2Effect of a bacterial inoculum and additive on dry matter in situ degradability of sugarcane silage显示文摘The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding a bacterial inoculum and a handmade additive to sugarcane silage(SCS) on the in situ digestibility of dry matter(DM). The treatments were: T1) sugarcane silage(SCS) and T2) sugarcane silage with 1% inoculum and 1% additive(SCS+). The bacterial inoculum consisted of 10.0% molasses, 1.0% yogurt, 5.0% chicken manure, 0.5% urea, and 83.0% water, and the additive was formulated with 1.0% urea, 0.1% ammonium sulfate, and 0.25% phosphorus. In situ dry matter digestibility(DMD) was determined using the nylon bag technique with four cows equipped with ruminal fistulas. Cows were fed with ensiled sugarcane supplemented with 1 kg of commercial concentrate. 5 g of ground sample for each sugarcane treatment were weighted in nylon bags and incubated for 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h in a completely randomized design with six replicates. The DMD(%) was higher(P<0.05) for SCS+ for all incubation times when compared with SCS. There were no differences in ruminal p H between the treatments for all the incubation times. 3Cognitive disorder and dementia in type 2 diabetes mellitus显示文摘Insulin,a key pleiotropic hormone,regulates metabolism through several signaling pathways in target tissues including skeletal muscle,liver,and brain.In the brain,insulin modulates learning and memory,and impaired insulin signaling is associated with metabolic dysregulation and neurodegenerative diseases.At the receptor level,in aging and Alzheimer’s disease(AD)models,the amount of insulin receptors and their functions are decreased.Clinical and animal model studies suggest that memory improvements are due to changes in insulin levels.Furthermore,diabetes mellitus(DM)and insulin resistance are associated with age-related cognitive decline,increased levels ofβ-amyloid peptide,phosphorylation of tau protein;oxidative stress,pro-inflammatory cytokine production and dyslipidemia. Recent evidence shows that deleting brain insulin receptors leads to mildobesity and insulin resistance without influencing brain size and apoptosis development.Conversely, deleting insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) affects brain size anddevelopment, and contributes to behavior changes. Insulin is synthesized locally in the brain andis released from the neurons. Here, we reviewed proposed pathophysiological hypotheses toexplain increased risk of dementia in the presence of DM. Regardless of the exact sequence ofevents leading to neurodegeneration, there is strong evidence that mitochondrial dysfunctionplays a key role in AD and DM. A triple transgenic mouse model of AD showed mitochondrialdysfunction, oxidative stress, and loss of synaptic integrity. These alterations are comparable tothose induced in wild-type mice treated with sucrose, which is consistent with the proposal thatmitochondrial alterations are associated with DM and contribute to AD development. Alterationsin insulin/IGF-1 signaling in DM could lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and low antioxidantcapacity of the cell. 4Prospective evaluation of the short access cholangioscopy for stone clearance and evaluation of indeterminate strictures显示文摘BACKGROUND: Peroral cholangioscopy facilitates diagnosis and therapy of biliary disorders. This study prospectively evaluated a new short access cholangioscopy. METHODS: Consecutive patients were included as follows: difficult stones(group 1) underwent cholangioscopy with electrohydraulic lithotripsy and indeterminate biliary strictures(group 2) were evaluated with macroscopic assessment and cholangioscopy guided biopsy sampling. We evaluated the complete stone clearance rate(group 1) and diagnostic accuracy(group 2). Follow-up was performed over a median of 13 and 16 months, respectively.RESULTS: Group 1(n=21): complete stone clearance defined as lack of stones in cholangiography and stone removal during cholangioscopy was achieved in 15(71.4%) patients. Clinical stone clearance defined as lack of symptoms, laboratory abnormalities and hospital visits during follow-up, irrespective of stone clearance was evident in 17(81.0%) patients. One serious adverse event occurred(bile duct perforation). Group 2(n=28): malignancy was confirmed in 15 patients. Sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of cholangioscopy were 85.7%, 75.0% and 80.7%, respectively. Sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of biopsies were 54.5%, 100.0% and 72.2%, respectively. No serious adverse events occurred, and one patient was lost to follow-up.CONCLUSIONS: The novel system enabled complex stone treatment and biliary stricture diagnosis. 13Resource manipulation reveals flexible allocation rules to growth and reproduction in a Mediterranean evergreen oak显示文摘Aims In plants,resource allocation to growth and reproduction may depart from trade-off expectations if(i)investment in growth and reproduction relies on different resource pools,(ii)allocation to reproduction is dependent upon reaching some growth threshold or(iii)reproduction is developmentally linked to growth,both functions relying on the same resource pool.We examined the effects of enhanced resource level on patterns of resource allocation to growth and reproduction in holm oak(Quercus ilex sbsp.ballota),a Mediterranean evergreen tree.Methods In the experimental year(2003),we manipulated the amount of soil nutrients in autumn(to increase nutrient uptake during shoot elongation in the following spring)and soil water in summer(to increase water uptake during acorn growth).Indicators of growth and male and female reproduction were estimated in the preexperimental(2002),experimental(2003)and post-experimental(2004)years.Important Findings Fertilized trees produced significantly longer shoots,but the number of female flowers per shoot was not affected by treatments.The production of male catkins was also enhanced by fertilization.Irrigation did not affect the production of female flowers or abortion rates.Growth and female reproduction showed no consistent relationship in untreated trees,but resource addition elicited a growth-female reproduction trade-off in the experimental year.The sign of this significant relationship changed in the post-experimental year,indicating the existence of lagged effects of resource manipulation on acorn production.Overall,patterns of allocation to growth and reproduction varied as a function of sex,resource availability and year,a result consistent with extreme allocational plasticity in holm oak.Fernando Pulido Gerardo Moreno Eustolia García José J.Obrador Raúl Bonal Mario Díaz 2014Journal of Plant Ecology2014,7,1:1
