Prediction and prevention of rockburst in metal mines--A case study of Sanshandao gold mine显示文摘Rockburst is a kind of artificial earthquake induced by human activities, such as mining excavations. The mechanism of rockburst induced by mining disturbance is revealed in terms of energy in this context. For understanding the rockburst mechanism, two necessary conditions for the occurrence of rockburst are presented:(1)the rock mass has the capability to store huge amount of energy and possesses a strong bumping-prone characteristic when damaged;and(2)the geological conditions in the mining area have favorable geo-stress environments that can form high-stress concentration area and accumulate huge energy. These two conditions are also the basic criteria for prediction of rockburst. In view of energy analysis,it is observed that artificial and natural earthquakes have similar regularities in many aspects, such as the relationship between the energy value and burst magnitude.By using the relationship between energy and magnitude of natural earthquake, rockburst is predicted by disturbance energy analysis.A practical example is illustrated using the above-mentioned theorem and technique to predict rockburst in a gold mine in China. Finally, the prevention and control techniques of rockburst are also provided based on the knowledge of the rockburst mechanism. | meifeng cai | 2016 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2016,8,2: | 18
Application and reliability analysis of DPM system in site investigation of HK weathered granite显示文摘A drilling process monitor (DPM) for ground characterization of weathered granite is presented. The monitor is portable and can be mounted on a hydraulic rotary drilling rig to record various drilling parameters in real time during normal subsurface in- vestigation. The identification method for dominative and subsidiary interfaces has been established. The study reveals that the monitored drilling parameters are dependent on geotechnical materials and can be further applied to characterize ground interfaces. The t-test between manual logging and DPM logging has been carried out. The results show that the DPM has high accuracy in inter- faces detection and well agreement with the manual logging. The findings show that the device and data analysis method are of po- tential application in subsurface drilling exploration in weathered granites. It also seems to have prospective uses in the determination of orebody boundary as well as in the detection of geohazards. | Zhuoying Tan Meifeng Cai Zhongqi Yue L.G. Tham C.F. | 4 | Advance of in-situ stress measurement in China显示文摘In-situ stress is an essential parameter for design and construction of most engineering projects that involve excavation in rocks.Progress in in-situ stress measurement from the 1950s in China is briefly introduced.Stress relief by overcoring technique and hydraulic fracturing technique are the two main techniques for in-situ stress measurement in China at present. To make them suitable for application at great depth and to increase their measuring reliability and accuracy,a series of techniques have been developed.Applications and achievements of in-situ stress measurement in Chinese rock engineering, including mining, geotechnical and hydropower engineering, and earthquake prediction, are introduced.Suggestions for further development of in-situ stress measurement are also proposed. | Meifeng Cai Hua Peng | 2011 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2011,3,4: | 8
Evaluation on Stability of Stope Structure Based on Nonlinear Dynamics of Coupling Artificial Neural Network显示文摘The nonlinear dynamical behaviors of artificial neural network (ANN) and their application to science and engineering were summarized. The mechanism of two kinds of dynamical processes, i.e. weight dynamics and activation dynamics in neural networks, and the stability of computing in structural analysis and design were stated briefly. It was successfully applied to nonlinear neural network to evaluate the stability of underground stope structure in a gold mine. With the application of BP network, it is proven that the neuro-com- puting is a practical and advanced tool for solving large-scale underground rock engineering problems. | Meifeng Cai Xingping Lai | 2002 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2002,9,1: | 7
Considerations of rock dilation on modeling failure and deformation of hard rocks-a case study of the mine-by test tunnel in Canada显示文摘For the compressive stress-induced failure of tunnels at depth, rock fracturing process is often closely associated with the generation of surface parallel fractures in the initial stage, and shear failure is likely to occur in the final process during the formation of shear bands, breakouts or V-shaped notches close to the excavation boundaries. However, the perfectly elastoplastic, strain-softening and elasto-brittle-plastic models cannot reasonably describe the brittle failure of hard rock tunnels under high in-situ stress conditions. These approaches often underestimate the depth of failure and overestimate the lateral extent of failure near the excavation. Based on a practical case of the mine-by test tunnel at an underground research laboratory (URL) in Canada, the influence of rock mass dilation on the depth and extent of failure and deformation is investigated using a calibrated cohesion weakening and frictional strengthening (CWFS) model. It can be found that, when modeling brittle failure of rock masses, the calibrated CWFS model with a constant dilation angle can capture the depth and extent of stress-induced brittle failure in hard rocks at a low confinement if the stress path is correctly represented, as demonstrated by the failure shape observed in the tunnel. However, using a constant dilation angle cannot simulate the nonlinear deformation behavior near the excavation boundary accurately because the dependence of rock mass dilation on confinement and plastic shear strain is not considered. It is illustrated from the numerical simulations that the proposed plastic shear strain and confinement-dependent dilation angle model in combination with the calibrated CWFS model implemented in FLAC can reasonably reveal both rock mass failure and displacement distribution in vicinity of the excavation simultaneously. The simulation results are in good agreement with the field observations and displacement measurement data. | Xingguang Zhao Meifeng Cai MCai | 2010 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2010,2,4: | 7
