1Neurotrophic factors in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases: implications for pathogenesis and therapy显示文摘Neurotrophic factors comprise essential secreted proteins that have several functions in neural and non-neural tissues, mediating the development, survival and maintenance of peripheral and central nervous system. Therefore, neurotrophic factor issue has been extensively investigated into the context of neurodegenerative diseases. Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease show changes in the regulation of specific neurotrophic factors and their receptors, which appear to be critical for neuronal degeneration. Indeed, neurotrophic factors prevent cell death in degenerative processes and can enhance the growth and function of affected neurons in these disorders. Based on recent reports, this review discusses the main findings related to the neurotrophic factor support – mainly brain-derived neurotrophic factor and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor – in the survival, proliferation and maturation of affected neurons in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease as well as their putative application as new therapeutic approach for these diseases management.Tuane Bazanella Sampaio Anne Suely Savall Maria Eduarda Ziani Gutlerrez Simone Proton 2017Neural Regeneration Research2017,12,4:16
2Hepatic glycogenosis: An underdiagnosed complication of diabetes mellitus?显示文摘Hepatic glycogenosis(HG) is characterized by excessive glycogen accumulation in hepatocytes and represents a hepatic complication of diabetes that particularly occurs in patients with longstanding poorly controlled type 1 diabetes(T1D). HG has been reported to be a very rare disease, although it is believed to be extremely underdiagnosed because it is not possible to distinguish it from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) unless a liver biopsy is performed. In contrast to HG, NAFLD is characterized by liver fat accumulation and is the more likely diagnosis for patients with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The pathogenesis of HG involves the concomitant presence of insulin and excess glucose, which increases glycogen storage in the liver. HG is characterized by a transient elevation in liver transaminases and hepatomegaly. Differentiating between these two conditions is of the utmost importance because HG is a benign disease that is potentially reversible by improving glycemic control, whereas NAFLD can progress to cirrhosis. Therefore, HG should be suspected when liver dysfunction occurs in patients with poorly controlled T1 D. The aim of this article is to review the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, pathogenesis and histology of HG.María Teresa Julián Núria Alonso Isabel Ojanguren Eduarda Pizarro Enric Ballestar Manel Puig-Domingo 2015World Journal of Diabetes2015,6,2:4

10Biocompatibility and biotoxicity of in-situ synthesized carboxylated nanodiamond-cobalt oxide nanocomposite显示文摘A nanocomposite that incorporates cobalt oxide(Co_3O_4) and nanodiamond(ND) can present both high magnetism(Co_3O_4) and high hardness(ND). ND particles have potential applications in a variety of fields such as protein immobilization, biosensors, therapeutic molecule delivery and bio-imaging. However, limited information is available in literature on the in-situ synthesis of biocompatible magnetic materials and also on their potential biotoxicity as a result of their entry into environmental compartments and subsequent interaction with biota. In this work, a new kind of bio-compatible magnetic material –carboxylated nanodiamond(c ND) and Co_3O_4 was synthesized to obtain the c ND-Co_3O_4 nanocomposite. The synthesis procedure involved in-situ and chemical reduction of cobalt chloride(CoCl_(26)H_2O) and sodium borohydrate(NaBH_4). The synthesized cND-Co_3O_4 nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The cyto-genotoxicity of the synthesized nanocomposite material was studied by using onion(Allium cepa L.) as a test model with concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 μg/ml. The study was also extended to cND and Co_3O_4 materials for comparison purpose. Co_3O_4 and cND exhibited their contrasting effects on mitosis and other cyto-genotoxic indices studied herein. This work provided fundamental data on the synthesis and the bio-toxicity of the c ND-Co_3O_4 nanocomposite, which, in turn, can help to expand their multidisciplinary applications.L.Syam Sundar Naser A.Anjum M.C.Ferro Eduarda Pereira Manoj K.Singh A.C.M.Sousa 2017Journal of Materials Science & Technology2017,33,8:1
11Co-nanoencapsulated meloxicam and curcumin improves cognitive impairment induced by amyloid-beta through modulation of cyclooxygenase-2 in mice显示文摘Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder and complex mechanisms are involved in the physiopathology of Alzheimer’s disease. However, there is data suggesting that inflammation plays a role in its development and progression.Indeed, some non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, such as meloxicam, which act by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 have been used as neuroprotective agents in different neurodegenerative disease models. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of co-nanoencapsulated curcumin and meloxicam in lipid core nanocapsules(LCN)on cognitive impairment induced by amyloid-beta peptide injection in mice.LCN were prepared by the nanoprecipitation method.Male Swiss mice received a single intracerebroventricular injection of amyloid-beta peptide aggregates(fragment 25–35,3 nmol/3μL)or vehicle and were subsequently treated with curcumin-loaded LCN(10 mg/kg)or meloxicam-loaded LCN(5 mg/kg)or meloxicam+curcumin-co-loaded LCN(5 and 10 mg/kg,respectively).Treatments were given on alternate days for 12 days(i.e.,six doses, once every 48 hours,by intragastric gavage). Our data showed that amyloid-beta peptide infusion caused long-term memory deficits in the inhibitory avoidance and object recognition tests in mice.In the inhibitory avoidance test, both meloxicam and curcumin formulations(oil or co-loaded LCN)improved amyloid-beta-induced memory impairment in mice. However, only meloxicam and curcumin-co-loaded LCN attenuated non-aversive memory impairment in the object recognition test. Moreover, the beneficial effects of meloxicam and curcuminco-loaded LCN could be explained by the anti-inflammatory properties of these drugs through cortical cyclooxygenase-2 downregulation. Our study suggests that the neuroprotective potential of meloxicam and curcumin co-nanoencapsulation is associated with cortical cyclooxygenase-2 modulation. This study was approved by the Committee on Care and Use of Experimental Animal Resources, the Federal University of Pampa,Brazil(approval No.02-2015)on April 16,2015.Maria Eduarda Ziani Gutierrez Anne Suély Pinto Savall Edina da Luz Abreu Kelly Ayumi Nakama Renata Bem Dos Santos Marina Costa Monteiro Guedes Daiana SilvaÁvila Cristiane Luchese Sandra Elisa Haas Caroline Brandão Quines Simone Pinton 2021Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,4:1

17Tandem running by foraging Pachycondyla striata workers in field conditions vary in response to food type, food distance, and environmental conditions显示文摘Ants show collective and individual behavioral flexibility in their response to immediate context, choosing for example between different foraging strategies. In Pachycondyla striata, workers can forage solitarily or recruit and guide nestmates to larger food sources through tandem running.Although considered more ancestral and less efficient than pheromone trail-laying,this strategy is common especially in species with small colony size. What is not known is how the decision to recruit or follow varies according to the immediate context. That is,how fine adjustments in information transfer affect immediate foraging decisions at the colony level. Here,we studied individually marked workers and evaluated their foraging decisions when food items varied in nature(protein versus carbohydrate),size, and distance from the nest at different temperatures and humidity levels. Our results show that tandem run leaders and potential followers adjust their behavior according to a combination of external factors. While 84.2%of trips were solitary, most ants(81%)performed at least 1 tandem run. However, tandem runs were more frequent for nearby resources and at higher relative humidity.Interestingly, when food items were located far away, tandem runs were more successful when heading to protein sources(75%)compared with carbohydrate sources(42%).Our results suggest that the social information transfer between leaders and followers conveys more information than previously thought, and also relies on their experience and motivation.Janiele Pereira SILVA Lohan VALADARES Maria Eduarda Lima VIEIRA Serafino TESEO Nicolas CHALINE 2021Current Zoology2021,67,5:1
