Pretreated quercetin protects gerbil hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons from transient cerebral ischemic injury by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes显示文摘Quercetin(QE; 3,5,7,3′,4′-pentahydroxyflavone), a well-known flavonoid, has been shown to prevent against neurodegenerative disorders and ischemic insults. However, few studies are reported regarding the neuroprotective mechanisms of QE after ischemic insults. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of QE on ischemic injury and the expression of antioxidant enzymes in the hippocampal CA1 region of gerbils subjected to 5 minutes of transient cerebral ischemia. QE was pre-treated once daily for 15 days before ischemia. Pretreatment with QE protected hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons from ischemic injury, which was confirmed by neuronal nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence staining. In addition, pretreatment with QE significantly increased the expression levels of endogenous antioxidant enzymes Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, Mn superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons of animals with ischemic injury. These findings demonstrate that pretreated QE displayed strong neuroprotective effects against transient cerebral ischemia by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes.Bai Hui Chen Joon Ha Park Ji Hyeon Ahn Jeong Hwi Cho In Hye Kim Jae Chul Lee Moo-Ho Won Choong-Hyun Lee In Koo Hwang Jong-Dai Kim Il Jun Kang Jun Hwi Cho Bich Na Shin Yang Hee Kim Yun Lyul Lee Seung Min Park 2017Neural Regeneration Research2017,12,2:9
Simultaneous occurrence of malignant fibrous histiocytoma and hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic liver: A case report显示文摘Primary hepatic malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is rarely encountered. There have been no reports to date of hepatic MFH associated with liver cirrhosis. The presence of liver cirrhosis is considered an adjunctive feature favoring sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the diagnosis of spindle cell tumors in liver. We describe here a 59-year-old man with liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis B virus infection 20 years ago. On abdominal computed tomography scanning, two distinct hepatic masses were identified in the background of cirrhosis, which had different radiological features from conventional HCC. He underwent segmentectomy for removal of the tumors. The pathological examination of surgically resected specimen revealed the large malignant spindle cell tumor and small conventional HCC. Additional tissue sampling and immunohistochemical stainings demonstrated that the spindle cell tumor was consistent with MFH. On the post-operative follow-up for 21 mo, a round mass showing similar radiological findings for the previous MFH was appeared on the surface of resection margin, suggesting the recurrence. Despite its rarity, hepatic MFH should be considered during differential diagnosis, even in cirrhotic patients, and extensive tissue sampling and immunohistochemical analyses are necessary in the diagnosis of hepatic spindle cell tumors.Hee Sang Hwang Nam Du Ha Yoong Ki Jeong Jae Hee Suh Hye Jeong Choi Young Min Kim Hee Jeong Cha 2011World Journal of Hepatology2011,3,9:1

Ethanol extract of Oenanthe javanica increases cell proliferation and neuroblast differentiation in the adolescent rat dentate gyrus显示文摘Oenanthe javanica is an aquatic perennial herb that belongs to the Oenanthe genus in Apiaceae family, and it displays well-known medicinal properties such as protective effects against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity. However, few studies regarding effects of Oenanthe javanica on neurogenesis in the brain have been reported. In this study, we examined the effects of a normal diet and a diet containing ethanol extract of Oenanthe javanica on cell proliferation and neuroblast differentiation in the subgranular zone of the hippocampal dentate gyrus of adolescent rats using Ki-67(an endogenous marker for cell proliferation) and doublecortin(a marker for neuroblast). Our results showed that Oenanthe javanica extract significantly increased the number of Ki-67-immunoreactive cells and doublecortin-immunoreactive neuroblasts in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus in the adolescent rats. In addition, the immunoreactivity of brain-derived neurotrophic factor was significantly increased in the dentate gyrus of the Oenanthe javanica extract-treated group compared with the control group. However, we did not find that vascular endothelial growth factor expression was increased in the Oenanthe javanica extract-treated group compared with the control group. These results indicate that Oenanthe javanica extract improves cell proliferation and neuroblast differentiation by increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor immunoreactivity in the rat dentate gyrus.Bai Hui Chen Joon Ha Park Jeong Hwi Cho In Hye Kim Bich Na Shin Ji Hyeon Ahn Seok Joon Hwang Bing Chun Yan Hyun Jin Tae Jae Chul Lee Eun Joo Bae Yun Lyul Lee Jong Dai Kim Moo-Ho Won Il Jun Kang 2015Neural Regeneration Research2015,10,2:1

Finger compartment syndrome due to a high-pressure washer injury:A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Although the finger compartment syndrome is not common,it compresses the neurovascular bundles in a limited space and blocks blood flow to the fingers, causing necrosis of the fingertips.Finger fasciotomy through unilateral or bilateral midline release of the finger can achieve decompression of the finger compartment.Herein,we report a case of the compartment syndrome in a finger injury caused by a high-pressure water flow which is commonly used in car washing stations.CASE SUMMARY A 60-year-old man injured his right middle finger while using a high-pressure washer at a car washing station. The patient complained of severe pain in his middle finger and a 0.2 cm punctured open wound on the volar side of the distal phalangeal joint of the middle finger. The fingertip was pale, numb, and characterized by severe swelling and a limited range of motion.Finger radiography showed that there was no fracture in the finger.Digital decompression was performed through finger fasciotomy by bilateral midline incision. On the second day after surgery, the color of the fingertip returned to pink, swelling was resolved, and the range of motion returned to normal. The sensation of the fingertip was completely restored, and the capillary refill test and pinprick test were positive.CONCLUSION The fingertip compartment syndrome can be caused by a high-pressure water flow damage to the fingers when using high-pressure washers at a car washing station. To avoid finger necrosis, rapid diagnosis of the finger compartment syndrome and appropriate digital decompression are essential to better outcome.Jun Ho Choi Seung Yeon Choi Jae Ha Hwang Kwang Seog Kim Sam Yong Lee 2023World Journal of Clinical Cases2023,11,13:0
Rare case of compartment syndrome provoked by inhalation of polyurethane agent:A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND The most common causes of compartment syndrome in the lower extremities include lower limb fractures,trauma-induced crushing injuries, severe burns, and non-traumatic factors. However, there have been no reports of compartment syndrome secondary to toxic inhalation.CASE SUMMARY A 59-year-old man,who lost consciousness after applying polyurethane-based paint on a water tank, was brought to the emergency room. The initial blood test showed apparent rhabdomyolysis. One day later, pain and swelling in both legs were observed, and the physical examination confirmed the presence of compartment syndrome.Double-incision fasciotomy was performed on both legs.Frequent dressings and negative pressure wound treatment were done on both legs, and skin grafting was performed after healthy granulation tissue had been identified. No other complications were observed after treatment. However, symptoms of peroneal neuropathy, particularly limited ankle dorsiflexion and reduced sensation on the lower extremities, were observed.CONCLUSION Workers using polyurethane agents should wear gas masks and be evaluated for compartment syndrome and rhabdomyolysis secondary to toxic inhalation.Jun Ho Choi Hyun Myung Oh Jae Ha Hwang Kwang Seog Kim Sam Yong Lee 2022World Journal of Clinical Cases2022,10,22:0
