1Risk assessment of heavy metal contaminated soil in the vicinity of a lead/zinc mine显示文摘Heavy metal contamination of soils through anthropogenic activities is a widespread and serious problem confronting scientists and regulators throughout the world. In this study we investigated the distribution, chemical species and availability of lead, zinc, cadmium and copper in nine surface(0 to 20 cm) soils from near an abandoned lead/zinc mine tailings located in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, China. Total heavy metal contents ranged from 5271 to 16369 mg/kg for Pb, 387 to 1221 mg/kg for Zn, 3.0 to 9.3 mg/kg for Cd and 65 to 206 mg/kg for Cu. In general, all heavy metals exceeded China National Standards for Soil Environmental Quality of Heavy Metals by a factor of 3—65 times. Comparison of the heavy metal concentrations(Pb, Zn, Cd and Cu) with clay content revealed a strongly significant relationship while significant relationship(P<0.001) was also obtained between Cd+Zn and Pb+Cu. Solid phase speciation of the soils using Tessier procedure showed that the heavy metals were distributed in the order: residual  organically complexed-Fe-Mn oxides occluded>carbonate bound>exchangeable > water soluble. In the organic matter fraction, the ratio of Pb(29.1%) to its total concentration in the soils was higher than those of Zn(4.70%), Cd(3.16%) and Cu(9.50%). The percentages of the water soluble and the exchangeable fractions of Pb(1.80%) and Cd(2.74%) were markedly greater than those of Zn(0.10%) and Cu(0.15%), suggesting that Pb and Cd are relatively more mobile and hence more toxic in the contaminated soils. Strongly significant relationships between H2O-Pb, H2O-Zn and H2O-Cu, strong positive correlations between H2O-Pb, H2O-Zn, H2O-Cu and organic matter in soil were found. The content of H2O-Pb, H2O-Zn, H2O-Cu was negatively correlated with pH values. The similar negative relationships between pH values and exchangeable heavy metals were also recorded. 3Early warning system for shallow landslides using rainfall threshold and slope stability analysis显示文摘A combined cluster and regression analysis were performed for the first time to identify rainfall threshold that triggers landslide events in Amboori, Kerala, India. Amboori is a tropical area that is highly vulnerable to landslides. The 2, 3, and 5-day antecedent rainfall data versus daily rainfall was clustered to identify a cluster of critical events that could potentially trigger landslides. Further, the cluster of critical events was utilized for regression analysis to develop the threshold equations. The 5-day antecedent(xvariable) vs. daily rainfall(y-variable) provided the best fit to the data with a threshold equation of y = 80.7-0.1981 x. The intercept of the equation indicates that if the 5-day antecedent rainfall is zero, the minimum daily rainfall needed to trigger the landslide in the Amboori region would be 80.7 mm. The negative coefficient of the antecedent rainfall indicates that when the cumulative antecedent rainfall increases, the amount of daily rainfall required to trigger monsoon landslide decreases. The coefficient value indicates that the contribution of the 5-day antecedent rainfall is~20% to the landslide trigger threshold. The slope stability analysis carried out for the area, using Probabilistic Infinite Slope Analysis Model(PISA-m), was utilized to identify the areas vulnerable to landslide in the region. The locations in the area where past landslides have occurred demonstrate lower Factors of Safety(FS) in the slope stability analysis. 