Scatterhoarding rodents favor higher predation risks for cache sites:The potential for predators to influence the seed dispersal process显示文摘Scatterhoarding rodents often place caches in the open where pilferage rates are reduced, suggesting that they tradeoff higher risks of predation for more secure cache sites. We tested this hypothesis in two study systems by measuring predation risks inferred from measures of giving-up densities(GUDs)at known cache sites and other sites for comparison.Rodent GUDs were measured with small trays containing 3 L of fine sand mixed with sunflower seeds. In the first experiment,we relied on a 2-year seed dispersal study in a natural forest to identify caches of eastern gray squirrels(Sciurus carolinensis)and then measured GUDs at:(i)these caches;(ii)comparable points along logs and rocks where rodent activity was assumed highest;and(iii)a set of random points. We found that GUDs and, presumably, predation risks, were higher at both cache and random points than those with cover. At the second site,we measured GUDs of eastern gray squirrels in an open park system and found that GUDs were consistently lowest at the base of the tree compared to more open sites, where previous studies show caching by squirrels to be highest and pilferage rates by naïve competitors to be lowest. These results confirm that predation risks can influence scatterhoarding decisions but that they are also highly context dependent, and that the landscape of fear, now so well documented in the literature, could potentially shape the temporal and spatial patterns of seedling establishment and forest regeneration in systems where scatterhoarding is common.Michael A.STEELE Ghislain ROMPRÉ Jeffrey A.STRATFORD Hongmao ZHANG Matthew SUCHOCKI Shealyn MARINO 2015Integrative Zoology2015,10,3:3

Mutualism between antagonists:its ecological and evolutionary implications显示文摘Mutualism or antagonism between species is often investigated within the framework of monotonic interactions of either mutualism or antagonism, but studies on transition from mutualism to antagonism(within the context of nonmonotonic interactions)have been largely ignored. In this paper, through a brief review and synthesis,we highlighted the role of mutualism between antagonists in regulating the ecological and evolutionary processes,as well as maintaining the stability and complexity of ecosystems.Mutualism between antagonistic species represents the density-dependent transition between mutualism and antagonism, which is beneficial to species coexistence and stability of complex ecosystems;thus,it should be favored by natural selection.Species may face selection of conflicting pressure on functional traits in co-balancing mutualism and antagonism, which may result in evolution of the dual character of species with moderate mutualistic or antagonistic traits.Coevolution and co-balance of these traits are driving forces in shaping mutualism-antagonism systems.Rewards for mutualists, punishment for exploiters, and competition of meta-communities are essential in stabilizing mutualism between antagonists. We appeal for more studies on mutualism between antagonists and its ecological and evolutionary implications by expanding the conventional ecological studies from monotonic to nonmonotonic regimes.Zhibin ZHANG Chuan YAN Hongmao ZHANG 2021Integrative Zoology2021,16,1:2

Using endocarp-remains of seeds of wild apricot Prunus armeniaca to identify rodent seed predators显示文摘Some rodent-dispersed seeds have a hard seed-coat(e.g.woody endocarp).Specific scrapes or dental marks on the hard seed-coat left by rodents when they eat these seeds can be used to identify seed predators. In this study we measured the morphological traits of endocarp-remains of seeds of wild apricot Prunus armeniaca used by Chinese white-bellied rats Niviventor confucianus and Korean field mice Apodemus peninsulae. We established their Fisher's linear discriminant functions to separate endocarp-remains between the two predators.A total of 90.0% of the endocarp-remains left by Korean field mice and 88.0% of those left by Chinese white-bellied rats were correctly classified. The overall percentage of correct classification was 89.0%.One hundred and sixty endocarp-remains of unknown what species predated them were classified using the functions. The method may allow more reliable quantitative studies of the effects of Chinese white-bellied rats and Korean field mice on seed consumption and dispersal of wild apricot and this study might be used for reference in other studies of seed predators identification on hard seeds.Hongmao ZHANG Wei WANG 2009Current Zoology2009,55,6:1
Hierarchical Cooperative Control of Connected Vehicles:From Heterogeneous Parameters to Heterogeneous Structures显示文摘As one of the typical applications of connected vehicles(CVs),the vehicle platoon control technique has been proven to have the advantages of reducing emissions, improving traffic throughout and driving safety. In this paper,a unified hierarchical framework is designed for cooperative control of CVs with both heterogeneous model parameters and structures.By separating neighboring information interaction from local dynamics control, the proposed framework is designed to contain an upper-level observing layer and a lower-level tracking control layer, which helps address the heterogeneity in vehicle parameters and structures.Within the proposed framework,an observer is designed for following vehicles to observe the leading vehicle's states using neighboring communication, while a tracking controller is designed to track the observed leading vehicle using local feedback control.Closed-loop stability in the absence and presence of communication time delay is analyzed, and the observer is further extended to a finite time convergent one to address string stability under general communication topology.Numerical simulation and field experiment verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.Manjiang Hu Lingkun Bu Yougang Bian Hongmao Qin Ning Sun Dongpu Cao Zhihua Zhong 2022IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2022,9,9:1

