Anaerobic microbiologically influenced corrosion mechanisms interpreted using bioenergetics and bioelectrochemistry: A review显示文摘Microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC) is a major cause of corrosion damages, facility failures, and financial losses, making MIC an important research topic. Due to complex microbiological activities and a lack of deep understanding of the interactions between biofilms and metal surfaces, MIC occurrences and mechanisms are difficult to predict and interpret. Many theories and mechanisms have been proposed to explain MIC. In this review, the mechanisms of MIC are discussed using bioenergetics, microbial respiration types, and biofilm extracellular electron transfer(EET). Two main MIC types, namely EET-MIC and metabolite MIC(M-MIC), are discussed. This brief review provides a state of the art insight into MIC mechanisms and it helps the diagnosis and prediction of occurrences of MIC under anaerobic conditions in the oil and gas industry. | Yingchao Li Dake Xu Changfeng Chen Xiaogang Li Ru Jia Dawei Zhang Wolfgang Sand Fuhui Wang Tingyue Cu | 2018 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2018,34,10: | 43
Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of Nanocrystalline Materials-a Review显示文摘Nanocrystallization significantly infiuences the electrochemical corrosion behaviors of metals/alloys in liquid system. In active dissolution, nanocrystallization accelerates the corrosion reactions. If the corrosion products are dissoluble, the corrosion rate is increased by nanocrystallization; if the corrosion products are insoluble, the corrosion rate is decreased on the contrary because the corrosion products act as a block layer to delay the dissolution. In passivation, nanocrystallization changes the composition of the passive film, and results into different morphology and growth process of the passive film, both of which improves the formation of compact film and influences the semiconductor property. It influences the passivation depending on fast element diffusion and special adsorbed ability. The small grain size improves the element diffusion, which leads to the different composition of passive film (passive elements enrichment such as Cr, Ti). The small grain size also changes the surface condition, which influences the ions adsorption. All increase the corrosion resistance of materials. In local corrosion, nanocrystallization increases the unstable points on the surface of the materials, which increases the possibility of local corrosion. However, the excellent ability of element diffusion helps heal the local corrosion points, which inhibits the growth of the local corrosion. | Li Liu, Ying Li and Fuhui Wang State Key Laboratory for Corrosion and Protection, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China | 2010 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2010,26,1: | 12
Electrochemical corrosion behavior of 2A02 Al alloy under an accelerated simulation marine atmospheric environment显示文摘The corrosion behavior of 2 A02 Al alloy under simulated marine atmospheric environment has been studied using mass-gain, scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM/EDS), laser scanning confocal microscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and localized electrochemical methods. The results demonstrate that the relationship between the corrosion induced mass-gain and the corrosion time is in accordance with the power rule. The mass-gain increases gradually during the corrosion time, while the corrosion rate decreases. With ongoing of the corrosion, corrosion products film changed from a porous to a compact structure. The various spectroscopic data show that the corrosion products films composed mainly of Al(OH)_3, Al_2O_3 and AlCl_3. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of the 2 A02 Al alloy was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS). | Min Cao Li Liu Zhongfen Yu Lei Fan Ying Li Fuhui Wang | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,4: | 11
Effect of Cl^- on the Properties of the Passive Films Formed on 316L Stainless Steel in Acidic Solution显示文摘The corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel(316L SS) has been investigated in solutions containing various concentrations of chloride ions by using potentiodynamic polarization, capacitance measurement and Motte Schottky relationship analysis(Me S). The result indicates that passive currents change slightly with the addition of chloride ions. The pitting potential(Epit) decreases linearly with log[Cl ]. Correspondingly, the point defect diffusion coefficient(Do) of the passive film increases linearly with increasing log[Cl ]. The results also indicate that the pitting corrosion of 316L SS follows the adsorption mechanism in NaCl solution. | Guozhe Meng Yuan Li Yawei Shao Tao Zhang Yanqiu Wang Fuhui Wang | 2014 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2014,30,3: | 10
