1Isolation and identification of fungi found in contaminated fermented milk and antifungal activity of vanillin显示文摘Fungi contamination is an important factor affecting the quality and commercial value of fermented milk.Vanillin is known as a safe and efficient natural antimicrobial additive with great potential value as a food bio-preservative.In this study,the microbiological quality of fermented milk of different brands retailed in China and the antimicrobial activity of vanillin were investigated.A total of 27 fermented milk samples were purchased and evaluated.Fungal isolates obtained were characterized by DNA sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer(ITS)region.The effects of vanillin on the growth of fungi were studied by plate dilution method,radical colony diameter,and mycelium biomass.The result showed that 14.8%of the samples were contaminated with three different species of fungi with Cladosporium spp.being the most predominant fungal contaminant.The study further showed that vanillin had significant inhibitory activity against the growth of the fungi species.The cell number,radical colony diameter,and the mycelium biomass of the fungal contaminant were significantly reduced by the inhibitory action of the vanillin.The study thus provides reliable data evidence that will help relevant stakeholders in the fermented milk industries to improve their quality control strategies and consider vanillin as a bio-preservative with the potential to increase the shelf-life and safety of fermented milk.Xu Pei Mekonen Tekliye Mingsheng Dong 2021Food Science and Human Wellness2021,10,2:3

9Rural households’ livelihood vulnerability to climate variability and extremes: a livelihood zone-based approach in the Northeastern Highlands of Ethiopia显示文摘Background:The adverse effects of climate variability and extremes exert increasing pressure on rural farm households whose livelihoods are dependent on nature.However,integrated and area-specific vulnerability assessments in Ethiopia in general and the study area,in particular,are scarce and insufficient for policy implications.Therefore,this study aims to quantify,map,classify,and prioritize the level of vulnerability in terms of the components of exposure,sensitivity,and adaptive capacity in the Northeastern Highlands of Ethiopia.The study area is divided into six livelihood zones,namely,Abay-Beshilo Basin(ABB),South Wollo and Oromia eastern lowland sorghum and cattle(SWS),Chefa Valley(CHV),Meher-Belg,Belg,and Meher.A total of 361 sample households were selected using proportional probability sampling techniques.Survey questionnaire,key informant interview,and focus group discussions were used to collect the necessary data.Rainfall and temperature data were also used.Following the IPCC’s climate change vulnerability assessment approach,the climate vulnerability index(CVI)framework of Sullivan and Meigh’s model was used to assess the relative vulnerability of livelihoods of rural households.Twenty-four vulnerability indicators were identified for exposure,sensitivity,and adaptive capacity components.In this regard,Iyengar and Sudarshan’s unequal weighting system was applied to assign a weight to indicators.Results:The results revealed that Belg and Meher were found to be the highest exposure livelihood zones to vulnerability with an aggregated value of 0.71.Equally,SWS,ABB,Belg,and CHV livelihood zones showed moderate level of sensitivity to vulnerability with an aggregated value between 0.45 and 0.60.The study noted that livelihood zone of Belg(0.75)was found to be at high level of livelihood vulnerability.ABB(0.57)and CHV(0.45)were at a moderate level of livelihood vulnerability while Meher-Belg(0.22)was the least vulnerable livelihood zone due to a high level of adaptive capacity such as infrastructure,asset accumulation,and social networks Conclusion:It was identified that disparities of livelihood vulnerability levels of rural households were detected across the study livelihood zones due to differences in the interaction of exposure,sensitivity,and adaptive capacity components.The highest levels of exposure and sensitivity combined with low level of adaptive capacity have increased households’livelihood vulnerability.More importantly,the biophysical and socioeconomic sensitivity to livelihood vulnerability were exacerbated by slope/topography,soil erodibility,and population pressure.Therefore,designing livelihood zone-based identifiable adaptation strategies are essential to reduce the exposure and sensitivity of crop-livestock mixed agricultural systems to climate calamity.Abebe Arega Mekonen Arega Bazezew Berlie 2021Ecological Processes2021,10,1:1

11Sedimentation in small-scale irrigation schemes in Ethiopia:Its sources and management显示文摘Numerous irrigation schemes in sub-Saharan Africa(SSA)exhibit excessive sedimentation,resulting in underperformance and high maintenance costs.In the current study,a participatory monitoring program was used to investigate sediment causes and sources,measure the annual sediment load,and monitor desilting campaigns in two small scale irrigation schemes in Ethiopia,Arata-Chufa(100 ha)and Ketar(430 ha),for three years(2016-2018).Sedimentation quantities were huge,where the annual river sediment influx ranged from 220 m^(3)for the Arata-Chufa scheme to 1,741 m^(3)for the Ketar scheme.On average 0.3 m^(3)/m of sediment were removed from the main canal for Arata-Chufa costing 794 days of labor per year.In Ketar,sediment quantities were even greater:1.1 m^(3)/m was removed requiring 3,118days of labor per year.The sediment influx from the river source amounts to up to 95%for Arata-Chufa and moderately reaches 46%for Ketar,with the remainder of the sediment entering with overland erosion flows.Farmers reported increased sedimentation over time and difficulty paying operation and maintenance fees instead preferring to contribute labor for the desilting campaigns.Sedimentation management is fragile and mainly involves frequent desilting campaigns and unharmonized efforts to reduce overland sediment inflows.Factors contributing to sediment deposition include mild longitudinal bed slopes,the location of the intake,canal layout,and lack of canal banks for protection against surface water inflow in addition to sub-optimal canal operations.Excessive sedimentation is a major challenge resulting in underperformance of numerous irrigation schemes in SSA,and the stakeholders’lack of awareness of the sources of sedimentation is an underlying factor aggravating sedimentation problems.It is concluded that investigating the sources,extent,and types of sedimentation entering a small-scale irrigation scheme is the basis for reducing maintenance costs and for effective management of sedimentation problems.Zerihun Anbesa Gurmu Henk Ritzema Charlotte de Fraiture Mekonen Ayana 2022International Journal of Sediment Research2022,37,5:0
12Pericarditis following COVID-19 vaccination:Two case reports显示文摘BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a highly contagious viral illness which conventionally manifests with primarily respiratory symptoms and less commonly with cardiac involvement in various forms,such as pericarditis.Myocarditis and pericarditis have been reported in a variety of live and attenuated vaccines,such as smallpox and influenza.As of October 2021,no cases of pericarditis associated with COVID-19 vaccination have been published.We present two healthy male patients who present post COVID-19 vaccination with pericarditis diagnoses.CASE SUMMARY A 21-year-old male with no significant past medical history presented with myalgia,chills,mild headache,and chest pain for two days.Patient received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine the day prior to symptom onset.On presentation,electrocardiogram(ECG)revealed sinus rhythm with ST elevation,and troponin was elevated.Emergent cardiac catheterization was not significant for abnormalities.The primary diagnosis was acute pericarditis,and the patient was discharged on colchicine and indomethacin.Additionally,a 35-year-old male with no pertinent past medical history presented with fever,chills,weakness,nausea,vomiting,diarrhea,and retrosternal chest pain for three days.He received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine four days prior to symptom onset.On presentation,troponin was elevated,and ECG revealed mild ST elevation.Left ventricular dysfunction with ejection fraction of 41%was reported on transthoracic echocardiogram.Patient was started on ibuprofen and colchicine for diagnosis of myopericarditis.CONCLUSION These case reports highlight a potential unintended consequence,pericarditis,associated with COVID-19 vaccination that may not warrant invasive cardiac intervention.Justyna Fydrych Amanda Paige Hughes Said Abuhasna Endale Mekonen 2022World Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases2022,12,1:0
