to clarify the phylogenetic relationships among zokor species, complete mitochondrial 12S rRNA and cytochrome b gene sequences were determined for seven zokor species from China.Phylogenetic relationships among all extant zokors, except the Siberian zokor(Myospalax myospalax)and Smith’s zokor(Eospalax smithi),were reconstructed with the Chinese bamboo rat(Rhizomys sinensis)as an outgroup. Our results support the generic status of Eospalax and also support the validity of the specific status of Eospalax cansus,Eospalax baileyi and Eospalax rufescens.Caiquan ZHOU Kaiya ZHOU 2008Integrative Zoology2008,3,4:0