Key Engineering Technologies to Achieve Green, Intelligent, and Sustainable Development of Deep Metal Mines in China显示文摘1.Introduction Metal mineral resources are the most important industrial raw materials in the world and play an indispensable role in the development of the national economy, social and material civilization, and scientific and technological progress. After decades of sustained and high-intensity development, shallow metal mineral resources in China have gradually decreased and are nearly exhausted[1];thus,the exploitation of metal mineral resources is comprehensively advancing toward greater depths. At present, more than 20 underground metal mines have reached or exceeded a mining depth of 1000 m[2].According to statistics, the mining depth of more than one-third of China’s underground metal mines will exceed 1000 m over the next decade, and the maximum mining depth will range from 2000 to 3000 m.It has been predicted that, with the advancement of exploration technology and the increase in exploration depth,it is entirely possible to encounter several large metal deposits at depths ranging from 3000 to 5000 m in China.Consequently, deep mining is the most urgent problem facing the development of metal mines in China, while remaining the most important way to ensure the sustainable development and supply of metal mineral resources in the future.Against this background,we propose key engineering technologies to address the problems presented by deep mining from a strategic perspective. | Meifeng Cai Peng Li Wenhui Tan Fenhua Ren | 2021 | Engineering2021,7,11: | 6
Dynamic destabilization analysis based on AE experiment of deep-seated,steep-inclined and extra-thick coal seam显示文摘No.5 coal seam in Huating Coal Mine is a deep-seated,steep-inclined extra-thick coal seam where excavation disturbance is quite frequent. The maximum and minimum principal stresses differ widely.During mining, dynamical destabilization happens frequently and induce tragedies.Based on the comparison between the acoustic emission(AE)experiment on dynamical destabiliza- tion of coal rock and the related in situ testing results, this article provides comprehensive analysis on the regular quantificational AE patterns(energy rate, total events)of coal rock destabilization in complex-variable environment. The comparison parameters include dynamic tension energy rate, deformation resistance to compression, and shear stress. | Fenhua Ren Xmgpmg Lai Meifeng Cai | 2008 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2008,15,3: | 5
Stress Measurement with an Improved Hollow Inclusion Technique In Jinchuan Nickel Mine显示文摘Borehole overcoring stress measurement with an improved hollow inclusion technique was carried out at 10 points on 3 levels in Jinchuan nickel mine which is situated in north-west of China. Through the measurement, 3-D in situ stress state at the measuring points and distribution characteristics of the stress field in the mine were obtained. The stress state in Jinchuan mine is dominated by the horizontal tectonic stress field. The maximum principal stress is horizontal which is about twice the weight of the overburden and its orientation is approximately vertical to the regional tectonic line. The difference between two horizontal principal stresses is quite large which is an important reason to cause failure of underground excavations. | Meifeng Cai, Lan Qiao, Bo Yu, Shuanghong Wang (Resources Engineering School, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing 100083) | 2000 | International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2000,14,3: | 5
GIS-based 3D limit equilibrium analysis for design optimization of a 600 m high slope in an open pit mine显示文摘Combining the GIS (geographic information systems) grid-based data with four proposed column-based 3D slope stability analysis models, a comprehensive solution of a high-steep open-pit slope has been obtained. For six searching ranges, 19 critical slip surfaces of different sizes have been studied, in which the minimum 3D safety factor is 1.33. Comparison of 3D safety factors of des- igned and proposed slope plans shows for all the critical slip surfaces for the proposed plan, the smallest 3D safety factor is 1.33 under the most unfavorable condition. This means that the proposed plan of the high slopes, about 600 m, of an open pit (2-5o steeper than designed plan) is feasible. | Meifeng Cai Mowen Xie Chunlei Li | 2007 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2007,14,1: | 4
Measurement and study of the distributing law of in-situ stresses in rock mass at great depth显示文摘To solve the technical cruxes of the conventional system in deep rock mass, an automatic testing system for hydraulic frac- turing that includes a single tube for hydraulic loop, a pressure-relief valve, central-tubeless packers, and a multichannel real-time data acquisition system was used for in-situ stresses measurement at great depths (over 1000 m) in a coalfield in Juye of Northern China. The values and orientations of horizontal principal stresses were determined by the new system. The virgin stress field and its dis- tributing law were decided by the linear regression from the logged 37 points in seven boreholes. Besides, the typical boreholes ar- ranged in both the adjacent zone and far away zone of the faults were analyzed, respectively. The results show that a stress concentra- tion phenomenon and a deflection in the orientation of the maximal horizontal stress exist in the adjacent zone of the faults, which further provides theoretical basis for design and optimization of mining. | Zhuoying Tan Meifeng Cai | 2006 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2006,13,3: | 4
