Bactericidal and anti-adhesive properties of culinary and medicinal plants against Helicobacter pylori显示文摘AIM: To investigate the bactericidal and anti-adhesive properties of 25 plants against Helicobacter pylori (H pylori).METHODS: Twenty-five plants were boiled in water to produce aqueous extracts that simulate the effect of cooking. The bactericidal activity of the extracts was assessed by a standard kill-curve with seven strains of H pylori. The anti-adhesive property was assessed by the inhibition of binding of four strains of FITC-labeled H pylori to stomach sections. RESULTS: Of all the plants tested, eight plants, including Bengal quince, nightshade, garlic, dill, black pepper, coriander, fenugreek and black tea, were found to have no bactericidal effect on any of the isolates. Columbo weed, long pepper, parsley, tarragon, nutmeg, yellow-berried nightshade, threadstem carpetweed, sage and cinnamon had bactericidal activities against H pylori, but total inhibition of growth was not achieved in this study. Among the plants that killed H pylori, turmeric was the most efficient, followed by cumin, ginger, chilli, borage, black caraway, oregano and liquorice. Moreover, extracts of turmeric; borage and parsley were able to inhibit the adhesion of H pylori strains to the stomach sections.CONCLUSION: Several plants that were tested in our study had bactericidal and/or anti-adhesive effects on H pylori. Ingestion of the plants with anti-adhesive properties could therefore provide a potent alternative therapy for H pylori infection, which overcomes the problem of resistance associated with current antibiotic treatment. | Rachel O'Mahony Huda Al-Khtheeri Deepaka Weerasekera Neluka Fernando Dino Vaira John Holton Christelle Basset | 2005 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,47: | 29
Biomass gasification technology:The state of the art overview显示文摘In the last decades the interest in the biomass gasification process has increased due to the growing attention to the use of sustainable energy. Biomass is a renewable energy source and represents a valid alternative to fossil fuels. Gasification is the thermochemical conversion of an organic material into a valuable gaseous product, called syngas, and a solid product, called char. The biomass gasification represents an efficient process for the production of power and heat and the production of hydrogen and second-generation biofuels. This paper deals with the state of the art biomass gasification technologies, evaluating advantages and disadvantages, the potential use of the syngas and the application of the biomass gasification. Syngas cleaning though fundamental to evaluate any gasification technology is not included in this paper since; in the authors' opinion, a dedicated review is necessary. | Antonio Molino Simeone Chianese Dino Musmarra | 2016 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2016,25,1: | 28
Minimally invasive treatment of pancreatic pseudocysts显示文摘A pancreatic pseudocyst(PPC) is typically a complication of acute and chronic pancreatitis, trauma or pancreatic duct obstruction. The diagnosis of PPC can be made if an acute fluid collection persists for 4 to 6 wk and is enveloped by a distinct wall. Most PPCs regress spontaneously and require no treatment, whereas some may persist and progress until complications occur. The decision whether to treat a patient who has a PPC, as well as when and with what treatment modalities, is a difficult one. PPCs can be treated with a variety of methods: percutaneous catheter drainage(PCD), endoscopic transpapillary or transmural drainage, laparoscopic surgery, or open pseudocystoenterostomy. The recent trend in the management of symptomatic PPC has moved toward less invasive approaches such as endoscopic- and image-guided PCD. The endoscopic approach is suitable because most PPCs lie adjacent to the stomach. The major advantage of the endoscopic approach is that it creates a permanent pseudocysto-gastric track with no spillage of pancreatic enzymes. However, given the drainage problems, the monitoring, catheter manipulation and the analysis of cystic content are very difficult or impossible to perform endoscopically, unlike in the PCD approach. Several conditions must be met to achieve the complete obliteration of the cyst cavity.Pancreatic duct anatomy is an important factor in the prognosis of the treatment outcome, and the recovery of disrupted pancreatic ducts is the main prognostic factor for successful treatment of PPC, regardless of the treatment method used. In this article, we review and evaluate the minimally invasive approaches in the management of PPCs. | Enver Zerem Goran Hauser Svjetlana Loga-Zec Suad Kunosi Predrag Jovanovi Dino Crnki | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,22: | 18

