| 3 | Seroepidemiology of Helicobacter pylori infection in elderly people in the Beijing region, China显示文摘AIM:To investigate seroepidemiology of cagA+and vacA+strains of Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)in an elderly population in Beijing and to determine risk factors for seropositivity.METHODS:A total of 2006 elderly persons(>60years)were selected using a random cluster sampling method in different parts of the Beijing area(urban,suburban and mountainous districts).Structured questionnaires were completed during home visits,including history of H.pylori infection,history of gastrointestinal diseases,diet types,hygiene habits,occupation and economic status.Blood samples(2 mL)were collected from each participant,and serum IgG antibodies to cagA,vacA and H.pylori urease antigens were measured by immunodetection.RESULTS:The prevalence of H.pylori infection in elderly subjects was 83.4%and the typeⅠH.pylori strain infection rate was 56%.The seroprevalence for typeⅠH.pylori strain infection in urban and suburbandistricts was higher than that in the mountainous areas(P<0.001).Elderly subjects who had previously performed manual labor or were in the young-old age group(age<75 years)had a higher seroprevalence of H.pylori infection than those who had previously performed mental labor or were in the oldest-old age group(age≥75 year)(P<0.05).The typeⅠH.pylori strain infection rate in the elderly with vegetarian diets was higher than in those eating high-protein foods(P<0.001).There was no significant difference in the prevalence of H.pylori strains between male and female elderly participants(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:TypeⅠH.pylori seroprevalence is higher in elderly people.The distribution of strains of H.pylori is significantly affected by age,area and dietary habits. | Mei Zhang Ying-Zhi Zhou Xiao-Ying Li Zhe Tang Hong-Ming Zhu Yan Yang Jagadish K Chhetri | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,13: | 17 |

| 6 | Prognostic analysis and comparison of colon cancer in Han and Hui patients显示文摘AIM:To investigate the relevant prognostic factors and their differences between colorectal cancer(CRC)patients of Chinese Han and Hui ethnicities in the Beijing region.METHODS:A retrospective analysis of 880 patients diagnosed with CRC at Xuanwu Hospital,Capital Medical University between September 2001 and September2011 was performed.Among the 880 patients,398 and482 were Hui and Han,respectively.Characteristics including sex,age,diet,tumor size,primary tumor site,Dukes’stage and degree of differentiation were analyzed for their influence on prognosis.Data on dietary structures were recorded through a questionnaire survey conducted during the patient’s first visit,return visit or follow-up checkups.RESULTS:Among patients with colon cancer,the5-year survival rate for patients of Hui ethnicity was lower than that for Han patients(P=0.025).Six risk factors(age of onset,dietary structure,tumor size,Dukes’stage,location of cancer and degree of differentiation)in both Han and Hui patients were identified as prognostic factors(P<0.05).Multivariate analysis showed that age of onset(P=0.002),diet(P=0.000),Dukes’stage(P=0.000)and degree of differentiation(P=0.000)are prognostic factors affecting both ethnic groups.Comparison of prognostic factors between Han and Hui patients with CRC showed that dietary structure was a statistically significant factor,and diet varied significantly between the two ethnic groups.CONCLUSION:Dietary structure has a significant influence on colon cancer prognosis among Han and Hui patients with colon cancer in Beijing,which may cause a difference in their survival rates. | Mei Zhang Qu-Chuan Zhao Yan-Peng Liu Lei Yang Hong-Ming Zhu Jagadish K Chhetri | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,17: | 6 |

| 8 | Geochemical cycling during subduction initiation:Evidence from serpentinized mantle wedge peridotite in the south Andaman ophiolite suite显示文摘The ophiolite suite from south Andaman Islands forms part of the Tethyan Ophiolite Belt and preserves the remnants of an ideal ophiolite sequence comprising a basal serpentinized and tectonised mantle peridotite followed by ultramafic and mafic cumulate units, basaltic dykes and spilitic pillow basalts interlayered with arkosic wacke. Here, we present new major, trace, rare earth(REE) and platinum group(PGE) element data for serpentinized and metasomatized peridotites(dunites) exposed in south Andaman representing the tectonized mantle section of the ophiolite suite. Geochemical features of the studied rocks, marked by Al_2 O_3/TiO_2 > 23, LILE-LREE enrichment, HFSE depletion, and U-shaped chondrite-normalized REE patterns with(La/Sm)N > 1 and(Gd/Yb)N <1, suggest contributions from boninitic mantle melts. These observations substantiate a subduction initiation process ensued by rapid slab roll-back with extension and seafloor spreading in an intraoceanic fore-arc regime. The boninitic composition of the serpentinized peridotites corroborate fluid and melt interaction with mantle manifested in terms of(i) hydration, metasomatism and serpentinization of depleted, MORB-type, sub-arc wedge mantle residual after repeated melt