| 2 | Low prevalence of epilepsy and onchocerciasis after more than 20 years of ivermectin treatment in the Imo River Basin in Nigeria显示文摘Background:High epilepsy prevalence and incidence have been reported in areas with high onchocerciasis transmission.Recent findings suggest that proper community-directed treatment with ivermectin(CDTI)is potentially able to prevent onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy(OAE).We assessed the epilepsy prevalence and onchocerciasis transmission in two Nigerian villages following more than 20 years of CDTI.Methods:A cross-sectional door-to-door survey was performed in two villages in the Imo River Basin reported to be mesoendomic for onchocerciasis(Umuoparaodu and Umuezeala).Individuals were screened for epilepsy using a validated 5-item questionnaire.Persons suspected to have epilepsy were examined by a neurologist or a physician with training in epilepsy for confirmation.Onchocerciasis was investigated via skin snip microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests for Ov16 antibodies. Results were compared with previous findings from the Imo river basin. Results:A total of 843 individuals from 257 households in the two villages were encountered. We detected four persons with epilepsy(PWE)giving a crude epilepsy prevalence of 0.5%.This finding differs from observations reported 14 years ago which showed an epilepsy prevalence of 2.8%in the neighbouring village of Umulolo(P=0.0001),and 1.2%from 13 villages in the Imo river basin(P=0.07).The seroprevalence of Ov16 antibodies was found to be 0%.Only 4.6%of skin snips were positive compared to 26.8%in previous surveys(P<0.0001).Ivermectin mass distribution coverage in the study sites in 2017 was 79.7%.Conclusions:A low epilepsy and onchocerciasis prevalence was observed following more than 20 years of CDTI in the Imo River Basin.Absence of Ov16 antibodies indicates minimal transmission of onchocerciasis. These results contrast with observations from areas of high onchocerciasis transmission, where epilepsy prevalence and incidence remain high.Findings from this study suggest that sustained efforts could eventually achieve elimination of onchocerciasis in these villages. | Joseph N.F.Siewe Chinyere N.Ukaga Ernest O.Nwazor Murphy O.Nwoke Modebelu C.Nwokeji Blessing C.Onuoha Simon O.Nwanjor Joel Okeke Kate Osahor Lilian Chimechefulam Ann I.Ogomaka Augustine A.Amaechi Chika I.Ezenwa Monika N.Ezike Chidimma I.kpeama Ogechi Nwachukwu Austine I.Eriama-Joseph Berthram E.B.Nwoke Robert Colebunders | 2019 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2019,8,1: | 2 |

| 9 | Effect of Roasting and Germination on Proximate, Micronutrient and Amino Acid Profile of Breadnut Seed (Artocarpus camansi) Flours显示文摘The proximate, micronutrient and amino acid profile of roasted and germinated breadnut seed flour were evaluated. Fresh mature fruits (1.5 kg) of breadnut were purchased from Relief market in Imo State, Nigeria. The breadnut seeds were divided into three portions for different unit operations, namely raw, roasted and germinated. Samples were analyzed for proximate, minerals and amino acids compositions. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Protein (13.80%) and fat (7.90%) content were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in germinated breadnut seeds;fibre (2.20%) and ash (7.20%) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in roasted breadnut seed while carbohydrate (75.85%) and moisture (11.05%) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in raw breadnut. Micronutrient composition shows that iron (74.35 mg/100g) was higher in roasted breadnut seed, phosphorous (12.95 mg/100g) and zinc (30.4 mg/100g) were higher in germinated breadnut seed flour while calcium (0.04%), magnesium (0.05%), vitamin A (0.27%) and vitamin C (0.85%) were higher in raw breadnut. All the essential amino acids except norleucine were present in the breadnut in varying quantities. Between roasting and germination, essential acids;valine < histidine < isoleucine < thronine < tryptophan were more in germinated breadnut seeds while leucine < lysine < phenylalanine < methionine were higher in roasted breadnut seed flour. The use of roasting and germination should be used in processing breadnut seeds. The use of breadnut seed flours as composite flour in food production may help to provide protein and micronutrient among the vulnerable groups. | Joy A. C. Amadi Austin Ihemeje Chinyere P. | 10 | Effects of Carboxymethylcelluloses (CMC) on Some Hydraulic Properties of Sandy Soil显示文摘The property of hydrophilic polymers capable absorbing huge volumes of water led to many practical applications of these new materials in arid regions for improving the water retention in sandy soils. Effects of four carboxymethylcelluloses (CMC), mixed at various rates with the sandy soil, on the water-holding capacity and hydraulic conductivity (KS ) when leached with distilled water (simulating rain), tap water, and saline water were evaluated. The maximum water absorption of CMCs ranged between 80 and 100 kg ? kg-1 of polymer; however, the absorbent swelling capacity decreased significantly with increasing the salt concentration in the solution. The water absorption capacity of CMCs decreased significantly when incorporated in the sandy soil compared to that of the absorbent alone. Application of CMC increased significantly the available water content up to 3 ± 0.5 times. All soils treated with CMCs showed a significant lower in KS compared to the control soil. Meanwhile, KS was found increased with increasing the salt concentration in the leaching solution. This understanding of characteristics of the absorbents and the interactions among absorbents, soil, and irrigation water quality would be of help in water management of sandy soil. | ANDRY Henintsoa INOUE Mitsuhiro MORITANI Shigeoki UZOMA Kingsley Chinyere | 2010 | Journal of Northeast Agricultural University(English Edition)2010,17,4: | 0 |