Helicobacter pylori and functional dyspepsia: An unsolved issue?显示文摘Patients with Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection may complain of dyspeptic symptoms without presence of macroscopic lesions on gastroduodenal mucosa. Such a condition is usually recognized as functional dyspepsia, and different pathogenetic mechanisms are involved. The role of H. pylori in these patients is controversial. Several trials assessed the potential role of H. pylori eradication in improving dyspeptic symptoms, and data of some meta-analyses demonstrated that cure of infection is associated with a small(10%), but significant therapeutic gain as compared to placebo. The reason for which dyspeptic symptoms regress in some patients following bacterial eradication, but persist in others remains unclear. Regrettably, trials included in the meta-analyses are somewhat different for study design, definition of symptoms, assessment of symptoms changes, and some may be flawed by potential pitfalls. Consequently, the information could be not consistent. | 9 | Extreme gastric dilation caused by chronic lead poisoning: A case report显示文摘Lead is a toxic metal that affects many organ systems and functions in humans. In the majority of adults, chronic lead poisoning comes from exposures to work places and can occur in numerous work settings, such as manufacturing, lead smelting and refinement, or due to use of batteries, pigments, solder, ammunitions, paint, car radiators, cable and wires, certain cosmetics. In some countries, lead is added to petrol. We present a rare case of gastric dilation caused by long-term petrol ingestion. A 16-year-old young man was admitted to our hospital due to a 6-mo history of exhaustion, dizziness, nausea, abdominal cramps and constipation. X-ray examination revealed dilated stomach descending into the pelvis and small bowel distension. After a long clinical observation, we found that the reason for the chronic lead poisoning of the patient was due to a 3-year history of petrol ingestion. The patient spontaneously recovered and stomach returned to its normal position and size. Lead poisoning should be taken into consideration in all unexplained cases of gastric dilation. | Vesna Begovic Darko Nozic Srdjan Kupresanin Dino Tarabar | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,16: | 4

Silver impregnated carbon for adsorption and desorption of elemental mercury vapors显示文摘The Hg 0 vapor adsorption experimental results on a novel sorbent obtained by impregnating a commercially available activated carbon (Darco G60 from BDH) with silver nitrate were reported. The study was performed by using a fundamental approach,in an apparatus at laboratory scale in which a synthetic flue gas, formed by Hg 0 vapors in a nitrogen gas stream,at a given temperature and mercury concentration, was flowed through a fixed bed of adsorbent material.Breakthrough curves and adsorption isotherms were obtained for bed temperatures of 90,120 and 150°C and for Hg 0 concentrations in the gas varying in the range of 0.8–5.0 mg/m 3 .The experimental gas-solid equilibrium data were used to evaluate the Langmuir parameters and the heat of adsorption. The experimental results showed that silver impregnated carbon was very effective to capture elemental mercury and the amount of mercury adsorbed by the carbon decreased as the bed temperature increased. In addition,to evaluate the possibility of adsorbent recovery, desorption was also studied.Desorption runs showed that both the adsorbing material and the mercury could be easily recovered, since at the end of desorption the residue on solid was almost negligible. The material balance on mercury and the constitutive equations of the adsorption phenomenon were integrated, leading to the evaluation of only one kinetic parameter which fits well both the experimentally determined breakthrough and desorption curves. | Despina Karatza Marina Prisciandaro Amedeo Lancia Dino Musmarra | 2011 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,9: | 3

Importance of genetic polymorphisms in liver transplantation outcomes显示文摘Although, liver transplantation serves as the only curative treatment for patients with end-stage liver diseases,it is burdened with complications, which affect survival rates. In addition to clinical risk factors, contribution of recipient and donor genetic prognostic markers has been extensively studied in order to reduce the burden and improve the outcomes.Determination of single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)is one of the most important tools in development of personalized transplant approach. To provide a better insight in recent developments,we review the studies published in the last three years that investigated an association of recipient or donor SNPs with most common issues in liver transplantation:Acute cellular rejection, development of new-onset diabetes mellitus and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence, and tacrolimus concentration variability.Reviewed studies confirmed previously established SNP prognostic factors, such as PNPLA3 rs738409 for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease development,or the role of CYP3A5 rs776746 in tacrolimus concentration variability. They also identified several novel SNPs,with a reasonably strong association, which have the potential to become useful predictors of post-transplant complications. However,as the studies were typically conducted in one center on relatively low-to-moderate number of patients, verification of the results in other centers is warranted to resolve these limitations.Furthermore,of 29 reviewed studies,28 used gene candidate approach and only one implemented a genome wide association approach.Genome wide association multicentric studies are needed to facilitate the development of personalized transplant medicine. | Tomislav Kelava Petra Turcic Antonio Markotic Ana Ostojic Dino Sisl Anna Mrzljak | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,12: | 2