Context-dependent responses of food-hoarding to competitors in Apodemus peninsulae:implications for coexistence among asymmetrical species显示文摘Superior species may have distinct advantages over subordinates within asymmetrical interactions among sympatric animals. However, exactly how the subordinate species coexists with superior species is unknown. In the forests west of Beijing City, intense asymmetrical interactions of food competition exist among granivorous rodents(e.g.Apodemus peninsulae,Niviventer confucianus,Sciurotamias davidianus and Tscherskia triton)that have broadly overlapping habitats and diets but have varied body size(range 15-300 g),hoarding habits(scatter vs larder)and/or daily rhythm(diurnal vs nocturnal). The smallest rodent,A.peninsulae, which typically faces high competitive pressure from larger rodents,is an ideal model to explore how subordinate species coexist with superior species.Under semi-natural enclosure conditions,we tested responses of seed-hoarding behavior in A.peninsulae to intraspecific and interspecific competitors in the situations of pre-competition(without competitor),competition(with competitor)and post-competition(competitor removed). The results showed that for A.peninsulae, the intensity of larder-hoarding increased and the intensity of scatter-hoarding declined in the presence of intraspecifics and S.davidianus, whereas A.peninsulae ceased foraging and hoarding in the presence of N.confucianus and T.triton.A.peninsulae reduced intensity of hoarding outside the nest and moved more seeds into the nest for larder-hoarding under competition from intraspecific individuals and S.davidianus.In most cases, the experimental animals could recover to their original state of pre-competition when competitors were removed. These results suggest that subordinate species contextually regulate their food-hoarding strategies according to different competitors, promoting species coexistence among sympatric animals that have asymmetrical food competition.Hongyu NIU Jie ZHANG Zhiyong WANG Guangchuan HUANG Chao PENG Hongmao ZHANG 2020Integrative Zoology2020,15,2:0
Plant-animal interactions: patterns and mechanisms in terrestrial ecosystems显示文摘From the early work of Darwin, then Ehrlich and Raven(1964),to the recent novel contribution of mutualistic networks developed by Jordano and colleagues(Bascompte and Jordano 2007,Nuismer et al.2013,Guimarães et al.2017),it is clear that plant-animal interactions—especially those involving herbivory, seed dispersal, seed predation and pollination—are significant drivers of ecological processes and the evolution and maintenance of biodiversity. The vast majority of plant species, for example, are influenced by animal-mediated seed dispersal and pollination.Michael A.STEELE Xianfeng YI Hongmao ZHANG 2018Integrative Zoology2018,13,3:0
Visual and auditory cues facilitate cache pilferage of Siberian chipmunks(Tamias sibiricus)under indoor conditions显示文摘In the struggle for survival,scatter-hoarding rodents are known to cache food and pilfer the caches of others. The extent to which rodents utilize auditory/visual cues from conspecifics to improve cache-pilfering is unknown. Here,Siberian chipmunks(Tamias sibiricus)were allowed to search for caches of Corylus heterophylla seeds(man-made caches and animal-made caches)after experiencing cues from a conspecific’s cache-searching events. For each type of cache,3 experimental scenarios were presented:(1)alone(control);(2)auditory/visual(hearing and seeing conspecific’s cache-searching events);and(3)auditory only(hearing conspecific’s cache-searching events only)with random orders. The subjects located man-made caches faster, harvested more caches, and hoarded more seeds both in the auditory/visual and the auditory only treatments compared to the control, while scatter-hoarding more seeds in the auditory/visual treatment but larder-hoarding more seeds in the auditory only treatment.Compared to the control, the animals spent less time locating animal-made caches, harvested more caches, ate fewer seeds,larder-hoarded more seeds and hoarded more seeds in total both in the auditory/visual and the auditory only treatments, while eating more seeds and hoarded fewer seeds in total in the auditory only treatment than in the auditory/visual treatment. The results also show that females spent less time locating the animal-made caches, but they scatter-hoarded fewer seeds than males in the auditory/visual treatment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that visual and/or auditory cues of conspecifics improve cache-pilfering and hoarding in rodents.Hongyu NIU Wei CHU Xianfeng YI Hongmao ZHANG 2019Integrative Zoology2019,14,4:0
