| 1 | Do anogenital gland secretionsof giant panda code for their sexual ability?显示文摘To test the hypothesis of whether ano- genital gland secretions (AGS) of giant panda code for their sexual ability, we collected AGS samples of 11 male (5 adult and 6 subadult) and 14 female (7 adult and 7 subadult) captive giant pandas (Ailuro- poda melanoleuca) from China Research and Con- servation Center for the Giant Panda at Wolong, Si- chuan, China from 1994 to 2002. The samples were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The GC results showed that male and female pandas shared 20 constituents with equal capacity factors in the AGS. Further GC-MS analyses showed that there were a total of 95 compounds in the AGS. Nine constituents for the males and three for the females differed significantly in relative abundances between sexually active and inactive individuals, but no clear division between sexually active and inactive pandas by hierarchical cluster analyses on the relative abundances of a subset of 56 compounds. However, we were able to separate different age groups of male pandas by the constituents of AGS. 14 compounds were found sig- nificantly and negatively, and 8 compounds positively, correlated with pandas’ age by year. Our results suggest that the information contained in the AGS of panda might not code for pandas’ sexual ability but might for their age. | 2 | Male panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) urine contains kinship information显示文摘Chemical communication plays an important role in kin selection and mate choice in mammals. The covariance of odor-genes of rodents has been documented and kinship odor has been proposed and termed, yet little is known of the relationship between genetic relatedness and chemical composition of kinship odors. Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) rely substantially on chemical communication to mediate their social interactions. To examine the relationship between genetic relatedness and compounds in the urine/anogenital gland secretions, we compared the similarities between genetic relatedness and the chemical profiles of anogenital gland secretions and urine via lineage construction and GC-MS (gas chromatography and mass spectrometry). We found that information about kinship odors was present only in the urine of male adults in the mating season but absent in the non-mating season. Adult females and all sub-adults did not have such kinship odors in either mating or non-mating season. Therefore, kinship odor in the panda was contingent on age, sex, and season. | 4 | Uropygial gland volatiles may code for olfactory information about sex,individual,and species in Bengalese finches Lonchura striata显示文摘Over-shadowed by eye-catching vocal and visual signals,chemical communication has long been overlooked in birds.This study aimed at exploring whether volatile composition of the uropygial gland secretion(UGS)of birds was associated with the information about sex,individual and species.By using dichloromethane extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS),we analyzed the UGS volatiles of domesticated Bengalese finches(Lonchura striata,Estrildiea)which is also known as white-rumped munias.We characterized 16 volatile molecules from the UGS,including eight n-alkanols,five diesters,an ester,an aldehyde and a fatty acid,and quantified them in terms of GC peak area percentages(relative abundances).Among these compounds,hexadecanol and octadecanol were major components in both sexes.The former was richer in males than in females and the latter richer in females than in males,suggesting that they might be male and female pheromone candidates,respectively.The high inter-individual variations,in relative abundance,of the UGS volatiles implied that these compounds might carry information about individuality.The similarity between GC profiles of the UGS and wing feather from same individuals indicates that the birds might preen the secretion to their feathers to transmit chemical cues.Additionally,by comparing with three sympatric passerine species,i.e.,zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata,yellow-bowed buntings Emberiza chrysophrys and rooks Corvus frugilegus,we found that the composition of C_ 13-C_ 18 alkanols in the UGS might code for information about species.Our study also showed that quantitative differences(degree)of same UGS volatiles might be the key for the Bengalese finch to code for information about sex and individuality whereas both the kind and degree of UGS constituents could be utilized to code for information about species. | Jian-Xu ZHANG Lixing SUN Ming-Xue ZUO | 2009 | Current Zoology2009,55,5: | 6 |

| 12 | Evaluation of maize root growth and genome-wide association studies of root traits in response to low nitrogen supply at seedling emergence显示文摘Nitrogen(N) deficiency is one of the main factors limiting maize(Zea mays L.) productivity. Genetic improvement of root traits could improve nitrogen use efficiency. An association panel of 461 maize inbred lines was assayed for root growth at seedling emergence under high-nitrate(HN, 5 mmol L^(-1))and low-nitrate(LN, 0.05 mmol L^(-1)) conditions. Twenty-one root traits and three shoot traits were measured. Under LN conditions, the root-to-shoot ratio, root dry weight, total root length, axial root length,and lateral root length on the primary root were all increased. Under LN conditions, the heritability of the plant traits ranged from 0.43 to 0.82, a range much wider than that of 0.27 to 0.55 observed under HN conditions. The panel was genotyped with 542,796 high-density single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) markers. Totally 328 significant SNP markers were identified using either mixed linear model(MLM) or general linear model analysis, with 34 detected by both methods. In the 100-kb intervals flanking these SNP markers, four candidate genes were identified. Under LN conditions, the protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase 2 gene was associated with total root surface area and the DELLA protein-encoding gene was associated with the length of the visible lateral root zone of the primary root. Under HN conditions, a histone deacetylase gene was associated with plant height. Under both LN and HN conditions, the gene encoding MA3 domain-containing protein was associated with the first whorl crown root number. | 16 | Platinum nanoparticles supported MoS2 nanosheet for simultaneous detection of dopamine and uric acid显示文摘Herein, platinum nanoparticles-decorated molybdenum disulfide(Pt NPs@MoS_2) nanocomposite has been synthesized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, which was characterized by transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and powder X-ray diffraction(XRD). This MoS_2-based nanocomposite modified glass carbon electrode(Pt NPs@MoS_2/GCE) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward dopamine(DA) and uric acid(UA) due to their synergistic effect. Two well-defined oxidation peaks of DA and UA were obtained at Pt NPs@MoS_2/GCE with a large peak separation of 160 m V(DA-UA), suggesting that the modified electrode could individually or simultaneously analyze DA and AA. Under the optimal conditions, the peak currents of DA and UA were linearly dependent on their concentrations in the range of 0.5–150 and 5–1000 mmol/L with detection limit of 0.17 and 0.98 mmol/L, respectively. The proposed MoS_2-based sensor can also be employed to examine DA and UA in real samples with satisfactory results.
