1Two decades of variable retention in British Columbia: a review of its implementation and effectiveness for biodiversity conservation显示文摘Stand-level retention is an important component of sustainable forest management which aims to balance ecological,social and economic objectives.Long-term retention of mature forest structures at the time of harvesting(variable retention)is intended to produce future forest stands that more closely resemble conditions that develop after natural disturbances,thereby maintaining greater diversity of habitats for a variety of organisms.Structure includes features such as live and dead trees representing multiple canopy layers,undisturbed understory vegetation and coarse woody debris.Over the past two decades,variable retention has become common on forest lands in the temperate rainforests of coastal British Columbia(BC)and has been applied to a lesser extent in inland forest types.Our review of studies in BC and in similar forest types in our region indicates that both aggregated and dispersed retention can contribute to biodiversity conservation by providing short-term‘life-boating’habitat for some species and by enhancing the structural characteristics of future stands.For example,greater abundance of species present in the pre-harvest forest have been documented for vegetation,birds,carabid beetles,gastropods,ectomycorrhizal fungi and soil fauna in retention cutblocks compared to clearcuts.There are,however,some negative consequences for timber production such as wind damage to retained trees and reduced growth rates of tree regeneration compared to clearcuts.The authors suggest an adaptive management approach for balancing competing objectives when faced with uncertainty.This includes monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of various strategies for achieving goals.Over two decades of experience applying variable retention harvesting to industrial-scale management of forest lands in BC suggests that it is possible to balance production of wood with biodiversity conservation.William J.Beese John Deal B.Glen Dunsworth Stephen J.Mitchell Timothy J.Philpott 2019Ecological Processes2019,8,1:5

3Doxorubicin-conjugated siRNA lipid nanoparticles for combination cancer therapy显示文摘Evasion of apoptosis is a hallmark of cancer,attributed in part to overexpression of the antiapoptotic protein B-cell lymphoma 2(Bcl-2).In a variety of cancer types,including lymphoma,Bcl-2 is overexpressed.Therapeutic targeting of Bcl-2 has demonstrated efficacy in the clinic and is the subject of extensive clinical testing in combination with chemotherapy.Therefore,the development of co-delivery systems for Bcl-2 targeting agents,such as small interfering RNA(siRNA),and chemotherapeutics,such as doxorubicin(DOX),holds promise for enabling combination cancer therapies.Lipid nanoparticles(LNPs)are a clinically advanced nucleic acid delivery system with a compact structure suitable for siRNA encapsulation and delivery.Inspired by ongoing clinical trials of albumin-hitchhiking doxorubicin prodrugs,here we developed a DOX-siRNA co-delivery strategy via conjugation of doxorubicin to the surface of siRNAloaded LNPs.Our optimized LNPs enabled potent knockdown of Bcl-2 and efficient delivery of DOX into the nucleus of Burkitts'lymphoma(Raji)cells,leading to effective inhibition of tumor growth in a mouse model of lymphoma.Based on these results,our LNPs may provide a platform for the co-delivery of various nucleic acids and DOX for the development of new combination cancer therapies.Kamila Butowska Xuexiang Han Ningqiang Gong Rakan El-Mayta Rebecca MHaley Lulu Xue Wenqun Zhong Wei Guo Karin Wang Michael J.Mitchell 2023Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2023,13,4:1

9中国云南省的土壤侵蚀与保护显示文摘本文讨论了长江上游水源区云南境内土壤侵蚀的范围、程度和保持状况。长江发源于中国西部的青藏高原,横贯大陆西东,全长6380km,其源头位于地壳活动和地质不稳定的高原区,流域区是以水稻生产为主的、土地利用程度较高的农业主产区,所以,土壤侵蚀极其严重;随着三峡大坝的修建,土壤侵蚀产生泥沙淤积将降低水库的使用效率等问题,致使土壤保持成为该区必不可少的措施之一,土壤侵蚀问题正越来越受到关注。文章回顾了云南省的土壤保持工作,并以东川、寻甸为例,阐明了云南省的区域土壤保持措施。在云南农业大学农场正在进行的径流区实验被用于评估不同土壤保持措施的效果。试验选择种植当地的主要作物玉米(Zea mays),采取传统的栽培方法,在三个不同的坡度上,沿等高线种植和顺坡向下垂直种植等处理进行,试验地条件与生产上的坡耕地一致。1993~1996年的研究结果表明:一般情况下,沿等高线种植的地区,土壤侵蚀率较低,采取这种措施,平均侵蚀率为顺坡向种植的0.69;秸秆覆盖和沿等高线种植是比较有效的土壤保持措施。Micheal A.Fullen David J.Mitchell Andrew P.Barton Trevor J.Hocking 刘立光 吴伯志 郑毅 夏振远 1999人类环境杂志1999,28,2:0

13Evolving Values and How They Have Shaped the United States National Park System显示文摘As one of the oldest and best-known park systems,the US National Park System continues to influence park systems around the world.However,the origins and wide diversity of US national parks are often not fully understood as there is a long-lived misconception that the large western parks represent the entirety of the US National Park System.In fact,the establishment of the first US national parks was heavily influenced by large 19th-century picturesque urban parks that provided benefits to the public and society.The foundational concept of national parks serving a public purpose has never changed,however,the types of landscapes selected as national parks have changed as societal values have evolved and now the system provides public benefits beyond those originally envisioned.This paper examines the development of the US National Park System,emphasising the evolution of landscape values.The emergence of the cultural landscape concept illustrates the evolution of landscape values from their early antecedents in the late 19th century to their contributions to innovative conservation strategies today.Throughout the development of the US National Park System,international exchange has and continues to play a pivotal role,advancing the inter-linkages of culture and nature for the most effective conservation.Cari Goetcheus Nora J.Mitchell Brenda Barrett 2018Built Heritage2018,2,3:0
