| 1 | Bulking sludge for PHA production:Energy saving and comparative storage capacity with well-settled sludge显示文摘Two acetate-fed sequencing batch reactors(SBR) were operated under an aerobic dynamic feeding(ADF) model(SBR #2) and with anaerobic phase before aerobic phase(SBR #1) to select mixed cultures with a high polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) storage response.Although kinetic selection based on storage response should bring about a predominance of floc-formers,a bulking sludge with storage response comparable to well-settled sludge was steadily established.An anaerobic phase was introduced before the aerobic phase in the ADF model to improve the sludge settleability(SBR #1),however,due to the consequent increased feast/famine ratio,the performance of SBR #1,in terms of both the maximum PHB(polyhydroxybutyrate) cell content and PHB,was lower than that of SBR #2.SBR #2 gradually reached a steady state while SBR #1 failed suddenly after 50 days of operation.The maximum specific substrate uptake rate and storage rate for the selected bulking sludge were 0.4 Cmol Ac/(Cmol X·hr) and 0.18 Cmol Ac/(Cmol PHB·hr),respectively,resulting a yield of 0.45 Cmol PHB/(Cmol Ac) in SBR #2 in the culture enrichment phase.A maximum PHB content of 53% of total suspended solids and PHB storage rate of 1.36 Cmol Ac/(Cmol PHB·hr) was achieved at 10.2 hr in batch accumulation tests under nitrogen starvation.The results indicated that it was feasible to utilize filamentous bacteria to accumulate PHA with a rate comparable to well-settled sludge.Furthermore,the lower dissolved oxygen demand of filamentous bacteria would save energy required for aeration in the culture enrichment stage. | Qinxue Wen Zhiqiang Chen Changyong Wang Nanqi Ren | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,10: | 15 |
| 2 | Effect of aeration rate on composting of penicillin mycelial dreg显示文摘Pilot scale experiments with forced aeration were conducted to estimate effects of aeration rates on the performance of composting penicillin mycelial dreg using sewage sludge as inoculation. Three aeration rates of 0.15, 0.50 and 0.90 L/(min·kg) organic matter(OM) were examined. The principal physicochemical parameters were monitored during the 32 day composting period. Results showed that the higher aeration rate of 0.90 L/(min·kg) did not corresponded to a longer thermophilic duration and higher rates of OM degradation;but the lower aeration rate of 0.15 L/(min·kg) did induce an accumulation of NH+4-N contents due to the inhibition of nitrification. On the other hand, aeration rate has little effect on degradation of penicillin. The results show that the longest phase of thermophilic temperatures ≥ 55°C, the maximum NO-3-N content and seed germination, and the minimum C/N ratio were obtained with 0.50 L/(min·kg) OM. | 4 | Spatial and Temporal Changes of Floating Population in China Between 1990 and 2000显示文摘By studying the county-level census data of 1990 and 2000, we analyzed the spatial and temporal changes in the floating population in China between 1990 and 2000. The results of the analysis revealed the following characteris- tics. First, the spatial distribution of the migrants (referred to as 'floaters' in this paper) became increasingly concentrated in the cities during the 1990s. Second, the number of floaters increased rapidly during this period, and the area in which the floaters settled expanded quickly into four population explosion belts: the coast, the Changjiang River Delta, the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and national border belts. Third, the number of inter-province floaters increased rapidly and exceeded that of intra-province floaters in the 1990s. In addition, to obtain a quantitative relationship between the number of floaters and 10 socio-economic variables by using statistical methods and also to find the chiefly important pulling factors of the migration destination, the authors selected approximately 100 cities with the largest population of floaters. Consequently, we found that four factors-GDP, passenger trips per 10,000 persons, per capita GDP and foreign direct investment-could provide an explanation for 83.7% of the number of floaters in 2000. The GDP showed the highest correlation with the number of floaters, suggesting that a highly developed economy is the most important factor that attracts floaters. | 5 | Mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion of swine manure with sulfamethoxazole and norfloxacin:Dynamics of microbial communities and evolution of resistance genes显示文摘The role of norfloxacin(NOR)and sulfamethoxazole(SMX)in mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion(AD)of pig manure,with respect to methane production and variations in the microbial community and resistance genes,including antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs),class I integrase(intIl),and heavy metal resistance genes(MRGs),was investigated.The results indicated that NOR exerted little influence on the microbial community,whereas SMX negatively affected the acetoclastic methanogens.The abundance of two sulfonamide resistance genes(sul1 and sul2),three quinolone resistance genes(qnrS,parC,and aac(6′)-Ib-cr),and intI1 decreased by 2–3 orders of magnitude at the end of thermophilic AD.In contrast,mesophilic AD was generally ineffective in reducing the abundance of resistance genes.According to the results of redundancy analysis,the abundance of ARGs was affected primarily by microbial community dynamics(68.5%),rather than the selective pressure due to antibiotic addition(13.3%).Horizontal gene transfer(HGT)through intI1 contributed to 26.4%of the ARG variation.The archaeal community also influenced the changes in the resistance genes,and ARG reduction was significantly correlated with enhanced methane production.Thermophilic AD presented a higher methane production potential and greater reduction in resistance gene abundance. | Qinxue Wen Shuo Yang Zhiqiang Chen | 2021 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2021,15,5: | 2 |