Quantitative analysis of biotechnical reinforcement for a steep slope consisting of composite coal-gangue-soil medium adjacent to a mined-out area显示文摘The engineering and geological characteristics of a steep slope consisting of coal gangue, rock and soil medium in Hua- ting coal mine have been comprehensively investigated. Owing to humid weather, heavy rainfall, vegetation and porous characteris- tics of the soil and rock mass, the steep slope will be destabilized and induce mud-rock flow or derive hazard easily. Firstly, based on the classical slope reinforcement theory, some regularity between the shear and displacement in the destabilized zone of the slope with or without root strength contribution is presented. Then, based on the experimental and statistical analysis of root strength, hy- drological characteristics and stability status, etc., some possible biotechnical techniques for reinforcement of the steep slope have been suggested. These methods are important for quantitative analysis of destabilization of the slope and design of the biotechnical reinforcement. | Xingping Lai Mowen Xie Fenhua Ren Meifeng Cai | 2005 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2005,12,6: | 3
Seepage effects of groundwater and its make-up water on triggering ground subsidence显示文摘The functioning mechanism of groundwater and its make-up water in the process of ground subsidence was studied from such three aspects as osmotic corrasion, osmotic pressure effect and concretion effect. As to osmotic corrasion, its forming conditions, mechanical mechanism and process were analyzed. As to osmotic pressure effect, it was mainly studied from hydrostatic pressurizing effect, sop softening effect and negative pressure sealing effect. Through concretion and saturation of soil, the factors of concretion settlement were analyzed. The results showed that both groundwater and its make-up water are important triggering factors to ground subsidence. | Zhenhua Ouyang Meifeng Cai Changhong Li Mowen Xie | 2006 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2006,13,1: | 3

New development of hydraulic fracturing technique for in-situ stress measurement at great depth of mines显示文摘In-situ stress measurement using the hydraulic fracturing technique was made at Wanfu Coal Mine in Shandong Province, China. To solve problems caused by great measuring depth and extra thick overburden soil layers in the mine, a series of improved techniques were developed for the traditional hydraulic fracturing technique and equipment to increase their pressure-enduring ability and to ensure safe and flexible removal of the sealing packers with other experimental apparatus. Successful in-situ stress measure-ment at 37 points within 7 boreholes, which were mostly over 1000 m deep, was completed. Through the measurement, detailed in-formation of in-situ stress state has been provided for mining design of the mine. The improved hydraulic fracturing technique and equipment also provide reliable tools for in-situ stress measurement at great depth of other mines. | Meifeng Cai Hua Peng Hongguang Ji | 2008 | Journal of University of Science and Technology Beijing2008,15,6: | 3
Technology strategies to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality for China's metal mines显示文摘Greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions related to human activities have significantly caused climate change since the Industrial Revolution.China aims to achieve its carbon emission peak before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060.Accordingly,this paper reviews and discusses technical strategies to achieve the“dual carbon”targets in China’s metal mines.First, global carbon emissions and emission intensities from metal mining industries are analyzed. The metal mining status and carbon emissions in China are then examined.Furthermore, advanced technologies for carbon mitigation and carbon sequestration in metal mines are reviewed. Finally,a technical roadmap for achieving carbon neutrality in China’s metal mines is proposed.Findings show that some international mining giants have already achieved their carbon reduction targets and planned to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.Moreover,improving mining efficiency by developing advanced technologies and replacing fossil fuel with renewable energy are two key approaches in reducing GHG emissions.Green mines can significantly benefit from the carbon neutrality process for metal mines through the carbon absorption of reclamation vegetations.Geothermal energy extraction from operating and abandoned metal mines is a promising technology for providing clean energy and contributing to the carbon neutrality target of China’s metal mines.Carbon sequestration in mine backfills and tailings through mineral carbonation has the potential to permanently and safely store carbon dioxide, which can eventually make the metal mining industry carbon neutral or even carbon negative. | Qifeng Guo Xun Xi Shangtong Yang Meifeng Cai | 2022 | International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2022,29,4: | 2

| 19 | Instrumented borehole drilling for interface identification in intricate weathered granite ground engineering显示文摘The successful application in drilling for HK simple weathered granite foundation has revealed its further use in instru- mented drilling system as a ground investigation tool in the detection of other lithology formations, geohazards, underground water, and boundary of orebody. To expand the further use and test the accuracy in identification of formation, an R-20 rotary-hydraulic drill rig was instrumented with a digital drilling process monitoring system (DPM) for drilling in an intricate decomposed granite site. In this test ground, the boreholes revealed that the weathered granite alternately changes between moderate and strong. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the penetrating parameters, indicates the effective thrust force, rotary speed, flushing pressure, penetrating rate, and displacement of the bit fluctuate at ground interfaces. It shows that the parameters get a good response with the change of rock strength at the interfaces, which can reveal the change of the intricate granite formation. Besides, a variable-slope method has been established, for identification of dominative and subsidiary interfaces in the granite site. The result from a t-test shows that the confi- dence of the instrumented drilling system in identification of the geotechnical interfaces is up to 99%. | Zhuoying Tan Meifeng Cai Z.Q.
