Progress of Chinese zooplankton ecology research in Prydz Bay, Antarctica显示文摘Zooplankton are considered an important trophic link between primary producers and higher trophic level species in the Southern Ocean ecosystem. Since 1989, when the Chinese Antarctic Zhongshan Station was built, zooplankton have regularly been sampled and investigated in Prydz Bay through oceanographic surveys of each Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition. This review summarizes the main results from zooplankton ecology studies conducted in Prydz Bay by Chinese researchers. Major topics covered in this review are:(1) a description of the biology and ecology of Antarctic krill(Euphausia superba), the key zooplankton species of the Southern Ocean ecosystem;(2) zooplankton community structure, including the horizontal distribution in the epipelagic region and vertical distribution between 0-1500 m;(3) feeding ecology of dominant species such as Antarctic krill, salps and copepods;(4) a short introduction to the molecular research; and(5) prospects for future research. | LI Chaolun YANG Guang | 2017 | Advances in Polar Science2017,28,2: | 4
Effects of nutrient limitations on three species of zooplankton显示文摘Nutrient imbalance—a mismatch in nutrient ratios between the available food supply and the demands of consumers—has the potential to be transported up food chains, exposing zooplankton to nutrient limitations. In this study, the response of Calanus sinicus(copepod),Moina mongolica(cladocera),and Brachionus plicatilis(rotifer) to nutrient-limited(no-limited,P-limited,and N-limited) food were evaluated from the perspective of growth, reproduction, and stoichiometric homoeostasis. The results indicated that the growth of three species was suppressed under nutrient-limited(especially P-limited) conditions. However, the effect of nutrient limitations on their reproduction was species-specific.For C.sinicus, the dietary UFA(unsaturated fatty acid) as a major phospholipid component affected their egg production and total FA supporting energy promoted the hatchability of eggs.Furthermore, excess carbon in the diet promoted egg production but reduced hatching success. For M.mongolica, nutritional(P and UFA) and energy(total FA) support affected their fecundity.B.plicatilis fecundity exhibited the same pattern of growth(no-limited>N-limited>P-limited).In terms of stoichiometric homeostasis,B.plicatilis' s elemental compositions were less likely to be affected by nutrient limitations than M.mongolica.We suggest that the effects of nutrient imbalances could potentially become an evolutionary force affecting ecosystem structure and stability in eutrophic waters. | CHEN Lei LI Chaolun ZHOU Konglin SHI Yongqiang LIU Mengtan | 2018 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2018,37,4: | 4
Changes in the population structure of Calanus sinicus during summer–autumn in the southern Yellow Sea显示文摘Calanus sinicus is a calanoid copepod widely distributed in coastal waters of China and Japan, and oversummering strategies may have major impacts on their population dynamics which in turn affect local marine food web structure. The abundance, stage composition, and sex composition of the planktonic copepod C. sinicus were studied from August to October 2002 in the southern Yellow Sea to understand how its population recovers from the over-summering state. Results showed that C. sinicus had low reproduction in August due to high temperature, except in waters near the Cheju Island with rich food and moderate bottom temperature, but the reproduction rates here decreased in September–October as food availability declined. When temperature dropped in September–October, C. sinicus actively propagated in coastal shallow waters. However, reproduction rates of C. sinicus individuals inhabiting the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass(YSCWM) remained low during the three months of the study. The percentage of C. sinicus females was high during the reproductive period, which suggests that the sex composition of adult C. sinicus may reflect whether or not the population is in the reproductive mode.Numerous fifth copepodite stage(CV) C. sinicus aggregated in the YSCWM in a suspended developmental stage during the three months of this study, and they potentially served as the parental individuals for population development when conditions became optimal for reproduction later in the year. | Yongqiang Shi Song Sun Chaolun Li Guangtao Zhang Bo Yang Peng Ji | 2019 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,8: | 2
