Bacterial Community and Function of Biological Activated Carbon Filter in Drinking Water Treatment显示文摘Objective It aims to investigate the changes in composition and structure of bacterial communities de-veloping on biological activated carbon (BAC) particles, and the bacterial functions. Method A pilot plant had been in service for 180 days, aiming to develop bacterial communities on acti-vated carbon naturally. After 180 days of operation, the bacterial communities were determined by dena-turing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analyses of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes. The study on community composition and the phylogenetic relationships of the organisms was complemented by a se-quence analysis of cloned PCR products from 16S rRNA genes. Gas chromatorgaphy-mass (GC-MS) mea-surement was used to determine organic chemical composition of inflow and outflow water on the 300th day. TOC and NH 4 + -N were also tested in this experiment. Results It showed that the stable bacterial structure did not develop on BAC particles until the 9th month during running time of the BAC filter. The communities were finally dominated by Pseudomonas sp., Ba-cillus sp., Nitrospira sp., and an uncultured bacterium. Stable bacterial communities played an important role in removal of NH 4 + -N and total organic carbon (TOC). Results from gas chromatorgaphy-mass (GC-MS) showed that 36 kinds of chemicals in feed water were eliminated, and concentrations of 5 kinds of chemicals decreased. These chemicals served as nutrients for the dominant bacteria. Conclusion The findings from the study suggested that the stability of microbial structure was beneficial for improving NH 4 + -N and TOC removal efficiencies. The dominant bacteria had the advantage of biode-grading a wide range of organic chemicals and NH 4 + -N. | ZHANG DuoYing LI WeiGuang ZHANG ShuMei LIU Miao ZHAO XiaoYu ZHANG XianCheng | 2011 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2011,24,2: | 8
Evaluation of the New Dynamic Global Vegetation Model in CAS-ESM显示文摘In the past several decades, dynamic global vegetation models(DGVMs) have been the most widely used and appropriate tool at the global scale to investigate vegetation-climate interactions. At the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, a new version of DGVM(IAP-DGVM) has been developed and coupled to the Common Land Model(CoLM) within the framework of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Earth System Model(CAS-ESM). This work reports the performance of IAP-DGVM through comparisons with that of the default DGVM of CoLM(CoLM-DGVM) and observations. With respect to CoLMDGVM, IAP-DGVM simulated fewer tropical trees, more 'needleleaf evergreen boreal tree' and 'broadleaf deciduous boreal shrub', and a better representation of grasses. These contributed to a more realistic vegetation distribution in IAP-DGVM,including spatial patterns, total areas, and compositions. Moreover, IAP-DGVM also produced more accurate carbon fluxes than CoLM-DGVM when compared with observational estimates. Gross primary productivity and net primary production in IAP-DGVM were in better agreement with observations than those of CoLM-DGVM, and the tropical pattern of fire carbon emissions in IAP-DGVM was much more consistent with the observation than that in CoLM-DGVM. The leaf area index simulated by IAP-DGVM was closer to the observation than that of CoLM-DGVM; however, both simulated values about twice as large as in the observation. This evaluation provides valuable information for the application of CAS-ESM, as well as for other model communities in terms of a comparative benchmark. | Jiawen ZHU Xiaodong ZENG Minghua ZHANG Yongjiu DAI Duoying JI Fang LI Qian ZHANG He ZHANG Xiang SONG | 2018 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2018,35,6: | 6

Simulation of Silty Clay Compressibility Parameters Based on Improved BP Neural Network Using Bayesian Regularization显示文摘Soil compressibility parameters are important indicators in the geotechnical field and are affected by various factors such as natural conditions and human interference. When the sample size is too large, conventional methods require massive human and financial resources. In order to reasonably simulate the compressibility parameters of the sample, this paper firstly adopts the correlation analysis to select seven influencing factors. Each of the factors has a high correlation with compressibility parameters.Meanwhile, the proportion of the weights of the seven factors in the Bayesian neural network is analyzed based on Garson theory.Secondly,an output model of the compressibility parameters of BR-BP silty clay is established based on Bayesian regularized BP neural network. Finally, the model is used to simulate the measured compressibility parameters. The output results are compared with the measured values and the output results of the traditional LM-BP neural network. The results show that the model is more stable and has stronger nonlinear fitting ability. The output of the model is basically consistent with the actual value.Compared with the traditional LMBP neural network model, its data sensitivity is enhanced, and the accuracy of the output result is significantly improved, the average value of the relative error of the compression coefficient is reduced from 15.54%to 6.15%,and the average value of the relative error of the compression modulus is reduced from 6.07%to 4.62%.The results provide a new technical method for obtaining the compressibility parameters of silty clay in this area, showing good theoretical significance and practical value. | CAI Run PENG Tao WANG Qian HE Fanmin ZHAO Duoying | 2020 | Earthquake Research in China2020,34,3: | 1