Influence of Sputtered Nanocrystalline Coating on Oxidation and Hot Corrosion of a Nickel-based Superalloy M951显示文摘The isothermal and cyclic oxidation behaviors in air and hot corrosion behaviors in Na2SO4t 25 wt%K2SO4salt of M951 cast superalloy and a sputtered nanocrystalline coating of the same material were studied.Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope,X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy were employed to examine the morphologies and phase composition of the M951 alloy and nanocrystalline coating before and after oxidation and hot corrosion. The as-sputtered nanocrystalline layer has a homogeneous g phase structure of very fine grain size(30e200 nm)with the preferential growth texture of(111)parallel to the interface.Adherent Al2O3rich oxide scale formed on the cast M951 alloy and its sputtered coating after isothermal oxidation at 900 and 1000 C.However, when being isothermal oxidized at 1100 C and cyclic oxidized at 1000 C,the oxide scale formed on the cast alloy was a mixture of NiO,NiAl2O4,Al2O3and Nb2O5and spalled seriously, while that formed on the sputtered coating mainly consisted of Al2O3and was very adherent.Nanocrystallization promoted rapid formation of Al2O3scale during the early stage of oxidation and enhanced the adhesion of the oxide scale, thus improved the oxidation resistance of the substrate alloy.Serious corrosion occurred for the cast alloy. The sputtered nanocrystalline coating apparently improved the hot corrosion resistance of the cast alloy in the mixed sulfate by the formation of a continuous Al2O3and Cr2O3mixed oxide layer on the surface of the coating, and the preoxidation treatment of the coating led to an even better effect. | Xinyue Wang Li Xin Fuhui Wang Shenglong Zhu Hua Wei Xiaolan Wang | 2014 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2014,30,9: | 9
Multifunctional superhydrophobic coatings fabricated from basalt scales on a fluorocarbon coating base显示文摘Superhydrophobic coatings are increasingly being evaluated as anticorrosion interventions in exceedingly hydrated environments. However, concerns about their long-term durability and amenability to large-area applications in marine environments are still hindering commercial-scale deployment. This study is focused on development of easy-to-apply superhydrophobic coatings, with multifunctional capabilities,in order to extend the integrity and durability of the coatings in harsh marine environments. Here,a set of facile methods involving selective chemical etching using concentrated Na OH,as well as fluorination with perfluoropolyether methyl ester were adopted to fabricate a superhydrophobic surface on basalt scales, having the required rough hierarchical micro-nanotextured and low surface energy. The superhydrophobic basalt scales were subsequently aligned atop a fluorocarbon resin,pre-deposited on a metal substrate,to yield a multifunctional superhydrophobic coating(3μL water droplet;contact angle=165.1°,rolling angle=0.7°),easily amenable to large surface area application and having excellent wear resistance,UV-aging resistance, salt spray resistance, corrosion resistance and antibacterial capabilities. | Hongpeng Zheng Li Liu Fandi Meng Yu Cui Zhong Li Emeka E.Oguzie Fuhui Wang | 2021 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,25: | 8
Significantly improved corrosion resistance of Mg-15Gd-2Zn-0.39Zr alloys: Effect of heat-treatment显示文摘The effects of heat-treatment on corrosion behavior of Mg-15Gd-2Zn-0.39Zr alloys were investigated through microstructure characterization, corrosion tests, and scanning Kelvin probe force microscope(SKPFM) analysis. In long-term corrosion experiments, the corrosion rates of Mg-Gd-Zn-Zr alloys were mainly determined by the effects of micro-galvanic corrosion. During heat-treatment, the β-(Mg,Zn)3Gd eutectic phase in as-cast alloys transformed into a long-period stacking ordered(LPSO) phase, coupled with the precipitation of small precipitates. As heat-treatment proceeded, the local potential and the volume fraction of the LPSO phases reduced gradually compared with the eutectic phase, which resulted in a remarkable decrease of the micro-galvanic effect between the second phase and Mg matrix. As a result, the corrosion resistance of heat-treated alloys improved significantly. | Jing Liu Lixin Yang Chunyan Zhang Bo Zhang Tao Zhang Yang Li Kaiming Wu Fuhui Wang | 2019 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2019,35,8: | 8