Bacterial and archaeal community structures in the Arctic deepsea sediment显示文摘Microbial community structures in the Arctic deep-sea sedimentary ecosystem are determined by organic matter input, energy availability, and other environmental factors. However, global warming and earlier ice-cover melting are affecting the microbial diversity. To characterize the Arctic deep-sea sediment microbial diversity and its relationship with environmental factors, we applied Roche 454 sequencing of 16 S r DNA amplicons from Arctic deep-sea sediment sample. Both bacterial and archaeal communities' richness, compositions and structures as well as taxonomic and phylogenetic affiliations of identified clades were characterized. Phylotypes relating to sulfur reduction and chemoorganotrophic lifestyle are major groups in the bacterial groups; while the archaeal community is dominated by phylotypes most closely related to the ammonia-oxidizing Thaumarchaeota(96.66%) and methanogenic Euryarchaeota(3.21%). This study describes the microbial diversity in the Arctic deep marine sediment(>3 500 m) near the North Pole and would lay foundation for future functional analysis on microbial metabolic processes and pathways predictions in similar environments. | LI Yan LIU Qun LI Chaolun DONG Yi ZHANG Wenyan ZHANG Wuchang XIAO Tian | 2015 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2015,34,2: | 2
DNA barcoding of Antarctic marine zooplankton for species identification and recognition显示文摘Polar zooplankton are particularly sensitive to climate change, and have been used as rapid-responders to indicate climate-induced changes in the fragile Antarctic ecosystem. DNA barcoding provides an alternative approach for rapid zooplankton species identification. Ninety-four specimens belonging to 32 Antarctic zooplankton species were barcoded to construct a comprehensive reference library. An 830 to 1 050 base-pair region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene was obtained as DNA barcodes. The intraspecific variation of the gene ranged from 0 to 2.6% (p-distance), with an average of 0.67% (SD=0.67%). The distance between species within the same genera ranged from 0.1% (Calanus) to 29.3%, with an average of 15.3% (SD=8.4%). The morphological and genetic similarities between Calanus propinquus and C. simillimus raise new questions about the taxonomic status of C. simillimus. With the exception of the two Calanus species, the intraspecific genetic divergence was much smaller than the interspecific divergence among congeneric species, confirming the existence of a barcode gap for Antarctic zooplankton. In addition, species other than Calanus sp. formed a monophyletic group. Therefore, we have confirmed DNA barcoding as an accurate and efficient approach for zooplankton identification in the Antarctic area (except for Hydromedusa, Tunicata, and other gelatinous zooplankton). Indicator vector analysis further confirmed this conclusion. The new primer sets issued here may facilitate the study of Antarctic marine zooplankton species composition by environmental metagenetic analysis. | CHENG Fangping WANG Minxiao SUN Song LI Chaolun ZHANG Yongshan | 2013 | Advances in Polar Science2013,24,2: | 2
Experimental clearance rates of Aurelia coerulea ephyrae and medusae, and the predation impact on zooplankton in Jiaozhou Bay显示文摘The population explosion of jellyfish Aurelia coerulea occurred in Jiaozhou Bay,China in 2009.The potential predation impact of A.coerulea on zooplankton was investigated.Population clearance potential and residence time(t 1/2)for copepods were calculated from laboratory clearance rates and measurements of jellyfish size and abundance from May to August 2009 in Jiaozhou Bay.Clearance rates varied widely with prey organisms, but they were not significantly different among various prey concentrations.Medusae captured rotifers, fish larvae and hydromedusae more efficiently than fish eggs, copepods and chaetognaths.Ephyrae captured rotifers and hydromedusae more efficiently than fish larvae and copepods.Clearance rate linearly increased with the cross sectional area of A.coerulea(size from 0.3 to 7.1 cm).Water temperature also had a marked effect on clearance rate and this was related to the increased beat frequency as water temperature increased. In early May 2009,A.coerulea potentially cleared the volume of water in the Bay less than 0.001 times a day,but this value was estimated to be more than 0.3 times a day in July. The t 1/2 for copepods was less than 6 d in June and July.Abundances of copepods, hydromedusae and chaetognaths were extremely low in 2009 compared to 2008 and 2010(jellyfish non-bloom years).Large predation pressure by the A.coerulea population occurred to control zooplankton communities in Jiaozhou Bay.A.coerulea,when present at a high population level, can be a keystone species in Jiaozhou Bay and control the trophic structure here. | WANG Pengpeng ZHANG Fang SUN Song WANG Weicheng WAN Aiyong LI Chaolun | 2020 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,4: | 1