CAS-ESM2.0 Dataset for the Carbon Dioxide Removal Model Intercomparison Project(CDRMIP)显示文摘Understanding the response of the Earth system to varying concentrations of carbon dioxide(CO_(2))is critical for projecting possible future climate change and for providing insight into mitigation and adaptation strategies in the near future. In this study,we generate a dataset by conducting an experiment involving carbon dioxide removal(CDR)—a potential way to suppress global warming—using the Chinese Academy of Sciences Earth System Model version 2.0(CASESM2.0).A preliminary evaluation is provided. The model is integrated from 200–340 years as a 1%yr^(−1) CO_(2) concentration increase experiment, and then to~478 years as a carbon dioxide removal experiment until CO_(2) returns to its original value. Finally, another 80 years is integrated in which CO_(2) is kept constant.Changes in the 2-m temperature, precipitation, sea surface temperature, ocean temperature,Atlantic meridional overturning circulation(AMOC),and sea surface height are all analyzed. In the ramp-up period, the global mean 2-m temperature and precipitation both increase while the AMOC weakens.Values of all the above variables change in the opposite direction in the ramp-down period, with a delayed peak relative to the CO_(2) peak. After CO_(2) returns to its original value, the global mean 2-m temperature is still~1 K higher than in the original state, and precipitation is~0.07 mm d^(–1) higher. At the end of the simulation, there is a~0.5°C increase in ocean temperature and a 1 Sv weakening of the AMOC.Our model simulation produces similar results to those of comparable experiments previously reported in the literature. | Jiangbo JIN Duoying JI Xiao DONG Kece FEI Run GUO Juanxiong HE Yi YU Zhaoyang CHAI He ZHANG Dongling ZHANG Kangjun CHEN Qingcun ZENG | 2024 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2024,41,5: | 0
Feeding habitats of blue sheep(Pseudois nayaur)during winter and spring in Helan Mountains,China显示文摘The feeding habitat selection of blue sheep(Pseudois nayaur)was studied by direct observation method in the Helan Mountains,China during winter(from Novembe r to December)and spring(from April to June)from 2003 to 2004.We established 25 line transects to collect information on feeding habitats used by blue sheep.Blue sheep in the study area preferred mountain savanna forests,a habitat dominated by Ulmus glaucescens, with medium tree density(<4 individuals/400 m^(2)),moderate tree height(4-6 m),higher shrub density(>5 individuals/100 m^(2)),higher shrub(>1.3 m),higher food abundance(>50 g),moderate distance to human disturbance(<500 m),and mild distance to bare rock(<2 m).Such habitats characterized by 12 ecological factors were preferred as feeding areas by blue sheep during winter.Similar to habitat selection by the species during winter, blue sheep also showed a preference for mountain savanna with tree dominated by Ulmus glaucescens and medium tree density(<4 individuals/400 m^(2))during spring.Nevertheless, blue sheep preferred medium tree height(<6 m),moderate tree density(5-10 individuals/100 m^(2)),medium shrub height(1.3-1.7 m),higher food abundance(>100 g),moderate altitude(<2000 m),moderate distance to water resource(<500 m),and medium hiding cover(50%-75%)during spring.Selection of the feeding habitats by sheep showed a significant difference in vegetation type, landform feature, dominant tree, tree height, shrub density, distance to the nearest shrub, food abundance, slope direc-tion,slope degree, distance to water resource, and hiding cover between winter and spring. Results of principal com-ponents analysis indicated that the first principal component accounted for 24.493%of the total variance among feeding habitat variance during winter, with higher loadings for vegetation type, dominant tree, tree height, distance to the nearest tree, shrub density, shrub height, altitude, distance to water resource, and distance to human disturbance. In spring, the first principal components explained 28.777%of the vari-ance,with higher loadings for vegetation type, distance to the nearest tree, shrub height, distance to the nearest shrub, food abundance, altitude, and distance to human disturbance. | LIU Zhensheng WANG Xiaoming LI Zhigang CUI Duoying LI Xinqing | 2007 | Frontiers in Biology2007,2,1: | 0
CAS-ESM2.0 Successfully Reproduces Historical Atmospheric CO_(2) in a Coupled Carbon−Climate Simulation显示文摘The atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2))concentration has been increasing rapidly since the Industrial Revolution, which has led to unequivocal global warming and crucial environmental change. It is extremely important to investigate the interactions among atmospheric CO_(2),the physical climate system, and the carbon cycle of the underlying surface for a better understanding of the Earth system.Earth system models are widely used to investigate these interactions via coupled carbon-climate simulations. The Chinese Academy of Sciences Earth System Model version 2(CAS-ESM2.0)has successfully fixed a two-way coupling of atmospheric CO_(2)with the climate and carbon cycle on land and in the ocean.Using CAS-ESM2.0,we conducted a coupled carbon-climate simulation by following the CMIP6 proposal of a historical emissions-driven experiment. This paper examines the modeled CO_(2)by comparison with observed CO_(2)at the sites of Mauna Loa and Barrow, and the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite(GOSAT)CO_(2)product.The results showed that CAS-ESM2.0 agrees very well with observations in reproducing the increasing trend of annual CO_(2)during the period 1850-2014,and in capturing the seasonal cycle of CO_(2)at the two baseline sites,as well as over northern high latitudes. These agreements illustrate a good ability of CAS-ESM2.0 in simulating carbon-climate interactions, even though uncertainties remain in the processes involved. This paper reports an important stage of the development of CAS-ESM with the coupling of carbon and climate, which will provide significant scientific support for climate research and China’s goal of carbon neutrality. | Jiawen ZHU Juanxiong HE Duoying JI Yangchun LI He ZHANG Minghua ZHANG Xiaodong ZENG Kece FEI Jiangbo JIN | 2024 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2024,41,4: | 0
