1Urban land expansion and arable land loss of the major cities in China in the 1990s显示文摘Based on the land-use data in 1990 and 2000, determined by interpreting Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery, this paper defines the extent of urban construction land, and extracts patches of urban construction land of 145 cities with the largest areas in 1990 and arable land patches around these cities. With these data, this paper analyzes the characteristics of ur- ban construction land expansion and the consequent arable land loss in East, Middle and West China, and further identifies the social, economic and spatial factors of the urban land use changes, using GIS (Geographical Information System) and multivariate regression approaches. The results show that total urban land of the 145 cities expanded by 39.8%, with about 70% of the new urban land converted from arable land in the 1990s. The urban land expansion varied among the three regions, with a value of 43.0% in the East, 33.1% in the West (33.1%) and 17.8% in the Middle. Moreover, mean urban construction land per capita increased by10.7% in the East, but it decreased by 7.7% in the Middle, 1.4% in the West. 2Change of Cultivated Land and Its Implications on Food Security in China显示文摘The population growth and demand for high living standard not only increase food demand but also cause more loss of the limited cultivated land resources.Cultivated land loss caused by disasters and the implementation of the “Conversion of Cropland to Forest or Grassland” project make this situation even worse in China.Thus,there is a problem to be solved imminently that to what extent the cultivated land can guarantee food security of China.Based on time-series data on food production and cultivated land area from 1989 to 2003 and other research results,this paper constructs quality index of cultivated land according to different land quality.Regression models are adopted to predicate changes of main factors from 2004 to 2030,which have great effect on cultivated land area or grain productivity,and verify accuracy with coefficient of determination(R2).Nine results were got according to three scenarios of decreasing rate of population growth rate and three cases of urban and rural built-up area per capita.There results show that China’s food supply can only be maintained at a low to middle level of 370-410kg per capita,that is,China has enough land productivity to meet primary demand of food independently.However,it cannot reach the safe target of 500kg per capita if there is no breakthrough in breeding or no remarkable improvement of irrigation works,when the grain self-sufficiency maintains no less than 80%.To breed productive crops and to improve land productivity by meliorating low quality cultivated land are appropriate measures to shrink the gap between food demand and supply.The results may offer helpful information for the formulation of policies on population growth,land use,protection of cultivated land.YU Bohua LU Changhe 2006Chinese Geographical Science2006,16,4:19

6Trends of Urban Air Pollution in Zhengzhou City in 1996-2008显示文摘Urban air pollution is a commonly concerned environmental problem in the world.Identification of air quality trend using long-term monitoring data is helpful to understand the effectiveness of pollution control strategies.This study,using data from six monitoring stations in Zhengzhou City,analyzed the changing trend in concentrations of SO 2,NO x /NO 2 and TSP/PM 10 in 1996-2008,based on non-parametric Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator,and evaluated the comprehensive air pollution level using Multi-Pollutant Index(MPI).It was found that the concentration of each pollutant exceeded obviously the World Health Organization(WHO) guideline value,but the changing trend varied:SO 2 and NO 2 were significantly increased mainly due to an increase in coal consumption and vehicle number,while NO x,TSP and PM 10 decreased.The air pollution was serious,and differed markedly among the three functional regions:it is the most severe in the Industrial and Residential Area(IRA),followed by the Transportation Hub and Business District(THBD),and then the High-tech,Cultural and Educational Area(HCEA).Different from NO 2 concentration that had a similar change trend/rate among the function regions,the change rate of PM 10 concentration differed spatially,decreased much more obviously in THBD than other two regions.For the whole city,the comprehensive air pollution level declined gradually,illustrating that the air quality in Zhengzhou was improved in the last decade.DU Xile LU Changhe WANG Hairong MA Jianhua 2012Chinese Geographical Science2012,22,4:6

8Impacts of Sloping Land Conversion Program on the vegetation in loess hilly and gully area of northern Shaanxi显示文摘Aiming at alleviating the serious soil erosion, the Chinese government initiated the Sloping Land Conversion Program (SLCP) in 1999. Now, after 8 years of project implementation, the ecological recovery effects of the SLCP have become the hot issue of academic circle. This paper, taking the loess hill and gully area of northern Shaanxi as an example, presents a methodology for assessing the vegetation restoration effect of SLCP with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The key components include calculation of the Growing Season NDVI (GSNDVI), and estimation of the NVDI change induced by climate and SLCP, respectively. Based on the method, the NDVI change between 2000 and 2006 was obtained using the GSNDVI that excluded the noise from snow and ice. After the part of total NDVI change caused by climate variation was estimated using empiric formulae, we obtained the part induced by human factors, i.e. the SLCP. The human induced part of NDVI change was considered as an approximation indicating the effect of the SLCP on the vegetation. Finally, we analyzed the NDVI change characters of the whole study area, different slope lands and different land use types by spatial statistics method. 16The SLCP-driven land use changes and farmers' responses in the loess hilly and gully region:a case study for Ansai County显示文摘Taking Ansai County located in loess hilly and gully area as a case,this study analyzes the land use changes driven by the SLCP(Slope Land Conversion Program)and the farmers'responses by household survey and participatory rapid appraisal(PRA).It is found that the SLCP aroused various changes in land use,agricultural production,rural incomes,etc.In the period of 1999-2005,the farmland and grasslands were reduced by 26,809 ha and 17,571 ha respectively,while forestland increased by 38,203 ha;greenhouse vegetable and orchard got a quick development,with the area enlarged by about 7 times and nearly doubled respectively.The SLCP reduced the area of crops particularly those that normally grown on slope lands,e.g.the sowing area of winter wheat dropped from 19.39% of the total cropping area in 1999 to 0.98%in 2005.Draught animals,pigs and sheep have a decline in the number because the remained land and the ban on grazing on natural grasslands can not provide sufficient feed forage.Thanks to the financial subsidy,farmers increased land inputs and thus outputs.To achieve long-term sustain-able development and improve rural income,the government should continuously support farmers to improve the land management,to adopt alternative land use systems,and to increase inputs on soil conservation.Vegetable and fruit production are two promise land use systems,and should be further developed.Wang Qian Lu Changhe Yu Bohua Ma Junfei 2009Ecological Economy2009,5,4:1

20Evaluation and Trend Analysis of Surface Water Quality in Zhengzhou in 1998-2008显示文摘Water pollution is one of the major environmental problems,especially in urban areas.Due to rapid urban expansion and industrialization,water pollution in Zhengzhou City,the capital of Henan Province in central China has become a serious problem for its development.In this study,the surface water quality was evaluated using Nemerow Comprehensive Pollution Index (NCPI),and the change trend was calculated using methods of Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator,based on the monitoring data from 1998 to 2008.The results show that the NCPI ranged from 3 to 50 in 70% of the monitoring cases,implying that most rivers were seriously polluted.However,this serious polltuon is expected to be gradually improved,as the concentration of water pollutants and NCPI declined significantly in most rivers.Water pollution in reservoirs was much lower than rivers,and the NCPI in the three monitored reservoirs was lower than 3 in most years,and shows a downward trend.Although the surface water quality was gradually improved,great efforts are still needed to enhance the protection and improvement of surface water environment.Du Xile Lu Changhe 2012Chinese Journal of Population,Resources and Environment2012,10,4:1
