| 1 | Generating optical orbital angular momentum at visible wavelengths using a plasmonic metasurface显示文摘Light beams with a helical phase-front possess orbital angular momentum along their direction of propagation in addition to the spin angular momentum that describes their polarisation.Until recently,it was thought that these two‘rotational’motions of light were largely independent and could not be coupled during light–matter interactions.However,it is now known that interactions with carefully designed complex media can result in spin-to-orbit coupling,where a change of the spin angular momentum will modify the orbital angular momentum and vice versa.In this work,we propose and demonstrate that the birefringence of plasmonic nanostructures can be wielded to transform circularly polarised light into light carrying orbital angular momentum.A device operating at visible wavelengths is designed from a space-variant array of subwavelength plasmonic nano-antennas.Experiment confirms that circularly polarised light transmitted through the device is imbued with orbital angular momentum of 62'(with conversion efficiency of at least 1%).This technology paves the way towards ultrathin orbital angular momentum generators that could be integrated into applications for spectroscopy,nanoscale sensing and classical or quantum communications using integrated photonic devices. | Ebrahim Karimi Sebastian A Schulz Israel De Leon Hammam Qassim Jeremy Upham Robert W Boyd | 2014 | Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1: | 39 |
| 2 | Role of quorum sensing in bacterial infections显示文摘Quorum sensing(QS) is cell communication that is widely used by bacterial pathogens to coordinate the expression of several collective traits, including the production of multiple virulence factors, biofilm formation, and swarming motility once a population threshold is reached. Several lines of evidence indicate that QS enhances virulence of bacterial pathogens in animal models as well as in human infections; however, its relative importance for bacterial pathogenesis is still incomplete. In this review, we discuss the present evidence from in vitro and in vivo experiments in animal models, as well as from clinical studies, that link QS systems with human infections. We focus on two major QS bacterial models, the opportunistic Gram negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus, which are also two of the main agents responsible of nosocomial and wound infections. | 3 | Development of an Arabic version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire as a tool to study eye diseases patients in Egypt显示文摘AIM:To develop and test an Arabic version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25(NEI-VFQ-25).METHODS:NEI-VFQ-25 was translated into Arabic according to WHO translation guidelines. We enrolled adult consenting patients with bilateral chronic eye diseases who presented to 14 hospitals across Egypt from October to December 2012, and documented their clinical findings. Psychometric properties were then tested using STATA.RESULTS:We recruited 379 patients, whose mean age was(54.5±15)y. Of 46.2% were males, 227 had cataract,31 had glaucoma, 23 had retinal detachment, 37 had diabetic retinopathy, and 61 had miscellaneous visual defects. Non-response rate and the floor and ceiling numbers of the Arabic version(ARB-VFQ-25) were calculated. Internal consistency was high in all subscales(except general health), with Cronbach-α ranging from0.702-0.911. Test-retest reliability was high(intraclass correlation coefficient 0.79).CONCLUSION:RB-VFQ-25 isareliableandvalidtool for assessing visual functions of Arabic speaking patients. However, some questions had high non-response rates and should be substituted by available alternatives. | 4 | 利拉鲁肽与格列美脲在单药治疗2型糖尿病中的比较(LEAD-3 Mono):一项随机、双盲、平行分组、52周的Ⅲ期临床试验显示文摘背景 2型糖尿病新的治疗策略,需要针对胰岛素-葡萄糖的相互作用,且同时要降低体重增加和发生低血糖的风险。本文作者旨在调查利拉鲁肽单药治疗2型糖尿病的安全性与有效性。
方法 采用双盲、双模拟、治疗一对照、平行分组的研究,746例早期2型糖尿病患者被随机分配到1次/d利拉鲁肽组[1.2mg(n=251)或1.8mg(n=247)]或格列美脲8mg组(n=248),分别治疗52周。主要结局指标为糖化血红蛋白(HbA1c)的改变程度。采用意向性治疗进行分析。该试验在ClinicalTrials.gov网站的注册编码为NTC00294723.
结果52周时,格列美脲组HbA,。下降了0.51%(s=1.20),而利拉鲁肽1.2mg组下降了0.84%(s=1.23)(差值为-0.33.95%CI-0.53~-0.13;P=0.0014),利拉鲁肽1.8mg组下降了1.14%(S=1.24)(差值为-062,95%CI-0.83—-0.42;P〈0.0001)。利拉鲁肽1.2mg组和1.8mg组各有5例和1例患者因呕吐停止治疗,而格列美脲组未出现这种情况。

| 6 | Effect of Helicobacter pylori cdrA on interleukin-8 secretions and nuclear factor kappa B activation显示文摘AIM:To investigate genetic diversity of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) cell division-related gene A (cdrA) and its effect on the host response.METHODS:Inactivation of H.pylori cdrA,which is involved in cell division and morphological elongation,has a role in chronic persistent infections.Genetic property of H.pylori cdrA was evaluated using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing in 128 (77 American and 51 Japanese) clinical isolates obtained from 48 and 51 patients,respectively.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to measure interleukin-8 (IL-8) secretion with gastric biopsy specimens obtained from American patients colonized with cdrA-positive or-negative strains and AGS cells cocultured with wild-type HPK5 (cdrA-positive) or its derivative HPKT510 (cdrA-disruptant).Furthermore,the cytotoxin-associated gene A (cagA) status (translocation and phosphorylation) and kinetics of transcription factors [nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and inhibition kappa B] were investigated in AGS cells co-cultured with HPK5,HPKT510 and its derivative HPK5CA (cagA disruptant) by western blotting analysis with immunoprecipitation.RESULTS:Genetic diversity of the H.pylori cdrA gene demonstrated that the cdrA status segregated into two categories including four allele types,cdrA-positive (allele types;Ⅰand Ⅱ) and cdrA-negative (allele types;Ⅲ and Ⅳ) categories,respectively.Almost all Japanese isolates were cdrA-positive (Ⅰ:7.8% and Ⅱ:90.2%),whereas 16.9% of American isolates were cdrA-positive (Ⅱ) and 83.1% were cdrA-negative (Ⅲ:37.7% and Ⅳ:45.5%),indicating extended diversity of cdrA in individual American isolates.Comparison of each isolate from different regions (antrum and corpus) in the stomach of 29 Americans revealed that cdrA status was identical in both isolates from different regions in 17 cases.However,12 cases had a different cdrA allele and 6 of them exhibited a different cdrA category between two regions in the stomach.Furthermore,in 5 of the 6 cases possessing a different cdrA category,cdrA-negative isolate existed in the corpus,suggesting that cdrA-negative strain is more adaptable to colonization in the corpus.IL-8 secretions from AGS revealed that IL-8 levels induced by a cdrA-disrupted HPKT510 was significantly lower (P < 0.01) compared to wildtype HPK5:corresponding to 50%-60% of those of wild-type HPK5.These data coincided with in vivo data that an average value of IL-8 in biopsy specimens from cdrA-positive and cdrA-negative groups was 215.6 and 135.9 pg/mL,respectively.Western blotting analysis documented that HPKT510 had no effect on CagA translocation and phosphorylation,however,nuclear accumulation of NF-κB was lower by HPKT510 compared to HPK5.CONCLUSION:Colonization by a cdrA-negative or cdrA-dysfunctional strain resulted in decreased IL-8 production and repression of NF-κB,and hence,attenuate the host immunity leading to persistent infection. | Hiroaki Takeuchi Ya-Nan Zhang Dawn A Israel Richard M Peek Jr Mikio Kamioka Hideo Yanai Norihito Morimoto Tetsuro Sugiura | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,5: | 3 |