4Mercury remediation potential of a mercury resistant strain Sphingopyxis sp.SE2 isolated from contaminated soil显示文摘A mercury resistant bacterial strain SE2 was isolated from contaminated soil.The 16 s rRNA gene sequencing confirms the strain as Sphingopyxis belongs to the Sphingomonadaceae family of the α-Proteobacteria group.The isolate showed high resistance to mercury with estimated concentrations of Hg that caused 50%reduction in growth(EC_(50)) of 5.97 and 6.22 mg/L and minimum inhibitory concentrations(MICs) of 32.19 and 34.95 mg/L in minimal and rich media,respectively.The qualitative detection of volatilized mercury and the presence of mercuric reductase enzyme proved that the strain SE2 can potentially remediate mercury.ICP-QQQ-MS analysis of the remaining mercury in experimental broths indicated that a maximum of 44%mercury was volatilized within 6 hr by live SE2 culture.Furthermore a small quantity(23%) of mercury was accumulated in live cell pellets.While no volatilization was caused by dead cells,sorption of mercury was confirmed.The mercuric reductase gene merA was amplified and sequenced.Homology was observed among the amino acid sequences of mercuric reductase enzyme of different organisms from a-Proteobacteria and ascomycota groups,Khandaker Rayhan Mahbub Kannan Krishnan Ravi Naidu Mallavarapu Megharaj 2017Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,1:10
5Bioavailability of Arsenic and Antimony in Terrestrial Ecosystems:A Review显示文摘Arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) are metalloids that belong to group 15 of the periodic table and exhibit toxic properties in the environment. They mostly occur naturally at low concentrations in soil, although these can be significantly elevated in both aquatic and terrestrial food chains as a result of dispersion from anthropogenic sources, e.g ., mining activities. The bioavailability, i.e., the proportion of the contaminant in soil and dust that is available for uptake by plants and other living organisms, presents the greatest risk to terrestrial ecosystems. Various in vivo and in vitro methods have been used to measure As and Sb bioaccessibility in soil and dust. In vivo measurement of bioavailability can be time consuming, expensive, and unethical;thus, in vitro methods are commonly preferred. However, there is considerable uncertainty around the efficacy of in vitro tools used to measure the bioavailable fractions of As and Sb. The results of these methods are dependent on many variables, e.g., soil characteristics, contaminant sources, and chemical composition of in vitro methods. Therefore, substantial variations are observed between in vitro and in vivo results obtained from different test animals and endpoints. In this paper, we review the literature on As and Sb bioavailability in terrestrial ecosystems and current in vivo and in vitro techniques used for assessing bioavailability and bioaccessibility of metalloids. 6Kinetics of fluorescence properties of Eu^(3+) ion in strontium-aluminiumbismuth-borate glasses显示文摘Eu3+ doped strontium-aluminium-bismuth-borate glasses with the chemical composition(50–x)B2O3+20Bi2O3+7Al F3+ 8Sr O+15Sr F2+x Eu2O3(where x=0.1 mol.%, 0.5 mol.%, 1.0 mol.% and 1.5 mol.%) were prepared by the conventional melt quenching technique.Structural properties of the prepared glasses were analysed through X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) and Raman spectral techniques.Thermal stability of glass was analysed by differential thermal analysis(DTA) curve.Photoluminescence characteristics were studied using excitation, emission spectra and decay curves of Eu3+ doped strontium-aluminium-bismuth-borate glasses.The Judd-Ofelt(J-O) intensity parameters, Ωλ(λ=2, 4 and 6) were obtained using emission spectra and was used to identify the nature of Eu3+ ions with their surrounding ligands.Using J-O parameters the transition probabilities(A), stimulated emission cross-sections σE p, branching ratios(βR) and radiative lifetimes(τmeas and τcal) were evaluated for the 5D0→7F J(J=0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) transition of Eu3+ ions in the present glasses.The decay profiles were found to be non exponential for all the concentrations and the measured lifetimes(τmeas) were obtained from the decay profiles.The higher values of A, σE p, βR and quantum efficiency(η) for 5D0→7F2 emission transition at 617 nm confirmed the present glass was as active medium for red laser emission applications.M.Dhamodhara Naidu D.Rajesh A.Balakrishna Y.C.Ratnakaram 2014Journal of Rare Earths2014,32,12:5
