| 1 | Gene expression changes in dorsal root ganglia following peripheral nerve injury: roles in inflammation,cell death and nociception显示文摘Subsequent to a peripheral nerve injury, there are changes in gene expression within the dorsal root ganglia in response to the damage. This review selects factors which are well-known to be vital for inflammation, cell death and nociception, and highlights how alterations in their gene expression within the dorsal root ganglia can affect functional recovery. The majority of studies used polymerase chain reaction within animal models to analyse the dynamic changes following peripheral nerve injuries. This review aims to highlight the factors at the gene expression level that impede functional recovery and are hence are potential targets for therapeutic approaches. | 3 | Spatial distribution of soil hydraulic parameters estimated by pedotransfer functions for the Jialing River Catchment,Southwestern China显示文摘Soil hydraulic parameters θs,α,n,Ks,L and θr of the van Genuchten-Mualem model were estimated using three pedotransfer functions(PTFs) based on soil properties for surface soils of the largest main tributary catchment(the Jialing River) of the upper Yangtze River in China.The soil database was from the second national soil survey of China with a spatial 30 × 30 arc-second resolution.According to the statistical analysis of the differences between the continuous-PTFs-estimated values of soil hydraulic parameters for the study catchment and the reference values for a specific texture class provided in the development database of a specific PTF,best estimations were obtained using the W?sten PTF.The Rawls & Brakenssiek PTF was good estimation for parameter θr that was assumed as zero by W?sten PTF.The established higher θr(0.08%) and lower Ks(20 cm/d) and θs(0.43%) in the mid-downstream area relative to the other areas of the catchment could lead to larger amounts of surface runoff andconsequently provide higher energy to erode soil.Thus,these factors provide a supporting explanation for previously reported severe soil erosion occurring in this area.Spatial heterogeneity analysis for estimated hydraulic parameters in terms of semivariogram showed that the spatial correlation distance was in the range of 50-80 km and that the spatial variability(sill) was not large except for parameters Ks and L.The semi-variance with the exponential model at the zero distance(nugget) was 30%-50% of the sill.This study provided a practical PTF approach for estimating soil hydraulic properties from soil survey data at a large watershed scale.The estimation results could provide better insight into the mechanism of surface runoff and soil erosion,which is important to better understand and manage erosion in the catchment. | LEI Wen-Juan TANG Xiang-Yu Brian J.REID ZHOU Xiang-Yang | 2016 | Journal of Mountain Science2016,13,1: | 3 |
| 4 | Potential for natural and enhanced attenuation of sulphanilamide in a contaminated chalk aquifer显示文摘Understanding antibiotic biodegradation is important to the appreciation of their fate and removal from the environment. In this research an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry(IRMS)method was developed to evaluate the extent of biodegradation of the antibiotic,sulphanilamide, in contaminated groundwater. Results indicted an enrichment in δ^(13)C of8.44‰ from-26.56(at the contaminant source) to-18.12‰(300 m downfield of the source).These results confirm reductions in sulphanilamide concentrations(from 650 to 10 mg/L)across the contaminant plume to be attributable to biodegradation(56%) vs. other natural attenuation processes, such as dilution or dispersion(42%). To understand the controls on sulphanilamide degradation ex-situ microcosms assessed the influence of sulphanilamide concentration, redox conditions and an alternative carbon source. Results indicated, high levels of anaerobic capacity(~50% mineralisation) to degrade sulphanilamide under high(263 mg/L), moderate(10 mg/L) and low(0.02 mg/L) substrate concentrations. The addition of electron acceptors; nitrate and sulphate, did not significantly enhance the capacity of the groundwater to anaerobically biodegrade sulphanilamide. Interestingly, where alternative carbon sources were present, the addition of nitrate and sulphate inhibited sulphanilamide biodegradation. These results suggest, under in-situ conditions, when a preferential carbon source was available for biodegradation, sulphanilamide could be acting as a nitrogen and/or sulphur source. | 5 | Tracking the Cretaceous transcontinental Ceduna River through Australia:The hafnium isotope record of detrital zircons from offshore southern Australia显示文摘The middle-upper Cretaceous Ceduna River system traversed continental Australia from the NE coast to the centre of the southern coast.At its mouth,it formed a vast delta system that is similar in scale to the Niger delta of West Africa.The delta system is composed of two main lobes that represent different phases of delta construction.A recent hypothesis has challenged the traditional idea that both lobes of the delta were derived from a transcontinental river system by suggesting that the upper lobe(Santonian- Maastrichtian) is instead derived from a restricted catchment within southern Australia.Hf isotopic data presented here fingerprint the original source of the upper delta lobe zircons to NE Australia,with data comparing well with similar U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic data from the Lachlan Orogen,the New England Orogen,the eastern Musgraves Province and the northern Flinders Ranges.These data do not preclude a model where the lobe is derived from recycled Eromanga Basin sediments during a phase of late Cretaceous inland Australian uplift,but when coupled with reconnaissance low-temperature thermochronometry from the region of the Ceduna River course indicating widespread Triassic-Jurassic exhumation,and comparisons with detrital zircon data from the Winton Formation upstream of any proposed uplift,we suggest that both lobes of the Ceduna Delta are likely to be derived from a transcontinental Ceduna River. | Jarred Lloyd Alan S.Collins Justin L.Payne Stijn Glorie Simon Holford Anthony J.Reid | 2016 | Geoscience Frontiers2016,7,2: | 2 |

| 9 | An apatite U-Pb thermal history map for the northern Gawler Craton,South Australia显示文摘Apatite U-Pb thermochronology was applied to granitoid basement samples across the northern Gawler Craton to unravel the Proterozoic, post-orogenic, cooling history and to examine the role of major fault zones during cooling. Our observations indicate that cooling following the ~2500 Ma Sleaford Orogeny and ~1700 Ma Kimban Orogeny is restricted to the Christie and Wilgena Domains of the central northern Gawler Craton. The northern Gawler Craton mainly records post-Hiltaba Event(~1590 Ma) U-Pb cooling ages. Cooling following the ~1560 Ma Kararan Orogeny is preserved within the Coober Pedy Ridge,Nawa Domain and along major shear zones within the south-western Fowler Domain. The Nawa Domain samples preserve U-Pb cooling ages that are >150 Ma younger than the samples within the Coober Pedy Ridge and Fowler Domain, indicating that later(~1300 Ma) fault movement within the Nawa Domain facilitated cooling of these samples, caused by arc collision in the Madura Province of eastern Western Australia. When compared to^(40)Ar/^(39) Ar from muscovite, biotite and hornblende, our new apatite U-Pb ages correlate well, particularly in regions of higher data density. Our data also preserve a progressive younging of U-Pb ages from the nucleus of the craton to the periphery with a stark contrast in U-Pb ages across major structures such as the Karari Shear Zone and the Southern Overthrust, which indicates the timing of reactivation of these major crustal structures.