extraction; and(ii) refertilization of refractory mantle peridotite by boninitic melts derived at the initial stage of intraoceanic subduction. Serpentinized and metasomatized mantle dunites in this study record both MOR and intraoceanic arc signatures collectively suggesting suprasubduction zone affinity. The elevated abundances of Pd(4.4-12.2 ppb) with highΣPPGE/∑IPGE(2-3) and Pd/Ir(2-5.5) ratios are in accordance with extensive melt-rock interaction through percolation of boninitic melts enriched in fluid-fluxed LILE-LREE into the depleted mantle after multiple episodes of melt extraction. The high Pd contents with relatively lower Ir concentrations of the samples are analogous to characteristic PGE signatures of boninitic magmas and might have resulted by the infiltration of boninitic melts into the depleted and residual mantle wedge peridotite during fore-arc extension at the initial stage of intraoceanic subduction. The PGE patterns with high Os + Ir(2-8.6 ppb)and Ru(2.8-8.4 ppb) also suggest mantle rejuvenation by infiltration of melts derived by high degree of mantle melting. | 9 | Hepatoprotective activity of Hepax-A polyherbal formulation显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the hepatoprotective potential of Hepax,a polyherbal formulation,against three experimentally induced hepatotoxicity models in rats.Methods:Hepatoprotective activity of Hepax was studied against three experimentally induced hepatotoxicity models,namely, carbon tetrachloride(CCl_4),paracetamol and thiocetamide induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Results:Administration of hepatotoxins(CCl_4,paracetamol and thiocetamide) showed significant morphological,biochemical and histological deteriorations in the liver of experimental animals. These germ cell specific proteins exhibit aberrant expression in cancer cells and contribute in tumorigenesis. Owing to their unique expression profile and immunogenicity in cancer patients, cancer testis antigens are clinically referred as the most promising tumor associated antigens. Several cancer testis antigens have been studied in colorectal cancer but none of them could be used in clinical practice. | 13 | Gene expression profile of esophageal cancer in North East India by cDNA microarray analysis显示文摘AIM: To identify alterations in genes and molecular functional pathways in esophageal cancer in a high incidence region of India where there is a widespread use of tobacco and betel quid with fermented areca nuts. METHODS: Total RNA was isolated from tumor and matched normal tissue of 16 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Pooled tumor tissue RNA was labeled with Cy3-dUTP and pooled normal tissue RNA was labeled with Cy5-dUTP by direct labeling method. The labeled probes were hybridized with human 10K cDNA chip and expression profiles were analyzed by Genespring GX V 7.3 (Silicon Genetics). RESULTS: Nine hundred twenty three genes were differentially expressed. Of these, 611 genes were upregulated and 312 genes were downregulated. Using stringent criteria (P ≤ 0.05 and ≥ 1.5 fold change), 127 differentially expressed genes (87 upregulated and 40 downregulated) were identified in tumor tissue. On the basis of Gene Ontology, four different molecular functional pathways (MAPK pathway, G-protein coupled receptor family, ion transport activity, and serine or threonine kinase activity) were most significantly upregulated and six different molecular functional pathways (structural constituent of ribosome, endopeptidase inhibitor activity, structural constituent of cytoskeleton, antioxidant activity, acyl group transferase activity, eukaryotic translation elongation factor activity) were most significantly downregulated. CONCLUSION: Several genes that showed alterations in our study have also been reported from a high incidence area of esophageal cancer in China. Cogn.against chemically induced liver injuries in rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate hepatoprotective activity of ethanol extract of Melothria heterophyila Lour Cogn.(EEMH) against CCl4-induced hepatic damage in rats.Methods:β-sitosterol was isolated by column chromatography and characterized spectroscopically.Two different doses(200 and 400 mg/kg bw) of EEMH were administered orally in alternate days.The hepatoprotective activity was studied in liver by measuring biochemical parameters such as serum aspartate amino transferase(AST),alanine amino transferase(ALT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP),total protein and total bilirubin.Lipid peroxidation product and different antioxidant enzyme activities were assessed in liver homogenate.Results:EEMH reduced all biochemical parameters and lipid peroxidation,as well as it increased the antioxidant enzyme activities in comparison with silymarin.The protective effect of the extract on CCl4 induced damage was confirmed by histopathological examination of the liver.Conclusions:This result strongly supports the protective effect of EEMH against acute liver injury,and may be attributed to its antioxidative activity. | Arijit Mondal Tapan Kumar Maity Dilipkumar Pal Santanu Sannigrahi Jagadish Singh | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,8: | 2 |
