Late Mesozoic Chresmodids with Forewing from Inner Mongolia, China (Polyneoptera: Archaeorthoptera)显示文摘Three new species of Chresmodidae are described. They belong to two different genera: Chresmoda multinervis sp. nov., Chresmoda shihi sp. nov. and Jurachresmoda sanyica sp. nov.. A study of the forewing venation is provided. Longitudinal veins are mostly parallel; costal area is broad at the basal and narrowing distally; ScP is probably extending close to the wing apex; R is parallel at length to ScP; MA is running close to R, with two long parallel branches; MA branched-off basally; while MP is not branched until the middle of the wing. However, the important basal part of MP and CuP is poorly preserved. In addition, unique fringing hairs on the mid legs of C. shihi sp. nov. and J. sanyica sp. nov. are described and compared with Jurachresmoda gaskelli Zhang, Ren and Shih, 2008.ZHANG Xinwen REN Dong PANG Hong SHIH Chungkun 2010Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2010,84,1:10
New Jurassic Pseudopolycentropodids from China (Insecta: Mecoptera)显示文摘In this paper two new species of fossil Pseudopolycentropus Handlirsch, 1906 are described: Pseudopolycentropus janeannae sp. nov. and P. novokshonovi, sp. nov. All of them were recovered from the Middle Jurassic non-marine sedimentary strata of northeastern China. The new material from China reveals that the early diversification of pseudopolycentropodids was well underway by the Middle Jurassic.REN Dong SHIH Chungkun Conrad C. 6New fossil elaterid (Coleoptera: Polyphaga: Elateridae) from Yixian Formation of western Liaoning, China显示文摘A new species of the elaterid genus Cryptocoelus Dolin and Nel, 2002 from the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation in the western Liaoning, China is described. Diagnosis of the genus is revised, and the systematic position of the genus is briefly discussed. Because the elaterids originated in the Early to Mid-Jurassic, this new material from the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous will enhance our understanding of the transition between ancient elaterids and extant ones, bridge the gap of cryptic relationships between the Mesozoic cupedids and elaterids, and expand our knowledge of their evolutionary history.Chang Huali Ren Dong Shih Chungkun 2007Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2007,17,10:5
New discovery of Palaeontinid fossils from the Middle Jurassic in Daohugou, Inner Mongolia (Homoptera, Palaeontinidae)显示文摘Three new species of fossil Palaeontinidae are described from Daohugou Village, Inner Mongolia, China: Daohugoucossus shii sp. nov., D. parallelivenius sp. nov., D. lii sp. nov. The diagnosis of Dao- hugoucossus Wang, Zhang and Fang, 2006 is revised. These materials are the first complete fossil palaeontinids in the Middle Jurassic of the world. Based on observation of these new specimens, Sc of this new genus has the following combined characters: joined with R at base, diverged near M separa- tion, coalesced with R before the nodal line, extended beyond the nodal line and fused with R1 before distal end. Due to the Sc characteristics mentioned above, the genus Liaocossus Ren, Yin and Dou, 1998 can be well distinguished from “Ilerdocossus-complex”.SHIH ChungKun 2007Science China Earth Sciences2007,50,4:5
A New Fossil Hangingfly(Mecoptera: Cimbrophlebiidae) from the Early Cretaceous of China显示文摘A new species, Cimbrophlebia rara sp. nov., in the family Cimbrophlebiidae(Mecoptera) is described and illustrated. This specimen was collected from the Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation at Liutiaogou in Inner Mongolia, China. This is the first record of a cimbrophlebiid from the Jehol biota. A key to all species of Cimbrophlebia is given. A preliminary review of published taxa data indicates that from the Middle Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous, Mecoptera became less diverse and less abundant in northeastern China at familiar level(from 11 to 6), generic level(from 32 to 8) and specific level(from 44 to 14).WANG Chen SHIH Chungkun REN Dong 2014Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2014,88,1:4

A New Axymyiid Genus with Two New Species from the Middle Jurassic of China (Diptera: Nematocera: Axymyiidae)显示文摘The Axymyiidae is one of the small families of the suborder Nematocera within the Diptera.Up to date, three genera and seven species of extant axymyiids have been described from the Holarctic Region, including Canada,China,Hungary,Japan,Russia, and USA,with three genera and three species of fossil taxa described from the Middle Jurassic of Daohugou, northeastern China.A new genus Raraxymyia gen.nov.and two new species,R.parallela and R.proxima gen.et sp.nov.from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou Village,Inner Mongolia,China, are herein described based on their well-preserved wings and body characters.A revised key to the genera of axymyiids is provided.SHI Guifeng ZHU Yan SHIH Chungkun REN Dong 2013Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2013,87,5:2