A novel Cu-bearing high-entropy alloy with significant antibacterial behavior against corrosive marine biofilms显示文摘The design of novel high-entropy alloys(HEAs)provides a unique opportunity for the development of structure-function integrated materials with high mechanical and antimicrobial properties. In this study,by employing the antibacterial effect of copper,a novel Al0.4CoCrCuFeNi HEA with broad-spectrum antibacterial and strong mechanical properties was designed.High concentrations of copper ions released from the HEA prevented growth and biofilm formation by biocorrosive marine bacterial species. These findings serve as a proof-of-concept for further development of unique HEA materials with high antimicrobial efficiency and mechanical properties, compared to conventional antibacterial alloys. | Enze Zhou Dongxu Qiao Yi Yang Dake Xu Yiping Lu Jianjun Wang Jessica A.Smith Huabing Li Hongliang Zhao Peter K.Liaw Fuhui Wang | 2020 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2020,42,11: | 6
STOCHASTIC CRACKING AND HEALING BEHAVIORS OF THIN FILMS DURING REACTION-DIFFUSION GROWTH显示文摘The stochastic cracking and healing behaviors of reaction-diffusion growth of thin films were studied by means of Markov processes analysis. We chose the thermal growth of oxide scales on metals as an example of reaction-diffusion growth. The thermal growth of oxide films follows power law when no cracking occurs. Our results showed that the growth kinetics under stochastic cracking and healing conditions was different from that without cracking. It might be altered to either pseudo-linear or pseudo-power laws dependent upon the intensity and frequency of the cracking of the films. When the hoping items dominated, the growth followed pseudo-linear law; when the diffusional items dominated, it followed pseudo-power law with the exponentials lower than the intrinsical values. The numerical results were in good agreement with the meassured kinetics of isothermal and cyclic oxidation of NiAl-0.1 Y (at. %) alloys in air at 1273K. | S.L. Zhu, S.L. Yang, Y.M. Xiong, M.S. | 11 | Methanogenic archaea and sulfate reducing bacteria induce severe corrosion of steel pipelines after hydrostatic testing显示文摘Complex interactions within a microbial consortium can induce severe corrosion in oil pipelines. This study investigated the mechanism of microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC)that led to failure of X52 steel pipelines after hydrostatic testing.Laboratory hydrostatic testing with untreated lake water and underground water were used to simulate and study the events that led to the actual corrosion.Biofilm analysis, weight loss, and several electrochemical measurements demonstrated rapid corrosion rates after hydrostatic testing.Analysis of microbial community structures revealed that methanogenic archaea and sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB),introduced by the hydrotest water, formed corrosive biofilms on X52 steel coupon surfaces that induced severe pitting. | Enze Zhou Jianjun Wang Masoumeh Moradi Huabing Li Dake Xu Yuntian Lou Jinheng Luo Lifeng Li Yulei Wang Zhenguo Yang Fuhui Wang Jessica A.Smith | 2020 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2020,47,13: | 5
Finite element analysis of effect of interfacial bubbles on performance of epoxy coatings under alternating hydrostatic pressure显示文摘The stresses around bubbles formed on a coating/substrate interface under hydrostatic pressure(HP)and alternating hydrostatic pressure(AHP)were calculated using the finite element method. The results reveal that HP promotes coating failure but does not mechanically destroy the interface, whereas AHP can provide tensile stress on bubbles formed at the interface and accelerate disbonding of the coating.Because of water resistance,a lag time exists for the coating that serves in an AHP environment. The coating can have a better protective performance if the lag time suits the AHP to minimize the impact of the AHP on the interface. | Rui Liu Li Liu Wenliang Tian Yu Cui Fuhui Wang | 2021 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,5: | 5
Effect of Microstructures on Corrosion Behavior of Nickel Coatings:(Ⅱ) Competitive Effect of Grain Size and Twins Density on Corrosion Behavior显示文摘Nanocrystalline nickel coatings with grain size of 50 nm were annealed in vacuum at 200°C and 400°C for 10 min.Their microstructures were investigated by transmission electron microscopy(TEM).And their corrosion behaviors were studied by means of polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS).The results showed that their grain size grew up to about 60 nm(200°C)and 500 nm(400°C),respectively.The specimen annealed at 200°C possessed higher density of twins in compared with the counterparts of as-deposited and annealed at 400°C.The normal grain size effect on the corrosion behavior was not observed. However,it was found that the corrosion resistance of the coating linearly changed with the density of twins. | Guozhe Meng Yang Li Yawei Shao Tao Zhang Yanqiu Wang Fuhui Wang Xuequn Cheng Chaofang Dong Xiaogang Li | 2016 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2016,32,5: | 5

