| 1 | Assessment of potential impacts to surface and subsurface water bodies due to longwall mining显示文摘Ground movements due to longwall mining operations have the potential to damage the hydrological balance within as well as outside the mine permit area in the form of increased surface ponding and changes to hydrogeological properties. Recently, the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement(OSMRE) in the USA, has completed a public comment period on a newly proposed rule for the protection of streams and groundwater from adverse impacts of surface and underground mining operations(80 FR 44435). With increased community and regulatory focus on mining operations and their potential to adversely affect streams and groundwater, now there is a greater need for better prediction of the possible effects mining has on both surface and subsurface bodies of water. With mining induced stress and strain within the overburden correlated to changes in the hydrogeological properties of rock and soil, this paper investigates the evaluation of the hydrogeological system within the vicinity of an underground mining operation based on strain values calculated through a surface deformation prediction model. | 2 | Development of a new algorithm for implementing the edge effect offset for subsidence calculations显示文摘The surface deformation prediction system(SDPS) program has been developed as an engineering tool for the calculation of subsidence deformation indices through the implementation of various prediction methods.From basic user-defined input parameters, SDPS can determine subsidence indices, such as mining induced displacements, strains, tilt, etc., at any elevation between the seam and the horizontal or varying surface topography.A fundamental parameter in obtaining reliable ground deformation results is the determination of the edge effect offset.The value assigned to the edge effect offset corresponds to a virtual offsetting of boundary lines delineating the extracted panel to allow for roof cantilevering over the mined-out area.The objective of this paper is to describe the methods implemented in updating the edge effect offset algorithm within SDPS.Using proven geometric equations, the newly developed algorithm provides a more robust calculation of the offset boundary of the extracted panel for simplistic as well as more complex mining geometries.Given that an extracted panel is represented by a closed polyline, the new edge offset algorithm calculates a polyline offset into the extracted panel with respect to the user defined edge effect offset distance.Surface deformations are then calculated using this adjusted panel geometry.The Matlab program was utilized for development and testing of the new edge effect offset algorithm.After completing rigorous testing regimes, the new offset algorithm will be integrated into SDPS further increasing the speed and reliability of the program resulting in a retrospective increase in capability and flexibility. | Joshua Hescock Christopher Newman Zach Agioutantis | 2018 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2018,28,1: | 4 |
| 3 | Development of a multiple level underground limestone mine from geology through mine planning显示文摘The development of a multiple level underground mine is a complex task in which geology,engineering,ground control,and unit operations are integrated into a single mine design.The components are interdependent and must function cohesively to ensure a profitable underground mining operation.To optimize reserve recovery,mine planning should begin from the lowest level and progress up.This limits any misjudgments or oversights of a given level affecting the underlying levels and ensures the ability to maximize recovery from each level.Mine planning should start with the exploration and characterization of the geologic setting.Once the reserve geology and quality is well understood,then mine planning can begin with respect to the following:(1)orientation of mine works with respect to horizontal stress;(2)access to the reserve;(3)determination of opening widths;(4)selection of back,floor horizons and pillar centers;(5)selection of development and secondary mining heights;(6)appropriate inter-burden thicknesses;and(7)examining the stability of the multiple level mine through numerical modeling.The multiple level mine design process and decisions are presented through a case history example.The theme is that there is one opportunity to'get it right'and many chances to overlook a small aspect within the design that will plague the mine throughout all levels and through the entirety of its operating life. | Christopher Newman David Newman Robert Dupuy | 2020 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,1: | 3 |
| 4 | Numerical analysis for the prediction of bump prone conditions:A southern Appalachian pillar coal bump case study显示文摘Two miners were fatally injured when a pillar bump occurred during retreat mining in a southern West Virginia coal mine.The mine was operating in the Eagle seam with overmining in the No.2 Gas and Powellton seams.A coal bump is defined as a sudden and violent failure of coal caused by the release of stored strain energy in the pillar.While significant strides have been made by academia,industry,and regulatory agencies to better understand bump conditions and mitigation techniques,coal bumps represent a long standing,highly site-specific engineering problem in which the exact failure mechanism is not clearly understood.In this case history,a cut-by-cut analysis of retreat mining operations was conducted on the 4 East Main leading up to the pillar bump event.Numerical input parameters were derived from site-specific geologic information and mine geometry for the analysis of pillar stress conditions and energy release using LaModel.An overview of stress conditions in the panel was presented including a precursor event that occurred two crosscuts inby the bump site.The methodology presented in the paper for the evaluation of the fatal bump event can be used for the identification of bump prone conditions prior to development and retreat of a mining area. | Christopher Newman David Newman | 2021 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2021,31,1: | 2 |