Identification and characterization of endosymbiosis-related immune genes in deep-sea mussels Gigantidas platifrons显示文摘Deep-sea mussels of the subfamily Bathymodiolinae are common and numerically dominant species widely distributed in cold seeps and hydrothermal vents.During long-time evolution,deep-sea mussels have evolved to be well adapted to the local environment of cold seeps and hydrothermal vents by various ways, especially by establishing endosymbiosis with chemotrophic bacteria. However, biological processes underlying the establishment and maintenance of symbiosis between host mussels and symbionts are largely unclear. In the present study,Gigantidas platifrons genes possibly involved in the symbiosis with methane oxidation symbionts were identified and characterized by Lipopolysaccharide(LPS)pull-down and in situ hybridization.Five immune related proteins including Toll-like receptor 2(TLR2),integrin,vacuolar sorting protein(VSP),matrix metalloproteinase 1(MMP1),and leucine-rich repeat(LRR-1)were identified by LPS pull-down assay. These five proteins were all conserved in either molecular sequences or functional domains and known to be key molecules in host immune recognition, phagocytosis, and lysosome-mediated digestion.Furthermore,in situ hybridization of LRR-1,TLR2 and VSP genes was conducted to investigate their expression patterns in gill tissues of G.platifrons.Consequently,LRR-1,TLR2,and VSP genes were found expressed exclusively in the bacteriocytes of G.platifrons.Therefore,it was suggested that TLR2,integrin,VSP,MMP1,and LRR-1 might be crucial molecules in the symbiosis between G.platifrons and methane oxidation bacteria by participating in symbiosis-related immune processes. | LI Mengna CHEN Hao WANG Minxiao ZHONG Zhaoshan ZHOU Li LI Chaolun | 2020 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,4: | 1
Inductive eff ect of bioactive substances on strobilation of jellyfi sh Aurelia coerulea显示文摘The moon jellyfi sh Aurelia spp.is a worldwide distributed scyphozoan species that seasonally blooms in coastal waters.Although the strobilation is directly responsible for the scale of jellyfi sh bloom, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. We exposed Aurelia coerulea polyps to 18 bioactive substances to test their ability to induce strobilation at the natural typically non-strobilation temperature of 21°C.Results revealed that A.coerulea polyps responded in four types.Type I—no change for estradiol, folic acid, iodine, retinoic acid, serotonin hydrochloride, and vitamin A.We suggested that 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine and N-acetyl-L-glutamic acid could not induce strobilation, since the percent of strobilated polyps in these two substances treatments was 3.3%and 1%,respectively.Type II—polyp body elongation for 3,5-diiodo-Ltyrosine,indole-3-acetic acid,L-dopamine,and noradrenaline treatments.Type III—transverse constrictions for L-thyroxine,progesterone,and melatonin treatments. Finally,Type IV—complete strobilation for 5-methoxy-2-methylindole,acetylcholine chloride, and indomethacin treatments, where the pre-strobilation periods were 2,4,and 2 days, and the mean numbers of ephyrae released per strobila were 4.7,5.7,and 5.7,respectively.The results reveal that indole derivatives, which contained methoxy or methyl pharmacophore, were the common strobilation inducer in the genus Aurelia.Iodinated organic compounds, catecholamine, acetylcholine chloride, and retinoic acid are species-specifi c strobilation inducer.Therefore,A.coerulea strobilation is regulated by neuronal and endocrine processes. Our fi ndings provide clues in understanding the mechanism of strobilation and contribute to developing specifi c strobilation antagonists in controlling moon jellyfi sh blooms. | WANG Nan WANG Minxiao WANG Yantao LI Chaolun | 2020 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,5: | 1
