| 1 | Complications and survival in patients undergoing colonic stenting for malignant obstruction显示文摘AIM:To investigate whether predicting patients that might be at a higher risk for complications might serve to improve the selection of patients undergoing colonic stenting.METHODS:A retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent an attempted self-expandable metal stent(SEMS)insertion for malignant colonic obstruction between November 2006 and March 2013.All patients were either referred for preoperative colonic decompression with the intent of a single surgical procedure,or for palliation of the malignant colorectal obstruction for unresectable cancer.Fisher’s test orχ2test was performed on categorical variables,and the t test for continuous variables.Univariable and multivariable logistic regression were used to examine the association between independent variables and the presence of complications from SEMS insertion.RESULTS:SEMS insertion was attempted in 73 patients.Males comprised 55.71%and the mean age was 67.41±12.41 years.Of these,65.15%underwent subsequent surgery,while 34.85%received SEMS as palliation for advanced disease.Extracolonic tumors were only4.76%.The majority of patients had stageⅣdisease(63.83%),while the remainder had stageⅢ(36.17%).SEMS were successfully inserted in 93.85%(95%CI:87.85%-99.85%).Perforations occurred in 4.10%,SEMS migration in 8.21%,and stent re-occlusion from ingrowth occurred in 2.74%of patients.The mean duration of follow up for the patients was 13.52±17.48 mo(range 0-73 mo).None of the variables:age,sex,time between the onset of symptoms to SEMS insertion,time between SEMS insertion and surgery,length of the stenosis,location of the stenosis,albumin level,or receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy,could predict the development of complications from either SEMS insertion nor prolonged survival.CONCLUSION:None of the variables could predict the development of complications or survival.Further studies are required to identify patients who would benefit the most from SEMS. | Majid A Almadi Nahla Azzam Othman Alharbi Alabbas H Mohammed Nazia Sadaf Abdulrahman M Aljebreen | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,41: | 5 |

| 4 | Effects of foraging site distances on the intestinal bacterial community compositions of the sympatric wintering Hooded Crane(Grus monacha)and Domestic Duck(Anas platyrhynchos domesticus)显示文摘Background:The composition of intestinal microflora in animals is affected by cross-species transmission.In a nature reserve,the foraging sites of waterbirds are relatively fixed,but frequently close to residential areas and can also be visited by domestic fowls.It is easy to result in the trans-species-flock dispersal of gut microbes between the wild birds and domestic fowls.The effects of the variable foraging site distances on the gut microbe structures of the waterbirds and the sympatric domestic fowls are currently unclear,and further research is required to evaluate the impacts of geographic location on cross-infection.Methods:Illumina high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analysis software were utilized to compare and analyze the composition of gut microbes from the fecal samples of Hooded Cranes(HC;Grus monacha)and two groups of Domestic Ducks(Anas platyrhynchos domesticus)that foraged at 1 km(ducks in near areas,D-N),and 4 km(ducks in far areas,D-F)away from the habitats of the Hooded Cranes at Shengjin Lake,China.Results:The results showed that there were significant differences in the alpha-diversity of the gut bacteria in the HC,D-N,and D-F samples under the interspecific distance factor.The dominant bacterial phyla,Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria,showed correlations with distance for each host.The D-N group had more diverse intestinal flora than the D-F,as they were physically closer to the HC and had more indirect contact and cross-transmission of their gut microbes.More potentially pathogenic bacterial sequences,and Operational Taxonomic Units(OTUs)were found in the D-N than in HC and D-F.Conclusions:Hooded Cranes and the Domestic Duck populations at variable distances from the cranes showed significant differences in their intestinal bacteria and potentially pathogenic bacteria.The closer the foraging sites were,the easier the intestinal flora spread across species.The results provide a basis for determining the safe distance between wild birds and domestic fowls in a nature reserve. | Wei Wang Lizhi Zhou Rong Fu Lei Cheng Shaofei Yan Nazia Mahtab Yunwei Song | 2021 | Avian Research2021,12,2: | 3 |
