1Vitamin A administration at birth promotes calf growth and intramuscular fat development in Angus beef cattle显示文摘Background: Marbling, or intramuscular fat, is an important factor contributing to the palatability of beef. Vitamin A, through its active metabolite, retinoic acid, promotes the formation of new fat cells(adipogenesis). As intramuscular adipogenesis is active during the neonatal stage, we hypothesized that vitamin A administration during the neonatal stage would enhance intramuscular adipogenesis and marbling.Methods: Angus steer calves(n = 30), in a completely randomized design, were randomly allotted to three treatment groups at birth, receiving 0, 150,000, or 300,000 IU of vitamin A at both birth and one month of age.A biopsy of the biceps femoris muscle was collected at two months of age. After weaning at 210 d of age, steers were fed a backgrounding diet in a feedlot until 308 d of age, when they were transitioned to a high concentrate finishing diet and implanted with trenbolone/estradiol/tylosin mixture. Steers were harvested at an average of 438 d of age. All diets were formulated to meet nutrient requirements.Results: Weaning weight and weight during the backgrounding phase were linearly increased(P < 0.05) by vitamin A level, though no difference in body weight was observed at harvest. Intramuscular fat of steers at 308 d of age, measured by ultrasound, quadratically increased(P < 0.05) with vitamin A level from 4.0±0.26 % to 4.9±0.26 %.Similarly, carcass marbling score in the ribeye quadratically increased(P < 0.05).Conclusion: Administration of vitamin A at birth increased weaning weight and enhanced marbling fat development.Thus, vitamin A administration provides a practical method for increasing marbling and early growth of beef cattle.Corrine L.Harris Bo Wang Jeneane M.Deavila Jan R.Busboom Martin Maquivar Steven M.Parish Brent McCann Mark L.Nelson Min Du 2018Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2018,9,4:7
2Whole-blood sorting,enrichment and in situ immunolabeling of cellular subsets using acoustic microstreaming显示文摘Analyzing undiluted whole human blood is a challenge due to its complex composition of hematopoietic cellular populations,nucleic acids,metabolites,and proteins.We present a novel multi-functional microfluidic acoustic streaming platform that enables sorting,enrichment and in situ identification of cellular subsets from whole blood.This single device platform,based on lateral cavity acoustic transducers(LCAT),enables(1)the sorting of undiluted donor whole blood into its cellular subsets(platelets,RBCs,and WBCs),(2)the enrichment and retrieval of breast cancer cells(MCF-7)spiked in donor whole blood at rare cell relevant concentrations(10 mL^(−1)),and(3)on-chip immunofluorescent labeling for the detection of specific target cellular populations by their known marker expression patterns.Our approach thus demonstrates a compact system that integrates upstream sample processing with downstream separation/enrichment,to carry out multi-parametric cell analysis for blood-based diagnosis and liquid biopsy blood sampling.Neha Garg Trisha M.Westerhof Vick Liu Robin Liu Edward L.Nelson Abraham P.Lee 2018Microsystems & Nanoengineering2018,4,1:3

4Discharge-Stage Relationship on Urban Streams Evaluated at USGS Gauging Stations,St.Louis,Missouri显示文摘Extensive USGS data tables and detailed,1 m2 Li DAR surveys are used to determine the optimal power n that relates discharge(Q)to stage(h*)above channel bottom(ho)at 39 gauging stations on small streams in the St.Louis,Missouri area,all of which have catchments of 0.6 to 220 km2.Four different methodologies are employed to determine both n and ho:(1)optimizing linearity in a plot of Q1/n vs.local stage(hL)using USGS field measurements at each site;(2)optimizing linearity in a plot of Q1/n vs.hL using USGS rating tables at each site;(3)a mathematical inverse method applied to the same USGS rating tables;(4)use of Li DAR data on channel geometry to determine the power dependences of channel area A and hydraulic radius H on h*,combined with the Manning and rational equations to predict n.Of these methods,only methods 2 and 3 compare favorably,and these values compare poorly with Method 1 based on field data,and with method 4 based on theoretical and empirical relationships.Because Method 4 is predictive,it provides a useful alternative to methods 1–3 that are based on USGS field measurements,which are heavily weighted toward low discharges.We conclude that the apparent values of n in the USGS rating tables are systematically too low for small streams.Robert E.Criss David L.Nelson 2020Journal of Earth Science2020,31,6:1

6In-vivo evaluation of molybdenum as bioabsorbable stent candidate显示文摘Biodegradable stents have tremendous theoretical potential as an alternative to bare metal stents and drug-eluting stents for the treatment of obstructive coronary artery disease.Any bioresorbable or biodegradable scaffold material needs to possess optimal mechanical properties and uniform degradation behavior that avoids local and systemic toxicity.Recently,molybdenum(Mo)has been investigated as a potential novel biodegradable material for this purpose.With its proven moderate degradation rate and excellent mechanical properties,Mo may represent an ideal source material for clinical cardiac and vascular applications.The present study was performed to evaluate the mechanical performance of metallic Mo in vitro and the biodegradation properties in vivo.The results demonstrated favorable mechanical behavior and a uniform degradation profile as desired for a new generation ultra-thin degradable endovascular stent material.Moreover,Mo implants in mouse arteries avoided the typical cellular response that contributes to restenosis.There was minimal neointimal hyperplasia over 6 months,an absence of excessive smooth muscle cell(SMC)proliferation or inflammation near the implant,and avoidance of significant harm to regenerating endothelial cells(EC).Qualitative inspection of kidney sections showed a potentially pathological remodeling of kidney Bowman’s capsule and glomeruli,indicative of impaired filtering function and development of kidney disease,although quantifications of these morphological changes were not statistically significant.Together,the results suggest that the products of Mo corrosion may exert beneficial or inert effects on the activities of inflammatory and arterial cells,while exerting potentially toxic effects in the kidneys that warrant further investigation.Malgorzata Sikora-Jasinska Lea M.Morath Maria P.Kwesiga Margaret E.Plank Alexia L.Nelson Alexander A.Oliver Martin L.Bocks Roger J.Guillory II Jeremy Goldman 2022Bioactive Materials2022,7,8:1

9Field report:Exploring the Doonerak fenster of the central Brooks Range,Alaska,USA显示文摘Arctic Alaska is a 'suspect' terrane that encompasses approximately 20%of Alaska,stretching from the southern Brooks Range all the way to the continental shelves of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.Although the origin and subsequent travels of this large crustal fragment are debated among geologists,most researchers agree upon its composite nature and exotic origin.To constrain the early geological history of this terrane,we describe a recent expedition to the Doonerak fenster of the central Brooks Range.This area has long been regarded as a key locality for understanding the structural evolution of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic Brooks Range orogen;however,our target was different:a unique sequence of volcanic and siliciclastic rocks(Apoon assemblage) exposed beneath a profound pre-Mississippian unconformity,which we argue is of key importance to understanding the early Paleozoic tectonic history of northern Alaska and the greater Arctic.Justin V.Strauss Carl W.Hoiland Lyle L.Nelson 2017Geoscience Frontiers2017,8,4:0