| 6 | Effects of sludge retention time,carbon and initial biomass concentrations on selection process:From activated sludge to polyhydroxyalkanoate accumulating cultures显示文摘Four sequence batch reactors(SBRs) fed by fermented sugar cane wastewater were continuously operated under the aerobic dynamic feeding(ADF) mode with different configurations of sludge retention time(SRT), carbon and initial biomass concentrations to enrich polyhydroxyalkanoate(PHA) accumulating mixed microbial cultures(MMCs) from municipal activated sludge.The stability of SBRs was investigated besides the enrichment performance. The microbial community structures of the enriched MMCs were analyzed using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism(T-RFLP). The optimum operating conditions for the enrichment process were: SRT of 5 days, carbon concentration of 2.52 g COD/L and initial biomass concentration of3.65 g/L. The best enrichment performance in terms of both operating stability and PHA storage ability of enriched cultures(with the maximum PHA content and PHA storage yield(YPHA/S) of61.26% and 0.68 mg COD/mg COD, respectively) was achieved under this condition. Effects of the SRT, carbon concentration and initial biomass concentration on the PHA accumulating MMCs selection process were discussed respectively. | 7 | Reconsideration on the effect of nitrogen on mixed culture polyhydroxyaIkanoate production toward high organic loading enrichment history显示文摘In most of the operating strategies for mixed microbial cultures polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production, moderate organic loads and low nitrogen concentrations are used, however, the real waste streams contain variable concentrations of carbon and nitrogen. To evaluate the effect of enrichment history on PHA producer and production the various carbon and nitrogen levels were utilized during the accumulation phase. Different operating strategies were applied in three sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) subjected to aerobic dynamic feeding. The maximum PHA production of the enriched cultures under nutrient excess, limitation and starvation (Cmol/Nmol ratio of & 40 and oo, respectively) was evaluated in batch assays. A higher PHA content and biomass growth were achieved in the nutrients presence in comparison to the nutrient starvation condition. The cultures from the SBR treated under short sludge retention time, high organic loading rate, short cycle length (SBR#3) and nutrient excess reached the maximum PHA content (54.9%) and biomass increase (38.9%). Under nutrient limitation, the negative biomass growth was observed under nutrient starvation because of the sampling loss. The succession of microbial communities in SBRs and batch assays was analyzed using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism. | 8 | Preparation and characterization of a lipoid adsorption material and its atrazine removal performance显示文摘A novel adsorbent named lipoid adsorption material (LAM), with a hydrophobic nucleolus (triolein) and a hydrophilic membrane structure (polyamide), was synthesized to remove hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) from solution. Triolein, a type of lipoid, was entrapped by the polyamide membrane through an interfacial polymerization reaction. The method of preparation and the structure of the LAM were investigated and subsequent experiments were conducted to determine the characteristics of atrazine (a type of HOC) removal from wastewater using LAM as the adsorbent. The results showed that LAM had a regular structure compared with the prepolymer, where compact particles were linked with each other and openings were present in the structure of the LAM in which the fat drops formed from triolein were entrapped. In contrast to the atrazine adsorption behavior of powdered activated carbon (PAC), LAM showed a persistent adsorption capacity for atrazine when initial concentrations of 0.57, 1.12, 8.31 and 19.01 mg/L were present, and the equilibrium time was 12 hr. Using an 8 mg/L initial concentration of atrazine as an indicator of HOCs in aqueous solution, experiments on the adsorption capacity of the LAM showed 69.3% removal within 6-12 hr contact time, which was close to the 75.5% removal of atrazine by PAC. Results indicated that LAM has two atrazine removal mechanisms, namely the bioaccumulation of atrazine by the nucleous material and physical adsorption to the LAM membrane. | 9 | Impacts of advanced treatment processes on elimination of antibiotic resistance genes in a municipal waste water treatment plant显示文摘Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pose a serious threat to public health. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are essential for controlling the release of ARGs into the environment. This study investigated ARG distribution at every step in the treatment process of a municipal WWTP located in Harbin for six consecutive months. Changes in ARG distribution involved in two advanced secondary effluent treatment processes, ozonation and granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption, were analyzed. Biological treatment resulted in the highest ARG removal (0.76-1.94 log reduction), followed by ultraviolet (UV) disinfection (less than 0.5-log reduction). Primary treatment could not significantly remove ARGs. ARG removal efficiency increased with an increase in the ozone dose below 40 mg/L. However, amorphous GAC (AGAC) adsorption with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 h showed better removal of ARGs, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) than ozonation at a 60 mg/L dose. UV treatment could efficiently reduce the relative ARG abundance, despite presenting the lowest efficiency for the reduction of absolute ARG abundance compared with GAC and ozone treatments. The combination of ozone and AGAC can significantly improve the removal of ARGs, TOC, TN and TP.