Corrosion behavior of metals or alloys with a solid NaCl deposit in wet oxygen at medium temperature显示文摘The corrosion of metals or alloys under solid NaCl deposit in wet oxygen(water vapor and oxygen) at medium temperature 400-700°C causes serious damage and has received considerable attention in recent years.Series of mechanistic studies have revealed synergistic interactions between solid NaCl and water vapor, which accelerates the corrosion process. In addition, the overall corrosion process comprises both chemical reactions(oxidation) and electrochemical reactions and their mutual interactions depend on the system of interest.Interestingly, the wet oxygen environment was found to modify the reactions of the element Cr,which plays a useful role in corrosion protection in this special environment. | LIU Li LI Ying WANG FuHui | 2012 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2012,55,2: | 4
Corrosion Behaviors of Nitride Coatings on Titanium Alloy in NaCl-Induced Hot Corrosion显示文摘TiN and TiAlN coatings were deposited by arc ion plating on titanium alloys to study their hot corrosion resistance when they were exposed to NaCl at 600℃.The microstructure and corrosion behaviors of nitride coatings were studied using scanning electron microscope,X-ray diffraction,electro-probe microanalyzer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that nitride coatings with the different compositions and the ones with the same composition but different thicknesses presented different hot corrosion resistance.TiN and thin TiAlN coatings showed poor corrosion resistance.Serious internal oxidation attacked the alloy substrate.Their corrosion products were mainly consisted of non-protective TiO2 and sodium salt.By contrast, the thick TiAlN coating presented outstanding corrosion resistance.Besides sodium salt, the corrosion products were composed of protective Al_(2)O_(3).The increasing thickness of TiAlN significantly enhanced the hot corrosion resistance. The corrosion mechanisms of alloy,TiN and TiAlN coatings were discussed in detail. | Mingming Zhang Yipeng Feng Yahui Wang Yunsong Niu Li Xin Yongfeng Li Jianxiu Su Shenglong Zhu Fuhui Wang | 2021 | Acta Metallurgica Sinica(English Letters)2021,34,10: | 3

Effect of phosphate-based sealing treatment on the corrosion performance of a PEO coated AZ91D mg alloy显示文摘This study investigated the effect of sealing treatment on the corrosion performance of plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)coated AZ91D Mg alloy with and without addition of corrosion inhibitor. The microstructure, phase composition and corrosion property of the sealed and unsealed coatings were evaluated by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersion spectroscopy(EDS),x-ray diffraction(XRD),x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)tests.Electrochemical experiments and salt spray tests showed that, after sealing in phosphate solution containing corrosion inhibitor, the corrosion current density of PEO-coated AZ91D decreased more than 10-fold and the anti-corrosion time in a salt spray environment increased more than three-fold.The corrosion rate of the PEO coating slowed down due to the releasing and adsorbing of the corrosion inhibitors in the pores and cracks of the coating during the corrosion process. | Kun Qian Weizhou Li Xiaopeng Lu Xinxin Han Yong Jin Tao Zhang Fuhui Wang | 2020 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2020,8,4: | 2
Preparation and Corrosion Resistance of Magnesium Coatings by Magnetron Sputtering Deposition显示文摘Magnesium coatings were fabricated on stainless steel substrates (1Cr11Ni2W2MoV) by a plane magnetron sputteringtechnique. The argon pressure and the substrate condition (including temperature and the substrate was rotated orfixed) were varied in order to evaluate the influence of the parameters on the crystal orientation and morphology of thecoating. The corrosion behavior of the coatings in 1 wt pct NaCl solution was studied by electrochemical methods. The results showed that all coatings exhibited preferred orientation (002) as the argon pressure increased from 0.2 to0.4 Pa. The morphologies of the coatings varied with the argon pressure and with whether the substrate was rotatedor fixed. The open circuit potential of the coatings was more positive than that of cast AZ91D magnesium alloy. However, the immersion test in 1 wt pct NaCl solution showed that the corrosion rates of the coatings were higherthan that of cast AZ91D magnesium alloy. | Hongwei HUO, Ying LI and Fuhui WANGState Key Laboratory for Corrosion and Protection, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China | 2003 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2003,19,5: | 2