| 5 | Responses of soil microbial communities and functions associated with organic carbon mineralization to nitrogen addition in a Tibetan grassland显示文摘Alpine grasslands with a high soil organic carbon(SOC)storage on the Tibetan Plateau are experiencing rapid climate warming and anthropogenic nitrogen(N)deposition;this is expected to substantially increase the soil N availability,which may impact carbon(C)cycling.However,little is known regarding how N enrichment influences soil microbial communities and functions relative to C cycling in this region.We conducted a 4-year field experiment on an alpine grassland to evaluate the effects of four different rates of N addition(0,25,50,and 100 kg N ha^-1 year^-1)on the abundance and community structure(phospholipid fatty acids,PLFAs)of microbes,enzyme activities,and community level physiological profiles(CLPP)in soil.We found that N addition increased the microbial biomass C(MBC)and N(MBN),along with an increased abundance of bacterial PLFAs,especially Gram-negative bacterial PLFAs,with a decreasing ratio of Gram-positive to Gram-negative bacteria.The N addition also stimulated the growth of fungi,especially arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi,reducing the ratio of fungi to bacteria.Microbial functional diversity and activity of enzymes involved in C cycling(β-1,4-glucosidase and phenol oxidase)and N cycling(β-1,4-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase and leucine aminopeptidase)increased after N addition,resulting in a loss of SOC.A meta-analysis showed that the soil C/N ratio was a key factor in the response of oxidase activity to N amendment,suggesting that the responses of soil microbial functions,which are linked to C turnover relative to N input,primarily depended upon the soil C/N ratio.Overall,our findings highlight that N addition has a positive influence on microbial communities and their associated functions,which may reduce soil C storage in alpine grasslands under global change scenarios. | Ruyi LUO Jiafa LUO Jianling FAN Deyan LIU Jin-Sheng HE Nazia PERVEEN Weixin DING | 2020 | Pedosphere2020,30,2: | 3 |

| 7 | Clinical epidemiology of ulcerative colitis in Arabs based on the Montréal classification显示文摘AIM:To determine the clinical,epidemiological and phenotypic characteristics of ulcerative colitis(UC)in Saudi Arabia by studying the largest cohort of Arab UC patients.METHODS:Data from UC patients attending gastroenterology clinics in four tertiary care centers in three cities between September 2009 and September 2013were entered into a validated web-based registry,inflammatory bowel disease information system(IBDIS).The IBDIS database covers numerous aspects of inflammatory bowel disease.Patient characteristics,disease phenotype and behavior,age at diagnosis,course of the disease,and extraintestinal manifestations were recorded.RESULTS:Among 394 UC patients,males comprised51.0%and females 49.0%.According to the Montréal classification of age,the major chunk of our patients belonged to the A2 category for age of diagnosis at17-40 years(68.4%),while 24.2%belonged to the A3category for age of diagnosis at>40 years.According to the same classification,a majority of patients had extensive UC(42.7%),35.3%had left-sided colitis and29.2%had only proctitis.Moreover,51.3%were in remission,16.6%had mild UC,23.4%had moderate UC and 8.6%had severe UC.Frequent relapse occurred in17.4%patients,infrequent relapse in 77%and 4.8%had chronic disease.A majority(85.2%)of patients was steroid responsive.With regard to extraintestinal manifestations,arthritis was present in 16.4%,osteopenia in 31.4%,osteoporosis in 17.1%and cutaneous involvement in 7.0%.CONCLUSION:The majority of UC cases were young people(17-40 years),with a male preponderance.While the disease course was found to be similar to that reported in Western countries,more similarities were found with Asian countries with regards to the extent of the disease and response to steroid therapy. | Othman R Alharbi Nahla A Azzam Ahmed S Almalki Majid A Almadi Khalid A Alswat Nazia Sadaf Abdulrahman M Aljebreen | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,46: | 2 |