| 15 | Experimental Culture of the Giant Freshwater Prawn, Macrobrachium vollenhovenii (Herklots, 1857) around the FUTO Axis of Otamiri River, Imo State, Nigeria显示文摘Culture trial of 7,488 juveniles of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium vollenhovenii (Herklots, 1857) was carried out for 180 d in concrete tanks to determine their adaptability, survival, feed utilization and growth performance under culture condition. Twelve experimental concrete tanks each measuring 10 m × 5 m × 1.0 m were used for the experiment from March to August 2016. The prawns were stocked two weeks after treatment of tanks with agricultural lime at the rate of 2,279 kg/ha and poultry manure at the rate of 114 kg/ha. Four experimental diets tested were designated as T1: powdered broiler starter, T2: commercial brine shrimp, T3: combination of broiler starter and brine shrimp and T4: Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experimental Station (MAFES) diet formula. Diets were randomly assigned to the four treatment tanks and replicated three times in a 4 × 3 = 12 experimental units as a completely randomized design experiment (CRD). Each tank was stocked with 624 juvenile prawns with mean total length of 1.5 cm and body weight of 10.0 g. Prawns were fed at 5% body weight and twice at 0600 h and 1800 h. Sampling for growth was carried out bi-weekly while water quality was tested weekly. Results were statistically evaluated with one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Water quality of the four tanks was not significantly different (p > 0.05) from one another throughout the culture period and conformed to recommended tolerable limits in prawn culture ponds. Growth performance was best in diet T4 (the MAFES formula), with a survival rate of 75%, mean weight gain (MWG) of 65 g, relative growth rate (RGR) of 650%, specific growth rate (SGR) of 1.12%, average daily growth (ADG) of 0.3 g/day and food conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.44. The above values differed quite significantly (p < 0.05) from growth responses of other diets. The computed gross ratio (GR) of 0.62 suggests that prawn culture is a highly lucrative business. | Daniel Chikere Njoku Chukwuma Ogueri Christian Ngozichukwu Anyanwu Chukwuka Fabian Ezeafulukwe Chinyere Chikere Njoku | 2019 | Journal of Agricultural Science and Technology(B)2019,9,1: | 0 |

| 17 | Evidentiary discrepancies in sexual assault casework within the US显示文摘In recent years,a significant number of investigations have discovered up to 200000 unsubmitted sexual assault kits(SAKs)in the US.While the public outcry was largely directed towards DNA analysis, the SAKs also contained biological specimens specifically designated for toxicological analysis.Due to the sensitivity of analytes in potential drug facilitated sexual assaults, the preservation and maintenance of the specimens is crucial in providing accurate toxicological measurements. The investigations into the unsubmitted SAKs have identified subjective law enforcement officer(LEO)rationale for the unsubmitted kits, however the impact on toxicological specimens has not been examined. This brief review of policies and guidelines with respect to forensic specimens has identified potential sources of evidentiary degradation, despite the use of chemical preservatives. With respect to temperature-controlled environments, the variation in SAK submission policies established throughout the US are potentially detrimental to the preservation of toxicological evidence.Degradation as a result of time-delayed collection and poorly maintained storage temperatures plays a crucial role for/in the interpretation of qualitative and quantitative toxicological results. This review finds these delays can be addressed through modernisation of facilities;electronic tracking of unsubmitted SAKs;mandated transfer of biological evidence within 72 h;and documentation of temperature within the chain of custody or other records.Without identifying the range of temperatures in which the evidence was exposed, forensic toxicologists may unintentionally provide erroneous interpretations of toxicological analyses-potentially casting doubt on the survivor’s recall of events and negatively impacting future sexual assault investigations. | Chinyere M.Williams | 2021 | Forensic Sciences Research2021,6,4: | 0 |