7锁磷剂联合好氧反硝化菌修复富营养化水体显示文摘氮磷是造成水体富营养化的主要原因,单一治理方法常常难以同时有效去除氮磷.本文利用1株分离自富营养化水体的好氧反硝化菌株(AD-19)构建固定化菌膜,并与锁磷剂Phoslock~?联合修复富营养化水体,研究了Phoslock®的控磷效能和反硝化菌的脱氮性能及二者联合作用时对富营养化水体的修复效果.结果表明,在投加比例为80(Phoslock®与PO^(3-)_(4)-P的质量比)的条件下,Phoslock®对模拟富营养化水体中PO^(3-)_(4)-P去除率可达95%以上,并能有效抑制底泥中磷的释放.好氧反硝化菌AD-19具有较好的异养硝化-好氧反硝化功能,在以NH^(+)_(4)-N或NO^(-)_(3)-N为唯一氮源条件下生长良好并能去除97%以上的氮,经16S rDNA鉴定该菌株属于假单胞菌属(Pseudomonas sp.).利用湖泊模拟装置论证了Phoslock®联合固定化菌膜修复富营养化水体的可行性,进一步地,利用该技术对武汉市某公园内富营养化池塘进行修复治理,经过16 d的处理,氮磷等水质指标从劣Ⅴ类地表水提升至Ⅲ类,并持续稳定270 d以上,证明Phoslock®联合固定化菌膜可快速和有效地修复富营养化水体,并保持水质长期稳定.李炳堂 周志勤 Ravi Naidu 胡智泉 郭大滨 陈嘉鑫 2021环境科学2021,42,4:3
8Identification of commonly regulated protein targets and molecular pathways in PC-3 and DU145 androgen-independent human prostate cancer cells treated with the curcumin analogue 1,5-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,4-pentadiene-3-one显示文摘Objective: To identify mutually regulated proteins in PC-3 and DU145 androgen-independent prostate cancer cell lines treated with 1,5-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,4-pentadiene-3-one(MS17), and to study the molecular pathways that contributed to the anticancer activity of MS17.Methods: PC-3 and DU145 cells were treated with 3 × EC_(50)(15 μM) concentration of MS17 for 24 h and were subjected to protein expression profiling using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and protein identification by mass spectrometry.Selected differentially expressed proteins with significant P-value of P<0.05 and fold change over 1.5-folds were filtered through and ontologically classified.Mutually regulated proteins were ranked by fold change and identified as common protein targets of MS17.Results: Profiling data revealed that, the mutually down-regulated proteins included ACTB and ACTG associated with structural molecule activity, ACTN1 with cell cycle, ACTN4 with cell migration, HNRPK with apoptosis, PLST with morphogenesis and TERA with proteolysis.However, the expressions of CH60 and HS71 A respectively associated with response to unfolded protein demonstrated opposing regulation in PC-3 and DU145 cells.Pathway analysis of the differentially expressed proteins in PC-3 cells demonstrated the modulation of top pathways associated with cell-cell adhesion and cytoskeletal organization while in DU145 cells the pathways were associated with proteosomal degradation, regulation of electrolytes and water, regulation control of germ cells and organization of filament assembly/disassembly.Conclusions: The findings of the present study provide an understanding on the anti-tumorigenic activity of MS17 at the proteome level and warrant further research for its potential application for the management and treatment of androgen-independent prostate cancer.Kamini Citalingam Faridah Abas Nordin H.Lajis Iekhsan Othman Rakesh Naidu 2018Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2018,8,9:2

20Review of radiographic findings in COVID-19显示文摘The purpose of this study is to review the published literature for the range ofradiographic findings present in patients suffering from coronavirus disease 2019infection. This novel corona virus is currently the cause of a worldwide pandemic.Pulmonary symptoms and signs dominate the clinical picture and radiologists arecalled upon to evaluate chest radiographs (CXR) and computed tomography (CT)images to assess for infiltrates and to define their extent, distribution andprogression. Multiple studies attempt to characterize the disease course bylooking at the timing of imaging relative to the onset of symptoms. In general,plain CXR show bilateral disease with a tendency toward the lung periphery andhave an appearance most consistent with viral pneumonia. Chest CT images aremost notable for showing bilateral and peripheral ground glass and consolidatedopacities and are marked by an absence of concomitant pulmonary nodules,cavitation, adenopathy and pleural effusions. Published literature mentioningorgan systems aside from pulmonary manifestations are relatively less common,yet present and are addressed in this review. Similarly, publications focusing onimaging modalities aside from CXR and chest CT are sparse in this evolving crisisand are likewise addressed in this review.
