| 1 | Conversion of Malaysian low-rank coal to mesoporous activated carbon:Structure characterization and adsorption properties显示文摘Malaysian Selantik low-rank coal(SC)was used as a precursor to prepare a form of mesoporous activated carbon(SC-AC)with greater surface area(SA)via a microwave induced KOH-activation method.The characteristics of the SC and SC-AC were evaluated by the iodine number,ash content,bulk density,and moisture content The structure and surface characterization was carried out using pore structure analysis(BET),scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM-EDX),X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR),elemental analysis(CHNS),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),and determination of the point of zero charge(pH(PZC)).These results signify a mesoporous structure of SC-AC with an increase of ca.1160 times(BET SA=1094.3 m^2·g^-1)as compared with raw SC without activation(BET SA=1.23 m^2·g^-1).The adsorptive properties of the SC-AC with methylene blue(MB)was carried out at variable adsorbent dose(0.2-1.6 g·L^-1),solution pH(2-12),initial MB concentrations(25-400 mg·L^-1),and contact time(0-290 min)using batch mode operation.The kinetic profiles follow pseudo-second order kinetics and the equilibrium uptake of MB conforms to the Langmuir model with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 491.7 mg g^-1 at 303 K.Thermodynamic functions revealed a spontaneous endothermic adsorption process.The mechanism of adsorption included mainly electrostatic attractions,hydrogen bonding interaction,andπ-πstacking interaction.This work shows that Malaysian Selantik low-rank coal is a promising precursor for the production of low-cost and efficient mesoporous activated carbon with substantive surface area. | Ali H.Jawad Khudzir Ismail Mohd Azlan Mohd Ishak Lee D. | 3 | Magnesium acetyltaurate prevents retinal damage and visual impairment in rats through suppression of NMDA-induced upregulation of NF-κB,p53 and AP-1(c-Jun/c-Fos)显示文摘Magnesium acetyltaurate(MgAT)has been shown to have a protective effect against N-methyl-D-aspartate(NMDA)-induced retinal cell apoptosis.The current study investigated the involvement of nuclear factor kappa-B(NF-κB),p53 and AP-1 family members(c-Jun/c-Fos)in neuroprotection by MgAT against NMDA-induced retinal damage.In this study,Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to undergo intravitreal injection of vehicle,NMDA or MgAT as pre-treatment to NMDA.Seven days after injections,retinal ganglion cells survival was detected using retrograde labelling with fluorogold and BRN3A immunostaining.Functional outcome of retinal damage was assessed using electroretinography,and the mechanisms underlying antiapoptotic effect of MgAT were investigated through assessment of retinal gene expression of NF-κB,p53 and AP-1 family members(c-Jun/c-Fos)using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.Retinal phospho-NF-κB,phospho-p53 and AP-1 levels were evaluated using western blot assay.Rat visual functions were evaluated using visual object recognition tests.Both retrograde labelling and BRN3A immunostaining revealed a significant increase in the number of retinal ganglion cells in rats receiving intravitreal injection of MgAT compared with the rats receiving intravitreal injection of NMDA.Electroretinography indicated that pre-treatment with MgAT partially preserved the functional activity of NMDA-exposed retinas.MgAT abolished NMDA-induced increase of retinal phospho-NF-κB,phospho-p53 and AP-1 expression and suppressed NMDA-induced transcriptional activity of NF-κB,p53 and AP-1 family members(c-Jun/c-Fos).Visual object recognition tests showed that MgAT reduced difficulties in recognizing the visual cues(i.e.objects with different shapes)after NMDA exposure,suggesting that visual functions of rats were relatively preserved by pre-treatment with MgAT.In conclusion,pre-treatment with MgAT prevents NMDA induced retinal injury by inhibiting NMDA-induced neuronal apoptosis via downregulation of transcriptional activity of NF-κB,p53 and AP-1-mediated c-Jun/c-Fos.The experiments were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Universiti Teknologi MARA(UiTM),Malaysia,UiTM CARE No 118/2015 on December 4,2015 and UiTM CARE No 220/7/2017 on December 8,2017 and Ethics Committee of Belgorod State National Research University,Russia,No 02/20 on January 10,2020. | Lidawani Lambuk Igor Iezhitsa Renu Agarwal Puneet Agarwal Anna Peresypkina Anna Pobeda Nafeeza Mohd Ismail | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,11: | 5 |

| 5 | Hypoglycemic and anti-hyperglycemic study of Gynura procumbens leaf extracts显示文摘Objective:To study the antidiabetic activity of Gynura procumbens(G.procumbens)used in the traditional management of diabetes in Southern Asia.Methods:G.procumbens leaves were extracted sequentially with graded percentage of ethanol in water(95%,75%,50%,25%and 0%),and the extracts were tested for antidiabetic activity using acute(7 h),subcutaneous glucose tolerance test and sub-chronic(14 d)test in non-diabetic and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.The extracts were further subjected to phytochemical studies.Results:In acute dose(1 g/kg),the extracts significantly lowered fasting blood glucose(FBG)in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats(P<0.05).However,the FBG-lowering effect of the 25%extract compared to the other extracts,was rapid(47%after 2 h)and the highest:53%,53%and 60%in the 3rd,5th,and 7th h,respectively(P<0.05),comparable only to the effect of metformin.Furthermore,the extracts suppressed peak FBG in subcutaneous glucose tolerance test,but only the 0%and 25%extracts,and metformin sustained the decrease until the 90th min(P<0.05).Moreover,in the 14 days study,the 25%extract exerted the highest FBG-lowering effect,namely 49.38%and 65.43%on days 7 and 14,respectively(P<0.05),similar to the effect of metformin(46.26%and 65.42%).Total flavanoid and phenolic contents in the extracts were found to decrease with increase in polarity of extraction solvents.The composition of reference compounds(chlorogenic acid,rutin,astragalin and kaempferol-3-O-nrtinoside)followed a similar trend.Conclusions:G.procumbens contains antidiabetic principles,most extracted in 25%ethanol.Interaction among active components appears to determine the antidiabetic efficacy,achieved likely by a metformin-like mechanism. | Khalid Algariri Kuong Y Meng Item J Atangwho Mohd Z Asmawi Amirin Sadikun Vikneswaran Murugaiyah Norhyati Ismail | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,5: | 4 |