Cultivated walnut trees showed earlier but not final advantage over its wild relatives in competing for seed dispersers显示文摘Little is known about seeding regeneration of cultivated trees compared to wild relatives in areas where seed dispersers are shared. Here,we investigated the differences in seed fates of cultivated walnut(Juglans regia)and wild Manchurian walnut(Juglans mandshurica)trees under rodent predation and dispersal.J.regia seeds have higher nutritional value(large size, mass and kernel mass)and lower mechanical defensiveness(thin endocarp)than J.mandshurica seeds. We tracked seeds of J.regia and J.mandshurica under both enclosure and field conditions to assess differences in competing for seed dispersers of the two co-occurring tree species of the same genus. We found that rodents preferred to harvest, eat and scatter-hoard seeds of J.regia as compared to those of J.mandshurica.Seeds of J.regia were removed and scatter-hoarded faster than those of J.mandshurica.Caches of J.regia were more likely to be rediscovered by rodents than those of J.mandshurica.These results suggest that J.regia showed earlier dispersal fitness but not the ultimate dispersal fitness over J.mandshurica in seeding regeneration under rodent mediation, implying that J.regia has little effect on seeding regeneration of J.mandshurica in the field. The effects of seed traits on seed dispersal fitness may vary at different dispersal stages under animal mediation.Hongmao ZHANG Wei CHU Zhibin ZHANG 2017Integrative Zoology2017,12,1:0
A Systematic Risk Assessment Framework of Automotive Cybersecurity显示文摘The increasingly intelligent and connected vehicles have brought many unprecedented automotive cybersecurity threats, which may cause privacy breaches, personal injuries, and even national security issues. Before providing effective security solutions,a comprehensive risk assessment of the automotive cybersecurity must be carried out.A systematic cybersecurity risk assessment framework for automobiles is proposed in this study. It consists of an assessment process and systematic assessment methods considering the changes of threat environment, evaluation target, and available information in vehicle lifecycle. In the process of risk identification and risk analysis, the impact level and attack feasibility level are assessed based on the STRIDE model and attack tree method. An automotive cybersecurity risk matrix using a global rating algorithm is then constructed to create a quantitative risk metric. Finally, the applicability and feasibility of the proposed risk assessment framework are demonstrated through a use case, and the results prove that the proposed framework is effective. The proposed assessment framework helps to systematically derive automotive cybersecurity requirements.Yunpeng Wang Yinghui Wang Hongmao Qin Haojie Ji Yanan Zhang Jian Wang 2021Automotive Innovation2021,4,3:0
Effects of masting on seedling establishment of a rodent-dispersed tree species in a warm-temperate region, northern China显示文摘Masting is an evolutionary strategy used by plants to promote seed survival and/or seed dispersal under animal predation, but its effects on seedling establishment in field condition are rarely tested by long-term experiments incorporating combined effects of seed and animal abundance. Here,we tracked seed production,rodent-mediated seed dispersal, and seedling establishment in Armeniaca sibirica from 2005 to 2014 in a warm-temperate forest in northern China, and examined the effects of seed abundance and per capita seed availability on seed fate and seedling recruitment rate. Our results showed that seed abundance or per capita seed availability generally benefited the seedling recruitment of A.sibirica through increasing dispersal intensity, supporting predator dispersal hypothesis. However, seedling recruitment showed satiated or even dome-shaped association with per capita seed availability, suggesting the benefit to trees would be decreased when seed abundance were too high as compared to rodent abundance(a satiated effect). Our results suggest that the predator dispersal and satiation effects of masting on seedling recruitment can operate together in one system and conditionally change with seed and animal abundance.Hongmao ZHANG Chuan YAN Shiqi WU Junjie SI Xianfeng YI Hongjun LI Zhibin ZHANG 2021Integrative Zoology2021,16,1:0
Statistical properties of ultrasound speckles reflected from an interface显示文摘The first- and second-order statistical properties of ultrasound -speckles reflected from an interface are studied theoretically and experimentally. A theoretical model for predicting statistical properties of ultrasound speckles is constructed based on the Fresnel-Huygens principle and three basic assumptions. Distributions of amplitude and phase of ultrasound speckles in a scattering space are studied. And the study shows that they are in the form of Rayleigh and uniform distribution respectively. Using the proposed model, the average transverse size of the speckles within a scattering domain which are received by a focus probe is investigated. The average transverse size is found to be dependent on the characteristics of the measuring system only, and does not vary with the position in the domain. To verify the applicability of the theoretical model, a special experimental set-up was designed and the corresponding experiments were conducted for measuring the sound pressure of the ultrasoundWU Yanyang ZHU Hongmao HU Peng LIU Chung(Department of Mechanics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Wuhan 430074) 2003Chinese Journal of Acoustics2003,22,2:0
