| 5 | Climate change effects on rangelands and rangeland management:affirming the need for monitoring显示文摘Uncertainty as to the extent and magnitude of changes in conditions that might occur due to climate change poses a problem for land and resource managers as they seek to adapt to changes and mitigate effects of climate variability.We illustrate using scenarios of projected future conditions on rangelands in the Northern Great Plains and Desert Southwest of the United States.These two regions are different in the ways climate change is projected to affect the regions.Projection of a longer and warmer growing season in the Northern Great Plains could lead to increased forage production and land productivity.Highly uncertain effects on summer monsoons that primarily control rangeland productivity in the Desert Southwest,combined with the possibility of more intense and/or frequent drought events,could present land managers with challenges stemming from decreased forage production and land productivity.Climate projections,though uncertain,provide land managers with basic insight into future conditions they might encounter.They need more.A focus on vulnerability and resilience,with explicit recognition of interactions between ecological and socio-economic factors,coupled with systematic monitoring and assessment of observable conditions on the land to supplement information based on climate projections,will more effectively provide critical and specific information managers need to adaptively manage rangelands under uncertain climate futures. | Daniel W.McCollum John A.Tanaka Jack A.Morgan John E.Mitchell William E.Fox Kristie A.Maczko Lori Hidinger Clifford S.Duke Urs P.Kreuter | 2017 | Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2017,3,3: | 0 |
| 6 | 北京谱仪Ⅲ实验发现的新强子显示文摘The Beijing Spectrometer(BESⅢ)experiment,which has been studying particle collisions produced by the Beijing Electron Positron Collider(BEPCⅡ)since 2009,has so far discovered a total of 26 new particle candidates(Fig.1).The particles,all strongly-interacting hadrons,are thought to be composed of quarks(q),antiquarks(q),and gluons(g)bound together by the strong force in a surprising variety of configurations.Elucidating their properties provides new insight into the complex nature of nuclear interactions and has been one of the central goals of the BESIII Collaboration,which consists of an international team of more than 600 scientists.While several of the newly discovered hadrons are consistent with the conventional two-quark picture of mesons(qq)or the three-quark picture of baryons(qqq),and were expected,others are more surprising and have exotic configurations,such as tetraquarks(qqqq),meson molecules(qq()qq()),glueballs(gg),or hybrid mesons(qgq).They have led to new advances in our theoretical understanding of the strong force,for example through the development of new approaches in quantum field theory[1]or understanding the importance of hadron molecules[2],and have initiated intense experimental effort[3].In the following,we briefly tour the 26 new hadrons,roughly from the heaviest to the lightest.Their names appear in boldface the first time they are mentioned. | 刘智青 Ryan E.Mitchell | 2023 | Science Bulletin2023,68,19: | 0 |