Population distribution, structure and growth condition of Antarctic krill(Euphausia superba Dana) during the austral summer in the Southern Ocean显示文摘Antarctic krill(Euphausia superba Dana) was collected using a High Speed Collector and an Isaac–Kidd midwater trawl(IKMT) net during the austral summer of 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 in the circumpolar and Prydz Bay regions of the Southern Ocean, respectively. Combined with the simultaneous recording of environmental factors, spatial distribution, population structure and growth condition of E. superba were studied. The abundance of E. superba in the Weddell Sea was higher than in Prydz Bay. However, the abundance of E. superba in both the Weddell Sea and Prydz Bay was lower than figures reported in previous krill surveys for the same time period. With respect to the total study area, E. superba displayed a normal growing state during the two expeditions. E. superba grew relatively poorly in some stations, which may be due to the late retreat of sea ice or lower chlorophyll a concentrations. The number of juvenile E. superba collected using the High Speed Collector was proportionally greater in stations located at the edge of the sea ice, while adults dominated in long-term non-ice regions. This phenomenon refl ects the different distribution pattern between juvenile and adult krill. The population structure of E. superba differed between sea regions, which may affect recruitment. | SHI Yongqiang SUN Song LI Chaolun TAO Zhencheng | 2014 | Advances in Polar Science2014,25,3: | 1

Marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean:status and future显示文摘Marine protected areas(MPAs) in the Southern Ocean are receiving more and more global attention. The Southern Ocean is one of the world's last regions not yet seriously impacted by human activities, signifying its ecological importance and unique value for scientific research. In response to climate change and growing commercial fishing interests in the Southern Ocean and their impacts on the marine ecosystem, the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources(CCAMLR) is reacting to growing international pressure to establish a system of MPAs in the Southern Ocean to manage fisheries and conserve vital species—such as the keystone resource Antarctic krill and the dominant fish predator Antarctic toothfish—as well as to protect whole ecosystems. This review summarizes progress in the establishment of MPAs in the Southern Ocean by focusing on several major topics:(1) the current status of MPAs in the Southern Ocean;(2) the purpose and objective of MPAs in the Southern Ocean;(3) a short description of the largest high-sea MPA(the Ross Sea MPA);(4) ecological observation and monitoring for the planned MPAs in the Southern Ocean; and(5) the importance of international cooperation in the design, establishment and future management of MPAs in the Southern Ocean. | LI Chaolun YANG Guang | 2018 | Advances in Polar Science2018,29,4: | 1
Factors aff ecting lipid and fatty acid composition of Calanus sinicus in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea in spring显示文摘The factors aff ecting lipid and fatty acid composition of copepod Calanus sinicus in the Yellow Sea(YS)and the East China Sea(ECS)were examined in this study. In spring, there were signifi cant diff erences between these two regions for both environmental conditions and food availability.Such regional diff erence signifi cantly infl uenced the lipid and fatty acid profi les of C.sinicus.Our results show that C.sinicus has a higher lipids content in ECS,especially for wax ester and triglyceride lipids, indicating a more active and effi cient predation.According to BIO-ENV analysis, the variation of lipids profi les may be infl uenced majorly by water temperature. Moreover, the fatty acids(FAs)profi les of C.sinicus were also diff erent between YS and ECS,especially in the four major contributors,C22꞉1ω11,eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA),docosahexenoic acid(DHA),and C20꞉1ω9.The considerable amounts of self-biosynthesized FAs of herbivorous copepod(C22꞉1ω11 and C20꞉1ω9)and low DHA/EPA ratio may indicate that C.sinicus in ECS feed mainly on phytoplankton comparing to those in YS.The fatty acid profi les of C.sinicus were aff ected by the diff erences in food availability. | Yanqing WANG Zhencheng TAO Chaolun LI Mengtan LIU | 2022 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2022,40,1: | 1