A New Mesopsychid (Mecoptera) from the Middle Jurassic of Northeastern China显示文摘The family Mesopsychidae Tillyard,1917 presently consists of ten described genera from the Early Permian to the Early Cretaceous of Australia,China,Kyrgyzstan,Russia,South Africa,Tajikistan, and Ukraine.Herein,a new genus and a new species of fossil mesopsychid,Epicharmesopsyche pentavenulosa gen.et sp.nov.,is described from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Inner Mongolia,China, supplementing the family-level diversity. The well-preserved,new material reveals many characters, including antennae, wing venation, shape and genitalia that increase our morphological understanding of the family, although unfortunately the mouthparts and most of the legs are not preserved.Diagnosis of the Mesopsychidae is emended to include a four-or five-branched MP in both the fore-and hind wings. This is the first documentation of a wing coupling structure in the Mesopsychidae, consisting of three to four frenula bristles on the humeral lobe at the base of the costal margin of both hind wings.Asymmetrical shape and size of the left and right wings on a specimen of E.pentavenulosa gen.et sp.nov.,seems to be a common condition for mesopsychid taxa from northeastern China.SHIH ChungKun QIAO Xiao Conrad C.LABANDEIRA REN Dong 2013Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2013,87,5:2
Plant-herbivorous insect networks: who is eating what revealed by long barcodes using high-throughput sequencing and Trinity assembly显示文摘Interactions between plants and insects are among the most important life functions for all organism at a particular natural community.Usually a large number of samples are required to identify insect diets in food web studies.Previously,Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing(NGS)with short DNA barcodes were used, resulting in low species-level identification;meanwhile the costs of Sanger sequencing are expensive for metabarcoding together with more samples. Here,we present a fast and effective sequencing strategy to identify larvae of Lepidoptera and their diets at the same time without increasing the cost on Illumina platform in a single HiSeq run, with long-multiplexmetabarcoding(COI for insects, rbcL,matK,ITS and trnL for plants)obtained by Trinity assembly(SHMMT).Meanwhile,Sanger sequencing(for single individuals)and NGS(for polyphagous)were used to verify the reliability of the SHMMT approach.Furthermore,we show that SHMMT approach is fast and reliable, with most high-quality sequences of five DNA barcodes of 63 larvae individuals(54 species)recovered(full length of 100%of the COI gene and 98.3%of plant DNA barcodes)using Trinity assembly(up-sized to 1015 bp).For larvae diets identification,95%are reliable;the other 5%failed because their guts were empty. The diets identified by SHMMT approach are 100%consistent with the host plants that the larvae were feeding on during our collection. Our study demonstrates that SHMMT approach is reliable and cost-effective for insect-plants network studies. This will facilitate insect-host plant studies that generally contain a huge number of samples.Xiao-Man Zhang Zhi-Yong Shi Shao-Qian Zhang Peng Zhang John-James Wilson Chungkun Shih Jing Li Xue-Dong Li Guo-Yue Yu Ai-Bing Zhang 2021Insect Science2021,28,1:1

The earliest Timematids in Burmese amber reveal diverse tarsal pads of stick insects in the mid-Cretaceous显示文摘Many extant insects have developed pad structures, euplantulae or arolia on their tarsi to increase friction or enhance adhesion for better mobility. Many polyneopteran insects with euplantulae, for example, Grylloblattodea, Mantophasmatodea and Orthoptera, have been described from the Mesozoic. However, the origin and evolution of stick insects' euplantulae are poorly understood due to rare fossil records. Here, we report the earliest fossil records of Timematodea hitherto, Tumefactipes prolongates gen. et sp. nov. and Granosicorpes Urates gen. et sp. nov., based on three specimens from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. Specimens of Tumefactipes prolongates gen. et sp. nov. have extremely specialized and expanded euplantulae on their tarsomere II. These new findings are the first known and the earliest fossil records about euplantula structure within Phasmatodea, demonstrating the diversity of euplantulae in Polyneoptera during the Mesozoic. Such tarsal pads might have increased friction and helped these mid-Cretaceous stick insects to climb more firmly on various surfaces, such as broad leaves, wetted tree branches or ground. These specimens provide more morphological data for us to understand the relationships of Timematodea, Euphasmatodea, Orthoptera and Embioptera, suggesting that Timematodea might be monophyletic with Euphasmatodea rather than Embioptera and Phasmatodea should have a closer relationship with Orthoptera rather than Embioptera.Sha Chen Shi-Wo Deng Chungkun Shih Wei-Wei Zhang Peng Zhang Dong Ren Yi-Ning Zhu Tai-Ping Gao 2019Insect Science2019,26,5:0
