1Municipal wastewater treatment in China:Development history and future perspectives显示文摘China has the world's largest and still growing wastewater sector and water market, thus its future development will have profound influence on the world. The high-speed development of China's wastewater sector over the past 40 years has forged its global leading treatment capacity and innovation ability. However, many problems were left behind, including underdeveloped sewers and sludge disposal facilities, low sustainability of the treatment processes, questionable wastewater treatment plant(WWTP)effluent discharge standards, and lacking global thinking on harmonious development between wastewater management, human society and the nature.Addressing these challenges calls for fundamental changes in target design, policy and technologies. In this mini-review,we revisit the development history of China's municipal wastewater management and identify the remaining challenges. Also,we highlight the future needs of sustainable development and exploring China's own wastewater management path, and outlook the future from several aspects including targets of wastewater management, policies and technologies, especially the new concept WWTP.Furthermore,we envisage the establishment of new-generation WWTPs with the vision of turning WWTP from a site of pollutant removal into a plant of energy, water and fertilizer recovery and an integrated part urban ecology in China.Jiuhui Qu Hongchen Wang Kaijun Wang Gang Yu Bing Ke Han-Qing Yu Hongqiang Ren Xingcan Zheng Ji Li Wen-Wei Li Song Gao Hui Gong 2019Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2019,13,6:13
2Hurricane eye morphology extraction from SAR images by texture analysis显示文摘Tropical hurricanes are among the most devastating hazards on Earth.Knowledge about its intense inner-core structure and dynamics will improve hurricane forecasts and advisories. The precise morphological parameters extracted from high-resolution spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR)images, can play an essential role in further exploring and monitoring hurricane dynamics, especially when hurricanes undergo amplification, shearing, eyewall replacements and so forth. Moreover, these parameters can help to build guidelines for wind calibration of the more abundant, but lower resolution scatterometer wind data, thus better linking scatterometer wind fields to hurricane categories. In this paper,we develop a new method for automatically extracting the hurricane eyes from C-band SAR data by constructing Gray Level-Gradient Co-occurrence Matrices(GLGCMs).The hurricane eyewall is determined with a two-dimensional vector, generated by maximizing the class entropy of the hurricane eye region in GLGCM.The results indicate that when the hurricane is weak,or the eyewall is not closed, the hurricane eye extracted with this automatic method still agrees with what is observed visually, and it preserves the texture characteristics of the original image. As compared to Du’s wavelet analysis method and other morphological analysis methods, the approach developed here has reduced artefacts due to factors like hurricane size and has lower programming complexity. In summary, the proposed method provides a new and elegant choice for hurricane eye morphology extraction.Weicheng NI Ad STOFFELEN Kaijun REN 2022Frontiers of Earth Science2022,16,1:2

4Immediate and legacy effects of snow exclusion on soil fungal diversity and community composition显示文摘Background:Soil fungi play crucial roles in ecosystem functions. However, how snow cover change associated with winter warming affects soil fungal communities remains unclear in the Tibetan forest. Methods:We conducted a snow manipulation experiment to explore immediate and legacy effects of snow exclusion on soil fungal community diversity and composition in a spruce forest on the eastern Tibetan Plateau.Soil fungal communities were performed by the high throughput sequencing of gene-fragments.Results:Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the two dominant fungal phyla and Archaeorhizomyces,Aspergillus and Amanita were the three most common genera across seasons and snow manipulations.Snow exclusion did not affect the diversity and structure of soil fungal community in both snow-covered and snow-free seasons. However, the relative abundance of some fungal communities was different among seasons.Soil fungal groups were correlated with environmental factors(i.e.,temperature and moisture)and soil biochemical variables(i.e.,ammonium and enzyme). Conclusions:These results suggest that the season-driven variations had stronger impacts on soil fungal community than short-term snow cover change.Such findings may have important implications for soil microbial processes in Tibetan forests experiencing significant decreases in snowfall.Li Zhang Yuzhi Ren Kaijun Yang Zhijie Li Bo Tan Yang Liu Han Li Chengming You Sining Liu Lixia Wang Rui Yin Jian Zhang Zhenfeng Xu 2021Forest Ecosystems2021,8,2:1
