| 1 | Scaling behavior of magnitude clusters in aftershock sequence:An example of the Wenchuan Earthquake,China显示文摘The Gutenberg-Richter and Omori Laws, which are generally used to characterize the temporal distribution of aftershock, failed to reflect the statistic properties of climatic outbreak of aftershock energy. Based on a new concept of magnitude clusters describing the fluctuation of aftershock energy release of the Wenchuan Earthquake, we discovered that the pattern of the continuous high-magnitude aftershock follows a power-law rather than a non-Poisson distribution. This suggests that the after-shocks with high magnitudes are statistically clustered. We then divided the aftershock sequences into three sections and demonstrated that though the probability of strong outbreaks decreased with time, there exists a high possibility of the occurrence of isolated high-magnitude aftershocks in the future. Based on self-organized criticality theory, the mechanisms of the power-law pattern of magnitude clusters are discussed. | 5 | Research on Flood Control Design Based on Joint Distribution of Flood Levels and Flood Peak Discharges显示文摘The return level of the joint distribution of flood levels and flood peak discharges was analyzed by Archimedean Gumbel-Hougaard copula and Kendall distribution functions.Using the annual maximum level(H)and discharge(Q)of flood peak at Boluo Hydrologic Station in the Dongjiang River in last 56 years,the'OR'return period,'AND'return period and Kendall return period of their joint distribution and the most likely design flood value were calculated.The main conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows:the Kendall return period can more accurately reflect the risk rate of the combination of flood elements,relative to'OR'return period and'AND'return period.The design value of univariate flood element based on the current specification can meet the design standard.While the design value calculated according to'OR'return period was on the high side,and the design value calculated by the'AND'return period was on low side.Based on the principle of maximum probability,the calculated design value of Kendall return period under the different combinations of flood peak discharge and water level can provide new options for flood control project safety and risk management. | Zishen CHEN Qiang HUANG Chunqiong HUANG | 2020 | Meteorological and Environmental Research2020,11,6: | 0 |
| 6 | Mining and utilization of salinity tolerant legumes in tropical coastal agroecosystems: An overview显示文摘Coastal saline soils are increasing year by year caused by climate change and human activities.Most of the coastal saline soils are idle due to their high salinity level and few crops can grow normally.Salinity tolerant legumes are naturally tolerant to salt,which can ecologically cover the coastal saline soil,enhance soil fertility by symbiotic nitrogen fixation and increase the smallholder farmers’benefits in terms of forage,green manure,food or medicine.However,few reports are available for the systematic evaluation of salinity tolerant legumes.This review summarizes and evaluates currently available salinity tolerant legume species that could potentially be used and discusses their potential for integration into smallholder mixed coastal systems of the Asia-Pacific region.Fourty four salinity tolerant legumes were summarized,six of them showed a high level of salinity tolerance,17 of them showed a moderate level of salinity tolerance and 21 of them showed potential salinity tolerance but need to be further studied.Many gaps such as combined tolerance evaluation,nitrogen fixation efficiency,animal feeding experiments and salinity tolerant rhizobia screening/inoculants exist.Case studies demonstrate legumes could be used to reclaim coastal saline soils,but commitment and support from government and public services are necessary to address both seed system and extension needs,through the provision of adequate incentives,policies and development efforts. | Yiming Liu Mary Atieno Juan Andres Cardoso Hubiao Yang Bin Xu Rongshu Dong Linling Yan Chunqiong Huang Hengfu Huan Daogeng Yu Sabine Douxchamps Guodao Liu | 2022 | Grass Research2022,2,1: | 0 |

| 9 | Fractal Analyses Reveal the Origin of Aesthetics in Chinese Calligraphy显示文摘Chinese calligraphy is a thousand-year-old writing art. The question of how Chinese calligraphy artworks convey emotion has cast its spell over people for millennia. Calligraphers' joys and sorrows were expressed in the complexity of the character strokes, style variations and general layouts. Determining how Chinese calligraphy aesthetic patterns emerged from the general layout of artworks is a challenging objective for researchers. Here we investigate the statistical fluctuation structure of Chinese calligraphy characters sizes using characters obtained from the calligraphy artwork 'Preface to the Poems Collected from the Orchid Pavilion' which was praised as the best running script under heaven. We found that the character size distribution is a stretched exponential distribution. Moreover, the variations in the local correlation features in character size fluctuations can accurately reflect expressions of the calligrapher's complex feelings. The fractal dimensions of character size fluctuations are close to the Fibonacci sequence.
