2Insights on the solubilization products after combined alkaline and ultrasonic pre-treatment of sewage sludge显示文摘This work provides insights on the solubilization products after a simultaneous combination of alkaline and ultrasonic(ALK + ULS) pre-treatment of sewage sludge.Soluble chemical oxygen demand(SCOD) increased from 1200 to 11,000 mg/L after such treatment. Organics with molecular weight around 5.6 k Da were solubilized because of the synergistic effect of ultrasound and alkali. Organics with molecular weight larger than300 k Da increased from 7.8% to 60%, 16% and 42.3% after ULS, ALK and ALK + ULS treatment, respectively. Excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy analysis identified soluble microbial product-like and humic acid-like matters as the main solubilization products. Sludge anaerobic biodegradability was significantly enhanced with the simultaneous application of ALK + ULS pre-treatment. ALK + ULS pre-treatment resulted in 37.8% biodegradability increase compared to the untreated sludge. 3Nitrous oxide emission by denitrifying phosphorus removal culture using polyhydroxyalkanoates as carbon source显示文摘Nitrous oxide(N2O) emission has been reported to be enhanced during denitrification when internally-stored compounds are used as carbon sources.However,negligible N2O emissions have been detected in the few studies where polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) were specifically used.This study investigated and compared the potential enhancement of N2O production,based on utilization of an internally-stored polymer and external carbon(acetate) by a denitrifying phosphorus removal culture.Results indicated that at relatively low chemical oxygen demand-to-nitrogen(COD/N) ratios,more nitrite was reduced to N2O in the presence of an external carbon source as compared to an internal carbon source(PHA).At relatively higher COD/N ratios,similar N2O reduction rates were obtained in all cases regardless of the type of carbon source available.N2O reduction rates were,however,generally higher in the presence of an internal carbon source.Results from the study imply that when the presence of an external carbon source is not sufficient to support denitrification,it is likely competitively utilized by different metabolic pathways of denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms(DPAOs) and other ordinary denitrifiers.This study also reveals that the consumption of PHA is potentially the rate-limiting step for N2O reduction during denitrification.Yan Zhou Melvin Lim Soekendro Harjono Wun Jern Ng 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,9:17
4Application of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment in tropical and subtropical regions(2000–2013)显示文摘Constructed wetlands(CWs) have been successfully used for treating various wastewaters for decades and have been identified as a sustainable wastewater management option for developing countries. With the goal of promoting sustainable engineered systems that support human well-being but are also compatible with sustaining natural(environmental)systems, the application of CWs has become more relevant. Such application is especially significant for developing countries with tropical climates, which are very conducive to higher biological activity and productivity, resulting in higher treatment efficiencies compared to those in temperate climates. This paper therefore highlights the practice,applications, and research of treatment wetlands under tropical and subtropical conditions since 2000. In the present review, removal of biochemical oxygen demand(BOD) and total suspended solid(TSS) was shown to be very efficient and consistent across all types of treatment wetlands. Hybrid systems appeared more efficient in the removal of total suspended solid(TSS)(91.3%), chemical oxygen demand(COD)(84.3%), and nitrogen(i.e.,80.7% for ammonium(NH)4-N, 80.8% for nitrate(NO)3-N, and 75.4% for total nitrogen(TN))as compared to other wetland systems. Vertical subsurface flow(VSSF) CWs removed TSS(84.9%), BOD(87.6%), and nitrogen(i.e., 66.2% for NH4-N, 73.3% for NO3-N, and 53.3% for TN)more efficiently than horizontal subsurface flow(HSSF) CWs, while HSSF CWs(69.8%)showed better total phosphorus(TP) removal compared to VSSF CWs(60.1%). 5Determination of the archaeal and bacterial communities in two-phase and single-stage anaerobic systems by 454 pyrosequencing显示文摘2-Phase anaerobic digestion(AD), where the acidogenic phase was operated at 2 day hydraulic retention time(HRT) and the methanogenic phase at 10 days HRT, had been evaluated to determine if it could provide higher organic reduction and methane production than the conventional single-stage AD(also operated at 12 days HRT). 454 pyrosequencing was performed to determine and compare the microbial communities. The acidogenic reactor of the 2-phase system yielded a unique bacterial community of the lowest richness and diversity, while bacterial profiles of the methanogenic reactor closely followed the single-stage reactor. All reactors were predominated by hydrogenotrophic methanogens, mainly Methanolinea. Unusually, the acidogenic reactor contributed up to 24%of total methane production in the 2-phase system. This could be explained by the presence of Methanosarcina and Methanobrevibacter, and their activities could also help regulate reactor alkalinity during high loading conditions through carbon dioxide production. The enrichment of hydrolytic and acidogenic Porphyromonadaceae, Prevotellaceae, Ruminococcaceae and unclassified Bacteroidetes in the acidogenic reactor would have contributed to the improved sludge volatile solids degradation, and ultimately the overall 2-phase system's performance. Syntrophic acetogenic microorganisms were absent in the acidogenic reactor but present in the downstream methanogenic reactor, indicating the retention of various metabolic pathways also found in a single-stage system. 6Impact of ozone assisted ultrasonication pre-treatment on anaerobic digestibility of sewage sludge显示文摘Impact of ultrasonication(ULS) and ultrasonication–ozonation(ULS-Ozone) pre-treatment on the anaerobic digestibility of sewage sludge was investigated with semi-continuous anaerobic reactors at solid retention time(SRT) of 10 and 20 days. The control, ULS and ULS-Ozone reactors produced 256, 309 and 348 m L biogas/g CODfedand the volatile solid(VS) removals were 35.6%, 38.3% and 42.1%, respectively at SRT of 10 days. At SRT of20 days, the biogas yields reached 313, 337 and 393 m L biogas/g CODfedand the VS removal rates were 37.3%, 40.9% and 45.3% in the control, ULS and ULS-Ozone reactors, respectively.ULS-Ozone pre-treatment increased the residual organic amount in the digested sludge.These soluble residual organics were found to contain macromolecules with molecular weights(MW) larger than 500 k Da and smaller polymeric products with MW around 19.4and 7.7 k Da.
