| 1 | Finite-time adaptive consensus of a class of multi-agent systems显示文摘Multi-agent systems(MASs) are ubiquitous in natural and artificial systems. This paper aims to establish the finite-time adaptive consensus criterion for a class of MASs with nonlinear dynamics. Traditionally, the finite-time consensus criterion is often established based on the prior information on Lipschitz constants and the eigenvalues of Laplacian matrix. However, it is difficult to acquire the above prior information for most real-world engineering systems. To overcome the above difficulty, this paper develops the finite-time consensus criteria for a class of MASs with nonlinear dynamics via adaptive technique. In detail, we design the finite-time distributed node-based and edge-based adaptive consensus protocols for a class of MASs with fixed and switching topologies. | 2 | Gut microbiome profiling and colorectal cancer in African Americans and Caucasian Americans显示文摘AIM To determine whether and to what extent the gut microbiome is involved in regulating racial disparity in colorectal cancer(CRC). METHODS All patients were recruited and experiments were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations by the Institutional Review Boards (IRB), committees of the John D. Dingell VAMC and Wayne State University guidelines. African American (AA) and Caucasian American (CA) patients were scheduled for an outpatient screening for colonoscopy, and no active malignancy volunteer patients were doubly consented, initially by the gastroenterologist and later by the study coordinator, for participation in the study. The gut microbial communities in colonic effluents from AAs and CAs were examined using 16 sRNA profiling, and bacterial identifications were validated by performing SYBR-based Real Time PCR. For metagenomic analysis to characterize the microbial communities, multiple software/tools were used, including Metastats and R statistical software.RESULTS It is generally accepted that the incidence and mortality of CRC is higher in AAs than in CAs. However, the reason for this disparity is not well understood. We hypothesize that the gut microbiome plays a role in regulating this disparity. Indeed, we found significant differences in species richness and diversity between AAs and CAs. Bacteroidetes was more abundant in AAs than in CAs. In particular, the pro-inflammatory bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum and Enterobacter species were significantly higher in AAs, whereas probiotic Akkermansia muciniphila and Bifidobacterium were higher in CAs. The polyphyletic Clostridia class showed a divergent pattern, with Clostridium XI elevated in AAs, and Clostridium IV, known for its beneficial function, higher in CAs. Lastly, the AA group had decreased microbial diversity overall in comparison to the CA group. | 7 | Long-term outcomes of endothelial keratoplasty in Chinese eyes at a University Hospital显示文摘Background:Endothelial keratoplasty(EK)is used increasingly for the management of cases with endothelial dysfunction.Long-term outcomes of the surgery are not widely reported in the literature.We report our experience of EK in Chinese eyes at a University teaching hospital.Methods:Retrospective analysis was performed for all cases of EK performed between 2005 and 2009.Data analyzed included indication for surgery,associated surgical procedures,complications,best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and overall graft survival.Results:Overall,22 eyes of 21 patients underwent EK(13 males,8 females,mean age 71.8±11.3 years).Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy was the leading indication for surgery(n=12)followed by Fuchs’endothelial dystrophy(n=4),or both(n=3).Other indications for surgery included failed penetrating keratoplasty(n=2)and endothelial decompensation due to multiple surgeries(n=1).Triple procedure was performed in 5(22.7%)cases.Complications were noted in the form of postoperative interface hemorrhage(n=2,9%)and graft dislocation(n=1,4.5%).The mean postoperative endothelial cell density was 1069±585.8 cells/mm2.The mean postoperative pachymetry was 675.8±108.5μm.The mean preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure was 11.3±3.2 and 13.9±4.5 mmHg respectively.At the last follow-up(mean,47.4±13.7 months),BCVA was≥20/70 in 9(40.9%)cases.Causes of poor BCVA included primary graft failure(n=4),graft decompensation(n=4),advanced glaucoma(n=2)and irreversible graft rejection(n=2).Graft remained clear in 12(54.5%)cases at the last follow-up.Average graft survival was 19.7±17.7 months(median 17.5 months).Conclusions:Nearly half of the EK grafts in our study survived over a period of five years.Graft failure,glaucoma and graft rejection were the main causes of poor graft survival. | Alvin L Young Rachel PW Kwok Vishal Jhanji Lulu L Cheng Srinivas K Rao | 2014 | Eye and Vision2014,1,1: | 1 |

| 10 | Substrate concentration effect on gene expression in genetic circuits with additional positive feedback显示文摘In gene regulatory networks, gene regulation loops often occur with multiple positive feedback, multiple negative feedback and coupled positive and negative feedback forms. In above gene regulation loops, auto-activation loops are ubiquitous regulatory motifs. This paper aims to investigate a two-component dual-positive feedback genetic circuit, which consists of a double negative feedback circuit and an additional positive feedback loop(APFL). We study effect of substrate concentration on gene expression in the single and the networked systems with APFLs, respectively. We find that substrate concentration can tune stochastic switch behavior in the signal system and then we explore relationship of substrate concentration with positive feedback strength in aspect of stochastic switch behavior. Furthermore, we also discuss gene expression and stochastic switch behavior in the networked systems with APFLs. Based on analysis in the networked systems, we discover that genes express in some specific cells and do not express in the other cells when the expression achieves its steady state.