Eyes of diff ering colors in Alvinocaris longirostris from deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems: genetic and molecular evidence of its formation mechanism显示文摘Coloration is an important phenotypic trait for multiple adaptive functions. It is interesting to fi nd white-eye(AW)and orange-eye(AO)phenotypes in the shrimp Alvinocaris longirostris inhabiting the deep-sea cold seep and hydrothermal vent areas of the northwestern Pacifi c.By comparative transcriptome analyses,1491 diff erentially expressed genes(DEGs)were identified between AW and AO.Among them, many DEGs were associated with immunity, antioxidation, and detoxifi cation. Two signifi cant enzyme encoding genes, xanthine dehydrogenase, and tryptophan oxidase involved in pigment biosynthesis pathways were up-regulated in AW and AO,respectively, which might be related to the diff erences of white and orange eye phenotypes. Moreover, single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)calling detected that genotypes of 28 SNP distributing in 14 unigenes were completely diff erent between AW and AO.Particularly, there were three and two non-synonymous mutations in immune genes crustin Pm5 and antimicrobial peptide, respectively. Results indicate that the diff erence in eye color is probably resulted from immune response to variable micro-environmental stressors encountered in the dispersal process of the shrimps, such as symbiotic microbes, pathogens, and toxic substances, and might be genetically fi xed at last. The suggested pathway preliminarily explained the formation mechanism of diff erent eye phenotypes in Alvinocaridid shrimps, providing a basis for further study on adaptive evolution of eyes in deep-sea chemosynthetic faunas. | Qian XIN Min HUI Chaolun LI Zhongli SHA | 2021 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2021,39,1: | 0
Ontogenetic diet shift in Antarctic krill(Euphausia superba)in the Prydz Bay:a stable isotope analysis显示文摘As one of the most common and dominant species in the Southern Ocean, Antarctic krill(Euphausia superba)play a significant role in food web structure and the process of energy flow. The diet of Antarctic krill in the Prydz Bay during austral summer of 2012/2013 was investigated and the ontogenetic shift in krill diet was evaluated using the stable isotope method. The nitrogen stable isotope values(δ^(15) N) of adults((2.78±0.58)‰) were much higher than those of juveniles((1.69±0.70)‰), whereas the carbon stable isotope values(δ^(13) C) of adults(–(28.26±1.08)‰) were slightly lower than those of juveniles(–(27.48±1.35)‰). Particulate organic matter(POM)from 0, 25, and 50 m depth combined(0/25/50 m) represented phytoplankton food items. The results showed that phytoplankton food items in surface water and mesozooplankton were two essential food items for Antarctic krill in the Prydz Bay during summer. POM(0/25/50 m) contributes 56%–69% and 26%–34% to the diet of juvenile and adult krill, respectively, whereas mesozooplankton composes 13%–34% and 58%–71% of the diet of juvenile and adult krill, respectively. Thus, an ontogenetic diet shift from POM(0/25/50 m), which consists mainly of phytoplankton, to a higher trophic level diet containing mesozooplankton, was detected. The capacity for adults to consume more zooplankton food items may minimize their food competition with juveniles, which rely mostly on phytoplankton food items. This suggests 'diet shift with ontogeny' which may somehow help krill keep their dietary energy budget balanced and well adapted to the Antarctic marine ecosystem as a dominant species. | ZHANG Ye LI Chaolun YANG Guang WANG Yanqing TAO Zhencheng ZHANG Yongshan WANG Aijun | 2017 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2017,36,12: | 0
Gametogenesis and reproductive traits of the cold-seep mussel Gigantidas platifrons in the South China Sea显示文摘Gigantidas platifrons(Bivalvia,Mytilidae),the dominant species at the Formosa cold seep, relies on methanotrophic symbionts dwelling in its gills for nutrition. The reproductive patterns of G.platifrons provide fundamental information for understanding the population recruitment of this species. However,we know very little about important processes in reproduction, such as gametogenesis and symbiotic bacteria transmission. To this end,we described the developmental patterns of the gonads from nine surveys and juvenile length-distribution from one-year larval traps and detected bacteria in gonad from G.platifrons samples. Our results show that G.platifrons is a functionally dioecious species. The reproduction of G.platifrons is discontinuous, with spawning maturity peak around the fourth quarter of the year. The seasonal reproduction of G.platifrons was further supported by the unimodal shell