| 8 | Overexpression of fibrinogen-like protein 2 protects against T cell-induced colitis显示文摘AIM To determine the effect of overexpression of fibrinogenlike protein 2(FGL2) on regulatory T cell(Treg) and effector T(Teff) cell function on T cell-induced colitis in Rag1-/-mice.METHODS Treg and Teff cells from fgl2-/-, fgl2+/+, and fgl2 Tg mice were purified by FACS. They were studied in vitro for immunosuppressive activity and cell proliferation and in vivo for their effects on the development and prevention of T cell-induced colitis in Rag1-/-mice. RESULTS In vitro, fgl2 Tg Treg had enhanced immunosuppressive activity, and fgl2 Tg Teff had reduced proliferation to alloantigen stimulation. Transfer of Teff from C57Bl/6J mice(fgl2+/+) into Rag1-/-mice produced both clinical and histologic colitis with dense infiltrates of CD3+ T cells, crypt abscesses and loss of goblet cells. Fgl2 Tg Treg prevented the development of T cell-induced colitis, whereas fgl2+/+ and fgl2-/-Treg were only partially protective. In mice that received fgl2 Tg Treg, the ratio of Foxp3+ to CD3+ cells was increased both in the colon and in mesenteric lymph nodes, and Teff cell proliferation as determined by staining with Ki67 was reduced. Teff cells from fgl2 Tg mice did not produce colitis. CONCLUSION Here we show that fgl2 Tg Teff are hypoproliferative and do not induce colitis. We further demonstrate that fgl2 Tg Treg prevent colitis in contrast to fgl2+/+ Treg, which were only partially protective. | 9 | Distribution,source identification and risk assessment of selected metals in sediments from freshwater lake显示文摘This study is based on the assessment of distribution,source apportionment and risk assessment of selected metals in freshly deposited sediments from freshwater lake,Pakistan.Composite sediments were collected and processed to assess Ca(NO_3)_2-extractable and acid-extractable levels of the metals in the sediments using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.Enrichment factors(EF),geoaccumulation indices(I_(geo)),contamination factors(C_f) and degree of contamination(C_(deg)) were computed to estimate the degree of contamination.The potential ecological risk was assessed using sediment quality guidelines and mean-ERM-quotient(m-ERM-Q).On the average basis,acid-extractable metals followed the decreasing concentration order:Ca>Mg>Fe>K>Mn>Na>Sr>Zn>Pb>Cr>Co>Cu>-Li>Cd,whereas,the Ca(NO_3)_2-extractable levels were:Na>Ph>Cd>Sr>Co>Cr>K>Mg>-Cu>Zn>Li>Ca>Fe>Mn.The highest Ca(NO_3)_2 extractable concentrations were observed for Na,Pb and Cd,while that of Ca,Fe and Mn were the least.EF showed very high and extremely high enrichment of Pb and Cd,respectively,while Ca,Co,Cr,Li,Mg,Mn,Sr and Zn manifested moderate enrichment:the I_(geo) results revealed moderate to strong and strong to extreme pollution for Pb and Cd,respectively;and the C_f study showed moderate,considerable and very high contamination by Co,Pb and Cd,respectively.The C_(deg) revealed very high degree of contamination in the sediments as a whole.Principal component analysis(PCA) and cluster analysis(CA) showed considerable anthropogenic contributions of Cd,Pb,Co,Mn,K,Zn and Li in the sediments.Measured levels of Cd and Pb exceeded ERL values,manifesting occasional adverse biological effects to the dwelling biota.Moreover,the mERM-Q study manifested 21%probability of toxicity in the sediments. | Javed Iqbal Munir H.Shah Nazia Shaheen | 2015 | International Journal of Sediment Research2015,30,3: | 2 |

| 16 | Structural,electrical,dielectric and magnetic properties of Mn-Nd substituted CoFeO_3 nano sized multiferroics显示文摘A series of Mn x Co_(1-x) Fe_(1-y) Nd_yO_3(where x=0.0–1.0 & y=0.0–0.1) multiferroic nanocrystals was synthesized via sol-gel auto-combustion technique. The structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction(XRD)while morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The electrical resistivity was observed to increase from 2.14 * 10~7 to 8.77 * 10~9 Ω-cm and activation energy was found to increase from 0.64 to 0.75 e V, while the drift mobility decreased from 4.75 * 10^(-13) to 1.27 * 10^(-15)cm^2V^(-1)S^(-1) by the substitution of Mn and Nd contents. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and dielectric loss factor decrease with frequency and Mn-Nd contents.
