| 3 | Carbon and nitrogen dynamics in a Pinus densiflora forest with low and high stand densities显示文摘Aims Understanding carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)dynamics and their dependence on the stand density of an even-aged,mature forest provides knowledge that is important for forest management.This study investigated the differences in ecosystem total C and N storage and flux between a low-density stand(LD)and a high-density stand(HD)and examined the effects of stand density on aboveground net primary productivity(ANPP),total belowground C allocation(TBCA)and net ecosystem production(NEP)in a naturally regenerated,65-to 75-year-old Pinus densiflora S.et Z.forest.Methods LD(450 trees ha^(−1))and HD(842 trees ha^(−1))were established in an even-aged,mature P.densiflora forest in September 2006.The forest had been naturally regenerated following harvesting,and the stand density was naturally maintained without any artificial management such as thinning.The diameter at breast height(DBH≥5.0cm)of all live stems within the stands was measured yearly from 2007 to 2011.To compare C and N storage and fluxes in LD and HD,C and N pools in aboveground and belowground biomass,the forest floor,coarse woody debris(CWD)and soil;soil CO_(2) efflux(R_(S));autotrophic respiration(R_(A));litter production;and soil N availability were measured.Further,ANPP,TBCA and NEP were estimated from plot-based measurement data.Important Findings Ecosystem C(Mg C ha^(−1))and N(Mg N ha^(−1))storage was,respectively,173.0±7.3(mean±SE)and 4.69±0.30 for LD and 162±11.8 and 4.08±0.18 for HD.There were no significant differences in C and N storage in the ecosystem components,except for soils,between the two stands.In contrast,there were significant differences in aboveground ANPP and TBCA between the two stands(P<0.05).Litterfall,biomass increment and R_(S) were major C flux components with values of,respectively,3.89,3.74 and 9.07 Mg C ha^(−1) year^(−1) in LD and 3.15,2.94 and 7.06 Mg C ha^(−1) year^(−1) in HD.Biometric-based NEP(Mg C ha^(−1) year^(−1))was 4.18 in LD and 5.50 in HD.Although the even-aged,mature P.densiflora forest had similar C and N allocation patterns,it showed different C and N dynamics depending on stand density.The results of the current study will be useful for elucidating the effects of stand density on C and N storage and fluxes,which are important issues in managing natural mature forest ecosystems. | Nam Jin Noh Choonsig Kim Sang Won Bae Woo Kyun Lee Tae Kyung Yoon Hiroyuki Muraoka Yowhan Son | 2013 | Journal of Plant Ecology2013,6,5: | 14 |
| 4 | Hyperglycemia is a significant prognostic factor of hepatocellular carcinoma after curative therapy显示文摘AIM:To evaluate whether metabolic factors are related to distant recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and survival after curative treatment.METHODS:This retrospective study included 344 patients whose HCC was treated curatively by radiofrequency ablation(RFA) therapy.The mean age was 67.6 years and the mean observation period was 4.04 years.The etiological background of liver disease was hepatitis B virus infection in 30,hepatitis C virus infection in 278,excessive alcohol drinking in 9,and other in 27 patients.The Child-Pugh classification grade was A(n = 307) or B(n = 37).The number of HCC nodules was one in 260,two in 61,and three in 23 patients.For surveillance of HCC recurrence after curative therapy with RFA,patients were radiologically evaluated every 3 mo.Factors associated with distant recurrence of HCC or survival were studied.RESULTS:Inadequate maintenance of blood glucose in diabetic patients was associated with higher incidence of distant recurrence.The 1-,2-,and 3-year recurrence rates were significantly higher in diabetic patients with inadequate maintenance of blood glucose compared with the others:50.6% vs 26.8%,83.5% vs 54.4%,and 93.8% vs 73.0%,respectively(P = 0.0001).Inadequate maintenance of blood glucose was an independent predictor of distant recurrence [adjusted relative risk 1.97(95%CI,1.33-2.91),(P = 0.0007)] after adjustment for other risk factors,such as number of HCC nodules [2.03(95%CI,1.51-2.73),P < 0.0001] and initial level of serum alpha fetoprotein(AFP) [1.43(95%CI,1.04-1.97),P = 0.028].Obesity was not an independent predictor of recurrence.The incidence of distant recurrence did not differ between diabetic patients with adequate maintenance of blood glucose and non-diabetic patients.Among 232 patients who had HCC recurrence,138 had a second recurrence.The 1-,2-,and 3-year rates of second recurrence were significantly higher in diabetic patients with inadequate maintenance of blood glucose than in the others:9.0% vs 5.9%,53.1% vs 24.3%,and 69.6% vs 42.3%,respectively(P = 0.0021).Inadequate maintenance of blood glucose in diabetic patients [1.99(95%CI,1.23-3.22),P = 0.0049] and presence of multiple HCC nodules [1.53(95%CI,1.06-2.22),P = 0.024] were again significantly associated with second HCC recurrence.Inadequate maintenance of blood glucose