length distribution of the trapped juvenile mussels.Given the small oocyte size(48.99–70.14μm),which was comparable to that of coastal mussels,we proposed that G.platifrons developed via a free-living,planktotrophic larval stage before settlement. The blooms at the water surface can also supply the development of the planktonic larvae of G.platifrons.Meanwhile,no bacteria were observed in gonads, suggesting a horizontal symbiont transfer mode in this mussel.Collectively, these results provide fundamental biological information for an improved understanding of the early life history of G.platifrons in the Formosa cold seep. | ZHONG Zhaoshan WANG Minxiao CHEN Hao ZHENG Ping LI Chaolun | 2020 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,4: | 0
Effects of Liaoning Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant on the Zooplankton Community in Summer of 2017显示文摘To evaluate the effects of the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant on the zooplankton community in the surrounding seawater during summer, multiple environmental factors and zooplankton distribution along the east coast of Liaodong Bay were investigated in the summer of 2017. In particular, the influences of seawater temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll a(Chl a) on the zooplankton community were analyzed. Zooplankton abundances and Chl a concentrations along the east coast of Liaodong Bay showed an initial increase followed by a decrease from July to September. During the three months, the zooplankton abundance was the highest(8116.70 ind m^(-3)) in August. The Shannon-Wiener index showed a downtrend from July to September, with the average value falling from 1.65 in July to 1.50 in September. Calanus sinicus, Paracalanus parvus, copepodid, and bivalve larvae were the dominant species/groups in the three months. The effects of the nuclear power plant's outlet on the environment factors were mainly reflected in the increased seawater temperature. Redundancy analysis showed that the zooplankton community was jointly affected by seawater temperature, salinity and Chl a concentration, and the degree of this impact varied monthly. The impact of seawater temperature on the zooplankton community was stronger than that of salinity. The primary impact of the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant on the structure and distribution of the zooplankton community in the surrounding seawater during the summer was increased seawater temperature, which caused a reduction in the abundance of dominant species/groups. | WANG Junjian TAO Zhencheng WANG Yantao WEI Hao LIU Xin LI Chaolun | 2020 | Journal of Ocean University of China2020,19,5: | 0
Feeding strategies of Euphausia superba in the eastern South Shetland Islands in austral summer显示文摘Euphausia superba is a key species in the Southern Ocean that serves as a link between primary production and higher trophic levels. To investigate the feeding strategies of E.superba from the eastern South Shetland Islands, fatty acid biomarkers, stable isotope signatures, and an incubation experiment were conducted. The results of the incubation experiment proved that adult E.superba mainly fed on 2–20μm particles, demonstrating the importance of nanoplankton in their diet. Moreover, significant positive relationships betweenδ15N and body size demonstrated that size-related dietary shifts were present in E.superba.Evidence from principal component analysis and the C16:1ω7/C18:4ω3 ratio showed that juveniles preferentially fed on dinoflagellates and adults were more likely to feed on diatoms.Fatty acid profiles in adult E.superba roughly mirrored the different trophic conditions and feeding strategies between stations.Adult E.superba at Stas D2-07,D5-07,DA-01 and DA-02 exhibited elevated levels of C16:1ω7,C18:4ω3,C18:1ω9 and C18:1ω9/C18:1ω7,indicating higher levels of feeding on both phytoplankton and higher trophic diets. In contrast, adult E.superba at Stas D1-03 and D1-04 were characterized by high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids ratios and low levels of C16:1ω7,C18:1ω7,C18:4ω3,C18:1ω9 and total fatty acids. We inferred that adult krill at Stas D1-03 and D1-04 still suffered from difficult dietary conditions after overwintering. The different dietary conditions between stations suggest a highly plastic feeding strategy of E.superba in the eastern South Shetland Islands. | Mengtan Liu Zhencheng Tao Ye Zhang Guang Yang Song Sun Chaolun Li Fengfeng Le | 2019 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,10: | 0