Changes in Global Vegetation Distribution and Carbon Fluxes in Response to Global Warming:Simulated Results from IAP-DGVM in CAS-ESM2显示文摘Terrestrial ecosystems are an important part of Earth systems, and they are undergoing remarkable changes in response to global warming. This study investigates the response of the terrestrial vegetation distribution and carbon fluxes to global warming by using the new dynamic global vegetation model in the second version of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)Earth System Model(CAS-ESM2).We conducted two sets of simulations,a present-day simulation and a future simulation, which were forced by the present-day climate during 1981-2000 and the future climate during 2081-2100,respectively,as derived from RCP8.5 outputs in CMIP5.CO_(2)concentration is kept constant in all simulations to isolate CO_(2)-fertilization effects. The results show an overall increase in vegetation coverage in response to global warming, which is the net result of the greening in the mid-high latitudes and the browning in the tropics. The results also show an enhancement in carbon fluxes in response to global warming, including gross primary productivity, net primary productivity, and autotrophic respiration. We found that the changes in vegetation coverage were significantly correlated with changes in surface air temperature, reflecting the dominant role of temperature, while the changes in carbon fluxes were caused by the combined effects of leaf area index, temperature, and precipitation. This study applies the CAS-ESM2 to investigate the response of terrestrial ecosystems to climate warming.Even though the interpretation of the results is limited by isolating CO_(2)-fertilization effects, this application is still beneficial for adding to our understanding of vegetation processes and to further improve upon model parameterizations. | Xiaofei GAO Jiawen ZHU Xiaodong ZENG Minghua ZHANG Yongjiu DAI Duoying JI He ZHANG | 2022 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2022,39,8: | 0
Arctic sea ice and atmospheric circulation under the abrupt4xCO2 scenario显示文摘We analyze sea ice changes from eight different earth system models that have conducted experiment abrupt4xCO2 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5(CMIP5). In response to abrupt quadrupling of CO2 from preindustrial levels, Arctic temperatures dramatically rise by about 10°C—16°C in winter and the seasonal sea ice cycle and sea ice concentration are significantly changed compared with the pre-industrial control simulations(pi Control). Changes of Arctic sea ice concentration are spatially correlated with temperature patterns in all seasons and highest in autumn. Changes in sea ice are associated with changes in atmospheric circulation patterns at heights up to the jet stream. While the pattern of sea level pressure changes is generally similar to the surface air temperature change pattern, the wintertime 500 h Pa circulation displays a positive Pacific North America(PNA) anomaly under abrupt4xCO2-pi Control. This large scale teleconnection may contribute to, or feedback on, the simulated sea ice cover change and is associated with an intensification of the jet stream over East Asia and the north Pacific in winter. | YU Xiaoyong Annette Rinke JI Duoying CUI Xuefeng John C.Moore | 2014 | Advances in Polar Science2014,25,4: | 0
Simulation and Causes of Eastern Antarctica Surface Cooling Related to Ozone Depletion during Austral Summer in FGOALS-s2显示文摘Two parallel sets of numerical experiments(an ozone-hole simulation and a non-ozone-hole simulation) were performed to investigate the effect of ozone depletion on surface temperature change using the second spectral version of the Flexible Global Ocean–Atmosphere–Land System model(FGOALS-s2), focusing on the eastern Antarctica(EA) continent in austral summer. First, we evaluated the ability of the model to simulate the EA surface cooling, and found the model can successfully reproduce the cooling trend of the EA surface, as well as the circulation change circling the South Pole in the past 30 years.Second, we compared the two experiments and discovered that the ozone depletion causes the cooling trend and strengthens the circumpolar westerly flow. We further investigated the causes of the EA surface cooling associated with the ozone hole and found two major contributors. The first is the ozone-hole direct radiation effect(DRE) upon the surface that happens because the decrease of the downward longwave(LW) radiation overcomes the increase of the downward shortwave(SW)radiation under clear sky. The second is the cloud radiation effect(CRE) induced by ozone depletion, which happens because the decreased downward SW radiation overcomes the increased downward LW radiation in the case of increased cloud.Although the CRE is theoretically opposite to the DRE, their final net effect makes comparable contributions to the EA surface cooling. Compared with the surface radiation budget, the surface heat flux budgets have a much smaller contribution. We additionally note that the CRE is basically ascribed to the circulation change. | YANG Jing BAO Qing JI Duoying GONG Daoyi MAO Rui ZHANG Ziyin Seong-Joong KIM | 2014 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2014,31,5: | 0