| 7 | Taurine protects against retinal and optic nerve damage induced by endothelin-1 in rats via antioxidant effects显示文摘Endothelin-1(ET-1), a potent vasoconstrictor, is involved in retinal vascular dysregulation and oxidative stress in glaucomatous eyes. Taurine(TAU), a naturally occurring free amino acid, is known for its neuroprotective and antioxidant properties. Hence, we evaluated its neuroprotective properties against ET-1 induced retinal and optic nerve damage. ET-1 was administered intravitreally to Sprague-Dawley rats and TAU was injected as pre-, co-or post-treatment. Animals were euthanized seven days post TAU injection. Retinae and optic nerve were examined for morphology, and were also processed for caspase-3 immunostaining. Retinal redox status was estimated by measuring retinal superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, and malondialdehyde levels using enzyme-linked immuosorbent assay. Histopathological examination showed significantly improved retinal and optic nerve morphology in TAU-treated groups. Morphometric examination showed that TAU pre-treatment provided marked protection against ET-1 induced damage to retina and optic nerve. In accordance with the morphological observations, immunostaining for caspase showed a significantly lesser number of apoptotic retinal cells in the TAU pre-treatment group. The retinal oxidative stress was reduced in all TAU-treated groups, and particularly in the pre-treatment group. The findings suggest that treatment with TAU, particularly pre-treatment, prevents apoptosis of retinal cells induced by ET-1 and hence prevents the changes in the morphology of retina and optic nerve. | 19 | Antioxidant compounds and capacities of Gac (Momordica cochinchinensis Spreng) fruits显示文摘Objective: To identify and determine the composition of antioxidant compounds, and to evaluate the antioxidant abilities of Gac fruit parts(peel, pulp, seed and aril) grown in Malaysia. Methods: LC-MS/MS was used for identification of antioxidant compounds and UV-Vis for estimation of the contents of phenolics, flavonoids, and carotenoids. Lycopene and β-carotene were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography. DPPH(2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays were employed to evaluate antioxidant capacities. Results: Phytochemicals were found amongst all the fruit parts. Notably, significant amounts of carotenoids [(107.4 ± 4.5),(85.7 ± 4.4),(110.6 ± 2.1) mg/100 g dry weight(DW)], and relatively high levels of both phenolics [(27.3 ± 1.7),(28.9 ± 2.4),(30.8 ± 2.7) mg/100 g DW] and flavonoids [(38.1 ± 2.2),(8.8 ± 1.3),(24.5 ± 3.3) mg/100 g DW] were found in the fruit's peel, pulp and aril, respectively. Seed part also showed a relatively high level of flavonoids [(18.1 ± 2.3) mg/100 g DW]. Lycopene and β-carotene were found to be significantly high(P < 0.05) in aril [(579.3 ± 22.7) and(621.0 ± 35.0) μg/g DW], followed by peel [(51.0 ± 7.5) and(210.0 ± 12.5) μg/g DW] and pulp [(37.6 ± 10.9) and(205.6 ± 22.1) μg/g DW)]. Antioxidant assays revealed that aril possessed the highest scavenging activity(IC_(50) = 865 μg/mL), while the peel possessed the highest ferric reducing power of 140 μmol FeSO4/μg. Conclusions: The current results demonstrate that Gac fruit grown in Malaysia is a rich source of phytochemicals, especially carotenoids, and possesses antioxidant activities. | 20 | Deep Learning and SVM-Based Approach for Indian Licence Plate Character Recognition显示文摘Every developing country relies on transportation,and there has been an exponential expansion in the development of various sorts of vehicles with various configurations,which is a major component strengthening the automobile sector.India is a developing country with increasing road traffic,which has resulted in challenges such as increased road accidents and traffic oversight issues.In the lack of a parametric technique for accurate vehicle recognition,which is a major worry in terms of reliability,high traffic density also leads to mayhem at checkpoints and toll plazas.A system that combines an intelligent domain approach with more sustainability indices is a better way to handle traffic density and transparency issues.The Automatic Licence Plate Recognition(ALPR)system is one of the components of the intelligent transportation system for traffic monitoring.This study is based on a comprehensive and detailed literature evaluation in the field of ALPR.The major goal of this study is to create an automatic pattern recognition system with various combinations and higher accuracy in order to increase the reliability and accuracy of identifying digits and alphabets on a car plate.The research is founded on the idea that image processing opens up a diverse environment with allied fields when employing distinct soft techniques for recognition.The properties of characters are employed to recognise the Indian licence plate in this study.For licence plate recognition,more than 200 images were analysed with various parameters and soft computing techniques were applied.In comparison to neural networks,a hybrid technique using a Convolution Neural Network(CNN)and a Support Vector Machine(SVM)classifier has a 98.45%efficiency. | Nitin Sharma Mohd Anul Haq Pawan Kumar Dahiya B.R.Marwah Reema Lalit Nitin Mittal Ismail Keshta | 2023 | Computers, Materials & Continua2023,,1: | 1 |