in diabetic patients was also a significant predictor of poor survival [2.77(95%CI,1.38-5.57),P = 0.0046] independent of excessive alcohol drinking [6.34(95%CI,1.35-29.7),P = 0.019],initial level of serum AFP [3.40(95%CI,1.88-6.18),P < 0.0001] and Child-Pugh classification grade B [2.24(95%CI,1.12-4.46),P = 0.022].Comparing diabetic patients with inadequate maintenance of blood glucose vs the others,the 1-,2-,and 3-year survival rates were significantly lower in diabetic patients with inadequate maintenance of blood glucose:92% vs 99%,85% vs 96%,and 70% vs 92%,respectively(P = 0.0003).CONCLUSION:Inadequate maintenance of blood glucose in diabetic patients is a significant risk factor for recurrence of HCC and for poor survival after curative RFA therapy. | Takanori Hosokawa Masayuki Kurosaki Kaoru Tsuchiya Shuya Matsuda Masaru Muraoka Yuichiro Suzuki Nobuharu Tamaki Yutaka Yasui Toru Nakata Takashi Nishimura Shoko Suzuki Ken Ueda Hiroyuki Nakanishi Jun Itakura Yuka Takahashi Namiki Izumi | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,2: | 12 |
| 5 | Spectral vegetation indices as the indicator of canopy photosynthetic productivity in a deciduous broadleaf forest显示文摘Aims Understanding of the ecophysiological dynamics of forest canopy photosynthesis and its spatial and temporal scaling is crucial for revealing ecological response to climate change.Combined observations and analyses of plant ecophysiology and optical remote sensing would enable us to achieve these studies.In order to examine the utility of spectral vegetation indices(VIs)for assessing ecosystem-level photosynthesis,we investigated the relationships between canopy-scale photosynthetic productivity and canopy spectral reflectance over seasons for 5 years in a cool,temperate deciduous broadleaf forest at‘Takayama’super site in central Japan.Methods Daily photosynthetic capacity was assessed by in situ canopy leaf area index(LAI),(LAI×Vcmax[single-leaf photosynthetic capacity]),and the daily maximum rate of gross primary production(GPPmax)was estimated by an ecosystem carbon cycle model.We examined five VIs:normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),enhanced vegetation index(EVI),green–red vegetation index(GRVI),chlorophyll index(CI)and canopy chlorophyll index(CCI),which were obtained by the in situ measurements of canopy spectral reflectance.Important Findings Our in situ observation of leaf and canopy characteristics,which were analyzed by an ecosystem carbon cycling model,revealed that their phenological changes are responsible for seasonal and interannual variations in canopy photosynthesis.Significant correlations were found between the five VIs and canopy photosynthetic capacity over the seasons and years;four of the VIs showed hysteresis-type relationships and only CCI showed rather linear relationship.Among the VIs examined,we applied EVI–GPPmax relationship to EVI data obtained by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer to estimate the temporal and spatial variation in GPPmax over central Japan.Our findings would improve the accuracy of satellite-based estimate of forest photosynthetic productivity in fine spatial and temporal resolutions,which are necessary for detecting any response of terrestrial ecosystem to meteorological fluctuations. | Hiroyuki Muraoka Hibiki M.Noda Shin Nagai Takeshi Motohka Taku M.Saitoh Kenlo N.Nasahara Nobuko Saigusa | 2013 | Journal of Plant Ecology2013,6,5: | 8 |
| 6 | Effect of atrial natriuretic peptide on ischemia-reperfusion injury in a porcine total hepatic vascular exclusion model显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the effect of ANP on warm I/R injury in a porcine THVE model. METHODS: Miniature pigs (mini-pigs) weighing 16-24 kg were observed for 120 min after reperfusion following 120 min of THVE. The animals were divided into two groups. ANP (0.1 μg/kg per min) was administered to the ANP group (n = 7), and vehicle was administered to the control group (n = 7). Either vehicle or ANP was intravenously administered from 30 min before the THVE to the end of the experiment. Arterial blood was collected to measure AST, LDH, and TNF-α. Hepatic tissue blood ? ow (HTBF) was also measured. Liver specimens were harvested for p38 MAPK analysis and histological study. Those results were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The AST and LDH levels were lower in the ANP group than in the control group; the AST levels were signifi cantly different between the two groups (60 min: 568.7 ± 113.3 vs 321.6 ± 60.1, P = 0.038 < 0.05, 120 min: 673.6 ± 148.2 vs 281.1 ± 44.8, P = 0.004 < 0.01). No signifi cant difference was observed in the TNF-α levels between the two groups. HTBF was higher in the ANP group, but the difference was not signif icant. A signifi cantly higher level of phosphorylated p38 MAPK was observed in the ANP group compared to the controlgroup (0 min: 2.92 ± 1.1 vs 6.38 ± 1.1, P = 0.011 < 0.05).Histological tissue damage was milder in the ANP group than in the control group.
